We believe that education is vital to the health of the mind and soul and hope to make a difference to individuals, so they can go on achieving long after they leave the Nishkam Centre. We offer a range of classes with a tailored atmosphere of guidance and motivation that is perfect for your specific development goals. Take our tutors for example, each are dedicated to helping you find your specific passion, add value to it and help you commit to learning and achieving. No matter what your goal is we aim to provide an environment that will ensure you realise your potential.

Recently awarded The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the NCA has been recognised as a centre of excellence for our continuous commitment and was successfully awarded the Investors in Volunteers (IIV) accreditation. Based within the hub of the community, the Nishkam Centre is located within easy reach of the city centre and local communities. Built in 2005, the Nishkam Centre has been designed to meet all standards and nominated for the ‘Built in Quality Awards 2006’, further testimony to our commitment as a first class provider.

With a new academic year approaching, the Nishkam Centre have brought together a new course prospectus, which covers a variety of new exciting learning opportunities starting from September 2012 onwards.

With many calibres of courses available, the Nishkam Centre prospectus covers a wide range of classes that will appeal to the whole community, offering levels that vary from beginners to advanced.

English for Speakers of other languages (ESOL) is designed to help and teach those who do not speak English as their primary language.

Aiming to improve your English skills, the ESOL classes will give you the confidence that you need, to boost you into speaking English more often.

Adult Literacy

What is Adult Literacy?Based on the National Adult Core curriculum, the certificate for Adult Literacy is classed as a national ‘skills for life’ qualification. Divided into manageable sections, Adult Literacy helps learners to engage with the material and also relate it to everyday life. Completing each module will help you get one step closer in your goal to get that Adult Literacy certificate; which is an equivalent to a GCSE.

What progression is there for me in Adult Literacy?The progression is divided into three modules: writing, vocabulary/spelling & grammar and reading.

Module: WritingYou might want to learn how to spell common English words and when to use basic grammar like capital letters and full stops. Or

maybe you’d like to learn how to check for errors in your work and use the right words and sentences for a certain audience. Either way this module is to help you become more confident in using the English language.

Writing (Level 1)• Spell basic things like the days of the week or numbers one to ten.• Recognise the sounds letters make.• Know when to use full stops and capital letters.• Plan the kind of language you want to use.• Write notes, lists, texts and e-mails.• Avoid common writing mistakes.• Organise your writing.

Module: Vocabulary, Spelling and GrammarThis module will help you successfully use the English vocabulary, spelling and grammar correctly. Aiding you to gain confidence with writing your work, this course will showcase your writing talent to your employers.

Module: ReadingIf you find reading difficult, this module is great for you to overcome this problem. By taking this module you’ll be able to learn the skills you need to read everyday words and pieces of writing.Whatever you’re struggling with, doing practice questions and getting plenty of feedback will help you get to grips with any problem areas.

Reading (Level 1)• Be familiar with strategies for reading everyday texts.• Know about strategies for working with instructions and explanations.• Be familiar with techniques for working with forms.• Know about different reading strategies.• Be able to apply your skills to complete the assignments.Reading (Level 2)• Know about sentences and grammar structure.• Know about vocabulary and word work.• Be familiar with a variety of spelling strategies.• Be able to apply your skills to complete the assignments.

How is Adult Literacy assessed?Like the Adult Numeracy course, Adult Literacy is tested similarly. The test will be available on or offline and is constructed as a standard national test which will consist of 40 multiple choice questions. The questions will be based on everyday scenarios, with each group of questions testing different aspects of reading writing and numeracy.

You might want to learn how to spell common English words and when to use basic grammar like capital letters and full stops. What is Adult Numeracy?The Adult Numeracy Course provides you with a refresher course, which aims to help refine your key Maths skills and help boost your self-esteem. This Numeracy course covers many different areas of Maths and helps you to overcome those problems areas that you may be struggling within Numeracy. Completing each module helps you to get one step closer in your goal to get that Adult Numeracy certificate; which is an equivalent to a GCSE. We will be providing you with the help you need plus the friendly atmosphere, we promise that you will be guaranteed success and will get that one step further in your journey with us.

What progression is there for me in Adult Numeracy?OCR Level 1 and 2 in Adult Numeracy and Entry Level 3 Certificate in Adult Numeracy.

Module: Common MeasuresThis module is for those who are having trouble with measurements. Packed with many practical tips that will help you every single day, the common measures module will give you advice on how to measure accurately.• Measure length, width and height.• Measure weight.• Read the temperature.• Add, subtract, multiply and divide money.• Tell the time.• Understand a calendar and the different seasons.

Module: Whole NumbersThis module is designed to help you improve your skills and increase your confidence in working with numbers. Suiting all different levels of ability, whether you’d like to learn the very basics or just develop the skills you already have, the NCA Learning and Development Team will help you to work out what level you are at and point you in the right direction.• Read and write numbers.• Put numbers in order.• Add and subtract numbers.• Use a calculator.• Use positive and negative numbers.• Do long multiplication and long division.• Understand ratios, factors and prime numbers. Module: Shape and SpaceWhether you’re planning a new kitchen or want to make thebest use of space when packing awkward shapes, a good understanding of space and shape will make the task much easier.• Know the names of flat and solid shapes• Recognise different shapes• Understand ‘inside’, ‘outside’, ‘between’, ‘next to’ and ‘near to’.• Understand how a flat drawing could represent a 3D shape• Create different views of a shape.

Module: Handling DataCan you find what you’re looking for in a list or timetable? Do you find it hard to get information from a graph? Charts and diagrams can be useful tools at work, if you have the skills to understand the data they contain. This course will help you to understand complex data in charts, diagrams and line graphs.• Use a spread sheet program.• Read information from lists, charts and graphs.• Sort objects into groups.• Use data you’ve collected to create charts.• Understand how to calculate the mean, median, mode and range.• Use signs and symbols.

Module: Fractions and DecimalsSharing the bill in a restaurant, dividing the kids into teams at football practice, working out the cost of something that is half price - these are all things we have to do from time to time. If you struggle to work with parts of numbers, or fractions, this is the perfect course for you.• Divide things like money or time by half.• Find a quarter of an amount.• Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions.• Be able to work out a fractions as a percentage and as a decimal.

• Compare and simplify fractions.• Divide something into different parts.

How is Adult Numeracy assessed?Each of these courses are split into manageable and achievable sections of learning, giving students an opportunity at the end of each section to take a test to assess their knowledge. The test will be available on or offline and is constructed as a standard national test which will consist of 40 multiple choice questions that must be completed within 75 minutes. Once you have completed level one, you can then proceed to level two and so forth. Gaining the Numeracy certificates can enhance employment or further learning opportunities.

Once completed you shall become skilled in the fundamentals of using a computer and all the most popular applications. You’ll learn the computer basics including hardware and software. You will use Microsoft Word to edit and print documents, edit data in Excel, and learn how to manage the storage of your documents in files and folders.

Finally you will cover how to use the internet including social networking and e-commerce.

ITQ (Level 2 Certificate for IT Users)

What is ITQ?This course is provided for those students who need help and support with achieving their IT certificate level two.

The Learning and Development team will guide you on how to plan and review your use of IT systems and software and also teach you how this course will help enhance your productivity.

Awarded and managed in the UK by the British Computer society, ECDL is a widely recognised assessment for nonspecialist IT users, which has been created to validate your ability within the work place.

To gain your qualification the course will consist of:• The BCS Level 2 Certificate for IT Users covers Modules 3 to 6 of the modules that make up the full ECDL.• Improving productivity using IT• Word Processing• Forumulate spread sheets• Create powerful presentations

Spoken in India, areas of Pakistan, Kenya and other countries; Punjabi is now the 11th most spoken language in the world and 2nd most in the UK. Like many other languages Punjabi has changed as the years have gone on. Growing and developing by including many local jargons and terms from the many different regions where it is spoken.

Textile Work

Textile Work for Beginners:If you have no experience of sewing but you always wanted to learn then this beginner’s class is the right place to start. You will learn hand and machine operations in making your own patterns and designs.

You will be taught how to measure and cut material both free hand and from patterns; different stiches and there usage, neckline, sleeves, hemming, garment fitting and fashion design.

Advanced Textile Work:Moving on from the beginners the advanced Sewing and Fashion class is for those who already know how to do the basics but would like to develop their skills further.

This class would be more fast paced and test and push your abilities with your material and how you craft them. Looking at commercial patterns, sewing machine techniques & garment construction.

What is a Tabla?A tabla is a classical Indian instrument that is commonly played throughout Indian culture, that is used to accompany vocal and instrumental music and dance.

A tabla is a pair of drums, which consists of a small right hand drum called a dayan and a larger metal one called a bayan. The modern tabla has a highly developed technique of playing and in the hands of a master player it is capable of producing all patterns of rhythms and cross-rhythms that a musician can conceive of. The point of the instrument is to create a type of bell like sound which is one of the prominent characteristics of the instrument.

Why take tabla lessons at the Nishkam Centre?We are providing male and female classes, of mixed ability, taught by renowned tabla player Surdashan Singh. He will help you not only to learn the skills of the tabla but to also improve your tabla playing. You will find that the tabla is a versatile instrument that is rewarding to play. However like all other instruments learning the tabla takes time, so please do not be discouraged if you cannot seem to grasp it straight away, there will always be a tutor at hand if you need it.

Sitar Class

What is a Sitar?Sitar is the most popular instrument in Hindustani music. The structure and tonal quality of the modern sitar is a result of several years of hard work and devotion put in by artists and craftsmen.

Sitar literally is a form of the Persian word - sitar - which means three strings, “Tar” in Punjabi means “string”. In the beginning, there were only three strings, but now seven strings are used and there are other strings for resonating. Why take sitar lessons at the Nishkam Centre?The sitar class is a new feature that the NCA have brought to the term class list this year. Open to beginners and advanced students alike (with the maximum of seven students per hour) sitar will help you grow in your music skills and help you have a greater feel for Indian culture. Taught by the professionally trained and renowned sitarist Rupinder Kaur Panesar, this class will help get your creativity flowing and help improve your skills with string instruments, it is a class that should not be missed.

What is Thanti Saaj?Thanti Saaj are the stringed instruments of the Sikhs and were played by the Guru Ji’s themselves.

These great instruments are returning to their rightful place in Guru’s court, as more people are learning Gurmat Sangeet and ‘Tanti Saaj’. These instruments include the Dilruba, Taus, Sarangi & Saranda.

At the NCA these classes will be taught through the Gurmat Sangeet Academy, which aims to promote tanti saaj based kirtan done in accordance with Gurmat.

Classical Indian Vocal Coaching

About the Course:This is the teaching of Indian classical vocal coaching and performance from renowned teacher Ustad Surinder Singh.

Surinder Singh’s passion for music drives him to achieve the highest possible standards of self-learning and teaching. Surinder started training at the age of 12 from Karam Singh (altiala gharana) and later in England with Mohn Singh Mussapuri. He returned to India in 1976 to study with Baiharilal (disciple of Bede Ghulam Ali Kahn), and Bakur Hussain of the atala gharana. These two teachers taught Surinder Singh the khayal style of sangeet including other influences from Ustad Sabri Khan Sahib (saurangi player).

His classes can range from workshops, to teaching for specific projects including performance/theatre and regular curriculum based teaching with a defined syllabus, with an age ranging from 5-50 years. If you enjoy performing and love to sing this would be an ideal class for you as it will help enhance your performing abilities.

Sikh History

About the Course:Founded over 500 hundred years ago by Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Sikh Dharam now has over 20 million followers around the world. In Punjabi the word ‘Sikh’ means ‘to learn’, as we are God’s disciples spreading His love and message throughout the world. Through the teachings of the 10 Guru’s and the Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh religion preaches a message of truthful living, equality and devotion and remembrance to God at all times.

We are offering Sikh history so that everyone and anyone can find out more about Sikh history and what it means to be a Sikh.

RequirementsWe aim to Inspire, Educate and Empower every student that studies at the Nishkam Centre. By the time you finish your course we hope to have supplied you with the tools and motivation to continue upwards and achieve your potential even when we are no longer there.

Conferences & EventsThe Nishkam Centre has award winning conference and events facilities. With a large conference suite, fully equipped seminar and training rooms, compact meeting rooms, open plan exhibition space and a video conferencing suite; the event team can organise and host any type of event. Catering, specialist equipment hire and other additional services are also available on request.

Wellbeing CentreThe health of body, mind and spirit lies at the very heart of the Wellbeing facilities inside the Nishkam Centre. The centre is culturally sensitive accommodating men and women on different days. It houses a fully equipped gym with sauna allowing you to relax after your workout. It also provides additional services such as a yoga course, massage and health screenings. The use of the Wellbeing Centre is strictly member-based; please ask at tReception for further information.
