201- ODAC Conference

Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation's largest Division III conferences. The 14-member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country. The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name chane to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washing-ton and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men's varsity sports, including foot-ball, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women's sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with three single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The conference expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the confer-ence in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999, and just recently Shenandoah University accepted an invitation to join the ODAC ful-time in 2012-13. Over the past 17 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III champion-ships in football, men's basketball, softball, baseball, women's lacrosse and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2009-10 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 49 NCAA Division III Championships since the '93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football, men's basketball and softball championships.Governance:The Conference is governed by a 13-member Presidential body consisting of all of the full-time members' CEOs. Dr. Billy Greer of Virginia Wesleyan is the chair of the ODAC Presidents' Council. In addition to presidential leadership, the conference's day-to-day operations are supervised by its Board of Directors, which consists of all conference member Directors of Athletics. Eastern Mennonite Director of Athletics Dave King serves as the current Board President with Virginia Wesleyan's Joanne Renn serving as President-Elect.Location:The conference office is located in Forest, Virginia at 16001 Suite B Forest Road.

2012 Season preview

The Randolph College 2011 men’s soccer season is a story right out of a Disney motion picture, as a team that was just started only five years before climbed the mountain top to earn the College’s first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title in a men’s sport. If that wasn’t enough, Randolph overcame 1-0 deficits in every game of the tournament, including the ODAC final against cross town foe Lynchburg College. Continuing the incredible run, Randolph followed that up by going to Newport News, VA and knocking off second-ranked Christopher Newport University, on its own field, in front of 1,997 fans in the NCAA Tournament open-ing round. After a 3-2 victory over DeSales University, Randolph trekked all the way to Redlands, CA where its magical run came to an end in a overtime 2-1 loss against Texas-Tyler in the Sweet 16. The WildCats finished the season ranked 18th in the nation, and had to feel great with 10 starters coming back in 2012. The rest of the conference agreed, as Randolph was picked as the preseason favorite in the conference, edging out Roanoke College by only one vote in the preseason poll. It was the first time ever that a team at the College has been named the preseason pick. Randolph head coach Bryan Waggoner, the 2011 ODAC Coach of the Year, will have the luxury of deploying a starting lineup that lost only Timmy Songer to graduation last year. That starting 10 along with a key core of returners understands that it’s a new year, and with that comes new goals and hurdles to clear. “We were about to experience that run that we went on, twice, and we know what it takes to get back there,” said senior midfielder Sam McGarrity (Midlothian, VA/James River). “It still takes a lot of focus and hard work to get back.” McGarrity also noted that team’s are going to start gunning the WildCats, and so it’s time to start thinking faster and using the system. “If we can learn to think faster than other teams, it’ll allow us to break down defenses as well as preventing goals.” Looking at this year’s roster and starting with the attack, the shining star of the group is junior All-American Corey Sindle (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester). Sindle was named the ODAC Player of the Year as sophomore after scoring 15 goals, leading the league. Sindle is as creative as it comes on the ball, and at times makes things look incredibly easy. Juniors Jacob Lusczek (Fredericksburg, VA/Chancellor) and Nick Cornell (Front Royal, VA/Warren Co.) will man the flanks after having standout seasons last year. Lusczek had five goals and a team-best seven helpers, while Cornell was an All-ODAC and All-South Region honoree after netting eight goals and setting six assists. These two helped Randolph lead the ODAC in goals, assists, points and pretty much every statistical category. Junior Tyler Gilchrist (Bedford, VA/Liberty) shook off an early season injury last year to have a very productive season at striker behind Sindle. Gilchrist has shined in preseason, and the coaching staff is very excited about having him healthy and ready to go. Fellow local product in sophomore Seth Dorman (Lynch-burg, VA/Liberty Christian) is a handful athletically for back lines, as he scored a pair of goals as a first-year. Juniors Celestin Kabamba (Woodbridge, VA/C.D. Hylton) and Tristan Luxner (Powhatan, VA/Powhatan) are both players that Randolph has seen bril-liance from at times. If these two players round into form this fall, they both could be huge for the WildCat attack. Some new names to look for in the attack include sophomore Julian Khalili (Falmouth, VA/Stafford) and first-year Joe Uzdavinis (Carrollton, VA/Smith-field). Khalili has great one-on-one moves and is lethal on the flank, and Uzdavi-nis could be one of the fastest players in the ODAC right now. He will be a threat for Randolph from day one, especially with his 6-3 frame and top notch speed. Transitioning to the men in the middle of the pitch, you look at an experi-enced returning group of players which include juniors John Vecchietti (Annan-dale, VA/W.T. Woodson) and Jacob Hood (New Market, MD/Linganore) as well as seniors Joe Skaja (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) and McGarrity. Vecchietti is a wizard with the ball at his feet, and could be the one of the most underrated players in the conference. Hood had a very effective sophomore campaign, as he was an All-ODAC

third-teamer a season ago after netting five goals and dishing out three assists. Skaja and McGarrity did most of their damage in the defensive midfield spot, though McGarrity scored a game-winner at Lynchburg College a year ago and Skaja potted a pair of tallies. Senior Nicholas DiLodovico (Cobb Island, MD/Laplata) is also back to fortify the defensive midfield spot, and will also see some time in the back as well. Sophomore Trey Padgett (Bedford, VA/Liberty) has netted a few goals in preseason practice, and looks to have gotten better in the attacking midfield position.

Of the newcomers to the midfield spot, first-years Grant Collier (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory) and Marcus Carter (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) have a ton of potential. Collier had amazing foot skills, is a fantastic passer and will help immediately in the center midfield, while Carter is a tough, aggressive defensive midfielder whose physical style reminds one of Arsenal’s Alexandre Song. The Randolph back line is fully intact from last year’s squad, as junior Will Wolf (Goldsboro, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) and sophomore Coulton Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) are flanked by juniors John Adams (Lynchburg, VA/E.C. Glass) and Nick Reemt-sen (Richmond, VA/James River). Adams noted that the experience together will help them this year. “I love playing back there,” said Adams. “I feel like we’re all connected, and I’m very excited to see how much we grow together in the back this year. Hopefully we can pick up a few more shutouts than last year.” The WildCats chalked up seven clean sheets a year ago. Looking at the starters, Wolf is what you want in a center back. The All-ODAC second-team selection scored four game-winning goals last year, highlighted by his header goal with seven minutes left in the ODAC title game to give Randolph a 2-1 lead. He is steady defensively, and deadly on set pieces. Watson is one of the strongest play-ers on the field pound-for-pound and rarely gets caught out of position. Adams is a speedster in the back, and has the potential to become one of the best left backs in the conference. Reemtsen is in his third year on the right side, and is as steady as they come. Reemtsen knows when to make runs, is great at overlapping and picks his tackles wisely. Look for this group to be among the best in the ODAC this year. Randolph has some solid depth in the back this year, which is something head coach Bryan Waggoner really was looking for. Junior Adam Gilley (West Point, VA/Wals-ingham) played well at times last year outside, and junior Travis Watson (Virginia Beach, VA/Salem) is gritty, does well with the ball at his feet and can get forward. Sophomore Conor Smolinsky (Stafford, VA/Stafford) returns to the team after a season away, and will help both in the middle and outside, while transfer Scott Holthaus (Gloucester, VA/Gloucester) should help immediately after his transfer from Hampden-Sydney College a year ago. First-year Treyveon Bullard (Crewe, VA/Nottoway) is still getting adjusted to the speed of the college game, but he is 6-3 and could develop into a useful player for the ‘Cats. First-year Ben Williamson (Chesterfield, VA/Steward School) is physically ready for the college game, and his versatility and ability to play multiple positions will come in handy this fall. The goalkeeping situation is in the best state it ever has been at the College, as Randolph boasts four stellar keepers. The WildCats have three returners with starting experience, including postseason standout Carter Smith (Greensboro, NC/Grimsley). Carter stood on his head at times during the playoffs, and also is a black hole for any-thing that comes in the box due to his 6-4 build. Sophomore CJ Stevens (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) is a fantastic well-round-ed goalkeeper, who cuts off angles, understands shooters and has amazing instincts. Senior Ryan Woloshin (Yorktown, VA/Grafton) is vocal in the back, brings possibly the best attitude to the field and knows tendencies. First-year Shelby Streeter (Fredericks-burg, VA/Fredericksburg Christian) has been great in the preseason, and he really looks the part of a top-notch collegiate keeper. The WildCats start their season Friday afternoon at Guilford College in Greens-boro, NC against the Cougars of Averett University. Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. For more information, log onto the official home of Randolph Athletics at www.randolph-wildcats.com. Facilities

RAD Center

Randolph Tennis Courts

WildCat StadiumThis new facility was completed in 2009 and plays host to the men’s and women’s soccer and lacrosse teams. WildCat Stadium features a FieldTurf surface which plays like grass but can withstand the pound-ing of sporting events and intramural contests year round. Also, the field is surrounded by a state-of-the-art eight lane track which is used for exercise and training purposes. The Stadium also has a scoreboard and flag present-tion straight across from the seating areas, which are elevated for a superb view of the action. Restrooms are located atop the plaza adjacent to the press box, which features wireless internet. WildCat stadium also boasts one of the more beautiful places to play in the league, with trees surrounding the north and west sides of the Stadium.

The Randolph Tennis Courts were recently renovated in the summer of 2011, and now are among the best courts in the ODAC. The hard court surface allows for fast play, while other amenities including court caddies and benches at each court were included. The courts are surrounded by hillside which makes for a stadium-like atmosphere when taking in a tennis match.

The Randolph Athletic and Dance Center (RAD Center) is one of the loudest gyms in the ODAC. “The Den,” the gymnasium in in the RAD Center, plays host to the Randolph men’s and women’s basketball teams, along with the volleyball team in the fall. PER has an elevated seating side, where fans can see all the action unfold. Weight room, athletic training facilities, a five-lane swim-ming pool and athletic administration offices are also located in the Center.

This is Lynchburg...

Lynchburg is a scenic city located near the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The area has an extensive history beginning with its founding on the James River in the 1760's by John Lynch as "Lynch's Ferry." Today the city has an urban population of over 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake, and Forest. Lynchburg's economy is based on the many high-tech manufac-turing companies located here including cellular communica-tions, nuclear energy, and machinery. This manufacturing and research orientation represents a shift from the mill-based econ-omy of the past, which included foundries, shoes, and textiles. Education is well-represented with five area private colleges and a public community college. Health care includes two hospitals, one of which, Lynchburg General, has been recently renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for the next century. Lynchburg is sometimes referred to as "A City Unto Itself", in part due to geographic and cultural isolation, but mostly in reference to the city's historical avoidance of State and Federal entangle-ments. The phrase was the title of a history book by columnist Darrell Laurant.
