Golf team has some experience

MILLIKEN – Five return-ing players and seven others arevying for four starting spots onRoosevelt High School’s girls’golf team this spring.

While most of the rostercontains first-year players,Coach Dana Adkisson antici-pates the Lady Riders can con-tend week to week in the Class4A Tri-Valley League andNorthern Region.

Roosevelt is scheduled tostart its season next Thursday(March 22) at a TVL meet host-ed by Skyline at Twin Peaks

Golf Course in Longmont.Later this spring, the LadyRiders will host their ownleague tournament, on April 17at The Mad Russian – wherethey’ve been practicing sinceFeb. 27.

“We’ve had good weather, which is helpful,” Adkissonsaid, adding that when theweather is bad, “We do practiceindoors. We putt in the (RHS)band room and I set up nets, orwe just condition.”

But the weather has been sonice since the end of Februarythe girls have been outside eachday.

“The weather makes it nice

to go out there, and the girlsenjoy it so much more,” saidAdkisson, who once again isassisted by Noland Eastin. “It’shard to get excited when you’rein a parka. Daylight SavingsTime helps, too. We don’t get in18 (holes) after school, but wecan definitely get nine.

“It’s nice we don’t have allbeginners. About half arereturning, and I can just sendthem out to play. Then we talkafterward. It gives us time forthe new ones. There are somany rules in golf, you can’tjust turn them loose to play.”

Returning players includesenior Kendall Hyland, juniorsTiffany DoDero, Elle Faust andKat Rocha, and sophomoreNatalia Enriquez. Rounding outthe roster are senior JessicaGeisenhoff and freshmenAndrea Carr, SamanthaEdwards, Sierra Lempinen,Mariah Prado-Sellers andDiana Stevens.

Though there are fivereturning players, Adkissonsaid the four varsity slots aren’twon by default.

“They have to earn theirspot,” she said. “We’ll stillhave playoffs, but it definitelyhelps that you’ve playedbefore.”

JOHNSTOWN – Lastspring, Roosevelt High Schoolrewarded itself a return to thestate baseball playoffs after aone-year absence.

But an early departure, a 3-0loss to Pueblo East in a Class 4Adistrict elimination game, leftthe Rough Riders wanting more.

With today (March 15) beingOpening Day of the 2012 sea-son, they can finally get to workon rectifying the situation.

“That (playoff loss) stillstings,” RHS Coach AlanGibson said, recalling his teamhad been the No. 8 seed andearned a home berth only to beupset by the 25th-seeded Eagles.

“It just showed anyone canwin,” Roosevelt senior DanielQuintana said. “But it makes formore motivation.”

Jalen Davenport, another ofthe Riders’ seven seniors, agreedand said, “Our goal this year is toget to state and get past districts. We thought we’d cruise past dis-tricts last year, and we didn’t.”

Roosevelt didn’t set the goalof winning the Tri-ValleyLeague regular-season champi-onship either, but the Riders didjust that when the opportunitypresented itself. With a 7-2 homewin over Sterling in their regu-lar-season finalé, they grabbed ashare of the TVL title withNorthridge and secured the posi-tion as one of the state’s eightdistrict hosts.

Seven seniors graduatedfrom last year’s 12-8 team, which means there are someholes to fill. But at the sametime, there’s considerable talentreturning.

Quintana and Davenport –both of whom played a lot ofgames last summer for theirrespective American Legionteams – bolster a strong pitchingstaff that includes Mason

Reinick, Daniel Kammerzell andKane Kratz.

“Ryan Flynn and JaxonDavenport are waiting in thewings and could step right in atany time as well,” Gibson said.“We have guys who can keep usin the game and spot start. That’show we do it. There are too fewgames to try and plan on any-thing as far as the rotation goes.

“Our goal, if at all possible, isfor those kids to pitch in a vari-ety of situations, so when youget to the postseason no situationis foreign to them.”

Catching those pitchers areDylan Wadsworth, back from abroken leg that kept him out lastseason, and Mack Morford.

Starters at each corner, whenthey’re not pitching, will sharethe position: Morford andKammerzell at first base;Davenport and Quintana at third.

Up the middle, RayHernandez is at shortstop, withChris Courrejou at second base.Roosevelt’s utility infielder isA.J. Clayton.

In the outfield are NateTrobee in right and DerickWhite in center, while Kratz,C.J. Holle, Anthony Peebles, andAlex Freehling are vying fortime in left.

With all the fanfare ofOpening Day – the J-M PostClub color guard, TaylorHankins singing the nationalanthem, along with free admis-sion, free hot dogs and free soda– Roosevelt starts its 19-gametoday against 4A state contenderValor Christian. Then onSaturday, the Riders travel toperennial 3A state contenderEaton.

Davenport is slated to start

today, while Quintana gets theReds on Saturday. Both saidplaying tough teams right awaywill test their team and onlymake it better in the long run.

“We’ll find out a lot,”Quintana said. “I like that weplay them instead of an easynon-conference schedule. It willtell us a lot about our team.”

“Just knowing Valor has asgood a shot as we do will ampour level of play,” Davenportsaid, before remarking on therivalry with Eaton.

“This year,” he said, “wehave the best shot at beating

Soccer team eyes playoff prize

JOHNSTOWN – A coupleof wins short of making thestate playoffs in their first sea-son at the varsity soccer level,

Roosevelt High School’s LadyRiders might just be longer ontalent than opponents mightthink this year.

“We had 40 girls come out,”Coach Robert Brinker said, adding that there’s the opportu-nity for more talent to emergefrom a large number ofprospects.

“We have potential,” hesaid. “This year, we have 12freshmen with experience at therecreational or club level, which is very encouraging forus.

“This is more of a veteransquad, and they understand thegame a lot better. I’m pleasedwith our maturity in our thirdyear.”

RHS played a junior varsityschedule in its inaugural seasonin 2010. Last year, the LadyRiders finished fifth in theseven-team Tri-Valley League, which sent its top four teamsinto the Class 4A state playoffs.

After going 5-9-1 overalllast year and 3-8-1 in leagueplay, RHS hopes to be includedin this year’s 32-team statebracket.

Making the playoffs, saidsenior Gabby Ramirez, is “ourgoal this year. I really thinkwe’ll make it.”

Meghan Pomeroy, anotherof Roosevelt’s five seniors, remarked, “We’ve got themindset and passion, and itshows at practice. We’ve got acouple of freshmen who start, and there’s a lot more peoplewith potential.”

Pomeroy mentioned fresh-man sweeper Jessica Meek, asdid Coach Brinker, who credit-

ed sophomore wing HaileyHunt as “a nice addition. Shecomes over from GrandJunction.”

Joining the team midwaythrough last season, Pomeroystarts her first full season atRHS after moving toJohnstown from Japan, whereshe and her family evacuatedafter the tsunami that devastat-ed that country a year ago.Playing just the second half ofthe season, the striker scoredfour goals.

Ramirez, Roosevelt’s onlyall-league selection, led theteam with six goals and fiveassists. Junior wing Bre McNeilhad five goals and two assists, while senior midfielder BrendaGonzalez added three goals andtwo assists. Juniors DaniCreech and Courtney Kelloggand sophomore Kim Dillehayare also capable scorers.

Junior fullbacks SydneyJacox and Savannah Hook –when she returns from a kneeinjury – provide defensivestrength, as does sophomore

Boulder performanceimpresses track coach

JOHNSTOWN – Both theboys’ and girls’ teams atRoosevelt High School earnedrunner-up honors at last year’sTri-Valley League Track &Field Championships.

That took several high-plac-ing finishes by individuals fortheir teams to do that well, andin recent years a top-four finishat the league meet meant quali-fying for the Class 4A statemeet.

But having had that methodchange two years ago, an athletemust rank 18th or higher in theirevent by the end of the regularseason to qualify for state.

That means every meetRoosevelt competes in is a statequalifier, although there is acaveat. Getting onto the listearly in the season is nice, butit’s no guarantee you’ll be therewhen it really counts.

“We have had kids qualify inthe season’s first meet and thennot match that performance, forwhatever reason,” RHS CoachAbe Sauer said. “It’s a balancingact. You put down a time or dis-tance that puts you in the top 18.You just don’t know if that’sgoing to hold up and keep you in

the top 18. That bounces aroundall season. We have seen thevery last meet of the season, relay teams sitting 12th thatwere bumped out.”

Roosevelt started its seasonlast Saturday at the BoulderInvitational (see the OnlineScoreboard at www.johnstownbreeze.com for completeresults), where junior ViktorBaeza won the 110-meter hur-dles in 15.82 seconds. His timemay hold up throughout the sea-son, but by early May, it couldhave slipped a few notches.

So could the times of threeteammates who finished amongthe top one-third in that event:Andrew Harter, who placedthird in 16.49, Zach Schreiber(7th, 16.66), and Josh Schreiber(15th, 18.44).

Those efforts, and severalothers, contributed to the Ridersfinishing fourth in the season-opening meet that featuredschools from all classifications.

“The boys made a state-ment,” Sauer said. “We don’tusually push team scores unlessit’s conference. But for any kidto place at that meet, that meansyou’re one of the top athletes

among those 25 schools.”Dylan Cunningham placed

second in the high jump, clear-ing the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches, while Michael Mitchell wassixth (5-8). Josh Semmler fin-ished fourth (11-9) in the polevault, while Tanner Bonds tiedfor fifth (10-9).

Zach Schreiber finished

fourth in the 300 hurdles(43.12), with Baeza placing fifth(43.76).

Zachery Lagunas placedsixth (2:07.58) in the 800 run,and Isaac Krey was seventh (39-0¼) in the triple jump.

For the girls, Katie Novosadled the results with a fifth-placefinish in the discus throw (97-2).

Kylee Placke medaled twice intwo sprints (6th in the 200 dash,28.52; 7th in the 400, 1:02.82).Kiera Maldonado was seventhin the pole vault (7-6). BeckyEidson was eighth in the shotput (30-2).

And that’s just a handful of

With that many, Sauer andhis assistant coaches form vari-ous groups after warm-ups toconcentrate on specific events.

“We have jumpers who arein relays and throwers who wantto do other things,” Sauer said.“So there are people who areshared. But we have a team con-cept as well.”

Returning state qualifiersinclude Baeza (110 hurdles),Cunningham (high jump),Semmler (pole vault) Eidson(shot put), Kylee Placke (800,4x400 relay) and her twin sisterHaley (400, 800, 4x400), AbbeyKehr (4x400), Tanner Starr(pole vault), and Hannah Eining(100 hurdles), who is still recov-ering from abdominal surgery.

“The kids are working hard, and that’s all you can ask,”

Sauer said. “But I’ve beenimpressed so far.”

Having nice weather to startthe season has helped, he said,
