Labatt's entering U.S. 'quietly and unobtrusively'This past month, Labatt's entertainmentoperation, Blue Live, presentedsinger/songwriter Vangelis in Los Angeles, which marks the company's first involvementinto concert promotion stateside. "We'removing in quietly and unobtrusively," saysJudy Pal, Labatt's public relations coor-dinator.
Actually, Blue Live's Jim Skarrett ex-plains the move is "just a follow-up to ourphilosophy of trying to get involved totally inthe music and entertainment industry, as op-posed to being just a sponsor of an event.
"We'd like to get involved in (more)U.S. presentations, venue management, likewe have with Massey Hall - merchandisingand publishing," he continues. "An all en-compassing company, with each arm of ithelping the other arm."
To that particular end, 6 months ago,Skarrett hired Larry Mason (formerPolyGram A&R Director), who is currentlyin England following his return from L.A.and the sold -out Vangelis shows. Althoughbased in Ontario, Mason "spends most of histime in either London, New York, or L.A.
"A lot of what he'll be doing will be cen-tred on the European scene," Skarrett ex-plains, "just looking at the newer things com-ing out, trying to get a handle on the direction
Hornsby & The RangeNo.1 at MuchMusicKen Bain's untiring promotion efforts onbehalf of Bruce Hornsby & The Range isbeginning to pay off with top of the chartnumbers and this week a No. 1 berth on theMuchMusic Top 30 (Dec. 12). Other signifi-cant movers are Parachute Club's Love IsFire, up to No. 7 from 10; BruceSpringsteen's War, which moves to 12 from16; Robbie Nevil's C'est la vie, up to 13 from20; and Cyndi Lauper's Change Of Heart to19 from 24.
Chart adds this week are Corey Hart inat No. 20 with Can't Help Falling In Love;Kool & The Gang's Victory at 27; and LandOf Confusion by Genesis, new at 29.
Prior to the first of his 3 sold out shows atToronto's Maple Leaf Gardens (Nov. 12-14),Lionel Richie met with members of MCAand their guests (back row I to r) CameronCarpenter (Motown Label Mgr.), Richle, Lee

of where some of the new music trends arecoming from."
Having dealt with bands such as DireStraits, Stevie Ray Vaughan and J.J. Cale,Skarrett maintains Mason's expertise is not"in being a promoter or so much abusinessman, as being a person who is involv-ed with the management and development ofartists."
Therefore, as well as assisting Canadianbands (Kim Mitchell, Haywire, ParachuteClub and The Partland Brothers) in theirendeavours to conduct a viable national tour,Blue Live will also be presenting foreign actsthat are "just starting out," building in theprocess "loyalty and a relationship" withthose acts.
Skarrett agrees, "Yes, we've had a goodtrack record with some of the developingstuff. We took Mr. Mister out when peoplewere saying 'Mr. Who?' and it turned out tobe very successful and we took the PlatinumBlonde tour, when the album was virtually a
Court gets toughon bootleggerPatrick Fox, Director of Investigative Ser-vices for the Canadian Recording IndustryAssociation (CRIA) reports that the most re-cent prosecution for copyright infringement"has yielded Canada's most severe penalty todate."
David Wolotko, who pleaded guilty to asingle count of fraud over $1,000 under theCriminal Code, was sentenced to 1 day in jailand a $15,000 fine. He appeared beforeJudge M.H. Harris in Scarborough (Ontario)Provincial Court (Dec. 1-2, 1986). JudgeHarris also made an order pursuant to Sec-tion 25 (3) of the Copyright Act (R.S.C.1970) that all material seized by the police intheir raid of Apr. 18, 1986, be delivered toFox as a representative of "those personswhose copyright interests were infringed."As a result, Fox reports that "some 360 videobootleg masters and 649 audio bootlegmasters will be destroyed."
According to Fox, Wolotko, operated"a substantial mail-order bootleg businessknown as Rockin' Ears/Rockin' Video."
Fox goes on to explain that there wasevidence the accused "may well have beenresponsible for the distribution of bootlegmaterials valued at up to $1,000,000 annuallybut, because these business operate on a cash -only basis, the Crown could not establish theexact amount of business done by Wolotko."
The bootleg recordings were of live per-formances by major artists in countriesaround the world dating from 1972 to and in-cluding a performance by Rush in Montrealfrom Mar. 7, 1986. Also included were some17 video and 17 audio bootlegs of Bruce Spr-ingsteen performances. The accused,Wolotko, apparently offered the bootlegitems at an average price of $35.00 per hourof recording time.
Fox concludes with "The heavy penaltyimposed by Judge Harris should serve as adeterrent to video and audio pirates, ascopyright owners whose works are pirated inthe future, use the Wolotko decision as aprecedent for even higher penalties.

"But the other end of working with anact, watching it develop and seeing it come toa gold album (Haywire) and a national tour,to me that is the satisfying side of it. Theother part is very much technical: you buy arider, you put it on sale, and you build a stage- then you do a show. Springsteen set 'diamond'before New Year - OatesAs far as certification is concerned for BruceSpringsteen's new release, that won't comeuntil January. But with shipments expectedto easily surpass the quarter million markbefore the new year, Don Oates, Vice Presi-dent Marketing & Sales for CBS RecordsCanada, reports the 5 -LP box set will actuallyhave reached the diamond plateau before theend of the month.
With the label's fiscal year ending Nov.28, Oates also explains that CBS finished1986, "substantially" over budget."However, even without Bruce Springsteen,we would have been over budget," he adds.
In terms of both dollar and unit figures, the Springsteen live compilation has givenCBS Records, "our best month ever," saysOates. On the year, "without Bruce, itwouldn't have been our 3rd best, but withhim, it's been our 2nd best ever."
Initially though, the tremendous de-mand for the boxed set did place theirmanufacturing division in a bind, and Oatesrelates they were in. a "heavy-duty catch up"situation subsequent to replenishing stock, with respect to other artists' product. "We'reover the hump now," stresses Oates, "andback into a full supply cycle of the other pro-duct."
Although, as in previous years, CBS in1986 didn't have the one blockbuster record,Oates attributes their success to releasing "alot of platinum acts." These include the TopGun Soundtrack, Billy Ocean, Jennifer Rush,Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, Miami SoundMachine, and The Outfield, among others.
"Even without Bruce Springsteen,"Oates concludes, "we were having an excep-tional year - better than last year."

A photo is worth a thousand wordsHow cute and coy we are, living in the securi-ty of a major market like Toronto, andforgetting the rest of the country. A notefrom a major radio programmer to a RecordsTo Radio writer, says, "Thanks to your arti-cle in RPM, I now know what you look like."He went on to propose marriage, but we'lloverlook that aspect of his "panting" revela-tion, and instead, point out the importance ofRPM in the field.
ACTRA Radio AwardsHow about one setting for a dinner andaward show and not have us sitting in seatstoo crowded and walking around the streetsto a restaurant that children really like. Ididn't like it! (EC: Too bad, see if they inviteyou next year!)
Just as few refinements!!The Broadcast Executive Society's Christmasluncheon is one of the biggest events of theyear (EC: Bigger than the Junos??) but itcould stand some minor adjustments. Thewhole format is perfect except for the rockbands they book. Wouldn't it make moresense to have a dance band outside theballroom for the merrymakers to dance to,after the first draws . . . and let the others en-joy themselves over drinks in the ballroom? It

makes more sense to make the main draw andlet the dancers dance on . . . and the drinkerstalk on. It was tough to think during the rockshow, and the demographics were wrong forthis kind of . . . concert. Other than that, itwas perfect.
It's party time ... !!Tis the season to be jolly, or you missed thegreatest party of the year. The annual Broad-cast Executive Society held their annual partyat Toronto's Sheraton Centre (Dec. 11/86).and like years past . . . it was a zoo. Forgetabout getting a drink (EC: I hope someonefrom the BES kept tab on what was actuallyserved!!) Well . . . I gotta tell you, this was agreat party. Where can you rub shoulderswith the creme de la creme of the broadcastbusiness, and come away still believing inCancon as a force in the broadcastingbusiness? All these people need is a littleguidance and they can come over to our side.Forget the wars, these people bleed just likewe do, and cracking that barrier should be abreeze. Most of the broadcasters I met at theBES luncheon (EC: Do you mean BS party . .. ??) were quite aware of Cancon and howimportant it was to their programming day(EC: Records make up almost 90 percent ofprogramming, which allows for about 30 per-cent Cancon . . . did you say 30 percent . . .??)
It could come to pass!Is a big shot (EC: Careful!!!) ready to stepdown, relinquish his tarnished crwon andhand over the reigns of a mammoth recordempire to young blood. It could be . . . andtime will tell!!!
It could be next year!!!From what we hear and we hear a lot! Thenext twelve months may be the most in-teresting in the history of Canadian broad-casting. More next year!!!
Nice to be ... King!!There he was . . . sitting on his throne with hisQueen beside him . . . on a ship in the middleof the Atlantic. RPM's Stan Klees, probablythe most popular passenger aboard the cruiseship, reigned over this mid -Atlantic tradition. It was a great 2 weeks . . . made possible byDavid Buxton, Ulianna Buxton, Doreen Far-rugia, Kelly Gaden, Preeka Woods, MaryJane Gallivan, Brenda Eggett, and JenniferGray. Back to back videos released on Corey HartThe Aquarius label has released 2 videos onCorey Hart: one on his current chart item,Can't Help Falling In Love, the other, apopular album track, Angry Young Man.Both tracks are included on his Fields Of Firealbum.
The old Presley hit was performed byHart, via satellite, from Amsterdam duringthe recent Juno Awards presentation. KeithBrown of Aquarius Records stresseshowever, that the new video "embodies a dif-ferent performance which was shot in Lon-don under the direction of Rob Quartly.
Interestingly enough, when reviewingHart's Fields Of Fire album, People'sMagazine's Mary Shaughnessy zeroed in onCan't Help Falling In Love, which was releas-ed almost 25 years ago by Presley. "Hart in-fuses that 1962 ballad," writes Shaughnessy,"with a uniquely personal interpretation thatstands up to Elvis' already worthy version. Not only can you hear Hart's voice out frontwhere it belongs, but you can actually hearwhat he's saying."
Can't Help Fallin In Love is the follow-up single to I Am By Your Side, so it's onlynatural that a video would also be released ofthis track. However, it is unusual for a se-cond video to be released at the same time, prompted by the success of Angry YoungMan in Europe as well as an album track inNorth America. The video of the latter wasshot in Rome and represents what is describ-ed as "an upbeat departure for Hart." Both
videos were directed by Quartly."I'm anxious for people to see the Angry
Young Man video," says Brown, "because Ithink it shows Corey in a more natural light. The past 4 times now we've released a balladas a single. As a result, we've had 4 emotionalvideo performances in a row." He continueswith "When I look at the Angry Young Manvideo, I see a lot more of the Corey Hart thatI know," concluding with "The only darkclouds that hang over the real Corey are thekind you see raining on the Coliseum."
Hart and Quartly have worked togetheron 8 videos, the first being the award -winningSunglasses At Night.

COVER STORY
Paul Young - a move to rock . . .
and credibility!
Since being plucked from The Q -Tips, a British R&B band, Paul Young has released a
trio of solo albums. The latest, Between Two Fires, stylistically moves away from R&B
towards a rock -tinged feel. No longer are his song's hooks played by a keyboardist, but by
a guitarist, thus the "gritty" sound - what he set out to achieve - he is most pleased with.
Unlike his previous albums, No Parlez, and Secret Of Association, "which," he ad-
mits, "were merely a series of exercises." He stresses however, that Between Two Fires was
"a conceived" project. "The concept being to try and pin myself down to one sound for
one album," he adds. "We knew what sound we wanted," he continues, "so we knew what the songs
should be like, and also what producer we wanted." The producer brought on board
was Hugh Padgham, known for his work with Genesis, The Police, and Phil Collins,
among others. One of the tasks handed to Padgham
was "to get the band to sound live," relates Young, "to sound like we were playing
together as a band. Whereas before," he con- tinues, "we would always start a song from
Dave Evans resigns Capitol position
J. David Evans has resigned as President and Chief Operating Officer of Capitol Canada.
In making the announcement of Evan's exit from Capitol, Edward C. Khoury, Chair-
man and Chief Executive Officer, Capitol Records
- EMI of Canada Limited, noted: "I very much regret to have to announce that -
David Evans has resigned as President and Chief Operating Officer of Capitol Canada."
Khoury continues with "David (Evans) who had a distinguished career of over 18
years with our Canadian company, made many significant contributions to our Cana-
dian company, made many significant con- tributions to our success in Canada, and I am
sure that his many friends, both within the company and throughout EMI Music
worldwide, will wish him every happiness and success in the future." At the same time Khoury announced the
appointment of Richard C. Lyttelton to suc- ceed Evans as President and Chief Operating
Officer of Capitol Records - EMI of Canada Limited.
Lyttelton, joined Capitol Canada in June of this year as Managing Director. He first became associated with EMI Records in the U.K. in 1966 and, after a short period in
business on his own, rejoined the company with EMI Leisure Enterprises in the U.K. He
returned to EMI Music in 1976 becoming Managing Director, Finland, Director Inter-
national for EMI Records - EMI U.K., and
Managing Director, South Africa. In making the above announcement, Khoury noted "I am sure that all of
Richard's colleagues in North America and worldwide will join with me in congratulating
him on his new appointment, and wish him great success in his new leadership position."
scratch and 'added' one thing at a time." The bandmembers were assembled
before recording began - and it was stressed that the opportunity to practice was essential.
"They've all been with me long enough to know their position in the arrangement. We
just said 'do what comes naturally to you lads', same as they do live. So, it came out
sounding more live, more direct . . .
which is what we wanted."
Young is well aware his albums sell pro- portionately much better in Canada than in
the U.S. - so well, in fact, that defining his musical style was a constant concern while
recording the album. He believes the U.S. market will be much more receptive if he is viewed as a rock musician.
"What we took into account," suggests Young, "was the fact that Americans are fin-
ding it hard to locate us. They don't know which radio stations to service, because they don't know what kind of music to call it. We found on the last one, they called Playhouse a
rock track, and Everytime a soul or R&B track. Therefore, I'm getting serviced in dif- ferent stations all the time and they can't ever
see me as one particular type of artist, which is what they have to do.
"In England," he continues, "you don't have that because there's no radio stations to
service - there's just one major radio station. On the whole, we don't have to call ourselves
anything other than musicians. This is the thing you realize when you come to America, that the whole business works in a different
way." Although, obviously each system has its
advantages, Young suggests that over the past few months, he has seen "some pretty
disgusting stuff" enter the U.K. charts and these "novelty" records have "some of the
bigger bands worried." The blame, he reasons, lies not only with the record com-

panies - who sign the acts - but also with the consumers - who buy the product. "We've got this soap opera called
Eastenders," he relates. "It's like General Hospital
. . . and it's like all these actors are
releasing records that are getting to No. 1. And we're getting models who take their
clothes off . . .
getting record deals and get- ting hits.
"But that's what they want to buy. So they (the record companies) just get a pretty face
. . . well, not even pretty
. . just a
familiar face is as important to them. They're just too safe."
Apparently, the new British rocker has much to contend with. Their credibility is at stake and the essence of what they do best,
which is write hit songs, is plagued by those who can't; yet through circumstance, are
undermining the very existence of these real musicians.
"I suppose if my album has to come under a banner," Young concludes, "it comes under rock
. . . as long as I don't get
labelled pop because that gives me a very short life. Pop is Madonna and pop is
WHAM . . .
and my album doesn't sound like either of those."
Paul James Band covers classics on new single
Toronto guitarist Paul James recently releas- ed 2 songs on the independent label Lick 'n'
Stick Records. Both sides of the single, which contains 2 rock 'n' roll classics, were produc-
ed by James. Side one carries Route 66, a number
written by Bob Troup and recorded by the Rolling Stones during the mid -60's. On the
flip, realising the current season, is Run Run Rudolph a Chuck Berry composition. The single, recorded at Comfort Sound,
is presently available through Roblan's, Records On Wheels and The Record Ped-
dler.

Cruise ship opportunitiesIt is only recently that the idea of working ona cruise ship has been made possible forCanadians. With the cruise industry becom-ing a very important part of the travelbusiness, it is inevitable that Canadian artistswould become much in demand.
It's a great life and allows for travel toall parts of the world or the same 7 -day cycle, week after week. Every night is showtime. Aswell, the entertainers become involved inother events that are part of being cruisestaff. It can be fun, stimulating and good ex-perience for a career in entertainment.
The demographics of the passengersrange from young swingers on the funships tosenior citizens on the more expensive and ex-tensive cruises and the very rich or famous onvarious luxury cruises.
Entertainment on board can range fromLas Vegas -type shows featuring
Jane O'Neil
internationally -known names like RobertGoulet, Frankie Laine, Nipsy Russell, andmore - all who have played the S.S. Norway -or a full-scale production of My Fair Lady orBarnum, performed in a ship's theatre thatseats 650. There are also openings for 4 -piececombos, trios or calypso groups playingsmaller lounges.
for Canadian performersThe super ships have as many as 16
lounges, and most of them feature live musicor entertainment.
Regent Holidays of Toronto is currentlysailing 2 ships through the Caribbean andthey make every attempt to hire as manyCanadian musicians and entertainers aspossible. They even play up their Canconpolicy in publicity brochures.
Currently performing on the T.S.S.Atlas are 2 Canadians, who have been seenextensively on television in Canada. Ron Vic-tors is a young Torontonian, who is workingon an album to be released shortly. JaneO'Neil, another Toronto native, has alsolaunched a recording career and has taken abreak to sail, and to work on her material. She is quite happy with her job on the Atlas, which she considers an exciting new ex-perience. Both she and Victors feel they areadding to their showbiz experience as theyperform before capacity houses night afternight.
The sister ship to the Atlas is the 14,000ton M.V.Oceanos. Canadian recording artistChris Barbiere, who resides in Hamilton,Ont., is Entertainment Director on theOceanos and acts as emcee, comedian andsinging host in the main lounge of the cruiseship. He feels it is an enormous opportunity

that can't be matched on the mainland. Aswell, he acts as Social Host and Sports Direc-tor to the 500 to 700 new passengers whocome aboard every Saturday to cruise theresort ports of the Caribbean each week.
Some entertainers become Cruise Direc-tors and make this their lifetime career. Ifyou love sailing and want to live on a ship, itmay be the life for you.
"We do everything we can to hire Cana-dians whenever we can," says David Buxton,Director of Cruise Operations for RegentHolidays, "but there are times when we can'tfind the right people in Canada and we !lavato look to other countries."
Unfortunately, there is no agencyspecializing in supplying talent for crt,i;:eships. However, as the industry grows, /heneed for talent will no doubt become a priori-ty.
It should be pointed out that this isn't acareer for everyone. The discipline is com-pletely different, and you don't become a bigstar on a cruise ship. You may find yourselfhelping to bring new passengers aboard orcalling numbers for bingo in the lounge in theafternoon, or supervising the games aroundthe pool. Whittaker & O'Connor hot with Skye Boat Song
The traditional Scottish ballad, The SkyeBoat Song, released as a duet by Roger Whit-taker and Des O'Connor is racing up theU.K. pop charts, and after only 5 weeks onrelease now has a No. 17 berth. The veteranBritish performers performed this 100 yearold classic a few months ago on the DesO'Connor Tonight TV series. Audience reac-tion in the studio and among the millions ofviewers, prompted a release on the Tembolabel. Whittaker has performed the song as a

whistling feature in his concert toursthroughout the world for the past 12 years.
J. Edward Preston, President, TemboMusic Canada supplies a little history on TheSkye Boat Song, which he explains "il-lustrates an episode in the escape of PrinceCharles Edward Stuart (Bonnie PrinceCharlie) in the winter of 1746, fleeing fromthe advancing troops of King George II. TheYoung Pretender, as he was titled by hisfollowers, had led the Jacobite Rebellion tovictory at Prestonpans, before marching onLondor. to take the English throne, which hebelieved was rightfully his. The rebellionhowe -r, was crushed at Culloden and withhis army in total disarray, Charles fled. Hewas helped in his plight by Flora Macdonald, who disguised him as her Irish maid -servant,and made good his escape from the Scottishmainland to the Isle of Skye. The youngPrince was later taken to safety in France."
Preston goes to on to explain that "thesong itself, was founded on an old Hebrideansea shanty first heard in 1879. Four bars weretaken from Hebridean boatmen, and 4 extrabars added by composer Annie Macleod. Thewords were written by Sir Harold Boulton in1884."
Apparently, the betting in the U.K. isthat the record will be in the Top 10 byChristmas. Tembo is rush -releasing the singlein Canada, where it will be distributed byRCA.
For those interested, Preston will supplyup-to-date British chart positions Tuesdaymornings. Call him at 416-593-5450.

Canadian singles market 'very strong' - KennedyCiting distinct variables and differences bet-ween the Canadian and U.S. singles'markets, Leonard Kennedy and Terry Trojekof Saturn Distribution affirm the Canadian7" situation is far from approaching its"swan song" as reported recently in anAmericantrade.

Jan Matejcek electedto CISAC postsJan Matejcek, President and GeneralManager of the Performing Rights Organiza-tion of Canada Limited (PROCAN), hasbeen elected to both the AdministrativeCouncil and Executive Bureau of the Interna-tional Confederation of Societies of Authorsand Composers (CISAC). PROCANrepresents almost 20,000 composers, lyricistsand music publishers in Canada, whileCISAC is made up of 94 composer/authorsocieties from around the world.
PROCAN' s Nancy Gyokeres points outthat "The CISAC thrust is felt in copyrightareas worldwide via its discussions and lobby-ing for modern copyright legislation." Shecontinues with "Through its technical com-mittees, the day-to-day operation of perform-ing rights societies is enhanced by constantcontact between member societies."
There are 24 societies holding seats onthe Administrative Council, whose represen-tatives in turn elect the 12 -person ExecutiveBureau.
Gyokeres concludes with "Mr. Mate-jcek's election ensures that the interests ofCanadian music creators are heard at the in-ternational level.
