Denali Stud Location: Paris, KentuckyOwners: Craig and Holly BandoroffWebsite: www.denalistud.com

Background: Craig and Holly Bandoroff’s 570-acre Denali Stud near Paris, Kentucky, is one of the Thor-oughbred industry’s leading bloodstock consignors.

Craig Bandoroff was a jockey in New Jersey in the early 1970s until a spill at Gar-den State Park in 1974 left him without the use of his right arm, forcing him to explore other career paths within the industry. The Bandoroffs each gained experience work-ing in various bloodstock and sales capaci-ties, and in 1990 they opened Denali Stud. “Denali” is derived from the name given by the Eskimos to Mt. McKinley and means “the great one.”

In the late 1990s, Bob Lewis and his wife, Beverly, sent their champion race-mare Serena’s Song to Denali when she was retired. Denali has sold several of Serena Song’s offspring, including Group 1 winner Sophisticat, by Storm Cat, for $3.4 million at the 2000 Keeneland July Selected Yearling Sale; Grade 2 winner Harlington, by Unbridled, for $2.8 million at the 2003 September Sale; and Colourful Score, a colt by Storm Cat, for $3.5 million, at the 2005 September Sale.

Denali sold champion Uncle Mo for $160,000 as a weanling at the 2008 Novem-ber Sale

A Maryland native, McDonald holds a degree in Animal Sci-ences from Cornell University and worked at various Maryland racetracks as an exer-cise rider and assistant trainer. He was an officer of Fasig-Tipton Company Inc. prior to buying Eaton Sales.

Eaton Sales served as agent for the dispersal of the W.T. Young family’s Over-brook Farm, which in 2009/2010 sold 205 horses for $38,606,000, ranking it as the third-largest dispersal in Keeneland sales history.

A native of Texas, Jones developed Walmac Farm into an in-ternational stallion station with such leading sires as Nureyev, Miswaki and Alleged. In 2005, he sold Walmac to his son, John T.L. Jones III, and Robert Trussell and remains as Director Emeritus.

Background: Taylor Made was founded as a boarding operation in 1976 by Duncan Taylor, the eldest son of noted horseman Joe Taylor, who was 19 years old at the time. Joe Taylor, an acknowledged author-ity on Thoroughbred breeding, developed John Gaines’ Gainesway Farm into a lead-ing stallion farm during his 40-year manage-ment.

Taylor Made quickly evolved into a full-service breeding and sales opera-tion, currently standing such stallions as Unbridled’s Song and Forestry. Today the 1,600-acre farm near Nicholasville, Ken-tucky, is owned and operated by the Taylor brothers – Duncan (president), Ben (stallion operations), Frank (boarding operations), and Mark (public sales).

Represented by its first Keeneland consignment in 1978, Taylor Made has sold more than $1 billion in Thoroughbreds. Fu-ture champions sold at the September Sale are Anees, Farda Amiga and Ashado. Background: Coolmore’s vast operation is headquartered in Fethard, County Tip-perary, and also has farms in Kentucky at Ashford Stud near Versailles and in Australia at Hunter Valley in New South Wales. John Magnier, a longtime patron of the Keene-land sales, is managing partner of Cool-more. Demi O’Byrne is a veterinarian who buys horses on behalf of Coolmore.

Magnier, whose family was promi-nently associated with jumpers in Ireland,

helped establish Coolmore as one of the world’s leading stallion operations. In 1975, legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien tapped Magnier to manage Coolmore for O’Brien and his partner, Robert Sangster. Their association resulted in Coolmore’s domina-tion of the European classics during the late 1970s and 1980s.

Today, Coolmore Ireland stands such leading stallions as Galileo (IRE) and Dane-hill Dancer, while Giant’s Causeway, Henry-thenavigator, Tale of the Cat and Lookin At Lucky, among others, stand at Ashford. In addition to its stallion operations, Coolmore encompasses the famed Ballydoyle training yard, where Vincent O’Brien conditioned such champions as Sir Ivor, Nijinsky II, Al-leged, Storm Bird and Sadler’s Wells, and today serves as home base for Irish cham-pion trainer Aidan O’Brien (no relation).

A keen investor, Magnier is annually ranked by the Sunday Times Rich List among the wealthiest men in Ireland. He principally campaigns horses in the colors of his wife, Susan, daughter of Vincent O’Brien. In recent years, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith have joined Magnier as business associates

at Coolmore. A resident of Monaco, Tabor founded the Prince Arthur betting shop chain, which he developed from two betting shops into a chain of 113 shops. In 1995 he sold the Prince Arthur chain to Coral, one of Great Britain’s largest betting shop operators. Tabor earned Keeneland’s gold tray in the fall of 2008 in recognition of his eight graded stakes wins at the track. Derrick Smith, who lives primarily in Barbados, made his fortune in property and currency trading.

Either individually or in various partner-ships, the Magniers, Tabor and Smith have been represented by numerous Group or Grade 1 winners and champions in Europe and the United States. This year, the part-nership won the 2012 Epsom Derby (G1), Irish Derby (G1) and 2,000 Guineas with the champion Camelot, a son of leading Coolmore sire Montjeu (IRE), who died in March 2012. Other recent successes for the Coolmore team include wins in the 2011 Epsom Derby (G1) with Pour Moi; Prix du Jockey-Club (G1) and Irish 2,000 Guineas (G1) with Roderic O’Connor (IRE); Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) with Misty for Me (IRE); and 2010 Irish Derby (G1) and 2011 Arling-ton Million (G1) with Cape Blanco (IRE).

Sheikh Mohammed also owns Darley Stud Management Company Ltd, which is headquartered at Dalham Hall Stud, also near Newmarket. At the races, Northern Farm-bred horses have had many successes, breeding cham-pion older mare Admire Groove, twice

winner of the Queen Elizabeth II Com-memorative Cup in Japan. Yoshida’s horses Delta Blues and Pop Rock finished 1-2 in the 2006 Melbourne Cup (G1).

Northern Farm bred such 2010 Group 1 stakes winners Vermillion (Kawasaki Kinen), Apapane (Japan Oaks and 1,000 Guineas) and Rose Kingdom (Japan Cup).

Shadai FarmLocation: Hokkaido, JapanPrincipal: Teruya “Terry” Yoshida

Background: The Yoshida family’s Shadai Farm is one of the world’s most famous Thoroughbred operations. Shadai Stallion Station, home of such leading stallions as the late Northern Taste and Sunday Silence, is located on the island of Hokkaido in Japan.

Principal Teruya “Terry” Yoshida’s grandfather, Zenuske Yoshida, was one of the first Japanese to import Thoroughbreds from the United States on a major scale. He died in 1946, leaving the family business to his son Zenya Yoshida (Terry’s father) and his two brothers. Zenya Yoshida founded Shadai in 1955.

Zenya Yoshida had formerly owned a stud farm in the Tokyo region that the Japanese government purchased in 1958 as part of the land for Narita International Airport. Yoshida used the money to buy land on Hokkaido, the northern island that is now Japan’s principal center of Thor-oughbred breeding, and developed Shadai Farm there.

When Teruya Yoshida graduated in economics from Keoi University in 1969, his father sent him to Kentucky to man-age Fontainebleau Farm, then the Ameri-can branch of Shadai. He spent five years at Fontainebleau, during which time he spent $100,000 for Northern Taste, a son of Northern Dancer who won the 1974 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp and became the champion stallion in Japan for 11 consecu-tive years.

Sunday Silence, winner of the 1989 Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1) and Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) entered stud at Shadai in 1991 and became a perennial lead-ing sire. He died in 2002 at the age of 16.

Shadai Stallion Station currently stands about 27 stallions. They include 2002 Ken-tucky Derby (G1) winner War Emblem and champion Deep Impact.

Shadai purchased Lucky One, carrying a full sibling to champion Blind Luck, for $1.85 million at the 2010 November Sale.
