McCarran International Airport

McCarran International Airport is the principal commercial airport serving Las Vegas and Clark County, Nevada. The airport is located five miles south of the central business district of Las Vegas. It covers an area of 2,800 acres and has four runways. McCarran is owned by Clark County and operated by the Clark County Department of Aviation (DOA). It serves as a hub for US Airways, and a focus city for AirTran Airways, Allegiant Air, and Southwest Airlines; McCarran is also the largest base for both Allegiant and Southwest. In 2006, McCarran ranked eleventh in the world and sixth in the United States for passenger traffic, with 46,194,882 passengers passing through the terminal. The airport ranked fifth in the world and United States for aircraft movements, with 605,046 takeoffs and landings.

History

American aviator George Crockett, a descendant of frontiersman Davy Crockett, established Alamo Airport in 1942 on the site currently occupied by McCarran International. In 1948, Clark Country purchased the airfield from Crockett to establish the Clark County Public Airport, and all commercial operations moved to the site of this airport. On December 20, 1948 the airport was renamed McCarran Field for U.S. Senator Pat McCarran, a longtime Nevada politician who authored the Civil Aeronautics Act and played a major role in developing aviation nationwide. An expansion plan called McCarran 2000 was adopted in 1978 and funded by a $300 million bond in 1982. The three-phase plan included a new central terminal; a nine-level parking facility; runway additions and expansions; additional gates; upgraded passenger assistance facilities; and a new tunnel and revamped roadways. Between 1986 and 1997, Terminal 2 was built where two separate terminals had been in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1998 the D Gates SE and SW wings opened adding 28 gates, and in 2005, the D Gates NE wing opened adding 10 gates.

Local Area Information

Las Vegas Profile

Las Vegas is an internationally renowned resort, shopping, entertainment, and gambling destination. As the center of gambling in the United States and the world, Las Vegas is commonly known as The Entertainment Capital of the World; famous for its massive and lavish casino resorts, and around the clock entertainment. The city’s image has often made it a popular setting for films and television programs. The constant stream of tourist dollars from the hotels and casinos draws job-seekers from around the country and is the cause of the land building boom happening today. The city is located in an arid basin surrounded by mountains varying in color from

pink to rust to gray. City elevation is around 2030 feet above sea level. The Spring Mountains lie to the west. As befits a desert, much of the landscape is rocky and dusty. Within the city, however, there are a great deal of lawns, trees, and other greenery. Typical to the Mojave Desert, Las Vegas experiences very hot summers, mild winters, abundant sunshine year-round, and very little rainfall. The surrounding environment is dominated by desert vegetation and some wildlife.

10

Attractions Abound in Las Vegas

The major attractions in Las Vegas are the casinos. The most famous casinos line Las Vegas Boulevard South, also known as the Las Vegas Strip. There are many casinos in the city’s downtown area as well, which was the original focal point of the city’s gaming industry in its early days. Nearby parks include Red Rock National Park, Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Floyd Lamb State Park, and Las Vegas Springs Preserve Recreational and educational facility. On the first Friday of each month, the “First Friday” celebration is held which exhibits the works of local artists and musicians in a section of the city’s Downtown region now called the “Arts District.”

Sporting and Special Events

Las Vegas is a world renowned hotspot for sporting events, concerts, comedy, shows, and energetic nightlife with too many events to name.
