2012 NABE NCBP NCBF MIDYEAR MEETING 1 NEW ORLEANS

Dear Bar and Foundation Leaders:

We welcome you to New Orleans for the midyear meetings of the National Association of Bar Executives (NABE), the National Con-ference of Bar Presidents (NCBP), and the National Conference of Bar Foundations (NCBF), January 31 through February 4. Within this booklet, you will find the schedule of our jointly sponsored programming as well as those organized separately by our respective organizations. To see all meetings at-a-glance, please turn to pages 4-5.

In addition to meeting jointly with NCBP and NCBF, NABE has collaborated with ACLEA to encourage cross attendance at their respective programs on Tuesday, January 31 and Wednesday, February 1. NABE programming starts in earnest on Wednesday, February 1 with the plenary session, “I Live in the Future & Here’s How it Works,” featuring Nick Bilton, lead technology writer for The New York Times. Fifteen different NABE breakout sessions follow, continuing through Thursday, February 2, addressing such topics as virtual conferencing, using metrics to chart and measure the success of your association, generating non-dues revenue and sponsorships, human resources issues, and much, much more. NABE’s Wednesday Night Event at Pat O’s at Jax Brewery will provide a casual opportunity for networking among bar executive colleagues.

Joint NCBP/NABE/NCBF programming begins on Friday, February 3, with the plenary session “The Three R’s of Disaster Prepared-ness: Recognition, Readiness, Response.” Panelists will share tools to help associations develop continuity plans, plan and implement services that help members prepare for and recover from disaster, and serve as organizational leaders in communities stricken by the unexpected. Following the plenary, officers and staff from bars and foundations will attend two rounds of workshops sponsored by NCBP, NCBF and the Metropolitan Bar Caucus (MBC). Among the topics will be reacting to a presidential term that does not follow the planned script; assisting and retaining new lawyers in the bar association; practical technology tips for bar leaders and members; best practices in local bar involvement in judicial elections; and perfecting the approach to soliciting potential foundation donors.

Following the workshops and the NCBP/NABE/NCBF Joint Luncheon, staff and elected bar leaders will take part in discussions with participants assembled by the ABA Young Lawyers Division and the ABA Diversity Center on ways to increase the return on invest-ment from bar pipeline and leadership development programs, while foundation leaders focus on ways to mobilize board members to raise funds. The MBC will feature its traditional “Beer and Bull Session,” providing a venue for sharing issues of particular interest to leaders of metro area bars. Friday activities will end with an evening reception among New Orleans’ famous majestic parade floats at Mardi Gras World.

On the morning of Saturday, February 4, NCBP programming begins with breakfast roundtables, an address by ABA President William T. Robinson III, updates on issues facing the bar and a roll call of participating bars by region. NCBF will feature a plenary session on marketing plan development for non-profits followed by “Sharing Your Wealth,” a show and tell opportunity for founda-tion leaders to feature their bars’ activities and programs.

We extend our appreciation to our program sponsors. Please be sure to visit them during the meeting sponsor breaks to explore their products and services. We also thank the NABE, NCBP, NCBF and MBC program committees and boards for their efforts to make the midyear meetings a success as well as our hosts in Louisiana who have provided support and guidance.

Finally, thank you for your attendance. We hope that you enjoy the programming and all that New Orleans and Louisiana have to offer.

Sincerely,

Dana J. Collier Smith, NABE President

Frederic S. Ury, NCBP President

Stephen E. Chappelear, NCBF President

The Three R’s of Disaster Preparedness: Recognition, Readiness, ResponseThe national disasters of the last year have again underscored the need for business continuity planning on the part of individuals and businesses, including bar associations and law firms of all sizes. Katrina sounded the alarm and focused our attention on the broader implications of disruptions to “life as we know it.” Now, over time and through pain-staking experience, our panel of experts will share lessons learned and offer concrete “takeaways” to address any disrup-tion of business practices:  - tools to develop an association business continuity plan- services that help members plan for and recover from a disaster- models for the bar association role as a community leader- legal services programs to aid disaster survivorsMODERATOR

Joint Workshop 1A – What to Do When “Your Year” Gets HijackedBalcony J/K, 4th Floor“Your year” will serve as a model for generations of bar presidents to come, with initiatives charted out and timelines in place. Suddenly, something unexpected happens, maybe of crisis proportions, or just a series of events, all adding up to detours from your well-planned jour-ney. How will you handle these “pop-ups” that disrupt your textbook schedule? Hear sage advice from bar leaders who have been there and succeeded – sometimes – and are all the wiser for the experience.MODERATOR

Joint Workshop 2A – Public Service Projects on a Shoestring BudgetBalcony I, 4th FloorNot all service projects require big budgets to get off the ground. Hear

how, with a little ingenuity, some savvy partnering, and a lot of heart, the legal community can make a difference: for the public and the profession. MODERATOR

Joint Workshop 4A – A Practical Introduction to Business Continuity Planning for Metro BarsMardi Gras Ballroom, Salon D, 3rd FloorDangers posed by wide-scale disasters such as severe weather and power outages are well understood. Less obvious is the destructive potential of local events or firm-specific crises. From a small building fire to the loss of a key client to staff disruptions, myriad risks face large and small firms every day and put their continued existence at risk. This session will discuss business continuity (BC), an important step beyond disaster recovery planning. BC encompasses emergency management, disaster recovery, and post-event resumption. Specific topics include risk as-sessment and mitigation, business impact analysis, and continuity plan development. Attendees will be introduced to online and free resources that aid in the creation of simple but effective business continuity strate-gies and operating plans. Time will be reserved at the end for questions. PRESENTER

Joint Workshop 5A – Anatomy of “The Ask” Balcony N, 4th FloorThe most effective way to raise money is face to face. Unfortunately, this is also the scariest way to raise money. Join us for a lively conver-sation as we break down donor solicitation into its components and take you through “the ask,” step by step. Come prepared to practice!PRESENTER

Joint Workshop 2B – “A New Normal” —An Update on Ethics 20/20 and Preview of Developing ProposalsBalcony I, 4th FloorCreated in 2009, the ABA Commission on Ethics 20/20 has focused on the impact that technology and globalization has had on the prac-tice of law. Its seven working groups, through public hearings, white papers and presentations to bar and bench groups, have considered how to match the rules guiding the practice with the reality. Join our experienced panel for a conversation about the matters coming before the ABA House of Delegates next August –- technology, outsourcing, confidentiality –- and proposals under development for the February 2013 midyear meeting, including non-lawyer ownership.MODERATOR

Joint Workshop 3B – Establishing Public Trust, Confidence and Reputation: Strategies for Long Term ImpactBalcony L/M, 4th FloorFor decades, public opinion polls ranked lawyers just above used car salesmen and members of Congress. Over the years bar associations have responded with various targeted public education campaigns to explain the role of lawyers and the justice system in our society. Perhaps the “answer,” if there is one, is the “way of the tortoise” –- through a consistent, cohesive, and comprehensive communications strategy. Our expert panel will share concrete examples of ways in which bar associations, large and small, have effectively and economi-cally told the stories of the good lawyers do, with greater impact on the public and the bar’s budget over the long term. Join us for an interactive panel discussion of several topics, including judicial evaluations, the role of your bar in the campaign process, bar leader support of specific candidates, judicial fundraising, criticism response committees, candidate civility creeds, and the pros and cons of the association “taking a stance.”  CO-MODERATORS

Joint Workshop 5B – Fundraising House PartiesBalcony N, 4th FloorA fundraising house party combines the intimacy of a major donor “ask” with the excitement of a benefit event – and unlike an event, you can organize one in six weeks. We’ll discuss how to identify a host committee, develop an invitation list, prepare a planning calen-dar, ask for money at the party, and engage your board in creating and running the party.

METROPOLITAN BAR CAuCuS

The Metropolitan Bar Caucus (MBC) is a sub-group of the National Conference of Bar Presidents (NCBP) that seeks to address the interests and the concerns of major metropolitan bar associations throughout the United States. Established in 1979 as the National Caucus of Metropolitan Bar Leaders, the organization became the Metropolitan Bar Caucus in 1993. At annual and midyear meetings held in conjunction with the ABA and the NCBP, the MBC presents programs exploring a variety of topics including pro bono activities, diversity, membership, financial issues facing metropolitan bars, community involvement and recruitment of young lawyers to join and participate in metropolitan bars.
