thing works the way it is designed to and operates at
maximum efficiency.
You can be certain a member of the building industry
with a CGP designation is a trained professional.
CGPs must complete three days of classroom instruction and have at least two years building industry experience before they earn the designa-tion. They also are required to adhere to the CGP Code of Ethics and complete 12 hours of building industry and green-related continuing education every three years.
If you are building a new home, a CGP understands
how to best take maximum advantage of the natural
contours of the land and how to preserve water quality
on site. For example, they will design a home’s
window placements to either promote the sun’s heating
effects in the home in colder climates, or offset it in
warmer regions. They’ll recommend trim, cabinets and
flooring that don’t use harmful solvents and sealers,
and they’ll show you how you can save water inside
and outside your home.
Some CGPs take their education further by seeking the
Master Certified Professional designation, introduced
just this year for builders and remodelers with long-
standing green building education and experience. As
green building practices expand in the future the
number of Master CGPs is expected to grow as well.

with the CGP educational designation understand green
building. These professionals know how to combine
good, cost-effective building science with an ever-
expanding selection of products and materials to build or
remodel a home with sustainability in mind. They are
trained to incorporate energy, water and resource
efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality and
sustainable and locally sourced products into their
projects – and to teach you how to best take advantage
of these features.
A CGP uses the National Green Building Standard to
help you understand all the factors that should be consid-
ered when building green. They will help you choose the

An educated shopper is a smart shopper. This especially hold true in the world of hiring and working with contractors to make improvements to your home.
As you interview potential contractors, being able to understand the terminology they use can help you avoid miscommunication and ensure a smoother remodeling experience so you and your family can enjoy your new or updated kitchen, bathroom or room addition even sooner.
Here’s a glossary of some of the common terms used by builders and remodelers to help you understand the language of your remodeling project:
Allowance: A specific dollar amount allocated by a contractor for specified items in a contract for which the brand, model number, color, size or other details are not yet known.
Bid: A proposal to work for a certain amount of money, based on plans and specifications for the project.
Building Permit: A document issued by a governing authority, such as a city or county building department, granting permission to undertake a construction project.
Call-back: An informal term for a return visit by the contractor to repair or replace items the home owner has found to be unsatisfactory or that require service under the warranty.
Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR): A professional designation program offered through the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelors™ Council. To attain the CGR designation, a remodeler must take a specified number of continuing education courses and must comply with a strict code of ethics.
Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS): The CAPS designation was developed by the National Association of Home Builders and AARP. CAPS professionals have been taught the strategies and techniques to meet the home modification needs of home owners who want to continue living in their homes safely, independently and comfortably, regardless of age or ability level. CAPS graduates pledge to uphold a code of ethics and are required to maintain their designation by attending education programs and participating in community service.
Change Order: Written authorization to the contractor to make a change or addition to the work described in the original contract. The change order should reflect any changes in cost.
Cost-plus Contract: A contract between a contractor and home owner based on the accrued cost of labor and materials plus a percentage for profit and overhead — also known as a time-and-materials contract.
Draw: A designated payment that is “drawn” from the total project budget to pay for services completed to date. A draw schedule typically is established in the contract.
Lien Release: A document that voids the legal right of a contractor, subcontractor or supplier to place a lien against your property. A lien release assures you that the remodeler has paid subcontractors and suppliers in full for labor and materials.
Mechanic’s Lien: A lien obtained by an unpaid subcontractor or supplier through the courts. When enforced, real property — such as your home — can be sold to pay the subcontractor or supplier. If a subcontractor or supplier signed a lien release, then this lien cannot be enforced.
Plans and Specifications: Drawings for the project, and a detailed list or description of the known products, materials, quantities and finishes to be used.
Punch List: A list of work items to be completed or corrected by the contractor, typically near or at the end of a project.
Subcontractor: A person or company hired directly by the contractor to perform specialized work at the job site — sometimes referred to as a trade contractor.

FEMA recommends putting together this basic emergency supply kit and keeping it in your home in an easily accessible location:
+ A three-day supply of food and water, including at least one gallon of water per person per day and non-perishable food items
+ A hand-crank or battery operated radio and a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Weather Radio withtone alert
+ A first-aid kit + A cell phone with chargers, an
inverter or a solar charger + Dust masks, plastic sheeting and
duct tape in case of a chemical event that contaminates the air
+ Items for personal sanitation such as moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties
+ Tools and supplies including a flashlight, a can opener, a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities, extra batteries and a whistle to signal for help
+ Maps of the local area
Other items you may want to keep with your kit include prescription medications; food or supplies for infants or pets; copies of important family documents such as insurance policies, medical histories, bank and financial records, and passports; cash and/or traveler’s checks; extra clothing, blankets or towels; a fire extinguisher and matches; and personal hygiene items.

Future of HomeThe economic downturn has changed the way Americans look at a lot of things, including what they are looking for in their next home. A study by the National Association of Home Builders suggests that the recession has caused prospective home buyers to shift their perspective on the housing they want and need, and that the new home of the future will focus more on efficiency than indulgence.
The survey asked builders, designers, architects, manufacturers, and marketing specialists about what they thought the likely characteristics of the average, new single-family detached home would be in 2015.
First, the typical size of new homes will continue to shrink, with respondents saying they expect homes to average 2,152 square feet. That is 10 percent smaller than the average size of single-family homes started in 2010. Census Bureau data shows that the average size peaked in 2007, at 2,521 square feet.
This decrease is likely influenced by economic hardship, with consumers focusing on lowering the cost of heating and cooling their homes as well as no longer having a lot of equity in their current homes to finance purchasing a much larger one. An aging population — 29 percent of the U.S. population will be 55 and older in the year 2020 — will also increase demand for smaller homes as empty-nesters downsize into easier-to-manage properties.

Future of HomeA smaller home means the space must be better suited to modern lifestyles. Fifty-two percent of builders expect the living room to be merged with other spaces in the home by 2015 and 30 percent said it will vanish entirely. Respondents also expect the entry foyer and dining rooms to become smaller, or merge with other spaces. A great room comprised of the kitchen, foyer and living room is the most likely room to be included in the average new home. Some of the rooms least likely to be present include two master bedroom suites, a sunroom, a hobbies room, and a media room.
Kitchens are also expected to become more functional. Double sinks, recessed lighting, table space for eating, a breakfast bar and pull-out drawers are the features most likely to be in the new home kitchen in 2015.
In addition to floor plan changes, it is expected that new homes in 2015 will include more green features and technology, including low-E windows; engineered wood beams, joists or trusses; water-efficient features such as dual-flush toilets or low-flow faucets; and an ENERGY STAR rating for the whole house.
Surprisingly, some new home features that have been popular in recent years are expected to lose favor with home buyers in the future. Less than a third of survey respondents said they thought more technology features, more universal features and more outdoor living features would be the first or second most probable trend.

When HBA home builder Sam Clifton agreed to lead the most ambitious Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project in the history of the wildly popular ABC program, he believed the building industry in the area would rise to the occasion and inspire continued, ongoing rebuilding efforts in Joplin... he was right. In October 2011, the Joplin project featureda team of professional local home builders that built seven homes in seven days for families who suffered losses in the May tornado that destroyed much of the city. Six builder members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Springfield (along with another three from the HBA of Southwest Missouri in Joplin) worked together – day and night – with very little sleep, for seven days to complete this monumental achievement.
