2012 season outlook

Roster turnover is a fact of life in college sports. never has that been more evident than with the 2012 Manhattan College softball team, which will feature new faces at nearly every position after the graduation of last year’s eight-member senior class. only three starters from last season’s 25-23 squad return in 2012.

Perhaps because of that roster overhaul, the Jaspers were picked seventh in the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Preseason Poll. however, head Coach tom Pardalis believes his young and talented squad is well-equipped to exceed those expectations and make a return trip to the MaaC tournament.

“the preseason ranking doesn’t bother me,” he said. “that’s based on what we lost, not the talent still here. We brought in some good people, and there were good people already here. these players are motivated by the opportunity and still just as hungry. We’re going to surprise some people.”

Pitchersthree-quarters of Manhattan’s 2011

pitching staff was lost to graduation. the only returning member of that staff

is sophomore kate Bowen, who made 13 appearances in the circle last season. Despite pitching only 43 innings, bowen posted a 3-1 record, including a brilliant three-hit shutout against lafayette on March 20, and picked up a save in 2011. also one of the team’s best hitters, bowen will be used more frequently in the circle this season, and she spent the summer working on her arsenal of pitches.

“Kate was recruited mainly to play second base and hit, but she worked on her pitching in the offseason, and I have high expectations for her,” Pardalis said. “It helps that she pitched a little bit last year. she has a different mentality on the mound now.”

like bowen, freshman amy Bright is expected to see a lot of innings in the circle. she was a two-time all-Central new York pick at fayetteville-Manlius high school in syracuse, where she posted a 1.15 eRa as a senior. bright also hit .396 last season, and will likely find her way into the lineup on the days she isn’t pitching.

“amy loves to pitch,” Pardalis said. “she’s aggressive and she’ll challenge hitters. she has all the qualities you want in a pitcher.”

Joining them on the pitching staff is junior-college transfer kelsi redding. Redding spent the last two years at scottsdale Community College in arizona, where she recorded 69 strikeouts in just 77.2 innings last season. she also set scottsdale’s program record with 13 strikeouts in one game in 2010.

“Kelsi was brought in because I wanted somebody with experience,” Pardalis said. “she’s pitched on the college level for the last two years, and can really help stabilize a young staff.”

the fourth member of the Manhattan pitching staff—freshman mickalya romero gives the Jaspers a weapon they haven’t had in a few years: a bona fide reliever. Romero, a four-time all-league selection at Valley high school in las Vegas, will pitch exclusively out of the bullpen and has that “get you out” mentality.

catchersthe one position on the roster that

remained a constant is perhaps the most important position on the field: catcher. senior captain carla Velasquez is the incumbent starter. she started 33 games last season and hit .244. In addition to her powerful bat, Velasquez is a rock behind the plate, and she has a very good softball IQ.

“Carla is our leader,” Pardalis said. “she really understands the game and the pitchers love to throw to her. she really runs the show out there. I also think she’s primed for a big year offensively. Carla has prepared herself for a big senior year.”

Junior meghan mcDevitt also figures to see a lot of playing time, either behind the plate or at designated player. McDevitt, who provided a number of key hits for the Jaspers last season, has come a long way offensively and is one of the team’s top power hitters. If she’s hitting consistently, it’ll be tough for Pardalis to keep McDevitt out of the lineup.

inFielDfreshman sydney Weedon is the

leading candidate to step in as the starter at first base. the santa ana, Calif., native was a four-year varsity starter at foothill high school, and she played travel ball with strike force gold, one of the top club teams in California. an excellent power hitter, Weedon’s bat will be a welcome addition to the middle of the lineup. she’s also very solid defensively.

however, Weedon faces some stiff competition for the starting spot. McDevitt and Romero are both in the mix, as is junior heather leone. McDevitt is a dangerous offensive threat, while Romero boasts a solid all-around game, both offensively and defensively. leone brings a lot to the program, and she can be used at catcher and in the outfield, as well as first base.

When she’s not pitching, bowen will be the Jaspers’ everyday second baseman. as a freshman, she led the team with a .336 average, 40 hits and 25 RbIs while hitting mostly towards the bottom of the order. Pardalis expects those numbers to go up as bowen moves into the two-hole this year. on the days bowen is in the circle, freshman amanda Paxson figures to get the call at second base. Paxson was a four-year starter and four-year all-conference player at Mount st. Dominic academy in new Jersey.

“I think we have one of the best hitters in the MaaC in Kate bowen,” Pardalis said. “amanda Paxson is very capable defensively, and she can become a very good hitter in this league. all she needs is time and experience.”

Junior amanda Babcock emerged as a regular in the lineup late in the 2011 season, splitting time between second base and shortstop. this season, babcock will play shortstop exclusively. In addition to her solid defense, she can hit anywhere in the lineup, and Pardalis expects her power numbers to go up now that she’ll be playing regularly.

“amanda is very consistent,” Pardalis said. “During the fall, she really stepped up as a leader and the captain of our infield. she just keeps getting better.”

after waiting in the wings for three years, senior Kelly Murray gets her

chance to be the Jaspers’ everyday third baseman in 2012. Murray has had some big hits during her Manhattan career, and she drove in eight runs in limited time last season. Romero should also see some playing time at the hot corner.

“Kelly has the edge because of her experience. I’m counting on her to have a big year with the bat,” Pardalis said. “Mickayla is very versatile and has tremendous passion. she wants to play. It doesn’t matter where.”

outFielDJunior captain Jen keller, the Jaspers’

starting right fielder in each of the last two seasons, makes the move to center in 2012. Keller has started 82 of 91 career appearances in a Manhattan uniform, and last year she hit a career-high .258 with six doubles, two home runs and 14 RbIs. a very good defensive outfielder, Keller possesses a strong arm and has the speed to cover the gaps.

In right field, junior Jocelin Whitmore, a converted infielder, is penciled in as the opening Day starter. one of the most versatile players on the team, Whitmore, who’s also listed as the backup shortstop on the preseason depth chart, has seen action at five different positions during her first two years in Riverdale. In addition, she has tremendous discipline at the plate. Whitmore doesn’t give away any at-bats and can be a real table-setter. Pardalis expects to bat her in the leadoff position.

“Jocelin brings an infielder’s mentality, and she’s very aggressive,” Pardalis said. “she had a great fall and has had a great spring so far. I’m expecting big things out of Jocelin this season.”

the biggest competition in the outfield is in left, where senior amanda Berrios and junior anna gallacher will battle for the starting spot. both players are greatly improved and ready to step into the everyday lineup after seeing limited time last season. one of the fastest players on the roster, berrios has the range to also play center. always a strong defender, she worked hard on her offensive game during the offseason. gallacher also has a good glove, and she has the potential to be a major contributor offensively. bright and Romero may see some time in the outfield, as well.

scheDulethe Jaspers begin the season with their

traditional trip to Kissimmee, fla., for the Rebel spring games. Manhattan plays a challenging 10-game schedule in the sunshine state before participating in the seton hall Pirate Classic for the second straight year. the Jaspers will face quality opponents in both events, with Cleveland state, green bay, texas tech, seton hall and Youngstown state included on the early-season slate.

“In florida, we’ll face a good mix of competition,” Pardalis said. “there will be a couple of tests, and we’re playing some good teams. I think it’s important to play against tough competition, though. that definitely helped us when we got back last year.”

Manhattan opens its MaaC schedule at Rider on March 31, with the home opener scheduled for april 5 against stony brook at gaelic Park. the Jaspers’ home MaaC slate includes doubleheaders with Canisius (april 21) and niagara (april 28), as well as two-time defending MaaC champion Iona (april 22). Manhattan hosts fairfield for a senior Day doubleheader on May 5 before ending the regular season the following day at saint Peter’s.

the top four teams in the final standings will advance to the MaaC Championships, which will be held in Poughkeepsie, n.Y., from May 10-13. Manhattan has advanced to the MaaC Championships in each of the last three seasons.

tom PardalisHead Coach (Saint Leo ’72) • 3rd Season/50-46-1

tom Pardalis enters his third season as Manhattan’s head softball coach. he has posted a winning record and led Manhattan to the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) tournament during each of his two seasons at the helm.

During his initial campaign in 2010, Pardalis led the Jaspers to a 25-23-1 record and their second straight MaaC tournament appearance. the 25 wins were Manhattan’s highest total since 2006, which also marked the last time the Jaspers had finished above .500 prior to his arrival. In 2011, Manhattan finished above .500 again, going 25-23. the Jaspers defeated every team in the MaaC during the regular season, posting a school-record 12 conference wins en route to the no. 2 seed in the MaaC tournament. It was Manhattan’s third straight postseason appearance, matching the feat of the 2004-06 squads.

eight Manhattan players have been named all-MaaC in Pardalis’ two seasons, including two-time first team all-MaaC choice Jaci Rahey. Rahey also earned a first team all-northeast Region selection in 2010. In addition, his student-athletes have found success in the classroom, earning a total of 19 MaaC all-academic selections.

a 39-year coaching veteran, Pardalis came to Manhattan after six seasons an assistant at Western

Connecticut state University. he helped the Colonials win the 2007 eCaC Championship and advance to the nCaa tournament in 2008. also in 2008, he coached the little east Conference Pitcher of the Year and four all-conference players.

Prior to his time at Western Connecticut state, Pardalis was an assistant coach at MaaC rival Marist for three seasons. he worked with the Red foxes’ hitters and outfielders, while also handling duties in recruiting, film work and scheduling. In 2006, Marist posted a 33-13 overall record en route to the MaaC Championship and an nCaa tournament appearance. that season, the Red foxes ranked eighth nationally in home runs per game, belting 47 in 46 contests. Marist also ranked 19th nationally in slugging percentage (.458) and 21st in earned run average (2.52) in 2006. four Red foxes earned all-MaaC honors that season, including both the MaaC Player of the Year and MaaC Pitcher of the Year.

from 1992-2001, Pardalis was the head coach of the varsity softball team at new fairfield high school in new fairfield, Conn. new fairfield won the 1999 Connecticut state Championship and produced six Division I softball players. Pardalis led the Rebels to four straight division championships (1993-96) and twice earned conference Coach of the Year honors (1994-95).

he also guided three different club teams to the PonY nationals. In 1997, he led the Connecticut legacy to the state championship and a fifth-place finish at the PonY nationals in the under-14 division. he also led the under-16 Connecticut Crush to nationals in 1998, and the under-18 Connecticut tradition to the 1999 PonY nationals.

Pardalis spent 37 years teaching physical education and coaching in the Connecticut Public school system before retiring following the 2008-09 school year. he has also coached football, basketball and baseball during his career, and he was the varsity boy’s basketball coach at Danbury high school from 1996-2009. Pardalis spent time as an assistant men’s basketball coach at Western Connecticut state from 1992-96, helping the Colonials win the 1995 eCaC Championship and qualify for the 1996 nCaa tournament.

a 1972 graduate of saint leo College, Pardalis earned a master’s degree from Western Connecticut state in 1978 and a degree in administration from sacred heart in 2002. he and his wife, Rosemary, have two children and two grandchildren.

Bridget hurlmanAssistant Coach (Marist ‘06) • 3rd Season

bridget hurlman enters her third season as an assistant coach for the Jaspers. she is also the assistant coach for the Manhattan volleyball team. a two-time all-MaaC selection at Marist, hurlman served as team captain when the Red foxes won the MaaC Championship and advanced to the nCaa tournament in 2006.

hurlman earned second team all-MaaC honors following both the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. In 2005, she started every game at either catcher or designated player and posted a .331 batting average. hurlman also led the Red foxes with seven home runs, 33 RbIs and a .569 slugging percentage that season. as a senior in 2006, hurlman drew a team-high 22 walks and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. she also earned a place on the MaaC all-tournament team, as the Red foxes won their first-ever MaaC Championship.

she began her coaching career as an assistant at sUnY Purchase in 2007. During her time at sUnY Purchase, she worked primarily with the pitchers and catchers, while assisting with offensive instruction. hurlman was also involved in all other aspects of the program, including practice planning, budgeting, travel arrangements and recruiting.

also a certified athletic trainer, hurlman is a member of the national athletic trainers’ association. from september-December 2006, she worked as an athletic trainer at Walt Disney’s Wide World of sports Complex, where she provided medical care to athletes of all ages in a variety of sports. from august 2007-May 2009, she served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at st. John’s University, where she worked primarily with the women’s cross country and track and field teams,

as well as the men’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer squads. hurlman is currently employed at the frozen Ropes baseball/softball training facility in elmsford, n.Y., where she is an instructor and assists with administrative duties.

a three-time MaaC all-academic selection, hurlman graduated cum laude from Marist in 2006. she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in sports management from st. John’s.

the daughter of Margaret and James hurlman, she currently resides in Yonkers, n.Y.

2009: Played in 40 games, making 37 starts in the outfield…tallied first collegiate hit and later came around to score in the season-opening win at Maryland on March 7…scored Manhattan’s only run in a 2-1 loss to Cornell at the Rebel spring games on March 18…notched first career RbI in the second game of a doubleheader at Monmouth on april 8.

With 10 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro atlantic athletic Conference is in its 31st year of competition during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC was founded in 1980 by six charter members: the U.s. Military academy, fairfield University, fordham University, Iona College, Manhattan College and saint Peter’s College. Competition followed one year later in the fall of 1981 with members competing in the sports of men’s cross country and men’s soccer. on January 2, 1982, army traveled to Iona for the first MaaC men’s basketball game and the MaaC story had begun.

today, Conference members include: Canisius College, fairfield University, Iona College, loyola University Maryland, Manhattan College, Marist College, niagara University, Rider University, saint Peter’s College, and siena College. In addition, associate members include the University of Detroit Mercy, Jacksonville University and Virginia Military Institute in men’s lacrosse. st. francis (n.Y.) College, Villanova University, VMI and Wagner College are all associate members of the MaaC Women’s Water Polo league. Drake University, Robert Morris University and sacred heart University compete in women’s rowing, while the University at albany, boston University and the University of hartford began competition in women’s golf in the spring of 2010. the MaaC will support 24 sports and championships during the 2011-2012 academic year.

the MaaC basketball Championships move to springfield’s MassMutual Center to host the 2012-2014 championships. by having an excellent working relationship with various facilities, the MaaC has been able to attract a number of nCaa Championship events. Most recently, the MaaC and Rider co-hosted the 2011 nCaa Division I Wrestling Championships at the Wells fargo Center in Philadelphia. the MaaC, Canisius College and niagara University successfully hosted the 2010 nCaa Division I Men’s basketball Championship first and second Rounds at the hsbC arena in buffalo, new York. all three parties hosted the event in 2004 and 2007. the MaaC and Rider University co-hosted the 2009 nCaa Division I Women’s basketball Championship Regional at the sovereign bank arena in trenton, n.J., after recording the third highest attendance figure for the women’s championship with the first and second Rounds in 2006. the MaaC and Rider will work together to co-host the 2012 nCaa Rowing Championships at Mercer lake in West Windsor, new Jersey.

maac associate sPortsIn June of 1995, the MaaC continued to develop opportunities for student-

athletes as the conference announced the formation of the MaaC Men’s and Women’s lacrosse leagues. the men’s league began competition in the spring of 1996, while the women’s league commenced in the spring of 1997. the men’s league consists of four MaaC schools -- Canisius, Manhattan, Marist, and siena – and three associate members – Detroit, Jacksonville and Virginia Military Institute. the women’s league consists of MaaC institutions Canisius, fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, niagara and siena.

In 2002, the MaaC added the MaaC Women’s Water Polo league. the league is currently made up of three MaaC schools – Iona, Marist and siena – as well as four associate members, st. francis (n.Y.), Villanova, VMI and Wagner.

sacred heart started participating in MaaC Women’s Rowing in the spring of 2008. Drake University joined the league for the 2010 MaaC Championship, while Robert Morris began competition in the spring of 2011.

In the summer of 2009, the MaaC added three associate members – albany, boston University and hartford – to women’s golf, with the programs starting competition against MaaC members fairfield, niagara and siena in 2009-2010.

acaDemics anD athletics

the MaaC prides itself on the accomplishments of its student-athletes in the classroom, as well as on the field. Mary beth Riley, a 1991 graduate of Canisius, was the first recipient of the nCaa Woman of the Year award. In the fall of 1998, erin Whalen, a member of the Iona women’s rowing team, was awarded one of the nation’s 32 Rhodes scholarships for academic achievement and civic leadership. Jose Vargas, a loyola student, was also awarded a Rhodes scholarship in 1999.

first-class facilities are the rule with MaaC schools, as teams regularly play in top-notch arenas,

such as Madison square garden, the IZoD Center, hsbC arena, times Union Center, the arena at harbor Yard and the sun national bank Center. the other MaaC championships boast their share of outstanding locales as well, such as the Reverend harold Ridley, s.J., athletic Complex at loyola, where the women’s soccer championship will be contested in the fall of 2011, and Joe bruno stadium in troy, new York, home of the 2012 MaaC baseball Championship. this year, the MaaC will take its men’s championship to orlando, florida, where it will conduct its post-season event at the esPn Wide World of sports Complex. the MaaC Men’s and Women’s golf Championships will be held at Disney’s Magnolia golf Course.

In the past several years, a number of the MaaC schools have also enjoyed success in nCaa Championships. MaaC schools have made a total of 77 nIt appearances and 47 nCaa appearances. In addition, Iona and Rider participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament, with the gaels advancing to the championship game. the Manhattan women participated in the Women’s basketball Invitational, reaching the semifinal round of the tournament. the MaaC currently possesses 13 automatic bids to nCaa Championships in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, and women’s water polo. In 2007, the Marist women’s basketball team advanced to the sweet 16 before falling to the eventual national Champion, the University of tennessee. In the fall of 2009, the no. 11 Iona men’s cross country team finished tied for eighth place at the nCaa Championship race, extended the gaels’ streak to eight straight top 10 national finishes. Iona softball, Manhattan track, Manhattan baseball and loyola lacrosse have also flourished on the national stage.

the MaaC has also been a leader in the forefront of technology, expanding the notoriety of the league into cyberspace. In 2007, the league reached an agreement with JumptV, Inc., now neulion, Inc., to design the MaaC web page. MaaCsports.com has been a great success, providing fans with up-to-date contest results, live and on-demand video and an online merchandise store. the MaaC, in conjunction with neulion, launched an iPhone app in february 2011. the league is looking to expand its offerings with android and iPod apps, scheduled for release during the 2011-12 academic year.

the MaaC President for the 2011-2012 academic year is Rev. Jeffrey von arx, s.J., the President of fairfield University. the Vice-President is Dr. eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., the President of saint Peter’s College. Jim Paquette, Director of athletics at loyola University Maryland, will chair the Committee on athletic administration, and theresa berg, associate athletic Director/senior Woman administrator at niagara University will serve as Vice Chair.

Dr. brennan o’Donnell is the 19th president of Manhat-tan College, having assumed the responsibilities of the position July 1, 2009.

Dr. o’Donnell comes to Manhattan from fordham Col-lege at Rose hill, fordham University’s oldest and larg-est school. as dean of fordham College, he was the chief academic officer of a College of arts and sciences enrolling about 3,200 students under a faculty of more than 200.

before coming to new York, Dr. o’Donnell spent 17 years at loyola College in Maryland (now loyola University Mary-land), where he served as a professor of english and, from 1999-2004, as director of the university-wide honors Pro-gram. an active scholar, his teaching and research interests focus mainly upon poetry, especially of the british Romantic period, and on religion and literature, particularly contem-porary american Catholic writers. he has authored two books on the poetry of William Wordsworth and co-edited the Work of andre Dubus, a collection of essays published as a double issue of Religion and the arts. In addition, Dr. o’Donnell has published articles, essays and reviews in some of the leading journals in his field. at Manhattan, he will continue to hold a faculty appointment, as he had at fordham and loyola, as professor of english.

as the first president of the College not to be a member of the brothers of the Christian schools, Dr. o’Donnell is treading new ground at Manhattan College. he has experi-ence in such transitions, however, as he was also the first layperson to serve as dean of fordham College at Rose hill.

his publications and lectures demonstrate a keen engage-ment in issues of faith and education, specifically Catholic higher education. from 1994–2000, he served as editor of the national magazine Conversations on Jesuit higher education, and he was a member of the national seminar on Jesuit higher education from 1993–2000. In addition, he has served as a board member for the lilly fellows Program and for Collegium, a consortium of Catholic universities that strives to strengthen faculty understanding of and participa-tion in the mission of Catholic higher education.

a native of Pennsylvania’s Wyoming Valley, Dr. o’Donnell earned his b.a. with highest distinction and honors in english at the Pennsylvania state University in 1981, where he was inducted into Phi beta Kappa. he earned an M.a. and a Ph.D. at the University of north Carolina at Chapel hill in english and american literature and language. he is the recipient of numerous fellowships, grants, awards and honors.

Dr. o’Donnell is married to angela o’Donnell (formerly alaimo), a poet and writer who teaches at fordham, where she serves as associate director of the francis and ann Cur-ran Center for american Catholic studies. the couple has three sons: Charles (a graduate of saint John’s University, Minnesota, and a teacher in the st. Paul, Minnesota, public schools), Patrick (a 2009 graduate of Columbia Univer-sity, currently pursuing graduate studies in philosophy in leuven, belgium), and Will (a senior english major at fordham).


a 1968 graduate of Manhattan College, byrnes en-ters his 24th year as director of athletics.

since his arrival back to Riverdale in May of 1988, byrnes has presided over a renaissance period in Manhattan College athletics. During his tenure, the men’s and women’s basketball programs have earned eight nCaa tournament bids (four women, four men). additionally, the Jaspers have appeared in five postseason and preseason national Invitational tournaments (nIt). Women’s soccer and men’s and women’s lacrosse began competition at the Division I level under byrnes, and 14 different teams have won conference championships-men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s indoor track, men’s and women’s outdoor track, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s tennis, softball and baseball. In addition, to date, 26 student-athletes have received all-america honors for both athletic and academic achievements.

before returning to Manhattan, byrnes spent 13 years with the Morrison-Knudsen Company, one of the largest engineering and construction firms in the nation.

a native of garrison, new York, byrnes earned his undergraduate degree in physical education with a minor in biology. he also holds an M.b.a. from City University in seattle, Washington.

as an undergraduate, byrnes was a member of the Jaspers’ club football team. byrnes served as team captain and played both defensive tackle and offensive

end. he spent one season as an assistant coach and helped guide Manhattan to a 6-2 overall record in 1969.

Upon graduation, byrnes began a teaching and coaching career at Queen of Peace high school in north arlington, new Jersey. he also served as the school’s director of athletics from 1970-73. Under his leadership, Queen of Peace registered state tourna-ment appearances in baseball and basketball, while also capturing the Parochial “b” state Championship in football (1972).

In addition to his responsibilities at Manhattan, by-rnes served two stints (1997-99, 2004-06) as president of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate basketball associa-tion, at one time the sponsoring body of the nIt. he also served on the nCaa Championship Committee in 1999-2000. he is currently the chair of the Metro atlantic athletic Conference (MaaC) Men’s basketball Committee and the Committee on athletic admin-istration, as well as a member of the eCaC officials negotiating Committee. In recognition of his years of outstanding contributions to Jasper athletics, byrnes was inducted into the Manhattan College athletic hall of fame in 2004.

byrnes resides in Croton-on-hudson, new York, along with his wife, Rosemary. he is the father of five children: bob, Carolyn (Manhattan ’97), brian (Man-hattan ’99), Darren and brigid.
