HERSHEY--The Lancaster Catholic Crusaders 1982 football team

made District three history Saturday at Hershey Stadium when they came

from behind to defeat York Suburban 23-22 in the rst Double A playoff

    championship ever held.

Catholic defeated Suburban, before an estimated crowd of 4,000, on

the eld and on the sidelines. On the sidelines, Catholic coach Joe Mack

got some help from three linemen --Craig Rohrbaugh, Kevin Brocke and Jim

Miklos --who talked him out of a eld goal and into a touchdown.

    Heres the situation.

York Suburban is leading, 16-15, with 2:57 left in the gae. Catholic has

fourth and goal from the one-halg yard line. Mack calls timeout and huddles

with his players. He is thinking eld goal.

But Rohrbaugh, Brocke and Miklos, who make up the right side of the

Crusaders offensive line were thinking touchdown. they told their coach theycould handle the blocking assignment for the nal half yard.

They convinced me, said Mack. I had total codence in them. The kids

felt they could get the touchdown so that was it. We went for it.

    Humble predictions IntelligencerJournal/LancasterNewErastafferstakeashotatpredictingtheL-LLeaguessectionraces.

Weve channeled our inner Jim-my the Greek.

Weve consulted Madame Zel-das crystal ball.

Weve searched the skies for ce-lestial shenanigans.

And having done so, we present, for your amusement and bemuse-ment, our annual preseason predic-tions.

Are we condent in our picks?Thats a clown question, bro.In light of successes in recent

years, we are fearless in forecast-ing Wilson, Manheim Central andDonegal as projected section cham-pions. Of the three, the Bulldogs ap-pear to be the closest thing to a surething. (Sorry to put your squad onthe spot, Doug Dahms).

Wilson has strong-armed SectionOne for years now, and even thoughreigning state Class AA championLancaster Catholic (more on themlater) has taken up residence in theLancaster-Lebanon Leagues high-rent district, we expect the Dawgsto have their day, and their way, once again.

Not exactly going out on a limbwith that one, considering Wilson

outplayed eventual state champCentral Dauphin in the district

playoffs before bowing out. Yes, theDawgs graduated three key play-makers in QB Seth Klein, RB Rod-ney Gillin and WR Jacob Morgan, but a review of Wilsons footballhistory reveals that in West Lawn, they reload, they dont rebuild.

The real race in Section Onemay be for second place. Tough tosay how Lancaster Catholic willfare playing Quad-A programs ona weekly basis. The Crusaders havehandled Section One opponents inrecent years, going undefeated inmultiple meetings with McCaskey,Hempeld and Ephrata.

But Catholics numbers aredown, and head coach Bruce Har-bach has voiced his concerns aboutthe Crusaders depth as the seasonwears on and each week brings awar of attrition. Still, Catholic, PennManor and Manheim Township areall candidates to challenge Wilsonsdominance, and Hempeld and Mc-Caskey could make a push for theplayoffs.

The picture is a bit more mud-dled in Section Two. Manheim Cen-

tral is the favorite, but we wonttear up our tarot cards if two-time

defending champ Lampeter-Stras-burg or resurgent Cocalico makes arun at the top spot.

Conestoga Valley and Lebanonwill have their moments as well, but in vastly different ways. TheBuckskins rely on running backAnthony Brown and a ground-and-pound offense; the Cedars like togo airborne on the wing of heraldedQB Mark Pyles, the triggerman intheir celebrated Air Raid attack.

Lancaster Catholics move toSection One creates a power vac-uum in Section Three, and it sayshere Donegal will ll the void. Gar-den Spot, a contender in SectionTwo last season, is expected to ownthat same role in Section Three.Defending District Three Class Aking Columbia knows what it takesto win, and at Annville-Cleona, areturn to their familiar 4-4 defensewill likely keep the Little Dutchmenin contention.

So there you have our forecast, fearless and bold.

For years, they went at each other likerivals do, and every game seemed likeArmy-Navy.

No quarter was given, none asked whenLancaster Catholic met the Section One heavy-

weights: Manheim Township, McCaskey, Wilson,Hempeld, etc.

We had kids from all the different school dis-tricts, then-Crusaders coach Joe Mack recalled. We had all sorts of big games because we had (the

opponents) kids. Now, with Lancaster Catholic returning to Section

One of the Lancaster-Lebanon League following alengthy and dominant stay in Section Three, there is asense of things coming full circle.

Retro rivalries will be renewed. Week after week, itwill be one riveting duel after another.

Just like it was in the early 1980s, when Catholickicked off its run of championships with victories inthe rst two years of districts, 1982 and 83.

Manheim Township was really good, McCaskeywas really good, Wilson, Hempeld ... , said Mack,

now an assistant under Mike Williams at ManheimCentral.

We were winning, but we werent blowing peopleout.

Wilson coach Doug Dahms recalls those days.We remember when (the Crusaders) were in Sec-

tion One, said Dahms, whose Bulldogs have bossedSection One for years now.

To have their program back in Section One, itbrings back the rivalries.

Dahms coaching opposite at Catholic, of course, isBruce Harbach. Harbach and Dahms worked on thesame Wilson staff under Jim Cantao, and Harbachteaches at Wilson.

Think that wont add a little spice to their WeekSeven collision at Rossmere Stadium?

The players know Bruce teaches at our school,Dahms said. Were friends, well play our psychologi-

cal games (the week of thegame).

At the moment, Harbachis less concerned with thepsychological and morefocused on the physical as-pects of playing big schools

on a weekly basis. Our entire schedule isQuad-A, he said. Weregoing to have to come toplay. There are no easygames on our schedule.

And, the Crusaders haveless bodies to contend with

said schedule. After suiting up 72 during their 16-0campaign a year ago, Catholic is down to 48 players onits current roster.

So depth is a concern, particularly when it comes tothe seasons stretch run.

What concerns me, Harbach stated, is WeeksEight, Nine and 10.Still, he acknowledged that returning to Section

One has energized the program.Theres a lot of interest, he said. Our community

is excited, our players are excited. And from all appearances, Crusader players

welcome the test a tougher schedule affords. Theywelcome, too, the chance to have extended playingtime prior to the postseason.

Its a great opportunity, said senior Sean Titus, anAll-State free safety and star wide receiver who madethe clinching touchdown catch last December in the

Class AA state title game.I can play full games (in the regular season) for the

    played like 101-w

    (of 16)games.Two-way starting

lineman Shay Mentolooks at the challengethis season presents andsees opportunity.

A great opportunity, he said, to show what weremade of by playing a higher level of competition.

A level of competition Lancaster Catholic knewyears ago, back in its rst district title season of 1982.

Back when Mack was at the wheel of the program.

When QB Jim Wagner was handing off to ChrisHogarth and Tom Burger and Chris Juba, and rightguard Craig Rohrbaugh, right tackle Kevin Brockieand tight end Jim Miklos escorted Brian Kopanski

into the end zone for the game-winning score to edge York

Suburban in the title game inHersheypark Stadium.

When the Crusaderdefense played with justenough poise and savvy,as the Intelligencer Journal

noted in its account of thetitle game, to earn a 23-22 win.

We had a really good group of kids, Mack said.We did pretty well for three or four years and thenthe bottom fell out. We couldnt sustain it.

The bottom fell out, Mack said, because the Crusad-ers talent level fell off.

We still had kids out, we were always in the 50-70range (of roster players), he recalled. But we didntget as many good players.

When Catholic fell from contention in Section One

Mack said there was a desire from within the program

to drop down. But, he added, there was resistance

from others with ties to Catholic High.

We had always been there (in Section One) anda lot of alumni wanted to stay there, he said. They

were like, We can beat these guys.

But anytime you play a Quad-A schedule, its dif-

cult. Week after week, the competition is tough. Every

week, the kids are a little bit bigger, a little bit faster

than they are in Section Three.

Wilson, he added, looks like a college team.

Harbach and the Crusaders are under no illusions

concerning the challenges that await them this season.

Lets face it, he said, every year the Section One

title goes through Wilson. This year, the defending state champs are hoping to

set up a detour or two.

    Continued fromA4

    Our entire schedule is Quad-A.

Were going to have to come to play. There are no easy games on our

    schedule.

Year Two o the RonZeiber Era at Hemp-

feld begins much di-erently than the frst

year. Were so ar ahead o where we

were coming into the frst (camp),Zeiber shared on a pleasant late-

summer morning. Its been goinga whole lot better.

Hired late in the process in 2011,

Zeiber and his sta scrambled tocatch up. As did the Black Knights.

It was about halway throughthe season when the lightbulbs just

started clicking about how every-thing was supposed to ft together.

It takes a while, but once you

get a program in place, a system in

place, it perpetuates itsel. Wevegot a ull year now. Weve spent an

entire o-season working on get-ting ourselves mentally and physi-

    cally prepared.Zeibers Knights appear pre-

    pared.

They are certainly loaded withreturning skill players on oense,

and a strong group o deensivestalwarts.

Weve got a lot o guys back,

Zeiber acknowledged, so theres alot o positives.

But, he cautions, it doesntmatter whos back, who we are orwhat your stats were.

Its a new season. Nobody givesyou games. It doesnt matter ... i

you cant get out on the feld andget it done.

Hempfeld should get it done. The Knights return the L-L

    Leagues leading rusher in All-Sec-

tion running back Joey Gamble, aswell as the 10th overall ballcarrier,

    quarterback Michael Murr.Gamble, a 5-10, 160-pound se-

nior, rushed 220 times or 1,446

yards two yards more than Con-estoga Valleys Anthony Brown

    and scored 18 touchdowns.Murr (6-0, 160) ound the end

zone 10 times on the ground, pick-

ing up 852 yards on 152 carries. Healso completed 71 o 136 passes or899 yards and three TDs.

Mike ... can be a 1,000-1,000guy, said Zeiber. He was closelast year and (he) knows the o-ense inside and out.

Hoping to help Murr reach theaerial 1K are returning wide re-ceivers Wilson Lopez (22-254, 1TD) and Treavon Hinton, a 6-oot,160-pound target.

    While the Knights were run

heavy last year, their multiplespread oense is hardly predict-able. Nor are they inclined to pounda square peg into a round hole.

Theres been games whereJoe (Gamble) rushed or well over200 yards, where we threw eightpasses. Theres other games wherewe threw 20-some passes and Joe

    rushed 12 times.

Up ront the Knights return ju-

    Knights are poised, ready

Hempelds Joe Gamble rushed for a L-L League-high 1,446 yardsduring the regular season last year and scored 18 touchdowns.

Knights:Ready from the start this season

Hempeld quarterback Michael Murr completed 71of 136 passes for 899 yardslast season.

nior center J.D. Aument (5-10, 210), a Second Team Sec-

tion One selection, and junior tackle Joey Goodhart (6-

    4, 250).

Aument and Goodhart are two-way players who g-

ure to play a big role in the Knights 3-5 stack defense.

A defense that is hungry to move up to the top 10 in

    the league.

Theyre running around. Theyre a lot more aggres-

sive, Zeiber allowed. An aggression made possible by,

    yes, experience.

They feel more condent. Theyre more comfort-

able with whats going on. We always say if you make

them think, you tie their feet. Right now their feet

arent tied.Tying down the middle of the stack is First Team

Section One nose guard Austin Young (5-10, 292).

Goodhart joins Young on the line while Aument joins

linebackers Jared Gerlitzki (5-10, 196), Bryan Pyle (5-

    10, 207) and Tyler Ruhl (6-1, 206).

Roaming the secondary are cornerbacks Issiah Ben-

nett (5-11, 156) and Havier Rodriguez (5-9, 151).All but Goodhart and Aument are seniors.

This team, theyve been together for a while, said

Zeiber. Theyre ready for some success and theyve

    certainly worked for it.

Theres always a lot oftrepidation when a highschool football team hasto start sophomores.

Theres a notion that says a teamloses a game for every sophomoreit starts but sometimes a team hasno choice.

Teams take those lumps andlook forward to the day when thesophomores are seasoned seniors,or maybe even juniors.

That day has apparently arrivedfor Penn Manor.

Beginning with quarterbackAdam Sahd, who will start for athird season, the Comets are an ex-perienced bunch. This is the seasonthat loomed as the reward for allthe frustrations they felt the lastcouple of seasons.

I think we have a seasonedgroup this year, overall, not justwith the senior class, said coachTodd Mealy. The offensive and de-fensive systems we installed weredone with this group in mind. Therest of the coaches and I are ex-cited to see these kids compete onFridays.

While Penn Manor endured itsshare of growing pains the last twoseasons, it was still able to sneakinto the playoffs, giving this yearsteam the added bonus of having ex-perienced postseason play.

Last year, we were disap-pointed that we lost two games weshould have won, Mealy said. Ifwe win one of those games, we geta better seed in the playoffs (avoid-ing Wilson). In spite of that, westarted four or ve sophomores butwe made the playoffs for the fourthstraight year.

This season, the Comets willstart juniors and seniors.

There is something to be saidfor experience, Mealy said. Youdont have to be a great talent butif you have experience and under-stand how to play the game and inthe system, youre so much of a bet-ter football player instead of havinggreat speed or strength.

The experience may benetSahd more than any other playerbecause of the position he plays.Last season, he rushed for 662 yards(10 games) and threw for 1,152 withsix TDs.

Adam will go into the seasonas one of the most physically pre-pared players in the league, Mealysaid. Hes a competitor, and hesvery positive. Hes good to coach

because he can take criticism andis always looking for something tolearn and get better.

The Comets will have severaloptions as far as ball carriers go.Chief among them, however, willbe Brandon Stone, who averaged5.2 yards per carry last season andscored 11 rushing TDs. Like lastseason, Stone will also catch passesout of the backeld.

In the past, at the beginning ofgames, were usually really slow,Stone said. But this year, I feelwell be up-tempo right out of the

gate. Were seasoned, so we shouldbe able to get on the attack quickly.

At receiver, Penn Manor returnsDaulton Parmer, who was second inSection One with 54 catches for 617yards last season. Like Sahd, hesalso a three-year starter.

But Parmer wont be Sahds lonetarget. This season, the Comets ex-pect to spread the ball around more.

I wouldnt expect to see record-breaking numbers from any playerthis season, Mealy said. No 1,000-yard running backs or receiverswith 50 catches.

Other receiver targets includeAdam Hess, Brett Caggiano andAdrian Viruet.

Manors offensive line will be an-chored by senior Joe Timmins, whomoves from guard to center. Ethan

Barley, whos played two seasonsat center, starting when he was afreshman, moves to tight end. KyleMusser (6-0, 240) returns up frontas does Mitch Sweigart (6-5, 235).

Last season, Penn Manors de-fense yielded just 169 points, sec-ond fewest among Section Oneteams. Opponents managed 261.7yards per game, again, No. 2 in Sec-tion One.

The Comets will try to improveon those numbers with Hess, Bar-ley and Alex Quinn starting for athird straight season. Sweigart, atwo-year starter, and Timmins givethe Comets more defensive experi-ence.

Patrolling the secondary willbe Parmer (seven interceptions),last seasons Defensive Back of theYear in Section One.

Penn Manor is also coming off aseason in which it had 23 takeawaysand 12 giveaways, for one of thebest ratios in the league.

Two years ago, we turned itover a ton, Mealy said. So, lastseason, we emphasized it. We talkabout it all the time, until it becomesingrained.

While the Comets are blessedwith experience, that alone doesnot equal wins. Mealy said he seesa battle every week.

Ive been in the league since 99and I havent seen the league thisgood in 10 years, he said. A lot ofteams are like us, with experiencereturning. So, what we have at PennManor is not an exception. We haveto make sure were focusing a weekat a time and respecting everyonewe play.

    Experience key for Comets

Comets QB Adam Sahd brings two seasons of experience under cen-ter into his senior season.

As far as team mantras go,Manheim Townships 2012 sloganmay have the most depth.

All in.Those two simple words carry

    numerous meanings for the BlueStreaks.

It rst starts with Townshipsnew coach, and former longtimeElco boss, Mark Evans.

Evans, who replaced Mike Me-lynk, who left for Mount Lebanonafter 13 years in Neffsville, tookthe position just a few months ago.Evans will also be a guidance coun-selor in the high school at Townshipand hes moved his family into thedistrict to engrain himself into thecommunity.

I want the players to be com-mitted and I wanted to show them, and the community, that I am com-mitted to this school, said Evans, who also raved about the programMelnyk built.

The players, too, had to go allin to learn Evans new offense andnew defensive coordinator, and

former Catholic DC, Jami Sands3-3 stack defense. Because Evanswasnt hired until June, the playershad only the summer to play catchup.

What weve been able to do innine weeks is a compliment to ourstaff, said Evans. There are two

holdovers from Coach Melnyksstaff and theyve helped in explain-ing the new terms.

Senior quarterback BrennanScott, who led the league last yearwith 2,089 passing yards, believes

the team will have the mental partof the new schemes down by therst game.

Its still football, said Scott, who threw 24 touchdowns passesand just three interceptions last

year. Its all the same concepts butjust different terms. We feel prettygood that by the end of camp weshould have it down.

Scott, who is 390 yards shy of5,000 career passing yards, high-lights the group of six returningstarters on offense.

Receiver Tyler Karpinski, line-men Gavin Johnson and DavidSanchez, tailback Ray Martinez

and fullback Alex Zug are return-ing from an offense that was sec-ond in the section with 351 yardsper game.

The skill guys are the strengthof our team right now, Evans said. There have been some pleasantsurprises up front, too.

The players are condent thatthe underclassmen have enoughtalent to ll any holes created bygraduation.

We have a lot of good under-classmen that will need to step

up and contribute, said Sanchez. And they can do that.

Defensively, Karpinski returnsin the secondary and his brotherTroy is back at linebacker. Johnsonand Sanchez return up front whileEvan Buckwalter, Everett Greenand Zug return at linebacker.

Township, which nished theregular season at 8-2, sufferedlosses to eventual state champi-ons Central Dauphin and districtrunner-up, and Section One champ,

Wilson. The Streaks also reachedthe rst round of the District Threeplayoffs and lost to South Westernin the rst round.

Whether Township can at leastduplicate last years success will beevident quickly. The Streaks scrim-maged Bishop McDevitt, the PIAAClass AAA runner-up, open withCentral Dauphin, the PIAA ClassAAAA champs, and take on Lan-caster Catholic, the PIAA Class AAchampions, in the section opener.

Its going to be tough thisseason, especially with Catholiccoming in, Tyler Karpinski said.Every week is going to be reallycompetitive and should be fun.

Said Evans, I think we haveone of the toughest schedules andI wouldnt want it any other way.

Bob Locker has nothingagainst the Warwickmedical staff. He justwishes he didnt see

them so often.Plagued by injuries a year ago,

the Warriors can only hope thisyear is different.

By Week Six or so, out of ouroriginal 22 start-ing positions, 13or 14 of themwere standing onthe sideline withan injury, Lockerrecalled. It was atough year.

    Youre not go-

ing to win a lot of football games inSection One if you have that manykids out.

What will help the Warriors tryto rebound from its rst losing sea-son since 2005 (2-8) is the return ofZack Hurst at quarterback and TomDevenney on the offensive line.

Hurst, who started six gamesat QB as a sophomore two yearsago, was moved to wide receiverlast year and was one of the many

Warriors bitten by the injury bug.He missed multiple games with ashoulder injury.

He has a great arm, said Lock-er of the 6-foot senior. He missedthat junior year of experience, buthes pretty bright when it comes toplaying quarterback and hes veryathletic. Were very happy withwhere he is right now.

Devenney, a 6-foot-3, 280-poundsenior guard, anchors an experi-enced O-line in front of Hurst.

He is joined up front by the likesof fellow seniorsA.J. Sanderson(6-0, 215), IvanZelaya (6-0, 250),Brent Brossemer(6-4, 250) and Tal-lon Burkholder (6-0, 215), all of whomsaw time last fall.

I think we have a lot of talenton the line because we have a lotof experience coming back, saidDevenney. I think well be able todo a lot of things that maybe peopledont think we can do.

No one will argue that Deven-ney is the cream of the crop. He isthe reigning Section One OffensiveLineman of the Year and has at-tracted attention from numerouscollege programs.

    Devenney, who ranks seventh in

his class (down from second a yearago), has already visited Lehigh,Bucknell, Penn, Princeton and Har-

vard.I wasnt a huge fan of the area,

but its still Harvard, Devenneysaid. You cant eliminate Harvardif you have the option.

But he does admit Princeton isamong his favorites.

If you have a chance to go to an

Ivy League school, you almost haveto go there, said Devenney. If youget hurt playing football you haveto have something to fall back onand an Ivy education is the best youcan get.

Im going to nd a college outthere thats right for me, he added. If its Division III or Division I, if Ilike it, thats where Im going to go.Im not too worried about what any-body else thinks, because its mydecision.

While he goes through whathe calls a long, slow process ofmaking his college choice, Deven-ney and 17 other seniors have theirsights set on turning the Warwickfortunes around.

The ip side (to last yearshealth woes) is these kids got plentyof experience, said Locker. Hav-ing depth means competition. Com-petition means better practices andbetter practices, hopefully, lead to

better games. And hopefully fewer trips to the

    trainers room.

    Warriors seek health, improvement

Zack Hurst,a quarter-back as asophomore, moves backto QB afterspendinglast seasonas a widereceiver.

culture change withinany organized groupcan be difcult to ac-

complish, but thatsexactly what Cedar Crest willstrive or this season.

Were trying to get rom want-ing to win, to hoping to win, tothinking we can win, Falconscoach Tom Waranavage said. Andthats where we are with this oot-ball program.

For us, with where weve beenand how hard weve been workingon trying to change the culture and

climate within our ootball pro-gram, the frst step is that we needto become more competitive.

Ater losing nine starters on theoensive and deensive sides othe ball rom a 1-9 team a year ago,Crest is counting on a handul onew aces to bring a new competi-tive lie to the Falcons.

Senior Nick Cascarino will becounted on to carry much o the re-sponsibility rom the quarterback

position in his frst year as the ull-time starting QB.

Cascarino will fll the void letby 2011 L-L League Section OneSecond-Team All-Star quarterbackGarrett Levengood, who fnishedsecond in Section One with 1,389passing yards and 19 touchdowns.

I have no reservations aboutNick running the spread oense, said Waranavage. Its his frst yearas ull-time starting quarterback

but its not like he hasnt takenmeaningul varsity snaps.

Hes a flm junkie and has doneall you ask your QB to do. We metduring the entire oseason and heknows what I expect. Hes a youngman who has worked to win.

Joining Cascarino in the back-feld will be senior Erickson Gon-zalez and juniorGrant Boehler.Cascarino will

also count on WRDaulton Kalbachand slot receiversDamon Edwardsand Evan Horn.

The young group o receiverswill try to replace the productionlost rom 2011 Section One First-Team All-Star WR Daulton Ritter, who caught 48 passes or 841 yardsor 10 touchdowns.

    Senior returning two-way start-

er Steven Galbraith will be countedon heavily to anchor the Falconsoensive line and play linebacker

in CCs 3-4 deense. Joining Gal-braith on the o-line are guardsBrian Kaley and Austin Elliott andtackles Devon Lutz and John Zug.

(Steven) Galbraith understandsootball, Waranavage said. Hes

a ootball player, not a kid that onlyplays ootball (andgoes through themotions). He has aeel or the gameand understandswhat is going on.

Gonzalez, Kal-bach and Adam Gilson will roundout the linebacking corps or theFalcons and junior Gage Ocker willbe counted on as a linchpin in thesecondary at saety.

    The culture change has already

begun or the Falcons and has beenon display early in the preseasonas Waranavage says its been the

most physical camp hes had whilecoaching at Cedar Crest.

The Falcons only return twostarters on oense and deense, butthe inexperience may be a blessingin disguise or Waranavage.

I dont know that its a badthing (to count) on youngsters tobring a new competitive lie to theteam, he said. When youre try-ing to change a culture o not hav-ing success, its easier to do thatwith younger kids. Thats all part othe process. Obviously, we want towin and were working to win, butweve got to put ourselves in a posi-tion to do that.

We need to be in games in thethird and ourth quarter to giveour kids a shot to win those gamesand be successul. I think thats the

very frst thing we need to do andthats what weve been working to-

    wards.

There was talk this pastoffseason of LancasterCatholic engaging in aco-op with Lancaster

Mennonite to allow prospectivefootball players from the latterto join the former.

Mennonite, you see, does nothave a football team.

Didnt happen.Too bad for the Crusaders.

They could have used them. The reigning PIAA Class AA

champions roster lists 49 names, down signicantly from the 72 ofa year ago.

Gone from last years 16-0squad the rst team in countyhistory to win 16 games in a sea-son are six starters on offense

and an equal number on defense.Among the missing on offenseare All-State lineman Adam De-

Pietro, who fronted an offensethat rang up 668 points and 6,712yards; fellow road-graders Antho-ny Juliano and Jacob Rider; quar-

terback Andrew Dzurik (109-173-1,994, 21 TDs, 5 INTs.) and backupMac McCafferty (who has chosento concentrate on baseball); andwideouts Charles Sweigert (45-914, 20.3, 5 TDs) and Peter Heise.

    Defensively, the Crusaders willmiss Rider (63 tackles; 2 sacks)and DePietro (21; 1) on the line;Heise (73; 1; 1 Int.) and fellow line-backers Brandon Hollister (123; 2sacks) and Bobby DePietro (82; 1;

    1); and Sweigert (43 stops, 9 Ints.)in the secondary.

The good news for head coach

Bruce Harbachs longtime SectionThree champs as they move up toSection One is that they return abevy of talented players.

Senior All-State running backRoman Clay (5-11, 215) is a physi-cal runner who pounded out 1,899yards and 31 TDs and averaged10.3 yards per carry.

Backeld mate Carmelo Cruz(6-0, 225) added 241 yards on just

31 carries and averaged 7.8 perhaul. Patrick Anstett (5-10, 190)started ve games a season ago, will also see time in what promisesto be a punishing backeld.

Sean Titus (37-187, 14.4, 1 TD)will team with Isiah Taltoan atwideout, while Nevin Pagan, whostarted ve games last season, handles tight end duties. CharlesScarff (6-6, 220) is a big target whoruns well and will operate at both

wideout and tight end.The line will be manned by
