Revelation is one of the most maligned and misunderstood books in the Bible.

Martin Luther, the hero of the sixteenth-century Protestant Reformation, refused to preach from it and barely acknowledged it as part of the Bible. He claimed, “Christ is neither taught or recognized in it.” Some Christians are reluctant to read it for fear they won’t understand it—or fear they will.

Most contemporary congregations do not want to hear about Revelation. Many pastors are reticent to preach about it, and they do not want anyone else to discuss the book from their pulpits. As I have traveled across the United States in recent years, I have been shocked at the number of pastors who say things such as, “Jim, you can preach anything you feel led to preach here in our church, but please, please don’t preach about the book of Revelation. You will scare our people.”

the music, the smells, everything about the season.

On January 2, 2013, my birthday, my new book Time Has Come will be released.I feel it is the most important book I have ever written. Teachings from the book can be found throughout these pages. When I was in prison, I spent untold hours in the Bible, especially in two areas: the words of Christ and the book of Revelation.

Many, many Christians believe that the Church will escape the perils detailed in the book of Revelation. I’d like to believe they are right— but I can’t. And because I believe that the Church—including here in America—will go through a time on earth of suffering, hunger, violence and persecution, we must be ready. More than that, we must help prepare our loved ones.

When the prophecies of Revelation begin to happen, there will be little time to prepare, because cataclys-mic events will happen so rapidly the world will still be reeling from one calamity when the next will hit. Revelation opens with the announcement that the things God has shown John will “shortly come to pass” (1:1) and warns “the time is near at hand (1:3).”

It will also be wise to stockpile other basic necessities. Use them and replenish your supply every so often so you can keep things fresh, but always keep enough for a long-term problem. Remember how Joseph prepared when God instructed him to be ready for difficult times ahead. In Revelation 8, the sounding of the seven trumpets is like a declaration of war as well as an announcement that God is ready to judge His enemies.

The first four trumpets have to do with events that are going to affect the natural world. From America to Australia, from the Arctic to the Antarctic, the earth will experience an ecological upheaval that will make toxic waste dumps seem like playgrounds. The first trumpet affects the land (verse 7). Hail and fire are mixed with blood and hurled out of the sky, resulting in one-third of the earth being burned. One-third of

everything green will be gone. Next one-third of the sea, the saltwater bodies and one-third of all sea life will be destroyed (verse 8). This could be caused by a volcano or an asteroid or meteor strike, as the second angel sounds his trumpet and “something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood, and a third of the crea-tures which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed” (verses 8–9).

Imagine yourself on a cruise ship, a naval vessel, or a cargo ship, and suddenly the sea turns blood red and one-third of all the ships in the world are destroyed.

of the scariest, foulest things I have ever seen or smelled. Thankfully, it lasted only a short time. But imagine Waikiki Beach, South Beach, the French Riviera, and every other famous beach suddenly plagued by waters turning into blood. The putrid smell alone will be stifling.

In Revelation 18:8, John’s vision takes a frightening and fascinating turn.

Certainly, Jesus warned us against trying to set a date for His return, and those Christians who have ignored His admonition have been sorely embarrassed. On the other hand, Jesus encouraged us to read the signs of the times and to be ready: “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. . . . For this reason you also must be ready;

for the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will” (Matthew 24:42, 44).

In addition to the re-establishment of Israel as a nation, John Shorey lists six major events that must take place before Jesus returns, starting with:

1. The Antichrist must be revealed.

2. There must be a falling away of many Christians from the faith.

John bases the necessity for these two events on the insight given by the apostle Paul to the Thessalonians, who were concerned by rumors that the Lord had already come.

The Scripture is replete with references to the darkening of the sun and moon, yet most Christians have never heard these mentioned in a sermon.

It is hard to miss the explicit statement of Jesus, quoting the prophet Isaiah: “Soon after the trouble of those days, ‘the sun will grow dark, and the moon will
