The mIaaCentral Oklahoma is in its first year as a mem-

ber of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II institutions in Kansas, Missouri, Ne-braska and Oklahoma, was first organized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Associa-tion.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of being one of the top NCAA Divi-sion II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently con-ducts championships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in volleyball, cross country, soc-cer, basketball, indoor and out-door track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II conference changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The decision to make the change originated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institutions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Mis-

souri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commis-sioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph Mc-Fillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in 2007.

Jim Johnson succeeded Mc-Fillen in July of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the major expan-sion of the conference in 1989. Pittsburg State, Washburn, Mis-souri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the

1989-90 season.Southeast Missouri left the MIAA following the

1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, NebraskaOmaha entered the league in 2008 and Lincoln re-joined the conference in 2010.

On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State will do the same next year, which will leave 14 schools in the MIAA.

SCHOOl niCknaMe “Bronchos” was the nickname selected

for Central Oklahoma in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. SCHOOl COlOrS

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors in 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh.

The first public display of the bronze and

Central Oklahoma plays its home games at Tom Thompson Field, located just east of Hamilton Field House on campus.

The field is named for UCO graduate Tom Thompson, who donated funds to help start the soccer program in 1998, and now ranks as one of the finest soccer facilities in NCAA Division II after undergoing a massive renovation two years ago.

UCO has enjoyed great success on its home field, entering the 2012 season with a glitter-ing 104-23-5 (80.7 winning percentage) record in the facility. The Bronchos played their first home game on Sept. 13, 1998, beating St. Gregory’s 3-0.

UCO has also played 15 home games away from Tom Thompson Field, having gone 12-2 at Wantland Stadium and 0-1 at the Edmond Soccer Club Field. The Bronchos drew what was then an NCAA Division II-record 2,139 fans to Wantland Stadium in 2008 in a game against Dallas Baptist and went 8-2 while playing all 10 home games there in 2010.

Mike COOk Mike Cook has been with the Central Oklahoma soccer program

since its inception and has built the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II power.

Cook came to UCO when the school started the program in 1998 and has guided the Bronchos to a 214-72-16 record over the past 14 years. He has a 19-year women’s record of 302-94-17, rank-ing among the Division II leaders in all-time wins and winning percentage (.752).

Mike has led UCO to eight national playoff berths, with the Bron-chos winning six regular-season titles and five tournament crowns

during their tenure in the Lone Star Conference. Cook earned LSC Coach of the Year accolades six times and has been named Regional Coach of the Year twice.

He’s coached 42 All-Region players and five All-Americans during his tenure and UCO had 41 players earn first- or second-team All-LSC honors a combined 77 times.

UCO was 11-9 in its first year of varsity competition in 1998, then went 13-5-1 in 1999 while breaking into the Division II top 20 rankings during the season.

The Bronchos had a breakthrough season in 2000, finishing 20-3 in winning both the regular season and league tournament titles. UCO made its first national playoff appearance, beating Mesa State before falling to eventual champion UC San Diego in the quarterfinals.

UCO followed that with a 15-6 campaign in 2001, then won the LSC Tournament in 2002 before falling to Metropolitan State in the national tournament to finish 20-3.

The Bronchos made a repeat national tournament appearance in 2003 in going 15-5-2, then went 13-6-2 and won the LSC title in 2004.

Cook led the Bronchos to a 16-3-2 record and a second consecutive league crown in 2005, with UCO losing a shootout in the playoffs.

The Bronchos captured a third straight league championship in 2006 before falling in a shootout in the national tournament to finish 18-3-1.

UCO claimed a fourth consecutive LSC regular-season title and made its longest Division II playoff run in 2007, winning two games and advancing to the Sweet 16 during a 19-5-1 campaign.

The Bronchos had their four-year string of LSC titles ended in 2008 and ended up finishing 13-6-3, but bounced back the next year to go 14-6-3 in winning the LSC Tournament title and making it back to the national tournament.

UCO went 11-8-1 in 2010 and started 0-3 last year before winning a school-record 15 games in a row to qualify for the national playoffs despite playing an independent schedule. The Bronchos earned a first-round bye before losing to Dallas Baptist 1-0 in the second round.

Mike came to UCO after a highly-successful tenure at Southern Nazarene. He was an as-sistant coach for the SNU men’s team from 1987-92 before serving as head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams from 1993-97, going 88-22-1 with the women and 58-44-2 with the men. He directed the women’s team to a pair of third-place NAIA national finishes and was a three-time District 9 and NAIA Southwest Regional Coach of the Year selection.

Cook also enjoyed great success as a player. He was a two-time All-District 9 and All-Southwest Region performer at SNU and played nine years of professional soccer, getting inducted into the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame in 2006.

Mike, a native of Toronto, Canada, received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SNU. Cook is married (Sandy) and has two children (Cody and Taylor).

In his sixth year as Central Oklahoma’s top assistant coach is Amel Muhamedagic, a former college head coach in Iowa.

Muhamedagic has helped the Bronchos to a 72-29-7 record over the past five years while working with defenders and goalkeepers, having helped coach 21 All-LSC, 14 All-Region and two All-America play-ers. He’s also involved in recruiting, on-field training, scouting and game preparation.

Amel coached goalkeeper Carly Fisher in his first year with the pro-gram in 2007 when UCO registered a school-record 13 shutouts and reaching its highest-ever national ranking (No. 4). In 2009, Muhamedagic guided goalkeeper Megan Riley when UCO tied the school record with 13 shutouts.

Also a member of the UCO staff in academic advisement, Amel was a standout player at Waterloo (Iowa) High School. He went on to play three years for the Northern Iowa club team, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNI.

Muhamedagic started his coaching career on the high school and club level for several years before spending three years as head coach at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with the team setting a school record for wins in 2005.

He came to UCO the following year and started helping the soccer program in 2007.Amel, native of Bosnia, is married (Cynthia) and has two daughters (Mia and Leila).

reliable scoring threat and anyone on the roster can get a chance to be that player.”

MidFielderUCO has plenty of returning experience

here in senior veterans Summer Grantham, Stephanie Fleig and Shayna Kindsvater. That

trio owns a combined 105 starts with the Bronchos and are established leaders in the middle who can excel both of-fensively and defensively.

A large group of rookies will vie for minutes, with Cierra Allen, Meghann Combs, Paislee Ham-ilton, Jesse Lankford, Paige Ma-

tacchiera, Maryan McElligott and Ciara Mitchell all capable of playing.

Cook Says: “There is enough versatility and soccer smarts in this group that some may be moved around to various other positions, so we feel real good about the midfield.”

FUllbaCkThe Bronchos have three returning

starters back in senior Alyssa Anderson, junior Jordan Hutchison and sophomore

Miranda Thorne, while junior Brittany King was a two-year starter in the Division I ranks

whose presence will be felt.Sophomore transfer Elle Aston is capa-

ble of seeing extensive action and seniors Angie Rundle and Malynda Lesneski will push for playing time. Sophomore

Tess Barnard and freshmen Courtney Cox and Kylee Warne will also help.

Cook Says: “We’ll be really solid in the back and should have another good defensive unit. Alyssa, Jordan and Miranda all had outstanding seasons last year and Brittany will make an im-mediate impact.”

gOalkeePerSophomore Brandi Bartley returns as the

starter after taking over early last season and sparking UCO’s school-record 15-game winning streak, but it will be a battle to keep her spot. Senior transfer Meagan Burke and freshman standout Ariana Morrison will push for the job and senior Vanessa Martinez is also in the mix.

Cook Says: “Our goalkeeping situation hasn’t been this strong in many years. We feel really good about all our keepers and they should really push each other this year.”

A season of new beginnings brings a host of unknowns, but the one constant that doesn’t change for Central Oklahoma is the goal of win-ning another conference championship.

And in 2012 that means claiming the crown in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-sociation, where the Bronchos make their debut this fall after playing as an NCAA Division II independent last year.

UCO, which captured six Lone Star Confer-ence titles in an 11-year span before leaving that league in 2010, has the tools needed to reign supreme in the MIAA.

Twelve players -- includ-ing eight starters -- return from last year’s 15-4 team that advanced to the national tour-nament, with the influx of several impact newcomers expected to keep the Bronchos among the Division II elite.

“We look to be an exciting, attack-ing, 90-minute team again this year and will be trying to be the top soccer program in the MIAA right away,” said 15th-year head coach Mike Cook. “With the schedule and roster we’ve assembled, I feel we have a great chance to compete for the conference championship and advance to the national tournament.”

UCO, No. 16 in the pre-season Division II rankings and picked second in the MIAA coaches’ poll, has experienced players back at every position and will be paced by senior lead-ers Alysssa Anderson, Summer Grantham, Stephanie Fleig, Shayna Kindsvater, Malynda Lesneski, Angie Rundle and Brittni Walker.

A position-by-position look at the Bronchos: FOrward

Senior Brittni Walker leads the way up front, having knocked in 27 career goals while topping the team in scoring each of the last three years.

Sophomores Kate Foran and Sarah Purcell also return and each has a chance to become a prime scoring threat, with talented freshmen Caitlin Bond and Kimberly Linder expected to push for immediate playing time.

Cook Says: “This is going to be a very impor-tant position for us as we’re really looking for the emergence of a solid goal scorer. We’ll look for someone to step forward right away to become a

2012 UCO SOCCer

A rough start followed by a school-record winning streak netted Central Oklahoma a national tournament berth in 2011 as the Bron-chos enjoyed yet another successful season despite competing as an NCAA Division II independent.

The Bronchos, who left the Lone Star Conference after the 2010 season and join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association in 2012, were outscored 7-1 in dropping their first three games of the year for the first time in school history.

But UCO rebounded impressively, ripping off 15 straight wins to earn a playoff berth and first-round bye before having its season ended with a disappointing second-round loss.

“We got off to a rough start while playing three really good teams, but the players didn’t get their heads down and they kept working,” head coach Mike Cook said. “We got things turned around, especially defensively, and played at a high level the rest of the year.

“It didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but I was really proud of the way the team stuck together and we had a great season.”

Two road losses and a home-opening set-back to Abilene Christian led to the 0-3 start before the Bronchos got two goals from Lizzie Merritt in breaking into the win column with a 4-0 rout of Southwest Baptist that handed Cook his 200th career win at UCO.

A 3-1 home win over Southern Nazarene followed two days later and the Bronchos evened their record at 3-3 on Sept. 16 with a 3-1 road win over Texas A&M International.

Central followed that with perhaps its biggest win of the season, knocking off No. 2-ranked St. Edward’s 2-0 on the road, getting second-half goals from Ashton Morris and

Summer Grantham while goalkeeper Brandi Bartley made five saves.

Central returned home to continue its streak with a 4-0 romp over St. Mary’s behind goals from four different players and the Bronchos recorded their third straight shutout two days later with a tough 1-0 road win over East Central on a Brittni Walker score in the 78th minute.

Walker had two goals in a 4-1 home victory over Dallas Baptist that stretched the winning streak to seven and Mi-randa Thorne scored the lone goal in a 1-0 blanking of Southwest Oklahoma on Oct. 9 to get UCO to 8-3 on the season.

The Bronchos outshot Harding 32-4 in a 4-0 runaway, then followed that with back-to-back 1-0 wins to complete a three-game road swing.

Nawal Kirts tallied the lone goal in the first of those tight wins to lift UCO past Northeastern

State and Grantham scored seven minutes into overtime to give the Bronchos a dramatic win over Midwestern State.

Central returned home Oct. 21 and blasted ECU 5-0 behind a pair of Morris goals and Grantham had two scores in a 3-1 road win over SWOSU two days later for the 13th straight win that tied the school record.

The Bronchos broke that mark on Oct. 26 with a 2-0 shutout of Newman and the streak reached 15 in a row in the regular season finale, with Katy Kashwer and Walker scoring in the first 20 minutes of a 2-0 triumph over NSU.

The 15-game winning streak earned UCO the No. 2 seed and the right to host one of two South Central Regionals, with the Bronchos drawing an opening bye.

But the season ended on Nov. 13 with a tough 1-0 loss to a Dallas Baptist team UCO defeated earlier in the year.
