With a choice of five different model grades, the Silverado range spans a wide spectrum. Power comes from a family of traditional OHV engines, including a V6 and a trio of V8s. The 5.3-liter V8 in the XFE and LTZ features a displacement-on-demand cylinder- deactivation system. Silverado’s two smallest engines have four-speed automatic transmission, while the biggest V8s have a modern six-speed automatic. Here’s a look at some of the major features of the Silverado range:

A 6.2-liter V8 is offered in Silverado, but not many Chevy buyers make that choice since the option adds substantial extra cost to a truck with an MSRP that’s already more expensive than Tundra’s. Against Chevy’s popular 5.3-liter V8, Tundra’s top engine, a 5.7-liter Dual VVT-i V8, is a real powerhouse. Not only does it have a big 66-horsepower advantage over the Chevy, but it also has an additional 66 lb.-ft. of torque. This means Tundra offers great acceleration and formidable pulling power.

more-aggressive axle ratios

For quick acceleration and the brute force needed to pull a heavy trailer, an aggressive axle ratio (one with a higher number) provides greater torque multiplication at the drive wheels. Tundra’s more aggressive standard and available axle ratios make the most of the engine’s greater power. The Silverado here doesn’t offer an axle ratio that comes close.

Greater maneuverability

Tundra has more ground clearance than Silverado to help it clear tough off-road obstacles. Plus, Tundra’s tighter turning circle can be a big advantage in the dirt or in crowded parking lots. Silverado is less maneuverable.

Advanced brake technologies

Tundra has larger-diameter ventilated front disc brakes and racing-style four-piston front calipers—features Silverado doesn’t offer. On its rear wheels, Silverado has old-style drum brakes, while Tundra has modern disc brakes. The Toyota also has Brake Assist (BA)3 and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). BA is designed to detect sudden, or “panic,” braking and adds the full pressure needed to help prevent a collision. EBD distributes brake fluid pressure to the wheels based on the driving conditions and the vehicle load. Silverado doesn’t offer either of these brake features.

1 The Toyota Tundra received the lowest number of problems per 100 vehicles among large pickups in the proprietary J.D. Power and Associates 2006-2010 Vehicle Dependability StudiesSM. 2010 study based on 52,422 consumer responses measuring problems consumers experienced in the past 12 months with three-year-old vehicles (2007 model-year cars and trucks). Proprietary study results are based on experiences and perceptions of consumers surveyed October–December 2009. Your experiences may vary. Visit jdpower.com. 2 2011 IntelliChoice, www.IntelliChoice.com, Full-Size Pickup. 3 Brake Assist is designed to help the driver take full advantage of the benefits of ABS. It is not a substitute for safe driving practices. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake-system maintenance and tire and road conditions. 4 All the airbag (AB) systems are Supplemental Restraint Systems. All ABs (if installed) are designed to inflate only under certain conditions and in certain types of severe collisions: frontal and knee ABs typically inflate in frontal collisions; side and side curtain ABs in side collisions; Roll-Sensing Curtain ABs at a severe tilt degree, roll or lateral G-force. In all other accidents, the ABs will not inflate. To decrease the risk of injury from an inflating AB, always wear seatbelts, sit upright in the middle of the seat as far back as possible and do not lean against the door. Do not put objects in front of an AB or around the seatback. Do not use a rearward-facing child seat in any front passenger seat. The force of an inflating AB may cause serious injury or death. See your Owner’s Manual for further information/warnings. 5 2011/2012 EPA mpg estimates. Actual mileage will vary.
