Transcript of 2012 Santo Niño Souvenir Program
January 11, 2012
To the Sto. Niño Sinulog Community in Tampa, Florida:
Peace in our Beloved Señor Sto. Niño!
It is wonderful feeling to know that Filipinos abroad are also observing and holding the
feast of the Child Jesus, particularly in Tampa, Florida. We, from the Archdiocese of Cebu, the
Cradle of Christianity in the Far East, are also celebrating said feast on January 15, 2012. You
are indeed epitomizing the expression, “a home away from home”.
As we celebrate the feast in honor of Señor Sto. Niño, may we learn to humble ourselves
and seek forgiveness from God for our weaknesses and limitations. It takes a simple and
convincing faith that we are resting safely in God’s hands. Our beloved Señor Sto. Niño is our
Divine Protector and Ruler of our lives.
May your expression of deep and mature faith be your consolation and hope for better
and brighter lives ahead. I thank you also for your utmost generosity in helping our Archdiocesan
Seminary.
Pit Señor!
With my paternal blessing, I remain
Sincerely in Christ,
January 5, 2012
Dear Friends and Devotees of Senyor Sto. Niño,
Prayerful Greetings! Viva Pit Senyor!
We, at the Seminario Mayor de San Carlos and the Cebu Archdiocesan Major Seminary Foundation, Inc.
(CAMSFI) are doubly grateful, that as you celebrate your annual feast day of the Holy Child Jesus as Sto.
Niño Shrine USA, Inc. of Tampa, Florida, you have made us always a part of your continuing prayers and
generous donations towards the upgrading of our seminary formation program and facilities.
Individually and collectively you enflesh even if you are away from our beloved homeland, Cebu,
Philippines the vigor of becoming our new and modern day missionaries who give firm witness of your
faith in Our Lord Jesus Christ amidst a very pluralistic world.
As we congratulate you and in solidarity with you pray to the Sr. Sto. Niño as “bato-balani sa gugma -
magnet of love”, we continue to exhort you to forge onward in this edifying and holy endeavor of giving
praise and glory to God by the heroic witness of your faithful lives’ of loving care and presence to
people, the unborn and care of God’s creation.
Very truly, God’s blessings be upon you to shower your families and community as we reflect and
revitalize what the prophet Hosea (6:6) said: “It is mercy I desire not sacrifices, knowledge of God not
burnt offerings!”
Malipayong Piyesta! Bulahang Bag-ong Tuig! Uban ni Mama Maria, Inahan sa Dios, Pit Senyor.

Dear Friends and Guests:
It’s always a great joy to welcome all of you to our Annual Santo Niño Mass, procession, luncheon and prayer
dance festival. This year we are celebrating the first year anniversary of our Santo Niño Shrine and that makes
the celebration even more special. Whenever we gather to celebrate our devotion to the Santo Niño we remember
the great meaning of the Incarnation. Truly God is with us. He has become one of us to show us his great love.
The Word was made flesh to dwell among us and we have seen God’s great glory.
I know that all of you have a deep affection for this unique and special devotion and I feel so honored to be part of
your celebrations. I think of the beauty of the Christmas season, the nativity scene and the baby Jesus in the
manger, the Infant of Prague and even our beloved St. Francis of Assisi who used to create live presentations of
the birth of Jesus and his first moments on the earth. God is so great and yet God comes to us as a little child.
God asks each of us to return to him with child-like confidence and love. In this return to the Lord we also
discover each other and our identity as brothers and sisters in one human family. What joy to know that we are so
loved by so many.
Each of you is very special because you have come to rejoice at the great Feast of the Santo Niño. You remain in
my prayers always. I invite all of you to visit the shrine and to come often and present your deepest needs to the
Lord who is always there to smile upon you and answer your prayers.
I wish to thank Father Glenn Diaz our Chaplain and all the great leaders of the Filipino community. And I
dedicate this year’s Mass to Dr. Fatima Dompor our beloved friend and one of the original dreamers of this great
shrine. Now she is being held in the arms of the Risen Lord. Truly her joy and ours is complete.
Enjoy the great festival and come back and visit us soon.
Together with you in ministry,
Father Len Piotrowski

15 January 2012 Feast of Santo Niño de Cebu Dear devotees of Santo Niño: The devotion to Señor Santo Niño is very popular among many Filipinos. I think this is because in the Santo Niño we see our God in the form of a child, and we Filipinos, we simply love little children. We come from a country where many children are a familiar sight almost everywhere. The Philippines has even been described as "the child factory in the Far East." We have so many children yet, by and large, we love our little children. Perhaps it is our love for children that makes the devotion to Santo Niño so endearing to us back in the Philippines, and now even here in this part of the United States. Just a few days ago, we have celebrated Christmas. According to Blessed Pope John Paul II, the joy which accompanies the birth of the Messiah is to be seen as the foundation and fulfillment of joy for every child born into this world. But, nowadays, the birth of a child is not always welcomed as a good news. For some parents, the birth of a child means more work, new financial burdens and further inconveniences, which can lead to the temptation not to want another birth. Here in the United States, some people think that a child only comes to take up room, when it seems that there is less and less room for anybody. Nevertheless, we need to remind ourselves that a child represents the joys and hopes not only of his parents, but also the joys and hopes of the Church and of the whole society. Today many children in different parts of the world are suffering. They are hungry and poor; they are the victims of war; they are abandoned sometimes even by their own parents and condemned to remain without a home. These children are so helpless. They need the protection of every family that considers every child born on this earth as truly a gift coming from God. Jesus once said: “Let the children come to me; do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Amen, I say to you, whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will not enter it” (Mark 10:14-15). Remember how Jesus took the little children into his arms and how he blessed them, demonstrating that God’s love has ample room for everyone, including little children, especially little children. As we celebrate this year the 24th annual fiesta in honor of Señor Santo Niño, it is my prayer that our devotion to the Divine Child may help us to value every child born into this world as truly a gift coming from God. May our celebration of this feast lead us to become more aware of God’s gifts to us in our children, and in all the children throughout the world. May all of us, by word and example, be an instrument to instill our love and devotion to Señor Santo Niño in our children, and in our children's children. Pit Señor! Rev. J. Dear Fellow Devotees of the Santo Niño and Friends,
I am privileged to greet and welcome all of you Santo Niño devotees, pilgrims, and guests to our 24th annual Santo Niño Fiesta and Sinulog Festival at St. Paul Catholic Church in Tampa, Florida. Our presence and participation in the past years and today show only too well how we honor the Santo Niño – our humble response to his tremendous love for us. Indeed, we count ourselves catalysts for the "new evangelization" as we keep our Catholic Faith always alive.
At this time of merriment and joyful celebration we, in the Santo Niño Shrine USA association on the other hand, feel a sense of loss and sadness on the passing away of Dr. Fatima "Babette" Regencia-Dompor on December 29, 2011 and laid to eternal rest on January 7, 2012. She had assumed many leadership roles among us, including one of our organization's past presidents. She was a generous and loving mother, a dedicated physician, who had always committed herself to God's work. Babette will be greatly and deeply missed.
The new year 2012 ushers in an opportunity for us to recall how the Santo Niño poured out his many blessings in our community. Our devotion to Santo Niño had already spawned similar devotions in other places, drawing various ethnic groups to honor the Child Jesus and to celebrate our Santo Niño religious tradition. Then, thanks to your prayers and financial help, we were able to build a monumental and beautiful Santo Niño Shrine and Prayer Space that now is visited by numerous people from everywhere. Last year we finalized turning over of the Shrine to diocese of St. Petersburg and became one of its diocesan Shrines. Just in December 23, 2011, we sponsored the first "Simbang Gabi" (Dawn or Evening Mass) and we generated huge interest in future spiritual preparation for Christmas. Before the Mass, we had a historic launching of a memorable book "Journeys" by Dr. Tito Alquizola. The book highlights how the Santo Niño Shrine organization in Tampa Bay grew through the years and interweaves our personal stories with a historical view of the Child Jesus Devotion. It also depicts the background story of the Santo Niño statue and the planning and building of the Shrine. Truly our Lord, Jesus, the Santo Niño, never ceases to amaze us with his grace. All this because we place him preeminent in our lives and work. May we always bask in his loving embrace.
As this year’s Santo Niño Fiesta activities end, we look forward with renewed Faith to an even better and exciting celebration in 2013 – “The Santo Niño Fiesta and Sinulog Festival Silver Jubilee.” Please join me and my wife, Susan, in praying that what the good Lord has begun in various events in our lives and community, he will bring to perfect completion. God bless us all.

Journeys tells the story of how a small prayer group became a large, Catholic
devotional organization for the Santo Niño (Child Jesus), a countrywide devotion in
the Philippines. The author, Dr. Tito Alquizola, shares the personal stories of
emigrants who, in their search for home, not only founded an organization, but also
created a devotional family. Their dedication led to the opening of the Santo Niño
Shrine at St. Paul Church in Tampa, Florida, and created peace and hope for many.
An inspiring tale of faith and commitment, Journeys seeks to speak to your heart.

CEBU CITY'S RESPLENDENT CHRIST CHILD Barbara Stevens
A centuries-old statue is revered by people with a centuries-old faith.
It is monsoon season in the Philippines, and you are picking your way through puddles toward the oldest church in the
oldest city of that Southeast Asian archipelago. Despite the torrent, you can make out the ornate facade of San Augustin,
originally a monastery completed by the Augustinian friars in 1749. The church is a classic example of Spanish baroque
architecture exported to the colonies during the 17th and 18th centuries. Simple stone has been deeply cut into curves and
curlicues.
Through ornately carved wooden doors are still more fabulous wood carvings, soaring arches and massive chandeliers. At
the spectacular high altar is the ancient image of Santo Niño de Cebu, beloved patron and protector of the only Christian
nation in the Orient.
Here in Cebu City, the original Spanish capital of the Philippine Islands, is found the world's oldest known statue of Jesus
as the Child King.
The Holy Child of Cebu was probably carved in Flanders, an area of present-day northern France and western Belgium,
where woodcarvers met Spanish's demand for statues of the Christ Child depicted as King. That popular concept was born
in 16th-century Spain, from which it was then propagated by missionaries and zealous explorers.
The famous Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, discovered the Philippines in 1521. Unable to secure expeditionary
support from his own king, he approached the Spanish court, which found his proposal attractive. He set sail from Seville,
intending to acquire the Spice Islands for Spain. In the course of a difficult voyage, Magellan's fleet limped into the harbor
of Cebu, one of the central islands of the Philippine archipelago.
Just days after landing, in the spirit of the deeply religious Spanish adventurers, Magellan conducted a baptismal ceremony
during which nearly 800 natives were converted. Several religious objects were aboard the Spanish ships, in anticipation of
just such opportunities -- among them a small statue of the Holy Child as King. The tribal queen of Cebu was quite taken
with the image, and on condition that she renounce her pagan idols and be baptized, she was given the statue to keep.
Magellan and his key officers were soon murdered by warring chieftains, and Cebu remained undisturbed by Westerners for
four years. A second expedition was subsidized, and the islands were triumphantly claimed for Spain and named for Philip,
the royal prince at the time.
A basilica for the Child It was not until 1565, however, that a more substantial task force landed at Cebu, successfully conquering the natives who
had long since revoked their initial hospitality to European explorers. In the course of probable looting of the more
auspicious homes of the burned-out city, a Spanish crew member unearthed a pine box containing the same Infant King
image presented to the native queen 44 years earlier. It was resting in its original gilded cradle, quite well-preserved. The
painted face was somewhat affected by the tropical climate, however, and the only item remaining of its original Spanish
cloth garments was a small velvet hat. Otherwise, it had been outfitted in native style.
After a succession of temporary, fragile chapels consisting of bamboo and thatching, the Augustinian friars enshrined the
Santo Niño in its present church -- now a basilica. Within the shadowy interior of the church at San Augustin, the delicate
little statue fairly glows, arrayed in gem-studded garments. Only a foot high, the statue stands erect on a lavishly carved
bronze base, and is protected by a glass bell decorated with gold and precious gems.
HISTORY
Like the Infant of Prague, which became famous a century later in Europe, the Cebu figure holds a cross-topped globe in
one hand, signifying the Christ Child's universal power. In the other hand is a scepter and a staff -- the latter reminding us
of the pilgrim's staff which would be prominent in the image of El Santo Niño de Atocha in Mexico a few hundred years
later.
Perhaps setting the pattern for the later Infant of Prague, the Filipino statue is dressed in liturgical garments: Innumerable
inner albs are topped with a vestment and cape of opulent materials, sparked with gold thread and jewels that catch the light
in the dim environment.
Santo Niño de Cebu does not wear a wig; its carved wooden curls support a golden crown set with diamonds. The crown is
not the result of a papal coronation such as the Infant of Prague enjoyed, but was a gift from a First Lady of the Philippines.
Additional diamonds dangle from delicate gold chains attached to the sphere, and emeralds set in pure gold hang about the
statue's shoulders. On special feast days, the Santo Niño de Cebu wears an ambassadorial band festooned with incredibly
valuable ancient Spanish gold coins. Even the figure's little legs are resplendent, studded with large pearls.
Privileged members of the local Confraternity del Santo Niño Jesus de Cebu change the image's vestments to meet
traditional celebration dates. Because blessings are expected by those whose hand-fashioned garments are worn by the
statue, it routinely bears some 15 to 20 undergarments of laces and silks, giving a delightful crinolined effect to the outer
chasuble and cape.
Countless miracles Although all the provinces of the Philippines boast copies or unique variations of the original image, it is the Cebu statue
that most highly venerated. Miracles attributed to Santo Niño are countless. In addition to assuring good corn and
sugarcane crops, the Christ Child is famous for curing epidemics, assisting in painless childbirth, repelling invaders and
quelling fires and earthquakes. In every village, fiestas, processions and drum-accompanied native dances are among the
colorful tributes paid to the little King.
Obviously, there are elements of ancient Filipino paganism that have been intermingled with Christianity through the
centuries. Many of the traditional Santo Niño rituals were born of folk religion, and adapted to later Catholicism.
Nevertheless, veneration of the Cebu Infant is performed with deep piety based on centuries-old faith; exotic rituals are
solidly paralleled by continuous novenas, solemn Masses and very Western liturgical ceremonies.
From Spain, the 17th-century birthplace of devotion to Christ the Child King, traveled three little statues which won the
Catholic hearts of three highly diverse societies. The Infant of Prague conquered the widest world, due to Carmelite
missionaries and surges of immigration. Devotion to El Santo Niño de Atocha spread like warm sunlight from Mexico to
both North and South America. Santo Niño de Cebu, the oldest of the three exquisite Spanish images, was, and is, a major
spiritual force and timeless patron of 7,000 islands at the crossroads of Asia.
Visitors, often old women, jump and shout before the statue of Santo Niño; they are performing the sinulog, a traditional
native dance exclusively designed to honor the Holy Child.
There are candle vendors stationed at the door of the church, who, for a few coins, will present your petitions before the
statue, complete with dancing -- should you be shy about cavorting in spiritual surroundings.
Yet, the movements negotiated by the elderly señoras do not seem too challenging. Perhaps next time, you will dance for
the Santo Niño yourself. It will surely make Him smile.
