Dr. Shirley C. Raines became the 11th presi-dent of the University of Memphis on July 1, 2001. She is the first woman to hold the presidency of the University, which was founded in 1912. The University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a high research university, with almost 23,000 students and 2,500 employees. Previous to her appointment at the Univer-sity of Memphis, Dr. Raines was Vice Chancel-lor for Academic Services and Dean of the Col-lege of Education at the University of Kentucky. While at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., she received the Distinguished Faculty Member award and has received two research awards from the Eastern Educational Research Association. She is the author of 14 books and numerous journal articles and is widely regard-ed as an expert in teacher education and early childhood education. During the years of Dr. Raines’ tenure at the University of Memphis, the following build-ing projects have been completed: the FedEx Institute of Technology, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management, the Student Activities Plaza and fountain, the clock tower, University Services Building with new bookstore, additions to the Carpenter Student Housing Complex, the renovation of Wilder Tower, the University Center, the Living-Learning Residence Complex and relocation of the Law School to the historic downtown loca-tion on the Mississippi River. Improvement to athletic facilities have also been a priority with the construction of the Ath-letic Training Facility, Penny Hardaway Hall of

Fame, Tiger Softball Complex, FedExPark, Frank L. Flautt Golf Center, and upgrades and renovations to the football training facilities, Liberty Bowl Me-morial Stadium and the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Described in The Commercial Appeal as “powerful, prepared and personable,” she has become known for her effective work in building productive partnerships on and off the campus. This emphasis has enabled the University to realize significant increases in annual giving to the University. Establishment of the University of Memphis Research Foundation along with the University’s focus on engaged scholarship in the community has facilitated an increase of sponsored research grants and contract awards by almost 100 percent since the beginning of Dr. Raines’ tenure in 2001. Major focus areas of her work with students include an increased em-phasis on the retention of students, expansion of the University’s Honors and Emerging Lead-ers programs, the establishment of a guaran-teed internship program for qualified students, living-learning residential and curricular learn-ing communities throughout campus. Dr. Raines served on the board for the NCAA for five years and chaired the Presiden-tial Task Force Oversight and Monitoring Group while also serving on the Board of Directors of C-USA. While Chair of the Board of Directors of C-USA, Dr. Raines led the conference through realignment. Dr. Raines earned her Doctorate in Educa-tion and her Master of Science degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Her Bach-

elor of Science degree is from the University of Tennessee at Martin. She also completed the Management Development Program from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She has returned to Harvard for the past four years as a keynote speaker for the Institutes for Higher Education addressing new university presidents and chancellors. A native of Bells, Tenn., she is married to retired professor, Dr. Robert J. Canady. In his re-tirement, he is a stained glass artist and a pri-vate pilot. Bob and Shirley are the parents of four adult children and five grandchildren.

3 R.C. Johnson came aboard in February of 1996 and immediately set forth in bringing U of M Tigers athletics into national prominence. Over the last 15 years, the dynamic administrator has built Memphis into a nationally-recognized athletics program that has participated in five bowl games and has competed in 14 postseason men’s basket-ball tournaments. Under Johnson’s direction, do-nations to the department have risen steadily and more than $7 million has been raised each of the last three years. Also, in the last eight years under Johnson, the Tigers have captured 17 total Conference USA titles in men’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s track and field. The men’s basketball program has garnered five regu-lar-season titles (2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and five C-USA Tournament championships (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011), while the women’s soc-cer program claimed consecutive league champi-onships in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Men’s soc-cer won the C-USA Tournament in 2004, while the men’s outdoor track and field and women’s golf programs claimed league championships in 2007. While he has already spearheaded two ma-jor capital campaigns that raised over $21 million in private funds for athletic department projects, Johnson announced in June 2011 a major capital campaign to directly benefit the Tigers football program. “Vision for Victory,” as it is billed, was developed to raise $10 million for a 74,000-square-foot indoor practice facility, design upgrades for the current facility and the resurfacing of the cur-rent grass fields. Johnson’s previous capital campaigns in-cluded a $12.9 million effort that benefitted nearly every area of the Memphis Athletic Department. Included in the project was an addition to the Ath-

letic Office Building, which includes the Anfernee Hardaway Hall of Fame, a weight room and turf practice field for the football program, FedExPark for the baseball program that was unveiled for the 2010 season, the Frank L. Flautt golf practice facil-ity, a renovation of the Finch Center men’s basket-ball practice facility as well as a renovation of the women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms. Johnson’s first capital campaign was previ-ously the largest fund-raising effort in the history of Memphis athletics. The $8 million campaign in-cluded a new 8,000-square-foot football and bas-ketball office complex addition, the Larry O. Finch basketball practice facility, which is still considered one of the best in the country, and a complete ren-ovation of the Murphy Athletic Complex. During his tenure, Johnson has created the Ath-letic Director’s Honor Roll, the Tiger Scholarship Fund Board of Directors and the Athletic Director’s Ambas-sador’s Club. The Ambassador’s Club, which started with two members in 1997, has reached an all-time high of 41 members under Johnson. A significant revenue source for Tigers Athletics, members of the Ambassador’s Club pledge to commit $500,000. In June 2007, Johnson inked a lucrative long-term contract extension with Learfield Sports, which enabled Tiger Sports Properties to retain the multimedia rights for Memphis Athletics through 2017. The Tigers signed on with Learfield Sports in 2001, granting the partner radio and television rights, athletic venue signage, game day promo-tions and sponsorships, as well as the official ath-letic department website. Terms for the contract call for the Tigers to receive a financial guarantee each year of the agreement and to participate in annual revenue sharing. In 2008, the U of M en-tered into a five-year, $11.3 million partnership with Nike to provide shoes, apparel and equipment for all Memphis athletic teams. A believer in academic excellence as well as athletic success and national prominence, Johnson leads a department that set school records this past

year with 56 percent of its student-athletes achiev-ing a 3.0 or higher during the 2010 fall semester (196 student-athletes) and a departmental GPA of 3.01 for the 2011 spring semester. Seven teams achieved their highest semester GPAs during the 2010-11 academic year. In May 2010, 48 student-athletes earned degrees, marking the largest group for one ceremony since 2002 when the athletic aca-demic services department began keeping records. Before taking at Memphis, Johnson was re-sponsible for directing a Temple program with more than 500 student-athletes in 20 men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports, including nation-ally-visible programs in men’s basketball and foot-ball. He was named Temple’s director of athletics on May 9, 1994, after serving nearly six years as director of athletics at Miami (Ohio) University. He had also previously led the department at Eastern Illinois from 1980-88, and was the associate ath-letic director at Northern Iowa from 1974-80. A former football coach himself, Johnson served as an assistant at Mankato State University from 1968-74. He coached at Youngstown State University during the 1967 and 1968 seasons af-ter serving as an assistant coach at Northern Iowa (1965-67) and the University of Iowa (1963-65). An Ottawa, Ill., native, Johnson holds his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Iowa in 1965 and earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa in 1967. Johnson is a member of the National Association of College Directors of Athletics and serves on the NCAA Leadership Council. A veteran administrator in Conference USA, Johnson sits on both the C-USA Bowl Committee and the league’s Finance Committee. In addition, he is a member of the University of Memphis President’s Council. He was appointed by Governor Haslam to the Tennes-see Sports Hall of Fame Board. Johnson and his wife, Melba, have three chil-dren: Jeff, P.A. and Michelle; five grandchildren and one great grandson.

For almost a century the University of Memphis has been a catalyst for progress in the city of Memphis, the state of Tennessee and the surrounding Mid-South region. From its incep-tion as a normal school dedicated to the educa-tion of public school teachers, to its role today as an educator of technologically-savvy gradu-ates who face a complex world, the University of Memphis has always fulfilled its current mis-sion while looking forward to and planning for its future. Exceptional students from Tennessee, from every other state in the nation and from almost 100 countries around the world choose to attend the University of Memphis. They come here on the recommendation of their major professors at European universities; they come here to study subjects that are offered no-where else; they come to study alongside men and women who are recognized and respected throughout the academic and scientific commu-nities as foremost in their fields. Ever forward-looking, the University of Memphis is poised to enter one of its most his-toric and productive periods. From the faculty and staff we have in place to our alumni and benefactors, our “people assets” have never been more willing, able and generous in their efforts to build an academic environment that makes a life-long impact on the young minds at the U of M. The University of Memphis was founded under the auspices of the General Education Bill, enacted by the Tennessee Legislature in 1909. Known originally as West Tennessee State Normal School, the institution opened its doors Sept. 10, 1912, with Dr. Seymour A. Mynders as president. Students in the first classes selected blue and gray as the school colors and the tiger as the mascot. Tradition holds that the colors, those of the opposing armies during the Civil War, were chosen in commemoration of the reuniting of the country after that divisive conflict. Over the next decade, The Desoto year-book was created, the first library was opened in the Administration Building, the first dining hall was built and the first men’s dorm was built; today that dorm, Scates Hall, houses the College of Arts and Sciences’ Dean’s offices. In 1925, the name of the college changed to West Tennessee State Teachers College. Three years later, the Brister Library was built, named after two-term president John W. Brister. In 1931, the students created a campus news-paper, The Tiger Rag, and in 1935, the school’s agriculture department was discontinued. The college changed names again in 1941, becoming Memphis State College, and in 1946, J. Millard “Jack” Smith became president — the first alumnus to hold the position. In 1950, grad-

uate studies were initiated, and in 1954, the school switched from a quarter to a semester system. In 1957, the state legislature designated Memphis State full university status. In 1959, the university admitted its first African Ameri-can students, and the first doctoral programs began in 1966. The 1970s, under President Cecil C. Humphreys, saw new buildings constructed across the campus, including a University Cen-ter and a 12-story library. In 1983, MSU became the first public university in Tennessee to gain accreditation of its entire curriculum. The 1990s were characterized by another name change and another building boom. In 1994, MSU became the University of Memphis, and the Ned R. McWherter Library was complet-ed. Moving into the 21st century, the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Manage-ment and the FedEx Institute of Technology have made their mark on the University landscape. Today, the University of Memphis is one of Tennessee’s three comprehensive doctoral-ex-tensive institutions of higher learning. Situated in a beautiful park-like setting in the state’s larg-est city, it is the flagship of the Tennessee Board of Regents system. It awards more than 3,000 degrees annually. With an enrollment of almost 23,000 stu-dents, The University of Memphis has 26 Chairs of Excellence, more than any other Tennessee university, and five state-approved Centers of Excellence.

5 Considered the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock ‘n Roll,” the city of Memphis’ musical roots run deep. However, music is just a chapter in the history as well as the future of the city located in the heart of Mid-America. Memphis, named after the capital of ancient Egypt, has big city amenities with a small-town feel. Whether you are a hardcore sports enthusi-ast, a history buff, a music aficionado, or you just like to relax and watch as boats travel the Missis-sippi River, Memphis has something for everyone. Downtown Memphis has continued to grow and thrive, and two of the most visible projects have been the construction of AutoZone Park and FedExForum. AutoZone Park is the home of the Memphis Redbirds, the St. Louis Cardinals’ Triple-A club. The 14,320-seat stadium includes 1,500 club seats, 48 luxury suites and is located at the corner of Third Street and Union Avenue across from the world-famous Peabody Hotel. The Memphis Tigers base-ball team also plays some of its most high-profile opponents in the top-notch facility. The city’s newest downtown project is Fe-dExForum, an entertainment arena that houses both the Memphis Grizzlies of the National Bas-ketball Association and the University of Memphis men’s basketball team. The $250 million state-of-the-art arena features a 35,000-square-foot out-door plaza where fans of all ages can gather before an event. The arena has over 100 points of sale for concession stands and four full-service restau-rants. FedExForum is located one block south of Beale Street. Memphis’ musical roots can be traced to band leader W.C. Handy, who wrote the first blues song here in 1909, a campaign theme for Mem-phis mayor “Boss” Crump called “Boss Crump Blues” and later published as the “The Memphis Blues.” The sound soon caught on and blues bands filled the clubs along Beale. Young musicians who have performed along Beale include Muddy Wa-ters, Furry Lewis, Albert King, Bobby “Blue” Bland and B.B. King. Beale Street has rapidly become the enter-tainment center of Memphis, and visitors and lo-cals alike enjoy the food and music offered in the various nightclubs. Where Beale Street meets the Mississippi River is Tom Lee Park, site of the annual Beale Street Music Festival. The weekend-long event is just a part of the month-long Memphis in May In-ternational Festival, which also includes the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Located within a block of Beale is Gibson Guitar Memphis, which includes factory tours and cultural exhibits. Across the street is the Smith-sonian’s Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum located at the Fe-dExForum, which includes artifacts documenting music’s past. Memphis’ musical roots also include Stax and Hi-Records as well as Sun Records recording studio. Stax became known for “sweet soul mu-

The Stax Museum re-opened on its original location at McLemore and Crump in the summer of 2003 and offers visitors a complete history of “Soulsville USA.” One of Hi-Records’ premier artists was Al Green. Sun Records’ most famous recording artist was Elvis Presley and also boasted Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash among its recording artists. Elvis Presley’s Graceland is one of the five most-visited home tours in America and is the most famous home in the United States after the White House. In 1991, Graceland was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Over 600,000 visitors tour Graceland each year. Also located downtown is the beautiful Orpheum The-ater, which serves as a venue for performances by Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Or-chestra and traveling Broadway shows, as well as the Orpheum Classic Movies series and other concerts. The city’s location makes Memphis a major distribution hub with two interstate highways in-tersecting the city. Memphis is also home of Fe-dEx, the nation’s largest package carrier which makes Memphis International Airport the world’s busiest cargo airport. Over 500 commercial pas-senger flights originate from Memphis Interna-tional each day.

Ranked by The Sporting News as one of the “Top 50 Sports Cities In the Country,” the city of Memphis is a large metropolitan city with a hometown feel. From its big-city industry such as FedEx and the Memphis International Airport to

its family recreation areas such as Shelby Farms and the Memphis Zoo, our city boasts all the amenities you would expect in a city with over 1 million residents, while retaining the charm and down-to-earth feel of a small town.

When the University of Memphis first fielded a football team in the fall of 1912, no one had selected a nickname for the squad. Early references to the football team tabbed them only as the Blue and Gray Warriors of West Tennessee Normal School. After the final game of the 1914 season, there was a student parade. During this event, several Normal students shouted, “We fight like Tigers.” The nickname was born. More and more the nickname “Tigers” was used, particularly in campus publications. But, it did not catch on with the newspapers downtown. They continued to use “Normals” or the “Blue and Gray” when referring to the University. In the late 1920s, student publications and downtown newspapers began referring to the football team as the “Teachers” or “Tutors.” The Tigers nickname would return, but not until 1939 was it finally adopted as the official nickname for the University of Memphis. For nearly 40 years, the sideline mascot for the University of Memphis has been a Bengal Tiger named TOM. TOM attends all Tigers football home games, and he can also be found at many other University events throughout the year. TOM travels in style in a custom-designed, climate-controlled trailer and always with police escort. As one of only two universities in America with a live tiger mascot, The University of Memphis is unique in its Tiger tradition. As a project of the Highland Hundred, no public or University funds are used to provide for TOM’s needs, and no University resources are required in his care. TOM is a powerful and majestic symbol of the University of Memphis, and his presence presents constant opportunities to educate Tigers fans young and old through the preservation of one of

The University of Memphis’ official logo was redesigned by Craig Thompson from Disciple Design in Memphis, Tenn. The original logo was an MSU with a leaping Tiger coming out from behind the letter. The new logo is an “M” with a leaping Tiger coming up over the center of the “M.”

The University of Memphis’ official school colors of Blue and Gray were selected in the early 1900s. The colors were chosen in an effort to show unity in a nation that was still recovering from the effects of the Civil War. The student body thought that by picking the colors of the North and the South, the school would show a togetherness among all students.

the world’s most recognizable endangered species. The first Tiger, TOM, was procured by the Highland Hundred football boosters in 1972 and served the U of M faithfully for nearly 20 years until passing away in February of 1992. The Highland Hundred officially presented TOM to the University in a ceremony at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11, 1972, during a football game against the University of Cincinnati. TOM had initially been named ‘Shane’ at the suggestion of the breeder’s daughter. Once in Memphis, though, a contest was held to name the mascot. More than 2,500 entries were submitted. The list was ultimately reduced to two choices, Shane and TOM, which stands for Tigers Of Memphis. TOM won. In the fall of 1991, the Highland Hundred Tiger Guard received TOM II as a gift from Tom and Carolyn Atchison of Florence, Ala. TOM II served

his university with pride for 17 years through 2008, passing away on Oct. 15 of that year. Shortly after TOM II’s death, the Tiger Guard began the search for a new tiger to serve as TOM III, and a stroke of good luck was realized in a discussion with the Wisconsin Big Cat Rescue & Educational Center in Rock Springs, Wis. Faced with three new cubs born Aug. 31, 2008, after an unexpected pregnancy at their facility, founders Jeff Kozlowski and Jenny Meyer offered to donate one of their young tigers to serve as TOM III. TOM III was introduced at a press conference on Nov. 17, 2008, and the Tiger Guard officially presented him to the University on Nov. 22 during a football game against the UCF.

Paul Goebel was named head coach of the men’s tennis team prior to the 2004-05 season, af-ter spending the previous five seasons as the program’s assis-tant coach. Goebel has overseen great strides in the men’s tennis program, both on the court and in the classroom.

Under Goebel’s guidance, the 2010-11 campaign reached un-precedented success, recording a 16-10 mark. The 16 wins marked the 8th best win-total in the 62-year history of the program. The Tigers finished 3rd in Conference USA, their highest finish since joining the conference, with a 4-3 record.

The Tigers picked up a win over No. 47 Oklahoma State early in the season and closed with wins against conference-foes

UAB and UCF. Memphis earned a national ranking of No. 58 af-ter defeating Tennessee Tech and remained in the rankings for six weeks, reaching as high as No. 53, before dropping out of the rankings on March 8th.

The 2011-12 team assembled by Goebel boasts three players listed in the ATP World Rankings, David O’Leary in singles and Ce-dric De Zutter and Connor Glen-non in doubles. Joe Salisbury in singles and the doubles pairing of David O’Hare and Salisbury open the 2011-12 season ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis As-sociation.

Goebel has coached one of the most decorated Tigers in men’s tennis, Jorge Vazquez, who became the second Memphis Tiger in the program’s history to be named first team All-C-USA in 2008-09. Vazquez joined former-Tiger and current-Lady Tiger head coach Lee Taylor Walker, who was named to the C-USA All-Decade team in 2005. Vazquez peaked at the No. 51 spot in the College Tennis Online rankings during the 2009 season, after earning wins over four players ranked among the Top 125 tennis players in the nation, two of which were Top 50 players. Vazquez finished the sea-son ranked No. 106 in the coun-try.

Former Tiger Amrit Narasim-han is currently playing profes-

sionally on the ATP tour. Nara-simhan was the 2007 C-USA Newcomer of the Year while play-ing for Goebel. He also earned All-C-USA Singles Second Team and C-USA All-Academic Team honors while playing for Mem-phis.

Off of the court, Goebel has continued to yield outstand-ing performances from his team academically. Goebel’s program has earned two C-USA Sport Academic Awards, 2010-11 and 2005-06. The C-USA Sport Aca-demic Award honors each team in a conference-sponsored sport that posts the highest-team GPA. The Tigers have earned ITA All-Academic Team honors in each of Goebel’s last six seasons. In fact, the only season that the Goebel-led Tigers have not received the ITA All-Academic Team award was in 2005, Goebel’s first season as head coach.

Since Goebel assumed the helm of the men’s tennis team, the squad has recorded the high-est-cumulative GPA of all Mem-phis men’s teams every season.

A native of Hendersonville, N.C., Goebel came to Memphis after a stellar career at Middle Tennessee, where he was part of the school’s first All-America doubles team which earned him a place in the MTSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008. Goebel became the second men’s tennis player to be inducted into the Middle Ten-nessee Hall of Fame. A member of the MTSU team from 1990-1994, Goebel served as the team’s cap-tain from 1992-1994 and was a four-time, all-conference player. He was also named the student-athlete of the year in 1994.

Following his collegiate play-ing career, Goebel served as a student assistant coach in 1995 at Middle Tennessee, while also playing professionally. He gradu-ated from MTSU in 1995.

Goebel moved to Memphis and became a tennis professional at The Racquet Club of Memphis beginning in 1996. At The Rac-

Former Tiger tennis player Mark Finnegan will pull double-duty this sea-son as an assistant for both the men’s and women’s tennis teams. This is Finnegan’s fifth year as an assistant for his alma mater, spending the previous three seasons with the men’s team and one year following graduation with the women’s program.

As assistant coach, Finnegan’s main duties are international recruiting, pri-vate lessons for the players and overall development of Memphis’ student-ath-letes.

Finnegan assisted head coach Paul Goebel in putting together a stellar in-ternational recruiting class prior to the 2011 season, and it paid off for the Ti-gers. David O’Hare, a former fourth-ranked Ireland U18 player, was named to C-USA’s Singles Second Team. Mem-phis posted the most wins (16) under Goebel during the 2011 campaign.

In Finnegan’s first year as an assistant coach in 2008, the Tigers finished with a 14-11 mark, which was the best season at that point under Goebel’s guidance. Finnegan helped coached Jorge Vazquez to All-C-USA First Team honors in 2009.

Finnegan graduated from Memphis in 2004 with a degree in finance after playing two seasons following his trans-fer from Georgia Southern. He battled a

shoulder injury his first season for the Tigers, but bounced back to post a 28-21 career singles mark in a Tiger uniform. In doubles, Finnegan posted a 12-6 mark with former Tiger assistant coach Alex Jago.

Prior to his arrival at the U of M as a player, Finnegan had a successful stint at Georgia Southern where he was hon-ored as the Southern Conference Fresh-man of the Year in 2002. Finnegan was also named to the All-Southern Confer-ence team and was the team MVP for Georgia Southern.

After his graduation and stint with the University of Memphis women’s tennis team, Finnegan returned to his native Ireland and worked for the Na-tional Irish Bank. In January of 2007, he returned to the U.S. and went to work as the Program Director at the Cliff Dry-sdale Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Fla. There, Finnegan worked with a high per-formance academy and coached highly ranked juniors in the state of Florida. Finnegan also spent a period of time at the Point Clear Tennis Club with fellow Irish touring pro Joseph O’Dwyer. While at Point Clear, Finnegan coached several players who were highly ranked in the state of Alabama, many of whom com-peted collegiately around the country.

Finnegan married his wife, Molly, in May of 2008. The couple currently re-sides in Memphis.

o’hare earns c-usa all-conFer-ence second TeaM

Freshman David O’Hare be-came just the 11th men’s tennis player in program history to earn all-conference honors. He de-buted for the Tigers at the No. 3 position, but jumped to the No. 1 slot for the Tigers on Feb. 19 and remained there for the rest of the season. His most notable singles win was a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 downing of 49th-ranked and All-C-USA First-Team selection Ar-tem Baradach of SMU on March 6. O’Hare compiled an overall 7-12 singles record for 2011.

Top 50 Takedown

On January 22, 2011, Mem-phis defeated No. 47 Oklahoma State, 5-2. The win propelled the Tigers into the national rankings. The doubles partnerings of Jor-dan Smith/David Henry and Leon Nasemann/John Taylor secured the doubles point for Memphis. In singles competition, Taylor, Henry, Joe Salisbury and Nas-emann all grabbed wins to secure the victory for Memphis.

in The naTional polls

Memphis spent six-consec-utive weeks in the ITA National Rankings following a 5-2 beating of No. 47 Oklahoma State. The Ti-gers entered the poll at No. 58 on January 25th, reached as high as No. 53 for two-straight weeks in February, before falling out of the poll on March 8th.

In the preseason poll re-leased by the ITA on January 4th for the 2011 season, the doubles partnering of Joe Salisbury and David O’Hare were listed among the rankings. The two men were ranked 52nd in the poll.

16 wins is Tops durinG GoeBel’s Tenure

In 2011, the Goebel-led Ti-gers posted a 16-10 season, the most wins under Goebel and the

most since Phil Chamberlain’s squad posted 16 in 2003. Goe-bel’s teams have now notched double-digit wins in each of the last three seasons and four times in his seven years at the helm of the program.

TiGers Finish Third in conFerence usa sTandinGs

Memphis finished 4-3 in Conference USA play, defeating the likes of East Carolina, Tulane, Southern Miss and UAB. The re-cord was good enough for the Tigers to earn a third-place finish to the C-USA regular season. The four wins in conference play are the most during Goebel’s tenure as head coach. Actually, Mem-phis has only posted one season this century with more wins than the Tigers recorded in 2011, six in 2002. Memphis has had only four seasons (1996, 2002, 2005 and 2011) with a won-loss percent-age in conference play greater than .500 since joining C-USA in 1996.

c-usa chaMpionship

In 2011, Memphis defeated UCF, 4-1, in its opening round match of the Conference USA Championship. This was the sec-ond-straight year in which the Tigers opened play in the tourna-ment winning their first match.

Five wins in a row

For the first time since a six-match win-streak in 2005, Memphis was victorious in five-consecutive duals in 2011. The team defeated Murray State (7-0), North Alabama (7-0), Rhodes College (7-0), The Citadel (6-1) and East Carolina (4-3) during the run.

iTa all-acadeMic TeaM

Memphis continued its ex-cellence in the classroom, earn-ing its sixth-straight ITA All-Aca-demic Team Award. The Tigers have won the award, which is

given to teams that carry a team-GPA above 3.20, nine of the last 10 seasons.

conFerence usa sporT acadeMic award

Every year, Conference USA honors each team in a confer-ence-sponsored sport that posts the highest-team GPA. With a cumulative-team GPA of 3.519, the Memphis men’s tennis team earned the honor in 2011. Mem-phis has won the award only one other time in program history, the 2005-06 season.

Cedric De Zutter, K.C. Griffin and Joe Salisbury were all three named Conference USA Aca-demic Medalists. This marked the third-consecutive year that Grif-fin has been named a C-USA Aca-demic Medalist. De Zutter and Salisbury are first time recipients.
