Page 7: 2012 Room to Bloom

Partnered with her mother in Palm Beach,

Celerie established a design office in New

York City and has spent the past fifteen

years cultivating a portfolio of much

publicized residential and commercial inte-

riors that are as unique and diverse as her

international clientele. The office has grown

from a humble 3/4 –size office

apartment in the West Village to a vibrant

and dynamic studio on 30th Street.

Known for her candor, humor and

approachable design advice, Celerie

published her first monograph Celerie

Kemble: To Your Taste in 2008 and most

recently authored Black and White: And A

Bit in Between, which was released by

Clarkson-Potter on November 1, 2011.

Celerie has recently appeared in J. Crew’s

‘Real Women’ ads and alongside industry

leaders in Benjamin Moore’s ‘Experts’

campaign. She has created to-the-trade

fabrics with F. Schumacher & Co. as well as

faux leather and technical surfaces with

Valley Forge.

A collection of floor coverings with Merida

Meridian will be introduced in the spring

of 2012 followed by the debut collection of

wall coverings for F. Schumacher & Co. in

August 2012.

Michael Boodro has said Kemble

Interiors “incorporates the serendipitous

and the sentimental without losing

clarity or strength.” The firm’s success is a

reflection of Celerie’s quirky design ethos,

which balances the aesthetic integrity of

the project with the needs and personality

of the client. To create a successful interior,

the process must feel well managed, the

client considered, and the budget respected.

“In life and design, it is not perfection you

should be after. There is beauty in the

faded and worn, the well loved, and the

sentimental… After all, life has seams. Your

home should be like a loosely woven fabric

of desires, memories, practical notions, and

even compromises.” – Celerie Kemble

Celerie Kemble Celerie Kemble’s childhood was in many ways a design tutorial spent

around construction sites, antique stores, and in the unique homes

designed by her mother and founder of Kemble Interiors Mimi McMakin.

A graduate of Harvard, Celerie worked briefly in film production before

quickly succumbing to what she calls a compulsion for design and the

creation of thoughtful interiors that “put the person in the place.”

Twenty-six-year-old William Henry Belk

opened a small bargain store in 1888 in

Monroe, N.C. His brother, Dr. John M. Belk,

joined him as a partner in the business

and together they expanded the company

throughout the South. The late John M. Belk

and Thomas M. “Tom” Belk, sons of William

Henry Belk, led the company for more than

50 years following their father’s death in

1952. Their efforts transformed outmoded

downtown Belk stores into expanded fashion

stores located in shopping centers and malls

across the South.

Today’s third generation of family

leadership is represented by the sons of

Tom Belk. Thomas M. “Tim” Belk, Jr. is the

company’s chairman and chief executive

officer and John R. “Johnny” Belk is president

and chief operating officer. H.W. McKay

Belk, who previously served as president and

chief merchandising officer, serves on the

Belk, Inc. board of directors.

Belk is taking bold steps to reinforce its

position as the South’s fashion leader. Over

the past seven years, we completed two major

store acquisitions and established our own

fine jewelry business. Additionally, we

re-launched a greatly expanded Belk.com web

site and are connecting with customers via

social media. Belk recently adopted a new

“Modern. Southern. Style.” brand identity

to replace the former “Belk B” logo used

since 1967. Today, we are investing millions

of dollars each year in store improvements,

information technology, eCommerce,

merchandising systems, marketing and other

strategic initiatives to support our continued

growth and success.

Belk continues its rich heritage of

community involvement and philanthropy

by contributing 2.5 percent of pre-tax

profits each year to support charitable

efforts in three major focus areas: education,

breast cancer awareness and research, and

community strengthening. In 2011, our Belk

Charity Sale events raised more than $10

million for nonprofits throughout the South,

and our inaugural Belk Bowl at Bank of

America Stadium attracted 58,000 college

football fans to Charlotte and gained national

media exposure for our company and city.

The future is bright for Belk as we work to

fulfill our vision “for the modern, Southern

woman to count on Belk first . . . for her, for

her family, for life.”

Belk Offers Modern. Southern. Style.

Belk has been meeting the evolving shopping needs of customers since our

founding in 1888. The South’s “hometown store” has grown from humble

beginnings into the nation’s largest privately-owned mainline department

store company with more than 300 fashion stores across 16 Southern states

offering the best in Modern.Southern.Style.

Page 19: 2012 Room to Bloom

It all started with a juice stand...At the bright young age of 21, an irreverent and enterprising New York socialite named Lilly McKim eloped with publishing mogul and citrus grove heir Peter Pulitzer.

Ditching the city for sunny Florida, the couple embarked on a glamorous and colorful life in Palm Beach. In need of a day job, Lilly opened a simple juice stand in 1959. She soon transformed her citrus-stained clothing into a line of brightly colored shift dresses in an array of cheery prints. Her designs quickly became the unofficial uniform of America’s splashy resort towns.

Fast forward more than fifty years. Lilly Pulitzer’s® distinctive prints and colors continue to delight and inspire customers to lead a colorful life.

For more than 15 years Belk has enjoyed the privilege of being a key department store to offer Lilly Pulitzer fashions including ladies, children’s, accessories and footwear in 17 stores across 6 states. Much like Lilly, Belk is friendly, fashionable and colorful with a mission to satisfy the modern Southern lifestyle like no one else. Together Lilly and Belk have found a sweet spot in the Southeast as their friendship has blossomed over the years. Lilly’s assortment certainly inspires Belk customers to lead a colorful life!

The 2012 Collection is all about pretty feminine florals and this Spring Lilly is in Full Bloom at Belk!

Page 24: 2012 Room to Bloom

The Surrealists were rebels, searching for new forms of artistic expression. They celebrated chance, spontaneity, and the uncanny as they explored the worlds of dreams and the subconscious. On February 11, 2012 the Mint Museum Uptown opened Surrealism and Beyond, a suite of three fascinating exhibitions that explore Surrealism and its legacy. Not only is it the first time that the Mint has presented an exhibition on this topic, but it also marks the first time that a project of this scope has ever occurred in this entire region of the country. All three exhibitions have been organized by The Mint Museum and two are accompanied by beautiful illustrated catalogues. Such an ambitious undertaking would not have been possible without the generous support of the Mint Museum Auxiliary.

The first exhibition, Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy brings together the haunting dream landscapes of Tanguy, one of the original members of the Surrealists, and his American wife Sage, to explore the influence that each had upon the other’s art. It is the first show ever to do so, and it has already received positive reviews in the New York Times and the Boston Globe while on view at its previous two venues.

Seeing the World Within: Charles Seliger in the

1940s gathers together approximately three dozen remarkable paintings created by the American artist Charles Seliger during the first decade of his career. Seliger burst onto the New York art scene as a teenager, exhibiting along-side older colleagues such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko and earning his first solo show at Peggy Guggenheim’s prestigious “Art of the Century” gallery when he was just nineteen. This is the first show to focus on the powerful biomorphic abstractions from this period of his career. After debuting in Charlotte it will travel to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice.

The final exhibition in the suite, Gordon Onslow Ford: Visionary and Voyager, is an intimate retrospective of the cosmic abstractions of Gordon Onslow Ford, a British-American artist who joined the Surrealists in Paris in the late 1930s. He later moved to this country, settling in the 1950s in California, where the landscape, light, and his experiences with Eastern art and philosophy inspired a new direction in his work. The show is drawn entirely from the collection of his late sister Elisabeth, and her son Max, who lives in Asheville, and is a testament to their close family relationship.

Be sure not to miss these three remarkable exhibitions that were made possible through the Auxiliary’s dedication and ongoing support!

Surrealism & Beyond: 3 Shows. 4 Artists. 1 Journey.

By Jonathan Stuhlman, Curator of American Art, The Mint Museum

The term “surreal” has become a common part of our everyday vocabulary, used to describe something surprising or out of the ordinary. It refers to an artistic movement, Surrealism, that emerged in Paris in the 1920s.

Thorton Dial is a keen observer of the human spectacle and its

narratives of corruption and moral strength, folly and triumph. As

an artist, he has spent the last two decades exploring the truth of

American history and culture in all its complexities and contradictions.

This exhibition presents a major survey of Dial’s work—an epic

gathering of over fifty large-scale paintings, sculptures, and wall

assemblages that address the most compelling issues of our time.

Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial has been made possible with generous support from Wells Fargo Private Bank. Exhibition organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art.

QCExclusiveQC Exclusive covers a wide gamut of topics for both men and women alike; many are in the luxury niche; many are human interest or cultural features, but all the stories we tell are told in relateable ways through solid writing and photography. Intertwined amongst our Southern roots and heritage are regional, national, and international topics and trends. There’s a refreshing dichotomy within the pages of our magazine and website because you are just as likely to find a fashion spread showcasing French or Italian brands like Chanel or Ferragamo as you are to find a spread on Southeastern wing shooting or fly fishing.

Over the next two decades, the collection

grew slowly and was dependent entirely upon

local donations. Then, in the mid 1950’s, the

Museum was to benefit from the efforts of a

dedicated group of community volunteers.

With the founding of the Women’s Auxiliary,

as it was known then, a long roster of

members have since contributed thousands

of volunteer hours to generate funds to

support the museum and its collection. The

Auxiliary has a long and celebrated history

with The Mint Museum.

Today, the collection at the Mint Museum

numbers over 31,000 items. The Mint

Museum Auxiliary has been a major

purchasing power behind the collection. The

Auxiliary has acquired thousands of artwork

for the Museum that includes paintings,

ceramics, costumes, sculptures, crafts, and

works on paper. It has been a rich journey

that began in 1960 with the Auxiliary’s

first art acquisition, Portrait of Sir Andrew

Cherry, by the English painter Frederick

Richard Lee.

The most important purchase of 1960 was

In the Glen by American painter John La

Farge. In the 1970’s, the Auxiliary purchased

112 items including Storage Jar. This piece

dates to 2200 BC and represents the oldest

Chinese piece in the collection. Also in this

decade, members of the Auxiliary founded

The Mint Museum’s costume collection

which now numbers over 10,000 items.

In the 1980’s, the Auxiliary purchased a

variety of artwork including works from

some of North Carolina’s most important

potters, and a work by Harvey Littleton,

known as the Father of North Carolina Glass.

Also in 1985 the Auxiliary created an

acquisitions endowment, nicknamed

EMMA, the Endowment for Mint

Museum Acquisitions. The purpose of this

endowment is to acquire works of art

consistent with the curatorial goals of the

Mint Museum in accordance with the

Auxiliary’s procedures. The funds are

raised through the Auxiliary’s annual Fall

Fundraiser and the Room To Bloom spring

celebration. The funds are currently

managed by the Foundation for the Carolinas.

In the 1990’s, the Auxiliary purchased over

$200,000 worth of Spanish Colonial Art and

acquired Nature’s Rushing Force which was

painted in 1868 and depicts the North

Carolina wilderness.

Over the years, the Auxiliary has contributed

greatly to the wealth of the museum’s

permanent collection. The funds generated

by the Auxiliary members have touched

nearly every area within the Museum’s

collection. The partnership between the Mint

Museum and The Mint Museum Auxiliary

has been rich, strong, and beneficial to both

the Museum and the city of Charlotte.

Auxiliary History

In 1936, the Mint Museum of Art opened as North Carolina’s first art museum although it had no collection. A year later, four paintings comprised its art holdings.
