32 JUNE 2012Ang kaginhawaan ay nasa kasiyahan, at wala sa kasaganaan.

Gigi recalls: “Noah takes the GO train with me every day. There are days -- Tuesdays and Thursdays -- that he does not get home until 8 p.m.”

A typical day for Noah starts at 8 a.m. He is then in his traditional page uniform.

His daily duties involved delivering water, notes, messages and documents to the MPPs inside the Chamber.

Math, language, politics, friendshipsPages have a variety of special duties.

His was to deliver the Clerk’s books. The pages were tutored in Math and Lan-

guage. They learned about the Canadian legislative process.

On Fridays, they had field trips around To-ronto, visiting the Second City, the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum and others.

They had a scavenger hunt at the Legisla-tive Building and visited the “haunted attic”.

Noah met students from across the prov-ince, made new friends and learned to work and bond with everyone.

He admitted that it was an amazing ex-

BALMACEDA for his invaluable role in the es-tablishment of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headquarters in the Philippines.

Both resolutions were introduced by Sen-ator FRANKLIN DRILON.

The Senate said it “expresses its highest re-spect and appreciation” for Magsaysay-Ho’s contribution to the development of Philippine arts and culture.

“It also recognizes former Commerce and Industry Secretary Balmaceda for his self-less and able representation of the Philippines in several important capacities leading to the establishment of the Asian Development Bank as well as his invaluable role in the location of the ADB headquarters in the Philippines,” the Senate Resolution added.

Balmaceda lobbied to have the ADB headquarters in Manila. He won the support of eight other Asian countries, namely China, Vietnam, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand. On December, 1965, Manila prevailed over Tokyo as the ADB’s per-manent site, winning by just one vote.

“The Filipino people owes a debt of grati-tude to former Secretary Balmaceda for his nationalistic efforts and impeccable diplo-matic poise,” the resolution noted.

Filipinos owe Balmaceda an even more profound debt for his services afterwards, in-cluding his functions as Special Adviser to the President on ADB affairs.

He also served as chairman of the 14-nation committee on preparatory arrange-ments for the establishment of the ADB and the Philippines’ first alternate director of the ADB. PNA

perience that gave him an inside look and a better understanding of what transpires at Queen’s Park.

Job well doneAt the end of his term, he received his

Certificate of Recognition. The pages had their official group photo.

Noah had pictures with Ontario’s key politicians. He was also provided with a refer-ence letter for a job well done.

He met Ontario Premier Hon. DALTON MCGUINTY and Ontario Lieutenant Governor Hon. DAVID ONLEY before he ended his tour of special duty.

Experience worth passing onNoah said he would definitely recom-

mend the legislative page program to fellow Grades 7 and 8 students.

He encouraged children of diverse back-grounds to apply.

Expert seeks help for reefs at riskFrom page 6

Bleaching oc-curs when heat- or ultraviolet radiation-stressed coral pol-yps expel symbiotic algae from coral tis-sues, leaving corals with a whitish colour.

The algae pro-vide most of the corals’ food and oxygen. Other algae eventually colonize the bleached reefs.

The Coral Reef Alliance note that

the death of reefs in-creases with length and severity of bleaching.

Authorities have been promoting the management and protection of reefs,

noting these resourc-es also face a lot of pressure from over-fishing, pollution, sed-imentation, inappro-priate land uses and other threats.

Coral reefs serve as foraging ground for various marine species.

A square kilome-tre of healthy coral reef is enough to pro-duce some 20,000 kilograms of fish an-nually.

“That’s enough to feed about 400 people,” Aliño said, adding that each of these persons can have some 50 kilo-grams of fish to con-sume annually.

Only about five percent of the coun-try’s coral reefs cov-ering some 2.5 million hectares are in excel-lent condition.

Some 30 percent of reefs nationwide are recovering from damage. PNA

INDANAO-based Li-ceo Folkloric Dance Troupe of the Liceo de Cagayan Univer-

sity recently performed at the Hue Festival in Hanoi, and raised over US$1,600 to help rehabilitate areas devastated by storm Send-ong in December 2011.

Their show delighted the dip-lomatic corps and the Filipino and Vietnamese communities.

The Hue Festival is an inter-national Vietnamese event of culture, arts, and tourism staged every two years, gathering Viet-namese and foreign art troupes to promote economic and cul-tural exchanges.

MLiceo Folkloric dance troupe raises $1.6K in Hanoi for Sendong victims

The Liceo’s performance was sponsored by the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organization, the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Filipino community led the Pinoy sa Ha-noi, and the Philippine Embassy in Hanoi.

The dance troupe has been instrumental in propagating the diverse culture of Mindanao in the global scene.

The Liceo has performed in dance festivals in Brunei, Thai-land, Singapore and Malaysia. It started in 1983 as a contingent in Kagay-an Festival, an indigenous dance competition in Cagayan de Oro City. PNA

On social media, people were amused and said that the bill will probably hit more than half of those men in congress.

This law might create a dent on the two-timing behaviour of spouses.

When this bill becomes a law, would the ‘Filipino Casanova’ become a dying breed?

Lacson-Noel says that “The bill aims to protect the institution of marriage”.

But whether the bill when passed as a law would serve to be an effective deterrent to marital unfaithfulness would remain to be seen.

But I am pretty sure that the men and women who have fallen into the habit of cheating on their spouses are now feeling scratchy in their seats.

ICOLE DATOL, MARKO RAQUENO and RAINA RESPLANDOR will join ten other finalists who will compete in the 2012 Asian Canadian Talent Search (ACTS)

at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater To-ronto on June 30.

All of Filipino roots, Datol, Raqueno and Resplandor will try to outsing and outdo equal-ly-talented finalists from the Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communities to inherit the ACTS champion title from compatriot INAH PATRIZIA, 2011 ACTS winner.

Competing against the three are AMY LU and JODIE JAHNKE, both of Chinese origin; LILI NGUYEN and TAM DUONG, both of Vietnam-ese origin; BENJI PARK, CHARLIE PARK, CHRISTI-NA LEE, KEVIN KIM, MATTHEW SONG and STEVE KIM, all of Korean origin.

Publicist ANNA DO said ACTS has been a much-awaited annual singing contest that has given young Asian Canadians the chance “to have their voice heard above thousands”.

The Canadian Multicultural Council-Asians in Ontario developed the competition to allow Asian Canadian youth to come together and celebrate their heritage and culture.

The ACTS is designed to nurture young vo-cal performers in their early stages and provide a platform for them to display their talents.

They represent their community and they highlight the undiscovered talent and star power that exists in Toronto.

The competition is open to all Asian Ca-nadians aged 15 to 30. Auditions started in April; the semifinals on May 27.
