Greetings!

As president of the National Association of the Deaf (NAD), I am pleased to issue this Call to the Conference. Please join us on July 3-7, 2012 at the 51st Biennial NAD Conference at the Hyatt Regency Louisville and the Kentucky International Convention Center in Louisville, KY!

!e theme of this year’s conference is “Nothing About Us, Without Us!”.

!is NAD Conference will be very di#erent, with lots planned for you!

We are partnering with the famed DeaFestival Kentucky - everyone will get to see deaf artists, poets, comedians, and more. !is event will be a true feast for the eyes!

In addition to the Kentucky DeaFestival being open to everyone without admission, the Exhibits at the NAD Conference are as well! !e Conference workshops are also open without charge to everyone who is a NAD member!

We have made sure the 2012 NAD Conference is a#ordable to everyone and are delighted to o#er an Early Bird Combo I rate at the very low price of $135. We know that the youth of today are our leaders of tomorrow, and invite all youth to our Conference to contribute their skills and join in the fun. In partnership with Deaf Youth USA (DYUSA), we are o#ering discount rates to young people age 18-30. We urge young advocates to join us in Louisville and rock our world!

Families are welcome to be part of our Conference as well as Kentucky DeaFestival! We are o#ering free admission to all events for children up to two years old. For children and teens between the ages of three and 17, we o#er free admission to the workshops, College Bowl preliminaries and Finals, and Miss Deaf America preliminaries and Finals. In addition, children and teens of this age range can purchase discounted rates for the Opening Ceremonies, Bu#et, Baseball Game and Fireworks on Tuesday evening and the NAD Bene$t BBQ Dinner on Saturday evening. We hope you will bring your children.

Start the Conference on July 3rd at the Opening Ceremony followed by a sumptuous bu#et and then a thrilling game, all at the Louisville Bats baseball $eld. Fireworks will end the evening, and we get more $reworks the next evening as we celebrate America’s 236th birthday! Hurry and get tickets to be part of the Steamboat Belle experience on the Ohio River to truly celebrate the Fourth of July in style!

Come watch college students vie against each other in the exciting College Bowl, which for the $rst time will expand to include other colleges and universities competing against the traditional teams from Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID/RIT), and California State University at Northridge (CSUN).

Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our Miss Deaf America Pageant! Join us as we watch this last competition in its current format, and learn about the new program that will showcase young deaf and hard of hearing leaders of tomorrow.

We are pleased to announce that the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) Board has agreed to host their Board meeting in Louisville, Kentucky just prior to the 2012 NAD Conference. !e entire WFD Board will stay throughout the week to meet all of you! Help us welcome them to the United States and exchange ideas for a brighter future together.

!e NAD has partnered with the highly acclaimed DeaFestival Kentucky, a gathering of visual and performing artists who celebrate the language, culture, diversity and arts within the deaf and hard of hearing community. !is year’s event, as part of the 51st Biennial NAD Conference, will be a true feast for the eyes!

!e DeaFestival Visual Artists Studio, with 50 artist booths,

will be at the NAD Exhibit Hall all week, at the Kentucky

International ConventionCenter. Performing artists

will be a part of Conference activities. Admission is free!

Watch DeaFestival Kentucky performing and visual artists showcase their talents and crafts at the the Visual Artists Studio, Children’s Program, SpotLight !eater and on Saturday at the Jam Tent on Fourth Street in the heart of Louisville- there will be something for everyone!

!e Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) and Knowledge Center on Deafness

A Biennial NAD Conference tradition since 1988, the College Bowl brings together young, quick-thinking students for a spirited evening ofacademic competition. Teams vie for the coveted silver trophy and scholarships as the audience tries to guess the correct answers. !e expanded format will bring new competitors to the $nals.

Will the winner be one of the legacy teams, Gallaudet University, National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, California State University at Northridge, or a surprising up-and-coming college or university? Come and $nd out!

Miss Deaf America Finals & Live AuctionFriday, July 6, 20127:00 -­ 10:00 pm!e 40th and last-ever NAD Miss Deaf America Ambassador Program gives talented women who win the preliminary competition, the opportunity to vie for the title of Miss Deaf America.

Contestants representing their state associations of the deaf will showcase their self-con$dence and poise, demonstrate their talents, express their opinions and share their ambitions while competing for the title to become a role model and ambassador for the NAD.

!e NAD Live Auction will o#er exciting artwork from DeaFestival Kentucky Visual Artists studio as well as other wonderful items, services, and opportunities.

Proceeds from the Live Auction will bene$t NAD advocacy e#orts to safeguard the civil, human and linguistic rights of the American deaf community.
