CAREER HIGHLIGHS-First season as coach at UWSP

-22-18 record as a head coach

-2008 WFCA Assistant Coach of the Year

HEAD COACH TOM JOURNELLNow in his 25th year of coaching and fourth as defensive coordinator with UW-Stevens Point, Tom Journell takes over football coaching duties after longtime coach John Miech stepped down in December of 2011.

Journell spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Pointers, helping lead the team to a 19-9 record in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Under his tenure the Pointers defense finished amongst the leaders in the league in almost every statistical category.

In 2008, UWSP finished the season 9-2 overall and earned the program’s first playoff appearance since 2001. That year, Journell was honored by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association as the organization’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

Prior to UWSP, Journell spent four seasons as the head coach at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. He compiled a 22-18 overall record in his four seasons with the Bluejays and ranks fifth all-time in Elmhurst history for career wins. In his final three seasons at Elmhurst, the Bluejays posted back-to-back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 25 years.

Previously, Journell spent 15 seasons at UW-River Falls, serving primarily as the defensive coordinator. He started with the Falcons in 1989 as the team’s secondary coach and after one season was promoted to defensive coordinator. In 1995, he was again promoted to assistant head coach, a position he held for the next eight seasons.

Journell helped lead the Falcons to NCAA Division III playoff appearances in both 1995 and 1996 and aided UW-River Falls to its last WIAC title in 1998.

Prior to coaching at UW-River Falls, Journell spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Miami University (Ohio) where he was an assistant defensive secondary and linebackers coach. He studied the game from legendary coaches Dave Anderson, now executive director of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, and Terry Hoeppner, former Indiana University head coach.

Journell attended NCAA Division III Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, graduating in 1987. He was a four-year participant on the football and baseball teams.

A native of Eaton, Ohio, Journell and his wife Betsy have two sons, Mack (14) and Tate (8).

Vlcko began his coaching career as the running backs coach at Lindenwood College from 1994-96. He then spent eight seasons at Bemidji State from 1996-2003, serving first as the quarterbacks coach before taking over as the team’s offensive coordinator in 1998.

Vlcko then moved on to Bemidji State University from 1996-2003, serving as the offensive coordinator. Vlcko returned to his alma mater, Coe College, in 2003 where he was the team’s quarterbacks and running backs coach as well as helped with special teams.

Following Coe, he spent four seasons at NCAA Division II Truman State University from 2005-08, a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association, as the team’s offensive coordinator for four seasons before being named interim head coach in 2009.

Vlcko graduated from Coe in 1994 with a bachelor of arts in economics and business administration. In 1996, he earned a master’s of business administration degree from Lindenwood, and in 1999 he earned a master of science in physical education degree from Bemidji State.

UW-Stevens Point football has put 83 former players and coaches into the Athletics Hall of Fame. Established in 1969, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame was founded with the purpose of giving lasting recognition for outstanding contributions to the athletic program of the university, to help promote more interest in the university’s athletic programs among alumni and to display before students in attendance at the university the performance of past athletes who have contributed so much to making the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point a great school.

The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) recognized the all-time football team in conjunction with the conference’s 2012-13 Centennial Celebration. All-Time Teams were selected in those men’s and women’s sports that were classified as “championship” sports at some point during the conference’s 100-year history.

WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner remarked that it was an extremely difficult process given the 100-year span and incomparable success the conference has experienced in most of its sports. Karner noted that in some sports, even achieving All-American status didn’t necessarily guarantee an athlete a spot on the team. He also acknowledged that while disagreement is inherent and expected whenever there is a selection of an all-time anything (be it a team, restaurant or movie), the conference nonetheless felt it important to recognize student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the success of the most accomplished Division III conference in NCAA history.

The student-athlete representation on each team has relied heavily on input provided by the sports information director from each of the nine WIAC campuses, while the process for selecting the head coach(es) for each team also includes input from a panel of media representatives. The number of individuals selected per team varies depending upon the nature of the sport itself as well as the number of years the sport has/had been sponsored within the conference.

The conference has also elected to establish a special “legacy” category to recognize those student-athletes and coaches who had extremely accomplished careers but competed during an era(s) when the compilation of statistical data was spotty at best and/or the style of play at that time does not translate for comparative purposes to the stats prevalent in the modern era. The WIAC “Legacy Team” will also be named at a later date.

All-Time Team members were regonized at the WIAC Centennial Banquet, held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison August 4, 2012.

One of the most regonizable names in UW-Stevens Point football history, Clint Kriewaldt was inducted as an inaugural member of the newly-established Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 2012.

Kriewaldt dominated at linebacker and running back for UW-Stevens Point from 1995-98 and earned All-WIAC First Team accolades all four seasons – the only player in program history to accomplish the feat. A perennial All-American, Kriewaldt was named the WIAC Player of the Year following the 1998 season after registering 115 tackles, including 20 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, one interception and eight rushing touchdowns. Kriewaldt also recorded a career-best four rushing touchdowns against UW-Oshkosh in 1998. His career totals consisted of a school-record 416 tackles (second-highest total in conference history), including 54 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, three interceptions, 11 fumble recoveries and 16 rushing touchdowns. Kriewaldt was selected in the sixth round (177th overall) of the 1999 National Football League Draft by the Detroit Lions. In nine NFL seasons with the Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers, he accumulated 141 tackles and two interceptions, and he was a member of the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL championship team.
