The 2012 Page County Fair Stitch This!was held on July 18 at Wibhom Hall at thePage County Fairgrounds in Clarinda.Stitch This! is a six-hour design challengein which teams deconstruct garments andreconstruct them into a new wearable gar-ment.

Participants were asked to bring asewing machine and accessories for a dayof designing. This year’s challenge was aCinderella theme. Teams were given adress that was not at all suitable forCinderella to wear to the ball. The teamstransformed the dress into something wor-thy of dancing with Prince Charming.

Congratulations to Team Adventures –

Maranda Culbertson, Coin, and MistyHammers, College Springs – Stitch This!champions. Other teams were the DashingDivas – Loren Brady and Stacie Fischer,Shenandoah, and the Nebraska Top NotchStitchers – Kambrea, Kandalyn, andKarissa Davies, Clarinda. All participantsreceived blue ribbons.

There was a new fair event in 2012for 4-H members called Junk in aBucket. Page County businessesdonated a five-gallon bucket of“junk,” or metal scraps. 4-H mem-bers designed and created an exhibitby welding, screwing, bolting, orwiring the pieces together. The cre-ations were judged on creativity,workmanship, and stability. Therewas an excellent response; 16 4-Hmembers took up the challenge!

Brianna Holmes, Shenandoah,won Champion, and Morgan Ropeand Dagen Price, Clarinda, tied forReserve Champions. These 4-Hmembers received blue ribbons:Chad and Luke Allen, Red Oak; JackBrady, Shenandoah; Jack Campbell,Shenandoah; Noah Carlson,Clarinda; Kalob Davies, Clarinda;

Adrianna Holmes, Shenandoah;Jacob Hull, Clarinda; Janessa Jacobs,Clarinda; Wesley Johnson, Essex;Daniel Ohnmacht, Essex; GageStanton, Shenandoah; and DevinWright, Coin.

Results for Junk in a Bucket

Clover Kids is a fun 4-H programfor children in kindergarten throughthird grade. Children participate inhands-on activities designed to buildmany different life skills. One ofthose hands-on activities was deco-rating a dozen cupcakes on July 11 atWibholm Hall on the Page CountyFairgrounds in Clarinda. The cup-cakes were auctioned at the PageCounty Fair on July 26. The moneyfrom the auction supports the Page

County 4-H Youth Development pro-gram throughout the year. The totalfrom the decorated cupcake auctionwas $1,615. Page County Extensionthanks the generous buyers.

The Page County 4-H DecoratorShowcase was held on July 11 atWibholm Hall at the Page CountyFairgrounds in Clarinda. 4-H mem-bers had an hour to design a room onpaper. They chose coordinating tex-tures and colors from wallpaperbooks, paint chips, carpeting, uphol-stery fabrics, and drapery samples.

The Champion Juniors wereMikayla Adkins, Shenandoah, andJade Smith, Essex. The ReserveChampion Junior was Morgan Rope,

Clarinda. Champion Intermediatewas Karissa Davies, Clarinda, andReserve Champion Intermediate wasKambrea Davies, Clarinda.Champion Senior was Sheri Schaaf,Villisca, and Reserve ChampionSenior was Hannah Falk, Clarinda.

The 4-H members who receivedblue ribbons in Decorator Showcaseare Junior Kandalyn Davies ofClarinda and Adrianna Holmes ofShenandoah.

Norm Mier was inducted posthumously into the 2012 Iowa 4-H Hall ofFame. On July 26 at the Page County Fair, Bruce Ketcham, board mem-ber of the Page County 4-H Endowment Fund, presented Jennifer,Linda, and Megan Mier a certificate of recognition. Norm Mier and hisfamily were honored at the Iowa State Fair on August 19, at 3:30 p.m.in the 4-H Exhibit Building.

4-H Hall of Fame Inductees

On July 26 at the Page County Fair, Bruce Ketcham, board member of thePage County 4-H Endowment Fund, presented four $750 scholarships tograduating 4-H seniors. Ketcham commented, “Board members considerscholarships for higher education an important way of supporting 4-H mem-bers in their leadership development.”

Quentin Bangston is the son of Paul and Marty Bangston. He is a memberof the Fremont Farmers and 4-Hers and was the treasurer and historian. Partof his citizenship and community service involved painting bleachers at theEssex High School and assisting with the Essex Easter Egg Hunt. His favoriteproject areas were Visual Arts and Horticulture, and he took his Rolling HillsHeifer Project to the state fair. Quentin will be attending Iowa StateUniversity, where he will major in graphic design.

Quentin said, “I learned a work ethic from 4-H that helped me become vale-dictorian of my class and will boost my study habits in college. I will alsobenefit from my profits from livestock projects. I began saving in the fourthgrade.”

Nathan Harvey is the son of Charles and Gail Harvey. He is a member ofthe Nodaway Nuggets and was the historian. His favorite project areas wereBeef Cattle and Wood Working. For citizenship and community service,Nathan was a Junior Beef Superintendent for three years and helped set upand tear down during fair week. He is enrolled at Southwestern CommunityCollege in Creston and will major in Livestock Production.

According to Nathan, “4-H taught me to keep accurate records, which willassist me with my Livestock Production degree. 4-H also taught me to com-municate well with others and be a stronger leader.”

Anna Smith is the daughter of John and Shelly Smith. She is a member ofthe Nebraska Top Notchers and held many leadership positions, includingpresident, vice president, and treasurer. She received recognition for herRabbits, Working Exhibits, and Photography at the county and state levels. Acouple of her community service activities included helping her club cook andserve dinners at Faith, Food, and Fellowship and making baby blankets forfamilies whose loved ones were serving in Afghanistan. Her favorite projectareas were Rabbits, Photography, and Home Improvement. Anna will beattending Iowa State University where she plans to earn a degree in biology.

Anna shared, “4-H has instilled in me a drive to work hard and be creative,which will help me at college. It has also enriched my life with mentors andfriends that will support me.”

Tyler Steeve is the son of Joni Steeve and David and Beth Steeve. He wasthe president, vice president, and treasurer of East River and Pleasant Ridge.For citizenship and community service, Tyler presented at Farm Safety Daycamps and built picnic tables for the fairgrounds. His favorite project areaswere Beef Cattle, Horticulture, and Photography. He is enrolled at NorthwestMissouri State University in Maryville, Missouri, and plans to take courses inBusiness and Mathematics.

Tyler remarked, “4-H gave me strong connections in working with peopleand increased my confidence in communication skills.”

The board of the Page County 4-H Endowment Fund congratulates QuentinBangston, Nathan Harvey, Anna Smith, and Tyler Steeve for their long-termcommitment to 4-H and wishes them the best of luck!

Page County 4-H EndowmentFund Awards Four Scholarships

There was a new fair event in 2012 for 4-H members. Cook This! is a culinary chal-lenge where 4-H members baked an item that had to contain butter, eggs, flour, sugar,and vanilla. They could add other ingredients as well.

On July 12, participants brought their food items and recipes to Wibholm Hall on thePage County Fairgrounds in Clarinda. After the items were judged, they were sharedwith exhibitors in the 4-H Table Setting Contest.

Hallee and Mikaela Fine, Clarinda, tied for first place. Brianna Holmes, Shenandoah;Allison Johnson, Essex; and Dagen Price, Clarinda; tied for second place. Others whoparticipated in Cook This! and received blue ribbons were Skie Campbell, Clarinda;Adrianna Holmes, Shenandoah; Tattum Hughes, Clarinda; Morgan Rope, Clarinda;Kenzie and Kylie Shackelford, Clarinda.

Nathan Harvey, Yorktown; Anna Smith, Clarinda; QuentinBangston, Essex; and Tyler Steeve, Clarinda; received $750 schol-arships for post-secondary education from the Page County 4-HEndowment Fund.

Cook This! culinary challenge

The Cherry Pie Contest was held onJuly 11, at Wibholm Hall on the PageCounty Fairgrounds in Clarinda. This con-test was open to any 4-H member, and thepies were auctioned at the Page CountyFair on July 26. The money from the auc-tion supports the Page County 4-H YouthDevelopment program throughout theyear. The total from the pie auction was$1,505. Page County Extension thanks thegenerous buyers.

There were 14 entries this year. Preston

Runyon, Clarinda, won first place; KalobDavies, Clarinda, won second place; andKambrea Davies and Nick Nelson,Clarinda, tied for third place. Others whoparticipated in the contest and receivedblue ribbons were Kandalyn and KarissaDavies, Clarinda; Misty Hammers,College Springs; Tattum Hughes,Clarinda; Sheri Schaaf, Villisca; Kylie andKenzie Shackelford, Clarinda; AdriannaSickels, Clarinda; and Cheyenne andElijah Wheeler, Clarinda.

Cherry Pie Contest cooks up winners

The Page County 4-H Table SettingContest was held on July 12 at WibhomHall at the Page County Fairgrounds inClarinda. The purpose of the Table SettingContest is to provide youth the opportuni-ty to learn life skills of planning and com-municating, while expressing their cre-ativity in choosing a formal or casualtheme. Youth plan a menu, pick out tablecoverings, make or select centerpieces,design a place setting, and decide onclothing to complement the theme.

Kandalyn Davies, Clarinda, won firstplace in the Junior Formal division, andMagi Jones, Shenandoah, was the runner-up. Emma Gaffney, Essex, won first placein the Junior Casual division, and MorganRope, Clarinda, was runner-up.

Anna Carlson, Essex, won first place inthe Intermediate Formal division, andSkie Campbell, Clarinda, and AshleyFeller, Shenandoah, were the runners-up.Mikaela Fine and Cheyenne French,Clarinda, won first place in the

Intermediate Casual division, andKambrea Davies, Clarinda, was runner-up.

Stacie Fischer, Shenandoah, won firstplace in the Senior Casual division, andAndrea Allen, Red Oak, and AmberOhnmacht, Essex were runners-up.

These 4-H members received blue rib-bons in the Table Setting contest: SkieCampbell, Clarinda; Kalob Davies,Clarinda; Karissa Davies, Clarinda; andAshley Feller, Shenandoah.

The Region 17 4-H Table SettingContest was held on July 31 at the CouncilBluffs Library. 4-H members participatedfrom Harrison, East Pottawattamie, WestPottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery,Fremont, and Page Counties.

Kandalyn Davies received a purple inthe Junior Formal division, and EmmaGaffney received a purple in the JuniorCasual division. Mikaela Fine andCheyenne French received purples in theIntermediate Casual division.

Page County 4-H Table SettingContest results released

The 2012 Page County Fair WorkingExhibits were held on Friday, July 27, inthe Cow Palace at the Page CountyFairgrounds. A Working Exhibit is ademonstration that involves audiencemembers in hands-on learning.

Loren Brady and Stacie Fischer,Shenandoah, had the Top Working Exhibitand represented Page County at the Iowa

State Fair along with Jack Brady andBrian Fischer, Shenandoah; Ryan Niccoliand Brodi Jones, Shenandoah; and Kysaand Kelsie McClarnon, Blanchard.Kandalyn and Karissa Davies, Clarinda,were the alternates.

Colton Thornburg, Essex, received theOutstanding Junior Working Exhibit.

Working Exhibits announces winners

The Page County 4-H FashionRevue, Clothing Selection, and $15Challenge were held on July 13 atWibhom Hall at the Page CountyFairgrounds in Clarinda.

Fashion Revue is for 4-H memberswho are interested in constructingclothing and modeling a garmentthey have made. Mikaela Fine,Clarinda, received the Hope O’HaraMemorial Award for $100 for the topFashion Revue entry. Senior 4-Hmember, Loren Brady, Shenandoah,was selected to represent PageCounty at the Iowa State Fair. EmmaGaffney, Essex, receivedOutstanding Junior and a $50 giftcertificate to Weil’s Clothing inmemory of Mary Anne Marsh.

Clothing Selection gives 4-Hmembers a chance to show theirskills in selecting and purchasing anoutfit for a particular purpose. Theoutfits may be casual, sport or func-tional, or special occasion. Senior 4-H member, Stacie Fischer,Shenandoah, was selected to repre-sent Page County at the Iowa StateFair. Mikaela Fine received the TopIntermediate recognition. HalleeFine, Clarinda, received Outstanding

Junior and a $50 gift certificate toWeil’s Clothing in memory of MaryAnne Marsh.

The $15 Challenge requires 4-Hmembers to purchase an outfit for$15 or less at a garage sale, consign-ment shop, or thrift store. They thenmodel their purchase and tell thejudge where they bought the garmentand how much they paid for it.Mikaela Fine received the TopIntermediate recognition. MorganRope, Clarinda, receivedOutstanding Junior and a $50 giftcertificate to Weil’s Clothing inmemory of Mary Anne Marsh.

The 2012 Page County FairEducational Presentations,Extemporaneous Speaking, andShare the Fun were held on Monday,July 9, at St. John’s Lutheran Churchin Clarinda.

For Educational Presentations, 4-Hmembers present informationthrough demonstrations or illustratedtalks to an audience. Stacie Fischer,Shenandoah, received the TopEducational Presentation.Representing Page County at theIowa State Fair were Kalob Daviesand Kambrea Davies, Clarinda.Kenzie Shackelford and MorganRope, Clarinda, received theOutstanding Junior EducationalPresentation.

Extemporaneous Speaking isdesigned to encourage the develop-ment of communication skills

through enhancing the ability tothink, to organize, to speak, and toanswer questions readily before anaudience. Representing Page Countyat the Iowa State Fair were Kyle andStacie Fischer, Shenandoah.

Share the Fun is a talent competi-tion, and singles, duos, trios, or entireclubs can participate. Acts represent-ing Page County at the Iowa StateFair were Shenandoah Teamsters andTri M’s 4-H Club, with a skit; EmmaGaffney, Essex, with a dance routine;and Brian and Kyle Fischer,Shenandoah, with an interpretivetalk. The alternate State Fair actswere Stacie Fischer, Shenandoah,with a piano solo, and SkieCampbell, Clarinda, with a harp solo.Emma Gaffney also received theOutstanding Junior Share the Funact.

The first day of the 2012 4-H and FFAHorse Show was held July 26 at theHockenberry Memorial Horse Arena atthe Page County Fairgrounds in Clarinda.Kelsi Huseman, Clarinda, Iowa, was thejudge.

Austin Feller, Shenandoah, won GrandChampion Mare with Chinga. ReserveGrand Champion mare honors went toShelby Kinman, Clarinda, with Jaggie.

Morganne Haer, Villisca, won GrandChampion Gelding with Tuf. ReserveGrand Champion Gelding was won byTyler Means, Villisca, with Zaz.

Cooper Williams, Clarinda, won GrandChampion Pony with Buddy.

Allison Fast, Nodaway, won the 2012 Page County Fair4-H Beef Production contest with a 1,430-pound steer.Averie Hascall, Essex, got second place with a 1,435-pound steer. The final rankings were based on retail valueper day on feed. This value correlates with the profit fromfeeding calves in a feedlot. Allison’s animal had a retailvalue per day on feed of $5.064, while Averie’s was$4.769.

Allison’s entry had an average daily gain of 3.49pounds, ribeye area of 16 square inches, fat cover of 0.50inch, yield grade 2, and quality grade of Choice. Averie’sanimal had an average daily gain of 3.56, ribeye area of16.2 square inches, fat cover of 0.80 inch, yield grade 3,and quality grade of Choice Minus.

Of the 42 entries, 34 graded Choice Plus, Choice, orChoice Minus; 6 graded Select Plus; and 2 gradedStandard Plus. The steers were harvested at the TysonPlant in Denison, Iowa. Darrell Busby, Tri-County SteerCarcass Futurity Cooperative Director, collected and cal-culated the carcass data. The results from the top 20 arelisted below.

The Grand Champion Market Beef was shown byCheyenne French, Clarinda. Kallon Behrhorst,Clarinda, showed the Reserve Grand ChampionMarket Beef.

Jensen declared Grand Champion Rabbit in Rabbit Show Crabs takes Overall Grand ChampionMarket Lamb in Sheep Show

Luke Allen, Red Oak, showed the Champion in the Hog Lean Gain contest at the 2012 Page County Fair. Each swine exhibitorselects one pig that is scanned with an ultrasound to measure the loin eye and back fat at the 10th rib. These measurements arethen combined with the average daily gain (ADG) to arrive at a lean gain score. Allen’s 341-pound pig had an ADG of 2.33pounds, a loin eye of 8.9 square inches, and 0.94 inch of back fat, for a lean gain score of 0.9184. Reserve Champion went toOlivia Herzberg, Villisca, with a 310-pound pig that had an ADG of 2.13 pounds, a loin eye of 8.8 square inches, 0.62 inchesof back fat, for a lean gain score of 0.9141.

State Fair SuperSauerkrauts Honored

All 122 pigs that came to the 2012 Page County Fair were entered in the Rate of Gain contest. Luke Allen, Villisca, wonChampion in the Hog Rate of Gain contest. Allen’s pig weighed 55 pounds on March 24. On July 26, the animal weighed 341pounds and had an average daily gain (ADG) of 2.33 pounds.

Sadie Graham, Villisca, took Reserve Champion with a pig that had an ADG of 2.27 pounds. Graham’s pig weighed 320pounds.

Shea Jensen, Essex, wonGrand Champion Obedience,and Skie Campbell, Clarinda,received Reserve ChampionObedience.

Skie Campbell won GrandChampion Agility, and SheaJensen received ReserveChampion Agility.

In the Pre-Novice A Class,Jack Brady, Shenandoah, wasthe class champion. ClayWatterson, Shenandoah,received a blue ribbon.

In the Pre-Novice B Class,these 4-H members receivedblue ribbons: Spencer Baldwin,Farragut; Loren Brady,Shenandoah; and JayCeeJohnson, Shenandoah.
