Dear Friends & Supporters of St Paul’s High School

In St Paul’s Letter to the Galatians, 2:19-21, we are given a glimpse into the dynamic interaction between Christ and the School’s Patron: I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. St Paul’s High School identifies Men and Women for and with Others who demonstrate a clear relationship with Christ that speaks to personal integrity and convictions - principles out of which love is generated and expressed in the world. This evening’s Honourees, Mr and Mrs Paul and Carol Hill, are such people.

In today’s fast-paced and often ‘instant’ world, the race to the top, be it financial gain or societal status, often times takes priority over some of our most basic human functions such as love or service to others. This evening we honour a couple, who together, have demonstrated that the need for commitment, dedication and service to one’s community is greater than ever before. Having reached the pinnacle of professional and personal success, Paul and Carol Hill demonstrate that personal integrity and belief in one’s convictions fulfill a certain richness that can only be attained by a profound spiritual life.

Born in neighbouring Regina, the Hills have championed causes and enriched the lives of people in their hometown, province, country and the world. Having both attended Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States, the Hills’ relationship and support of Catholic and Jesuit education runs deep. The Hills established a Catholic Studies program at Campion College at the University of Regina as well as founded the “One Life Makes a Difference” charitable foundation that assists with the education of disadvantaged youths. Hoping to make a difference for youth at an earlier stage in their lives, Mr and Mrs Hill founded the Mother Theresa Middle School of Regina, Canada’s first Jesuit-sponsored academy in the NativityMigue model, with the goal to provide economically disadvantaged Grade 6, 7 and 8 students with intensive educational and mentorship support to help them graduate to high school and enroll in post-secondary education. Mr and Mrs Hill’s generosity and influence extend far beyond the borders of Saskatchewan to the doorsteps of the Vatican and, indeed, around the world. Having founded Canada’s Chapter of The Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, a group dedicated to the preservation of the Vatican Museum’s art collection, Mr Hill was honoured as a Knight of St Sylvester by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI. Mr and Mrs Hill are Stewards of St Peter, joining others from across the nation who dedicate significant resources to proclaim their love of God, fidelity to the Successor of Peter and service to others through involvement in the Papal Foundation.

Together, along with their five children and ten grandchildren, the Hills have built a legacy of generosity and service based on integrity and values that are shared at St Paul’s High School, along with Catholic and Jesuit institutions globally. It is this legacy that we celebrate and honour tonight with prayerful hope of inspiring future generations of leaders in our community.

By virtue of supporting tonight’s dinner, you too are helping champion the mission and vision of St Paul’s High School as well as grow the Bursary Program, so that no student is denied a Jesuit education due to financial constraints. On behalf of the Faculty, Staff, Board of Directors and most importantly, the Students of St Paul’s, I thank you for your participation, sponsorship and support of the 19th Annual Ignatian Challenge Award Tribute Dinner.

An Evening in Supportof the Bursary Program

St Paul’s High School is an independent, Catholic, university preparatory school that aims at academic excellence and the growth of the whole person in its task of preparing young en for university and subsequent leadership in the community. Founded in 1926, it has been operated since 1931 by the Society of Jesus, a religious order of priests and brothers, also known as the Jesuits. St Paul’s is part of a worldwide network of Jesuit schools recognized for excellence in education and spiritual formation. The roots of this system reach back to the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola and the first Jesuit school founded in Messina, Italy in 1548.

The proceeds of tonight’s Tribute Dinner support the St Paul’s High School Bursary Program. The Bursary Program is an essential aspect of a Jesuit education at St Paul’s High School ensuring accessibility for all qualified applicants.

St Paul’s strives to ensure that all qualified applicants who are accepted can attend regardless of their ability to pay tuition. Bursaries are available to any student, based on financial need, as determined by our Bursary Committee.

Through your participation in tonight’s dinner, you are contributing to the Bursary Program and ensuring opportunities for future generations of students to come.

Mr and Mrs Paul and Carol Hill

Mr Paul Hill is the Chairman, President and CEO of The Hill Companies and Harvard Developments Inc. He is the third generation of the Hill family to lead The Hill Companies, which have played an important role in Canadian business for over 100 years. Under his leadership and strategic direction, The Hill Companies have grown and diversified across the areas of real estate, insurance, broadcasting, oil and gas, manufacturing and technology. Mrs Carol Hill is the Director of Communications for Harvard Developments Inc.

Mr Hill attended Campion College High School and Mrs Hill, née Erb, Sacred Heart College in Regina. They married in 1963 and both attended Georgetown University, the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the United States. The Hills’ five children, Rosanne, Shannon, Matthew, January and Kathryn, have all attended Jesuit schools. Mr and Mrs Hill’s lifelong commitment to Jesuit education can be seen in the profound ways in which they have given back to their community in Regina, fostered national partnerships, and internationally, in their work with the Vatican.

Mr and Mrs Hill have established the Catholic Studies program at Campion College at the University of Regina and founded “One Life Makes a Difference,” a charitable foundation that assists with the education of disadvantaged youths. In 2007, the University of Regina Business School was renamed the Paul J Hill School of Business. In 2011, Mr and Mrs Hill opened the Mother Theresa Middle School of Regina, founding Canada’s first Jesuit fostered NativityMiguel Academy. The NativityMiguel Network of schools provide economically disadvantaged Grade 6, 7 and 8 students with intensive educational and mentorship support to help them graduate to high school and enroll in post-secondary education. Mr Hill has been awarded with an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Regina and entrusted as a Knight of St Sylvester by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI in acknowledgement of his charitable work, which includes founding, with Mrs Hill, the Canadian Chapter of The Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, a group dedicated to the preservation of the Vatican Museum’s art collection. Mrs Hill became the first Chairperson and currently serves as the Chapter’s Honourary Chairperson. Mr and Mrs Hill are Stewards of St Peter, Stewards from across the nation dedicate significant resources to proclaim their love of God, fidelity to the Successor of Peter and service to others through involvement in the Papal Foundation. Mr Hill has also been the recipient of the Canada 125 Medal and the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, among many accolades.

Mr and Mrs Hill lived in Winnipeg on Montrose Street in River Heights from 1972 until 1976 and during that time welcomed their third and fourth children. Mr Hill managed the Winnipeg office of Burns Brothers and Denton, now Nesbitt Burns. Mr Hill was on the board of the Manitoba Theatre Centre, worked on the United Way campaign, and he continues to be an Associate of the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba. He belonged to the Manitoba Young Presidents Organization and is currently a member of the Manitoba World Presidents Organization.

While in Winnipeg, Mrs Hill was on the advisory board of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and was editor of the Junior League Magazine, “PEG LEG”. She has also served on the board of Globe Theatre (Regina), the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame (Wilcox, SK) and Ridley College (St Catharine’s, ON). She is currently active on a number of national and provincial boards including: The Max Bell Foundation, Canadian Council of Business for the Arts and the Pugwash International Peace Conferences. Mr and Mrs Hill, their five children and ten grandchildren, continue to enjoy, since 1973, their summer camp on Kipling Island at the Lake of the Woods.
