Since 2000, $581,000 has been awarded to more than 726 students due to generous benefac- tors as well as annual contributions from those choosing to make a dif- ference for students, the school and our community as a whole. It was a great honor to have several benefactors and/or family members attending the event to share their stories and reasoning as to why their scholarships were es- tablished. Benefactors Lorraine Conley, Ruth Ann Whittenburg and Nate Schmidt, Kathy Ellis Penkert, and Mark & Becky Schmid were all present to award the selected re- cipients their scholarships as well as personally connecting with the students and parents. This year the Thayer Family generously increased their schol- arship to $10,000, the family of Thomas A. Conley increased the memorial scholarship in his name to $500, and the estate of Michael E. Tangney, a 1955 SHS graduate and standout track athlete, estab- lished a $500 dollar scholarship in his memory. Prior to the presentation of scholarships, Dick Montgomery, President of the Foundation, pro- vided the welcome followed by a reflection from Jason Salton, a 2005 SHS graduate, and a remem- brance from Jayden Naber, the 2011 Thayer Scholarship recipient and SHS graduate. With the costs of college sky- rocketing, more SHS students will be able to pursue post-secondary education because of these schol- arships funded by your generous gifts to the Foundation. We hope you can “see” the joy that your gifts brought to the recipi- ents in the photos on the following two pages. (Continued on page 2) Your gifts provided so much this year . . . Junior U.S. history and literature students were able to spend a day at Lakeside Lab inter- acting with Bruce Hopkins, writer and historian, and all freshman stu- dents attended the Shakespeare on the Lake interdisciplinary unit. Tiger Pa’s raise over $6,000 to impact students The annual Foundation Fun Night held February 7 this year featured the Tiger Pa’s, fathers of juniors and seniors at SHS, danc-ing at the halftime of the girls’ and boys’ basketball games with Spirit Lake. Together with corporate spon-sors Farmers Trust and Savings, Community State Bank and In-surance, State Bank of Spencer, Johnston Autostores, Consumers

Lumber of Spencer & Spirit Lake, Midstates Builders, and Nolin Mill-ing, Inc., over $6000 was raised to fund Spencer Community School Foundation projects.

SHS students attend space competition at NASA Nine Spencer High School stu-dents and two teachers attended the 2012 Space Settlement Design Competition at Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, March 15-19, 2012. The Foundation funded the transportation, meals, and lodging for this project.

SHS American Experience class interacts with author These high school students gathered at Lakeside Lab on West Lake Okoboji for a day of learning

and writing with author and his-torian Bruce Hopkins on October 21, 2011. Mr. Hopkins presented

historical perspectives of literature and the influence the 1800s had on writing and our society.

Grow Where You Go workshop for SHS students Using a grant from the Foun-dation, the entire sophomore class traveled to the Lakes Corridor to attend workshops at the Pearson

Lakes Art Center, the Dickinson County Conservation Nature Cen-ter, Lakeside Lab, and the Muse-ums of Arnold’s Park, with the fo-

cus on developing a sense of self. Some of the student art work from this experience is hanging in the Board Room of Central Office.

Reasons and ways donors chose to give . . .Our donors gave this year because they:

• Have the spirit of sharing and assisting our present and future students at Spencer Com-munity Schools that will enhance communi-ty growth

• Want to impact multiple areas of students and education at Spencer Community Schools

• Keep Spencer Community School educa-tional foundation strong for those who fol-low you

• Endowed a scholarship, equipment, or an unrestricted fund in your name or in honor or memory of a person who touched your life

This is how our donors chose to give:

• Made a cash gift

• Turned in stock certificates or securities

• Made a planned gift through a will or other instrument that will provide long-term as-sistance, while not affecting your current spendable income, such as retirement plan shares to create a legacy that will live forever and touch the lives of many.

• Made a gift to the Foundation general en-dowment fund, or created a named fund through the Foundation at a designated level.
