teaCher OF the year: David nelsonI began working for Adult Ed. in 2003 with the Commercial Vehicle Driving program as a part time instructor. With years of truck driving experience behind me, I felt very comfortable training and teaching for Flagler County Schools. What I had yet to learn was that by working for Flagler County Schools, opportunities were going to open up for me that I did not expect.

Originally from New Jersey, and after High School, I began my transportation

experience working for Education Reading Service delivering books to schools in the tri-state area. After several years with a municipal truck driving job, I moved to the southwest and experienced truck driving in and around the oil field. Regional, coast to coast, and local driving with various commodities and companies over the years has helped to make me efficient in my field. Having the opportunity to share this experience has truly changed my life. I began full-time with Adult Education in 2005 and became a Third Party Tester for the State of Florida which enabled me, in 2007, to be certified as an Examiner Trainer for the State of Florida and Flagler County Adult Education. I have been rewarded in so many ways and I am fortunate to work with students eager to learn and destined to change their lives. I would like to give thanks to my professional staff of instructors, and a special thanks to all my co-workers and administration for all of their support. It is a privilege to work with you all. Thanks to my wife Ginny for her constant support which helped me to be my best. I am truly honored and thankful to be nominated for Teacher of the Year for Flagler Technical Institute, Adult and Community Education.

emplOyee OF the year: Barbara KornBarbara Korn, VPK teacher at the Early Learning Center of Excellence, is a certified teacher (K-6) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education who started working with Adult Education in 2007. Her first assignment was one-on-one with a child who had hydro encephalitis and needed aid in controlling her behaviors. Barbara worked closely with several special needs counselors to give this child the greatest opportunity to

succeed in the classroom. When this child was transferred to another facility Barbara was assigned as a VPK teacher. Her knowledge of preparing children for Kindergarten is exceptional yet she continues to attend as many trainings as possible to increase her skills. She has been instrumental in providing instruction and assistance to children with special needs in the VPK classroom, often recognizing children who may need to be considered for ESE. Just recently, because the Department of Education has changed the VPK standards, she took it upon herself to revamp our lesson plan template to include the changes. She has also proven to be a leader among her peers at the Early Learning Center.

distance learning optionsSometimes our lives seem just too busy to fit one more thing in. But, if you need to obtain your GED diploma, improve basic academic skills, or increase your English language skills, these improvements to your life are just too important to set aside. Now, the availability of Adult Education has become even more convenient. Imagine having access to learning 24 hours a day/7 days a week/52 weeks a year! Great for stay-at-home moms, employees with long and/or non-traditional hours, and others who may prefer learning in an on-line environment. If you have ac-cess to an Internet-connected computer and an e-mail address, you could be on your way to online learning! While students will complete coursework on-line, they must first register in-person at Flagler Technical Institute, and take an assessment to evalu-ate their current academic or language skill level.

Citizenship PreparationBecome a U.S. Citizen! For many local residents it is their dream to become a United States citizen. The Citizenship class is designed to assist students with the process of applying for citizenship, as well as the academic instruction to help students learn what is needed to pass the citizenship test. Some say the most difficult section of the test concerns vocabu-lary – note the multi-syllable words: Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, inalien-able rights! Classes include these vocabulary words and more. Class instruction utilizes books, audio CD’s and classroom discussion. In Citizenship class students learn about such topics as American cul-ture, history, and voting rights. If your dream is to become a United States citizen, take the first step by joining this class!

We focus on the bike/run, mainly because the transition between bike and run is the toughest of the two during a triathlon. By doing a series of short repeats several times in the same workout we are teaching your legs and body to switch as fast as pos-sible and as efficiently as possible between two very different kinds of effort. Don’t get stuck in the same old training routine, join us and see how we can help you in your next race!

Balance, stretch, and strengthening - for seniorsJoin our gentle exercise class for aging bones & mus-cles. Yes, you can! As we age, we all lose our sense of balance. But it can be regained through specific ex-ercises; what a great way to greatly reduce the pos-sibility of tripping or falling! It is also proven that se-niors can actually regain bone density through exer-cise. Being more limber greatly reduces risk of joint and muscle injury; besides, it’s fun to be fit! Ines Casademont, who is very experienced in leading ex-ercise groups for the senior population, will present simple and gentle exercises incorporating certain elements of yoga, isometrics, using weights prop-erly, and balance techniques. Even if you feel too weak to take this class, the exercises are gentle and can be adapted to your fitness level. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring bottled water.

This group will eventually be-come a competitive team and play in local tourna-ments. Coach Smith makes learning Tennis fun and exciting. Quickstart TennisQuickStart Tennis is the new USTA format for chil-dren ages 5 – 10! QuickStart Tennis appropriately scales down all aspects of regulation tennis—in-cluding equipment, court dimensions, and scor-ing—so that the game becomes specifically tailored to the age and size of the child. The format is broken into two age groups: 7 & under and 10 & under, simi-lar to models used successfully in other youth sports such as baseball. Children “play to learn” rather than “learn to play”.

synchro swimBallet in the water! Synchronized swimming is not only beautiful but is a great way for your child to make friends, tone their entire bodies, and learn fun dance moves in the water. The Synchro Belles Team won the 2011 National Gold Medal and are 6-time Florida State Champions. The only prerequisite for beginners is to possess the ability to float on their backs and swim one length of the pool - above or under water. It is helpful if the child has dance, gym-nastics, tumbling or swimming experience, but these are not mandatory. Swimmers learn to set up and achieve athletic goals while also maintaining high academic standards.
