Celebrating Entrepreneurship

I’m extremely excited when I look at the lineup for this magazine issue. It has

been a while since we have included travel options in LG Magazine but we have a new relationship with Hoberg’s Club Resort and they have chosen to present their beautiful propertymembership opportunities toour readership. The resort istucked away in Lake Countynear the largest natural lake in California, Clear Lake (home of the Clear Lake Hitch and Prickly Sculpin) nestled amongst Mount Konocti.

Whether you want to get back to nature, where Tule Elk and well over 100 different avian species abound, or just get away and enjoy occasional

concerts or trips to their spa coming this summer, a visit is welcome. Before vacation season however, we have important and fun upcoming events. Make sure to get involved with the library opening, and support the many beneficial events and offerings they have scheduled. Did you know that the Rotary has plenty to celebrate this year? On February 21st Mayor Steve Rice will read a specially prepared Rotary Proclamation announcing that each year the town will honor the community services of both Morning and Noon Rotary Clubs by naming February 23rd Los Gatos “Rotary Day” – this coincides with the 107th Birthday of Rotary. Don’t forget to sign up for the Los Gatos Rotary “Great Race” in April and check out additional Save the Date calendar items on page 18. You may have heard all the rage about sugar lately in the media, specifically how the consequences of sugar consumption is not quite as sweet as most thought. Health advocates have been avoiding excess sugar intake and trying to improve their diet and lifestyle for years now. Sometimes it takes a little

extra push and work to improve your lifestyle. If you would like to have a partner in this endeavor, make sure to read Lisa Richardson’s (Fitness Clinic) advice on page 12. Nutritional intake guidelines are important, but don’t belittle the value of exercise. Lisa firmly recommends a consistent workout, and documenting your diet. Who knows, it may keep you from eating the wrong items if writing it down makes you more aware and better able to analyze whether you have a healthy balanced diet. We welcome many more new businesses advertising in this issue such as Blacy’s Jewelry Store, Burrell School Winery, Shoe Candy of Los Gatos, Aldo’s Cafe and Hoberg’s Club Resort. Please support these generous advertisers as the opportunity presents itself. If you are interested in promoting your business, don’t hesitate to contact me, as we plan to grow to a 32-page publication to give the Town of Los Gatos more coverage.

The Spirited Businesswoman Behind Shoe Candy

The exciting location of the attractive Shoe Candy storefront, situated in beautiful downtown Los Gatos on Main Street can’t be beat. As you’re strolling around to your favorite restaurant,

or just enjoying an afternoon shopping spree, the Shoe Candy near Old Town is a “must visit.” The shop belongs to Lucille Mendes, a bright, friendly, and dedicated shop owner. Lucille has an astute understanding of the latest styles, what looks good on different body shapes, and can assist a customer to find brands to fit their budget– large or small. Lucille takes on a role as a private shopper or consultant for her customers. She remembers faces and has a good idea of what styles will excite her clients on their next visit, and genuinely cares.

Lucille’s store being named “Shoe Candy” is actually ironic, for Lucille herself didn’t own a pair of shoes until she was 9 years old. She is proud to share her story of overcoming challenges, moving from another country, and ultimately reaching her dream.

“I’m forty-eight years old and married with four kids. I was born in Portugal and came to this country when I was thirteen. All my life, my dream was to have a shoe store. I’m addicted to shoes. Being raised in Portugal from a family with seven sisters, I walked barefoot until I was nine and that’s one of the reasons why I’m attracted to shoes. Two years ago after I found out that I had cancer, after treatment, I decided to accomplish my goal and open a shoe store. I did this towards the end of 2009 and never looked back. In 2011, I moved my store location to Main Street in Los Gatos and added apparel to my store. I want to thank all of my Los Gatos and Bay Area customers for supporting me. Its an honor to be a part of the beautiful town of Los Gatos. I thank you all and God too for being able to accomplish my dream.”

Lucille participates in fundraisers to help the community, she offers very affordable pricing on her collections, and accommodates customers with excellent service. She is able to put together complete outfits

Page 7: 2012, New Year Issue, LG Magazine

for her clients. She has jewelry, pants, jeans, shirts, dresses, handbags, jackets, coats, belts, shoes, and countless other accessories. She has the ability to piece together these items creatively to establish a nice outfit suitable to her individual customers. She is quick to share her favorite shoes as well. She is not just a store-owner, she is her own customer!

This picturesque eleven-acre Los Gatos estate, purchased by Ken and Linda Raasch in 1996, was originally built by Ken and Jill Gimelli and completed in 1989. It took over 6 years to finish the

construction and it necessitated numerous trips to Europe to procure the precise materials and the exact artisans to complete this magnificent grand home. The Raasch Estate, filled with old world elegance and attention to detail that is renowned in the area, is nestled in its own forested valley. Rolling lawns and manicured gardens complete this very private setting. A secluded tree-lined road leads to the front of this 10,000+ square foot home on a flagstone driveway that took stonemasons over a year to fit each stone precisely. This six bedroom and 5 ½ bath home is entered through a beautifully carved wooden front door under the limestone reliefs of two seated mountain lions. Upon entering onto the marbled foyer floor, your eyes are drawn to a ceiling mural that was painted in 1989 by artist Roberto Lupetti. (Born in 1918 in Milan, Italy, Lupetti graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. As a student at this school he was offered a position to help restore the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel. An opportunity to befall few, he worked directly upon the famed fresco by Michelangelo leaving him feeling “insignificant”). Meticulously carved wood paneling surrounds the foyer and a grand staircase with gorgeous hand carved banisters, giving way to the formal living room bathed in sunlight. The living room’s delicately carved pink marble mantel was made in Pietrasanta, Italy, along with other mantels, bathroom counters, and bathtub surrounds. The ceiling’s custom decorative ornamental plaster design was meticulously hand applied piece by piece. The grand kitchen, the favorite and most used room of the house for this family of six, features 16th century French tile chosen by the builder. (The Raasch family visited a castle hotel in Lyon, France, which had the identical floor tile). The pot rack that surrounds the kitchen island as well as the massive copper stove hood was built by metalsmith E. A. Chase, world renowned sculptural and architectural metalsmith, who also constructed the massive 11 ½’ tall by 18’ wide artistic gates that greet you at the property entrance. The walls are painted with a mural inspired by the owners’ trip to Rome. The family room or great room features French limestone tile floors and its meticulously carved wooden ceiling was made in England. The ceiling support beams are detailed with relief carvings depicting scenes from many of the great books of literature. The 7 foot high English mantel dominates the room along with the carved bookshelves and paneling and curved bar area surrounded by stained glass windows made by John Forbes. A beautiful marble statue in the guest bath, hand carved limestone balustrades from Bath, and a unique shingled roof taking 10 months to complete are just a few of the other fascinating highlights of this estate. The guesthouse on the property now houses Linda’s sewing classes and is the home to her small business, www.projectfunway.com. Albeit, the grandeur and the history of this manor, one cannot deny that the feeling of “home” dominates after visiting - which truly captures the spirit of this estate for this active Los Gatos family.

“Everything looks great, and we are very happy with the end result. You’ve delivered on everything we’ve asked for and the results are outstanding.”

Hello Everyone! We are so excited to now offer a safe and comfortable skin tightening and body contouring procedure. Nusilk Med Spa is now offering the 5th generation of Radiofrequency (RF).

10 years ago, I was involved in a study for one of the first RF technologies. Although it was somewhat effective, it was painful with sporadic results. The first generation of RF emitters had inconsistent heating. This was painful, and sometimes caused blistering or indents from burning non-intended tissue. Like all technologies, there were some bugs to work through over the last decade, and happily I now stand behind this technology. The 5th generation of this RF technology really hits the mark of efficiency and safety. RF is an advanced technology that safely heats the collagen in the skin. When consistent energy is delivered, collagen in the body will contract, providing a tightening of skin in areas that have lost their elasticity from various reasons including aging, stretching from weight gain, or even pregnancy. In addition, it helps regenerate new collagen resulting in tighter and a more youthful skin appearance. Unlike other light/laser-based therapies, RF is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and is not affected by skin color. The consistent and controlled heat results in a tighter skin surface, breaking up uneven areas and shrinking excess tissue. It can contour those stubborn areas that won’t budge no matter how much we exercise. Although, these treatments will benefit most everyone, it is not the best option for those with excessive skin laxity or fat that would be best treated with surgical improvements such as tucks and liposuction. 3 DEEP skin tightening is great on those trouble areas of the face, neck, arms and knees. It tightens the laxity of the skin which improves one’s skin texture greatly. It can reduce the overall size of any area being treated. 3 DEEP body contouring reduces the volume, shape and circumference of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs. The consistent heat is very comfortable and the client has no downtime. Your skin may be slightly pink but this fades quickly. You will see some results immediately and continued improvements over more time. Most areas require 3-6 treatments. Throughout the years, I have worked with and studied a number of crazy technologies. My favorite was one that looked like a hair dryer from outer space that was supposed to grow hair. My colleagues affectionately named it the “chia pet” chair (no, it didn’t work). So, I am very hesitant to recommend anything that has not proven to be effective. This treatment is very effective. I can honestly say that I was initially skeptical because there was no pain. In “the olden days,” if it didn’t hurt it didn’t work. However my jowls tell a different story. I am very excited to be able to offer this amazing treatment. All consultations are complementary. Come see if this is the right choice for you. — Kimberly Schubert RN

Exercise by Lisa Richardson MA, RD

In 1982, I was a 22 year old dietetic intern. I had to practice my counseling skills on a lot of hospital patients. I would get reprimanded if I spent any time talking with an obese patient about exercise. Now, we know better. As a matter of fact, we know that exercise is one of the only 2 factors that predicts long term (over 5 years) weight loss

success (the other factor is keeping a food diary). We also know that exercise is predictive of graceful aging, both physical and mental EVEN if the person is overweight. We now know that strength work and aerobic exercise are a better prescription for type 2 diabetes than is restrictive eating. We now prescribe structured activity as part of the treatment for high blood pressure and moderate to mild depression. Even with studies and science showing the benefits of exercise, the truth is that by the year 2030, half of Americans will be considered obese, and the leading cause of death will be directly related to SEDS (sedentary death syndrome). Let me put on my exercise science hat and give you the “skinny” on working out. 1) Calling all couch potatoes or desk jockeys! For improvement in lab levels ( blood glucose, HDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, blood pressure, bone density) just 20 minutes of activity 3x per week is enough to see results. AND, the 20 minutes does not have to be consecutive! So, take the stairs, park further away, walk your own dog or do short bursts of high intensity (marches, squats, lunges) movements while you are folding laundry. It doesn’t seem fair, but going from nothing to a little something gives you the biggest bang for your exercise buck. 2) Calling all weekend warriors! If you want to improve your fitness levels, that is, how you measure up on certain tests (time for 1 mile, hamstring flexibility, pushups) against your peers then you should be doing 4-5 x 30 minute structured exercise sessions each week, with at least 2 x 20 minute segments dedicated to strength work. 3) Calling all Silicon Valley Residents! If you want to change your appearance, then you must include 60 minutes of structured activity each day with at least 2 x 20 minute strength sessions during the week.

I know how hard it can be to achieve #3 and I work in a gym environment! But, I challenge anyone who says they cannot attain level #1 exercise, and most of us could work into level #2 with just a little planning. Think of it as a mechanism for saving on MD visits, and medications; think of it as being able to participate in activity events without injury or embarrassment, and think of it as increasing your efficiency, because I promise, that if you make time for exercise you will have better energy and “more time” for your everyday life.

Enter Ramona Tan, the CASE in-house Project Designer. Ramona is a degreed, certified interior designer with past experience in designing model homes and custom furniture. She earned a CAPS certification in Universal Design from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Says Jim, “Ramona is the perfect designer for our company. She is exceptional at not only space planning and layout but is very knowledgeable about the pros and cons of different fixtures, finishes, and soft-treatments for a wide range of client needs. She produces all our final Computer Aided Design system drawings to document details for the building department, our team, our partners, and most importantly, the homeowner.” At CASE, they strive to improve. “We’ve assisted four of our employees to become certified in their fields and three more are planning to do so in the next year,” shares Jim Kabel. This ultimately benefits their customers.

“Case gave us what we wanted—a ‘Wow’ kitchen. Plus it was a pleasure to work with all of the people. They were wonderful!” – Diane Tanda

CASE San Jose’s record is highly recognized: Fourteen NARI (National Association of the Remodeling Industry) design awards in the past 6 years, a Guild Quality GuildMaster award in 2010 and 2011 for quality and customer satisfaction, Top 500 recognition from Qualified Remodeler Magazine for the past 5 years, and induction into Remodeling Magazine’s Big 50 in 2010 as one of 50 US companies recognized each year for their excellence in a number of operational areas.

Jim Kabel, a California native with an electrical engineering background, left high tech in 2005 after a successful 25 years at HP and Agilent Technologies, to begin a business with his wife Debbie, via a franchise

agreement with CASE, one of the nation’s largest full service remodeling companies, as the Kabels felt they offered the right amount of independence and flexibility. Since that time, they’ve expanded as a full-service remodeler providing a range of services from handyman repairs to new space additions, with a strong emphasis on kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Their customers are happy, and Jim now a NARI Certified Remodeler, recently had a customer invite the entire crew back to have an Italian dinner in their newly remodeled kitchen!

“Our experience with Case from beginning to end was absolutely fabulous. They took our ideas, made the house of our dreams and then some.” – Doug Claar

They work towards creating a great customer experience, and in fact conduct monthly free seminars to help potential clients learn about how to plan and budget for remodeling. Jim adds, “It was clear that to deliver anything more than a simple ‘pull and replace’ bathroom, we needed to help homeowners visualize the possibilities by presenting options for both layout and final design details. Initially, we did this through a combination of in-house and partner-provided design resources. It soon became clear we could make this easier for our clients through a one-stop, design-build business model.”

Community: Along the way, running a local business has enabled the Kabels to be even more active in the community. Jim is active in the Chamber of Commerce, a Tabard Theatre board member, and provides high school student internships.

Personal: Outside of work, we’re avid San Jose Sharks fans. Rachel (their daughter) and I play the guitar and piano respectively and we’ve formed a small band with some of our employees with Mike Brennan on drums, Chip Utley on lead guitar and Eric Copus on bass. But don’t look for us to play in public anytime soon– we only play for pizza and beer!

Opposite page:Doug and Rita Claar had a long list of desired features including an open design to make the kitchen and family room a combined gathering place, more storage, privacy from the living and entry, all while maintaining the access to the backyard and unobstructed visibility through the recently replaced windows and doors. Several design options were explored and ultimately a layout removing the existing dividing wall between the kitchen and family room was chosen. The kitchen triangle was arranged to keep existing windows at the kitchen sink and just above a lowered counter for paying bills and organizing and storing recipes.

This page:Wayne and Diane wanted to update the kitchen to reflect their new lifestyle which included hosting large family gatherings and spending more time in the kitchen baking. By removing the wall cabinets and reconfiguring the layout to include an expansive peninsula, the kitchen was able to capture the natural light that flowed in from the nook window and patio door. The long peninsula now provided abundant prep area and cooling areas for baking and also opened a larger walk aisle to allow multiple people in the same space.

Poised for flight, racers took off as starting guns sounded in neighboring Saratoga and Los Gatos. Headed in both directions, the runners traveled the scenic 4-mile course, passing each other at a midway

point on Highway 9 in Monte Sereno. It was 1978 when the first Great Race was run. Created by Saratoga mayor Bill Glennon to foster community participation in training for marathons, the town boasting more participants was awarded the Glennon Cup. Through the years, the Great Race has become a local tradition. Presented by the Rotary Club of Los Gatos, the 35th Annual Saratoga to Los Gatos Great Race will take place on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at 9:00 AM. The race starts at 14420 Big Basin Way in front of Little Amsterdam Coffee Shop in Saratoga and ends in front of Travel Advisors on Santa Cruz Avenue in Los Gatos.

“Highway 9 is the link that ties Saratoga and Los Gatos together,” says three-time race winner Mike Dyer. “It is a beautiful road and a real fun road to race on. It doesn’t hurt either that the course is mostly downhill.”

Leslie Sokol participated in the Great Race with her husband Steve and son Alex, who was 7 at the time. She competitively race-walked as they ran it.

“It’s a good, fast course,” she said. “We all did well.”

The Great Race attracts nearly 2,000 entrants and ends with a Fun & Fitness Fair in downtown Los Gatos featuring smoothies, local massage therapists, chiropractors, sponsor booths and a live band. Dyer likes the inclusivity of the event. “You get everyone from the really

competitive types to parents and grandparents pushing strollers with children,” he says. “I like the fact that the whole community

participates.” Race Chairperson and Rotary Club member Michael Norcia appreciates the unique flavor of the Great Race. “We have children as well as elite runners competing with a 5 mile pace,” he says. “It even used to include dogs. It’s a South Bay tradition and I think the Rotary will always support it.” For Sokol, the race was an adventure. “The novelty is that

it begins and ends in different locations,” she says. “We took a shuttle bus from Los Gatos to the start in Saratoga. It takes place

in the heart of two quaint towns. For people who like to road race, it’s a good one.”

Race sponsors include Sereno Group, Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Good Samaritan Hospital, El Camino Hospital, Cornerstone Properties, Barracuda Networks, CPO Ltd., as well as Athletic Performance and Runners Factory.

Willie Harmatz, owner of Athletic Performance and one of the Great Race founders, is proud of the legacy he helped to create. In addition to being one of the race’s sponsors and a track guide for the race, Harmatz coached Los Gatos High School’s track team for 25 years, running its track meets as well as the Dammit Run. “It’s a great way to get the community involved in promoting fitness,” he says.

For five years the course went in both directions. Norcia ran the race when he was a Junior High School student in the late 70’s. “I ran towards Saratoga,” he says, “That was the cool way because it was uphill.” Dyer enjoyed passing the runners coming the other way. “I’d like to see them bring that back,” he says. That’s not likely to happen due to the complexity of logistics, electronic timing, the double expense of police and having to close two lanes of Highway 9. “It’s a better experience for runners to all finish in the same place and time,” says Norcia. The Great Race raises about $30,000 for scholarships for local high school students and more than a dozen charities supported by the Rotary Club of Los Gatos. “Our many projects are our attempt to live the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self ” says Norcia. “Without the Great Race and Crab Fest we wouldn’t be able to do nearly what we’re able to.” All 120 members of the Rotary participate in putting on the race. Many ran it when they were in middle or high school. Norcia believes this race is special due to its longevity, the fact that it runs through three towns and because its logo is designed by a Los Gatos High School student. “It supports local restaurants and businesses,” he adds, “and the causes of one of the best service organizations in the South Bay.”

With her little boy in a jogging stroller, Margaret Bennett enjoyed participating in the race with her Las Madres Playgroup. “We had been walking and jogging together for a few months and one of the women suggested we do the race together,” she says. “We got up at the crack of dawn with our babies in strollers. It was very family-oriented and supportive. We turned the corner at Santa Cruz with a crowd of people lining the streets cheering on our baby brigade. It sure was a lot of fun!” For Bennett and her Las Madres group, it was also a fond memory. “We all wore our t-shirts for months, if not years afterwards,” she says.

“It’s a beautiful course whether you run or walk it,” says Dyer. “It’s great to hang out in Los Gatos and enjoy all of the post-race festivities with the fellow competitors. What better way is there to spend a weekend morning?”

Additional Information:Race registration is $30 or $35 after April 3.
