Our May meeting was well attended, with the

following items being addressed. There will be a meeting sometime in June with a Fife Council legal expert and all the landowners of areas bordering Quarry Road to find a way forward for

the future. This may involve gating, restricting access or closing the road to through traffic. The road is already starting to break up again despite recent patching.

Parking around Balmullo School. Yellow lines will all be re-painted, including new double lines at the street junctions in due course. The police are carrying out a survey to establish which

areas require lines and we will be updated when a decision has been made. Further work has been done on the new website by Mike Withers. Photos, including some of old

Balmullo, will be added in due course. Road Closure – the B946 road between Tayport Cemetery and the access road to the Tay Bridge will be closed completely for resurfacing for up

to 5 weeks starting in July. This will require significant diversions for Tayport residents and bus services. Traffic lights may be installed at St Michaels to help traffic flow.

An enforcement order has been issued for 13 School Road. This is basically because of untidy land, but possibly also dealing with the unsafe nature of the building.

Pharmacy Application. There is no further news

yet following formal submission of the

application. Primary 2 are taking part in a project to learn more about the history of Balmullo. One aspect involves siting small plastic cards around the

village, including at the shop and on flower tubs at the roundabout. These have a barcode which can be scanned by a smartphone, thus accessing articles and photos.

Olympic Torch Relay. The relay will take place locally on 12th June, starting at Cupar from 16.55pm, Dairsie from 17.20pm, Guardbridge from 17.28pm and Leuchars from 17.53pm en

route to Dundee. The next leg will start from St Andrews on 13th June from 7.00am. We have been asked that Balmullo take part in the Beautiful Fife Scheme again this year and

judging is likely to be in late July.

Our next meeting is Monday 11th June at 7.30pm in Burnside Hall. This is the last one ‘till 10th September.

We did not manage to put up the tennis net last year as part of it seemed to be missing. We now

appear to have the complete set up and will arrange for it to be put in the park after the Gala.

Next month will be the last newsletter ‘till we start again in September so keep a note of the

SENIOR CITIZENS TRIP Joan Auld

This years Senior Citizens Trip is on the 1st June, and there are still a few seats on the bus. We

may have missed some people. If you would like to come let me know at 870013 [Joan}. The tickets are £8.00 for Balmullo residents and £13.00 for visitors. The bus leaves at 10.30am in

the pub car park. We are hoping for a lovely day. The trip is going to Glen Esk.

At the Club's evening talk on 12th April, Graeme Butler of the Rumbling Bridge Nursery,

enlightened, encouraged and entertained the audience throughout. Illustrated with examples from his own vast collection of first-class plant photographs, he explained the selection, siting and cultivation of a range of plants for shady and sunny positions in gardens, based on his own long experience. Importantly, he rightly suggested choosing plants for the site rather than the expense

in cash and effort of altering the site greatly to suit the choice of plants, if possible. Using what you've got seemed to be his gardening philosophy. His experience of plant exploration in the mountains of Scotland and mainland Europe also influenced his style of gardening which is particularly suited to those with limited space and time. During the evening he quietly dispelled

the myth that all alpine plants are difficult to grow: imitating the natural growing conditions of plants - whether it be the need for sun or shade, dry or damp, boggy or well-drained - is the key. Adding to pleasure of the evening, Graeme brought a selection of very well grown plants for sale.

Alison Jeffrey expressed the gratitude of the members for Graeme's first class talk.

The Gardening Club were hoping to hold a coffee morning in Balmullo Hall on Saturday 2nd June. Due to the committee members having other commitments, and similar activities taking place in

the area on this, the Jubilee weekend, we decided not to go ahead with it at the moment.

LEUCHARS & DISTRICT GARDENING AND CRAFTS CLUB Leslie Bisset

Leuchars Community Council are holding a Jubilee Party in Leuchars park. It is on Tuesday 5th

June and starts at 2pm (till 8pm). They have issued an invite to anyone who wishes to go along and join in the fun.

QUEENS JUBILEE PARTY Leuchars Community Council

The nation’s sporting attentions may now be switching to London’s summer Olympics but

preparations are well underway for next season’s curling with leagues being entered, ice being

applied for and friendly games agreed.

Forret which was established in 1895 has its pond behind Logie village on Forret hill. The club caters for all from the beginner to the more seasoned and from the less competitive to the very. Games are normally staged at either Kinross or Perth with the season running from late

September to early April.

Club membership currently sits at 37 but the club has aspirations to grow, and it’s for that

reason the club has agreed for the forthcoming season to waive a membership fee for new recruits as well as offer some discounted games. To register interest, please contact our Secretary on

01334 828248 or alternatively visit our Balmullo Gala Day stand on the 9th June.

BURNSIDE HALL AGM - 6th JUNE @ 7.30pm Keith Parker

President Mrs. Ann Falconer welcomed members to the meeting on Thursday 3rd May in the

unusual setting of the lounge bar at Balmullo Inn.

Our speaker for the evening was Anna Dickenson, who gave an illustrated and very interesting

talk on the work of Mercy Ships. Anna was the representative from Dundee area selected to go and see the work being done in Sierra Leone and Benin. The ships are fully equipped hospitals, which anchor for around 9 months and treat local people, most commonly for facial and sight problems. There is also an education programme teaching about basic farming methods and crop production

in difficult conditions. Anna’s enthusiasm and dedication for this work was obvious to all and many questions were asked as our members were keen to know more. Mrs Grace Steven gave a vote of thanks to Anna for her excellent presentation and also thanked the staff at Balmullo Inn

for their excellent welcome and hospitality.
