Mike Coffman – U.S. Congressman Mike Coffman has been a small business man, State Treasurer,

but also was a U.S. Marine officer who was sent to Iraq to

help the people establish a democratic form of government

and hold elections. He came back disillusioned about the

concept of nation building and set about, as a US Congress-

man to make a difference. He serves on the Armed Services

Committee, the Natural Resources Committee and the Small

Business Committee in the House of Representatives.

In the Small Business Committee, he told us that his objective

is to revise the current state of regulatory affairs so that banks

will start loaning to small businesses again. All small busi-

nesses are having trouble gaining access to credit. His view is

that the smaller banks are paying for the sins of big banks.

His background in running a small business gives him insight into the challenges of small

business operations.

On the Natural Resources Committee, he is faced with the problem of developing our coun-

try’s natural resources. He told us that he wants to open up public lands for development of

energy resources and he believes that America can become less dependent on foreign fossil

fuels. He also addressed the challenges to the Committee in keeping down gas prices and stat-

ed that it is a complex problem that has existed for decades in our country.

On the Armed Services Committee, Congressman Coffman has his focus on reducing the size

of the military all around the world in peaceful countries in Europe and in Asia. He stated that

countries such as Germany and South Korea do not have to spend as much as the United

States of their GNP for defense because the United States military is there and provides secu-

rity at the cost of the U.S. He also noted that we have far too many civilian employees at the

Department of Defense and that our military is top heavy, with “more Admirals than we have

ships”, for example. He also pointed out that Generals without much to do “are bumping into

each other” at the Pentagon. (Continued on page 3)

Mike Coffman also addressed the low approval rating of Congress in the eyes of the citizens

of the United States, and chose to believe, for Thursday, that it is 11% rather than the most

recent figure of 9%. He told us that he believes that the Congress has to reform and he is

sponsoring bills to end Congressional pensions and automatic pay raises, admitting that he is

“swimming upstream” in that effort. Many Congressmen, when asked if they will sign on to

his bill tell him, “I’ll have to talk that over with my wife.”

STUDENT OF THE MONTH -PONDEROSA

Renea Bonnell is the Ponderosa Student of the

Month for February. Renea also goes by the names

of Clara, Alice, and Cinderella, as she has been a

top-performing ballet dancer for the past 14 years.

Her dance is her life’s passion, with dedicated prac-

tice 5-6 times per week in addition to helping Leg-

end High School as an intern in the Theater Depart-

ment.

Renea is also an excellent performer in academics,

with a 4.0+ GPA throughout high school and num-

ber 8 in her class. Active in National Honor Socie-

ty and Future Business Leaders of America.

Renea has worked on projects with the Denver

Rescue Mission and the Denver Street School.

As a teacher who spoke on her behalf, Mr. Murphy praised Renea’s love of learning and con-

sistent positive attitude which makes his job so reqarding and pleasurable. Renea’s future

plans include the option of attending the Univeristy of Arizona to study dance and business,

with a possible double major in “Fine Arts Administration.”

Cathy Groves is looking for people to sign up to

man the ticket booth at Parker Days. In addi-

tion to staying involved with the community, this

event will be a fundraiser for our club. Parker

Days will run from June 8 through the 10th.

PERU/WATER/PARTY

San Leon is a small village of about 450 inhabitants, located on the coastal plain about half-

way between Lima and Trujillo. Remote and quite primitive, it has no electricity, no paved

road. A classic third world situation, the women and children have been carrying polluted

water some distance for more than five generations. Rotary Club of Aurora learned about the

situation through other District 5450 Clubs and the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chap-

ter at CU. The work on this project, done mostly by the EWB team, involved drilling a well

and cistern up the mountain above the village. The cistern was then tied to the village, down

the mountain, through about a mile of pipeline. The village has good water at its doorstep for

the very first time. Dysentery among the children has all but disappeared in just a few

months.

We will have a presentation by the Peru Team of EWB in a few weeks about this and a more

recent project at Llacamate (summer 2011). RC Aurora was the Primary International Part-

ner in that project and we (Rotary Club of Parker) were a collaborating partner. This project

won a special award in EWB circles. There will be a celebration of the award on Wednes-

day night, April 4th up in Boulder. Time is 7:30 pm at a Mexican Restaurant yet to be

named! Our Club has received a special invitation, and as guests, there will be no cost!

Further, along with the Peru Team will be members of the Nepal Team, whom we plan to

partially support on their project this summer (2012). Included in the presentations, along

with their projects, will be discussion about “Engineers Without Borders” and its growth as a

world-wide force for good as it increases linkage with Rotary.

Formerly know as the MS-150, The 2012 Newmont Bike MS, presented by Great-West

Life will take place from June 30 to July 1. The ride will leave Front Range Community Col-

lege in Westminster, ride to CSU in Fort Collins, stay in Fort Collins Saturday evening, re-

turning to Front Range Community College on Sunday. The registration fee goes is $75.

Participants must also raise a minimum of $400 in donations outside of the registration fee.

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nerv-

ous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms

may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision.

The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one

person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to

people affected by the disease.

INTERNATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES OF A ROTARIAN

As an international organization, Rotary offers each mem-

ber unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although

each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obliga-

tions of citizenship of his or her own country, membership

in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different

view of international affairs. In the early 1950s a Rotary philosophy was adopted to describe

how a Rotarian may think on a global basis. Here is what it said:

"A world-minded Rotarian:

* looks beyond national patriotism and considers himself as sharing responsibility for the ad-

vancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace; * resists any tendency to act in

terms of national or racial superiority; * seeks and develops common grounds for agreement

with peoples of other lands; * defends the rule of law and order to preserve the liberty of the

individual so that he may enjoy freedom of thought, speech and assembly, and freedom from

persecution, aggression, want and fear; * supports action directed toward improving standards

of living for all peoples, realizing that poverty anywhere endangers prosperity everywhere; *

upholds the principles of justice for mankind; * strives always to promote peace between na-

tions and prepares to make personal sacrifices for that ideal; * urges and practices a spirit of

understanding of every other man's beliefs as a step toward international goodwill, recogniz-

ing that there are certain basic moral and spiritual standards which will ensure a richer, fuller

life."

That is quite an assignment for any Rotarian to practice in thoughts and actions!

Have you ever questioned if your involvement in Rotary is really making a differ-ence? Rest assured, you are, and I’m the lucky guy who gets to witness and experience your involvement. I’m passionate about bringing clean water to remote villages in the Afri-can bush of Ghana. There are two priceless moments that happen when we provide clean water to a village. The first occurs when that big drill rig finally hits water. Imagine the people’s anticipation as they see the trucks and equipment roll into the village and as they watch the drill rig crew work. Everyone cheers when the water flows.

The second priceless moment comes when the hand pump is installed. People through-out the village come to the well with their buckets and cups in hand. Everyone is silent as one of the elders starts pumping the handle. Cheers erupt when the water comes forth. Seeing the smiling faces of the men, women and children make all of the challenges worth it.

MorningStar was founded in 2003 by Ken Jaeger, its current CEO and President. For the past 23 years Mr. Jaeger has operated senior living communities in the greater Denver area and on the west coast. MorningStar has successfully managed, developed, acquired, and/or sold over 3,000 units of senior housing across the Midwest, Rocky Mountain and West Coast regions.
