During his first year at Northeast, Nick Thomason made an impact on his fellow teammates.Thomason returns for a second season

to make an impact on the Mississippi As-sociation of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) and the rest of the gridiron world.Thomason begins the season as North-

east’s leading returning tackler from a team that went 6-4 during the 2011 cam-paign and made it to the first round of the MACJC State Playoffs.During that playoff game, Thomason’s

defense held the South Division champion to just 17 points during regulation before Mississippi Gulf Coast Community Col-lege was able to escape with a 20-17 win in overtime. Now, Thomason is ready to lead the de-

fense to bigger accomplishments.Thomason, a 6-1, 230-pound linebacker

from Muscle Shoals, Ala., was a standout for Class 5A Muscle Shoals High School where he played middle linebacker for the Trojans.Thomason was a Classes 4A-6A All-Area

football honorable mention his senior year as a Trojan and help lead his team to a 9-3 overall record.“I played the “Mike” spot [middle line-

backer] in high school and we had a lot of fun and success running the 4-3 defense,” Thomason said. “We were 9-3 overall but we lost in the second round of the playoffs and it left a bad taste in my mouth.”Thomason still remembers the pain of los-

ing in the playoffs from high school and also from his first year at the junior college level.“My first year here; we had a great run but

ended up falling to Gulf Coast in overtime in the first round and that left another bad taste in my mouth,” Thomason said. “I am ready to win a championship this year.”During his first year in Booneville, Thom-

ason finished with 48 tackles – good for fifth on a team full of sophomores – but with Eli Canton going to Troy University after an 84-tackle season, Devin Lindsey (59) at Delta State, Anthony Brown (56) at Memphis and Frankie Lee’s 50 tackles all moving on, Thomason was left to lead the

defense that ranked as one of the best in the state and the nation.Thomason knows that will be a tall task

with a young team this year but the Muscle Shoals-native hopes to build off what he learned from last year and said he will em-brace the opportunity of being in a leader-ship role this season.“It’s a big difference coming in as a soph-

omore, I learned a lot from the older guys (last year) but this time I will have to help lead the way,” said Thomason. “We’ve got to pick up where those guys left off last year. We were solid and ranked as one of the top defenses in the state so we’ve got to step it up again this year too.”Northeast was ranked as high as number

one in the state on defense to start off the 2011 season but will be under a new de-fensive coordinator in coach Travis Macon this season. Macon replaces former coordinator Jeff

Carter but the veteran Tiger coach will use his experience and his trust in his players like Thomason to help Northeast’s 2012 defense.“Nick will be a leader for us on and off

the field this season and is being recruited heavily by a lot of schools,” Macon said. “We look for him to do some good things for us at the linebacker spot.”Thomason said his team goals is “to take

it to the ‘ship [championship], take it all the way home and win a championship and we got a good team again this year so anything is possible.”In his freshman season, Thomason record-

ed 48 tackles including 32 solo stops and 16 assists along with three tackles-for-loss (TFLs) for five yards. While appearing in all 10 games for the

Tigers, Thomason came away with one pass break-up, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery which he returned for 37 yards. As part of the Tiger defense that came

away with 17 interceptions during the 2011 season, Thomason was credited with one interception that he returned for 29 yards and almost had another one at the end of regulation against Northwest Mississippi Community College but the pass was ruled incomplete.Thomason looks to help the Northeast

defense improve on its reputation as being one of the toughest in the league. During the 2011 campaign, Thomason and crew al-lowed just 302 yards per game overall and limited the opposition to just 114.5 yards on the ground and 188.2 yards through the air. However, Thomason knows that he will

have to step up and lead the team this year and said he is ready and willing to do just that.
