By Roger McKenzieIt’s baaack!America’s sport of football has suc-

ceeded the Olympics and slipped past baseball into our consciousness again; if it ever left.

Locally, the arrival of football sea-son brings some big changes in Alva. The football programs at Northwestern Oklahoma State and Alva High School find themselves at the beginning of new coaching eras.

New Ranger head coach Alan Hall has been busy since December getting the Northwestern Oklahoma State foot-ball program, now in Division II of the NCAA, lined up to start making history. At Alva High School, new coach Bruce Dollar hasn’t been here quite as long, but he’s about to start his first season with a big goal — winning a state champion-ship.

Their paths to Alva have been two very different journeys. But this writer hopes their paths, while here, will lead to the same destination — football success and glory. They operate at very different

levels, but each one is wildly supported here in Alva. If they build successful pro-grams, rest assured, the fans will come. Even if they don’t initially succeed, the fans will come anyway. That’s the level of commitment that makes Alva such a great sports town.

Alan Hall is just 39, but his foot-ball experience ranges from junior col-lege to NAIA to NCAA Division I. He played football at Miami University in that school’s heyday. He was lured to Northwestern from a private high school, where his team totaled 15 play-ers. He has nearly 150 at NWOSU. He’s coached at Newberry College in South Carolina and at Savannah State Univer-sity. But Northwestern is his first colle-giate job as a head coach.

“From the moment I got here, I felt like this was home,” he said.

Bruce Dollar arrived in Alva from Texas via New Mexico. The 63-year-old is in his 40th year of coaching. The first 27 came in Texas at 2A and 3A schools.

He moved his family to New Mexico and continued to coach, winning a state

championship and producing a state run-ner-up at different schools.

After retirement, he started his sec-ond coaching career. He is bold enough to say he moved to Alva for one reason.

“I want to win a state champion-ship,” he said.

● ● ● ● South Barber is also undergoing a

coaching change, but while it is pro-found in that Tim Rector is the first new head coach there in over two decades, Rector is a South Barber coach who is no newcomer.

Medicine Lodge underwent it’s change last year, and is thankfully now in the second year of Coach Faron Kraft’s direction.

The rest of the school’s in this edition — Waynoka, Timberlake, Cherokee, and Alva Middle School — are being led by well entrenched coaches.

All eight schools in the Newsgram’s circulation area generate the same type of enthusiastic support. That’s why we hope you’ll read and enjoy our 2012 spe-cial football preview edition.

By Roger McKenzieNote: A little history—After being

turned down and a subsequent year of suspense, Northwestern Oklahoma State University was accepted into the process to become an NCAA II member this past summer. The school’s athletic teams were already accepted into a new NCAA II conference pending the approval by the NCAA. The Great American Conference held its first athletic contests last season, the last season for Northwestern teams to play in the NAIA — the Central States Football League and the Sooner Athletic Conference. Now NWOSU teams will all (except for rodeo) play in the Great Amer-ican Conference as part of NCAA Division II. NCAA membership is a three-year pro-cess. The first two years are the “candi-dacy” period. That is followed by a year of “provisional” status. Then comes full membership.

The Ranger football team will be the first NWOSU team to officially play a Great American Conference contest when they face conference foe Ouachita Baptist University on Thursday, Aug. 30, in Rus-sellville, Ark., at A.U. Williams Field. Just who will the Tigers be facing?

New players — comprised of a small number of transfers and a majority of fresh-man, mostly from Oklahoma — dominate the 2012 Ranger football team, which is

headed by a new coach. Alan Hall will be starting his Ranger tenure in the first head coaching position he has ever held. He cer-tainly is not new to football, however, hav-ing coached at the NAIA and NCAA levels since his playing days at the University of Miami.

He talked about the team he and his new staff are molding. It’s a team he ad-mits he’s still learning about.

“We’re probably 70 percent new be-tween freshmen and transfers,” Hall said. “But the nice thing is that the 30 percent that’s come back from the spring has really bought in to what we’re doing.”

Currently, the Ranger team has almost 150 players, although about 50 will be red-shirted. The returnees, Hall said, are com-mitted to the advancement of the program. They are also providing leadership for the new players.

Some of the returning players will be easily recognizable for Ranger fans — quarterback Kyle Jech and running back Jared Jackson on offense, and kicker Ed-gar Colemenares. The defensive returnees outnumber the offensive ones, but may be less recognizable — linebacker Michael Harmon, defensive end Joe Esquivel, linebacker Eric Feemster, safety Zenario Shuler.

Some players eligible to return chose not to for whatever reason. Defensive

tackle Peter Brooks, defensive back Brock Wardlaw, and offensive guard Ray Grubbs are no longer listed on the roster. Also gone are familiar names like Cherokee’s Justin Schanbacher and Alva’s Jaedan Bersche and Conner Martin.

So if you need help understanding just who the Rangers are, join the club. You won’t find all the answers here. This is a work in progress. As the season advances, Ranger fans will get a better picture of the 2012 team.

Jech and Jackson are the only two of-fensive starters returning. There are five defensive returning starters, giving the Rangers a total of just seven starters who have come back from last season’s 4-6 CSFL team.

Still, Hall is pleased.“It’s a process. We’re moving in the

right direction,” he said, adding that he’d like to be moving faster.

“Some of the slowness is by design,” he noted, “because we want to do it right the first time.”

The staff is still juggling players, trying to find the right fit on offense and defense. With the majority of players new, the past weeks have been the first opportunity Hall and his coaches have had to really evaluate their skills.

Despite some key returnees, the Rangers are new, new, new

He describes practices as a competi-tion at just about every position out there. Even the returnees don’t have the luxury to sit back and rest on what they’ve done, because there are so many new people pushing them. Of course, a few players are starting to separate themselves from the pack. But Hall has resisted putting together a depth chart in order to keep the competi-tion going.

Despite the three-year process and not being able to advance to any playoffs for a while, the Rangers and all of Northwest-ern’s teams can still win the conference championship and individual players can lay claim to honors like All-Conference. So the Rangers have discussed goals, in-cluding winning the conference champion-ship.

“If you don’t talk about it, you don’t shoot for it,” said Hall. “We also talked about a perfect season.”

That won’t happen and Hall is realistic enough to know that a conference cham-pionship is highly unlikely with so many new players.

“We have a really talented young group of kids, but realistically for me, it’s not about wins and losses this year — al-though we want to go out and win them all,” he said. “It’s about first and foremost setting the foundation that we can continue to build upon, and then having our kids understand what it takes to compete at this level. A jump from the NAIA to NCAA is big. For high school kids, its huge.”

Hall let it be known that he would take a slower but steadier approach to winning.

“We could have gone the route of bringing in a lot of transfers. Instead, we

went the high school route mostly,” Hall explained. “I’ve got to look at the big pic-ture and look two or three years down the road.”

A realistic goal Hall has is to have a winning season. More importantly, he said he wants to see his players learn how to go to school, maintain their academic fo-cus, and lay the foundation for the years to come.

A look at the offenseThe Rangers will run a spread, multiple

offense — making use of a lot of personnel in different formations.

“We just try to get the ball into the peo-ple’s hands that we think can make plays, Hall said. Then let the athletic ability take over.”

Seniors Jech and Jackson will pass and run the ball, respectively. Jech passed for over 2,000 yards last season, and Jackson rushed for 749 yards. The Rangers will throw first and run second — not just be-cause of Jech’s talent, but because Hall said, “We’re always going to be quarter-back friendly here.”

“We’ll also play to our strengths,” he added. “We have a senior quarterback and a senior tailback, so you might see more run out of us this year than I’m accustomed to, just because of the depth of experience.”

Two junior tailbacks lend support for more running. Hall said he’ll probably ro-tate the running backs quite a bit.

Behind Jech are several quarterbacks. Hall mentioned freshman Reid Miller from Pampa, Tex. Who he said was a great ath-lete and whose father, Dustin Miller, is in the Ranger Hall of Fame. He also praised returnee Jake Streck, who he called a very

smart, heady player who knows “how to distribute the ball to the right places.”

A quarterback prospect for the future is Jacob Morgan, a big 6’3”, 230-pound junior college transfer who is being red-shirted.

“I’m pleased with the direction the quarterback position is going now,” Hall said.

The receiver corps is talented, but very young. Most are new and, because of that, the line-up is still in flux while learning the system. Hall called the group “a work in progress.”

Like the receivers, the offensive line is very young, although very deep in num-bers — which Hall estimated at 24 and growing. With linemen, he noted, you have to find the right fit because they work together as a unit.

“If we started today, we would prob-ably start five freshmen,” he said. “We have to push them along quicker than we’d like because we’re going to have to play a bunch of them. We have a few returnees, but we finished spring practice with just five offensive linemen. It’s an area we’re continuing to upgrade.”

There is size and athletic ability in the linemen. Hall said they are battling hard to get better.

Offensive leadership has been placed on the shoulders of Jech, Jackson, run-ning back Hunter Wolfe, and wide receiver Chris Chamberlain.

A look at the defenseThe Rangers advertise a multiple de-

fense with three down linemen, five line-backers and three backs in the secondary. Hall said the defense will make a lot of dif-ferent adjustments as they disguise things to confuse the offense. He called his de-fense an ‘attacking-style’ defense.

“We’re going to force you to make de-cisions sooner than you want to,” Hall said.

The athleticism, the ability to move around on defense, has impressed Hall more than anything else thus far. A lot of the team’s veteran players play on the de-fense, which has helped that area greatly.

“As young as we are on offense, we need to play well on defense, Hall noted. “We’ve still got some young kids on de-fense. They are coming along. The coach-es are doing a good job getting the defense prepared.”

Most of the defensive experience comes in the front line and at the inside linebacker position. Outside linebacker will be mostly manned by the young.

Three returnees are secondary backs, but the rest will be new.

The team’s defensive leadership falls to three seniors — inside linebackers Mi-

chael Harmon and Erick Feemster, and defensive lineman Josh Robinson — and sophomore Charles Schneider, a defensive lineman.

Some surprisesHall named some players who have

pleasantly surprised him and his coaching staff. Offensively, the list includes receiv-ers Jeremiah Anderson and Jarion Tudman and the five offensive linemen he men-tioned earlier — guards Stefan Simpson and Willy Handhold, tackle Austin May, and centers James Pitts and Carrie Farm-er (who are battling each other for that spot). A red-shirt freshman returnee, Zack Pritchard, has also provided some surpris-es and could be the fifth starter in the line.

Defensively, Hall mentions transfer David Cowan at inside linebacker, outside linebackers Rontez Smith and Sheldon Abernathy, and safeties Chris Ladd and Brandon Eddins.

The large squad will have some attri-tion. Already 15 players have left the pro-gram. But Hall said he would keep all who “will stay and do what we ask of them. He has told his players, “Nine-nine percent committed means you are 100 percent out.”

Hall and his coaches are 100 percent committed to bringing the Rangers to the GAC table and keeping them competitive there for the long haul.

By Roger McKenzieCoach Bruce Dollar has arrived to

take over the head coaching position for the Alva Goldbugs from Ryan Laverty, who left to go back to Edmond. Dollar, in his second career after retiring from his first coaching career after much suc-cess in Texas and New Mexico, knew

what he was doing when he applied for the Alva job. He saw that the Goldbugs have a lot of experience returning, and he jumped at the chance, because he said he wants to win a state championship here.

He certainly knows how, because he’s done it before. What’s unexpected is he wants to do it now.

“I’m going to try to get the whole thing,” Dollar said matter of factly. “Why wait? If you start putting off goals, then you usually don’t ever get there. Why wait? Why not do it twice?”

Such optimism hasn’t yet fully spread to his players, who are still get-ting to know him. Dollar was a little dis-appointed in the team’s intensity during its first scrimmage with Fairview. But he’s hopeful his optimism will spread.

Dollar has reason to be optimistic. Twenty-one returnees, including nine re-turning starters on offense and eight on defense, come back from last years 5-6 squad. The Goldbugs last season were better than that record shows, and they did make the play-offs. But, they were young then. So despite the big losses to graduation of players like Gavin Wil-lyard, Silas Martin, and Henry Nigh-swonger, the Goldbugs are loaded.

This year they will be lead by 10 se-niors, including three who didn’t play

last year. All are expected to make big contributions in both their playing and their leadership.

Fifteen new players (nine freshmen, three juniors, and three seniors) join the returnees. Despite 10 seniors, the ma-jority of the team, which includes 11 juniors, will be back again next year — which is why Dollar says, “Why not do it twice?”

It won’t be as easy as it sounds. Dol-lar and his players are still learning each other

“It takes time for them to learn my personality, and how I want things done,” the coach said. “I have something that I want to see in every practice. So far I am seeing it.”

He added that with time and more practice, his expectation level will go up.

A look at the offenseDollar knows the success Alva had

passing last season. As sophomores, quarterback Ty Hooper and wide receiv-er Riley Hess combined for over 1,000 yards throwing and catching. Hooper finished with almost 2,900 yards passing and 21 touchdowns. He’s got five of his top six receivers back.

But the coach also knows that this year everyone will be expecting the

From Page 10 GoldbugsGoldbugs to throw. Hooper also threw 14 interceptions last season, so if the Goldbugs continue to throw into the teeth of defenses geared for them, that number could go up.

Dollar says he plans to run a multiple offense with different looks that will stay on the ground as much as it goes through the air.

“We’ve got a good passer, but also good running backs, too, and he (Hoop-er) can sure enough hand it off. If you can’t run the football, you’re not going to be able to throw the football, because people are just going to sit back and wait on you,” Dollar explained.

Tanner McGehee is back at running back. He led the team with almost 500 yards rushing and seven rushing touch-downs last season. He’ll have some help, including the insertion of Joby Allen in short yardage situations. Also, Dollar will be trying the explosive Rey-gan Martin at running back because he is “the fastest player on the team and needs to touch the ball more.”

“All of our kids can catch the ball. Riley can catch the ball. The other teams also know that Riley can catch the ball,”

said Dollar. “So we have to be a little more creative in what we’re trying to do. Cody Forell has great hands. Pfleider has great hands, Reygan has great hands. Tanner did a good job running the foot-ball the other night. We just have to see what the defense is going to give us, who they are trying to take away, and then make them pay for it. Because all of those kids can have a big game. We just have to be smart enough as coaches to get the ball to the right people at the right time.”

Last season the Goldbugs rushed for an average of just 66 yards a game.

“The kids who are playing running back have to get used to seeing where the running lanes are, and that doesn’t happen overnight,” Dollar said. “As they get more comfortable knowing where the running lanes are going to be, then we will be able to run the football a lot better.”

The biggest need on offense is find-ing the right combination of interior linemen and expanding the depth of available linemen — both offensively and defensively.

“We have two kids that have some

size that are playing quite a bit, but they can’t be on the field all the time,” Dollar explained. “I think we are quicker than we are big. We’re trying to figure out ways to keep players fresh so that they will be ready to go in the fourth quarter. We need some younger players to step up, to be able to go in and give us a se-ries of five or six plays.

“Defensively, we’ve put Kyler Free-man and Casey Hoover at the same spot so they can spell each other. We need someone else to step up at defensive end, because both of those guys are starting on offense and we need a third one who can rotate and spell one of those guys every once and a while. That’s basically where we’re trying to get to right now.”

A look at the defenseThe new coach is still learning who

can do what defensively, but eight re-turning starters helps.

“We have issues with size, but we have a little quickness. We’re till trying to figure out what best suits the kind of players we have,” Dollar said.

The secondary is pretty set, but changes are still coming up front.

“We’re trying to increase our speed defensively by looking at some differ-ent options up front,” said Dollar. “Our two defensive ends (Brandon Ellis and Shane Murrow) are quick, but not very big. So we’ve got to put them in situa-tions where they don’t have to be very big. That means they have to be mov-ing so big tackles can’t lock onto them. We’re going to utilize their strengths to help them be better players.”

Strengths and weaknessesWithout a doubt, the team’s biggest

strength is its experience. Returnees are plentiful, and team speed is good. The starters will be solid just about every-where, but depth can always be a prob-lem.

“We’re a little thin in the line,” said Dollar. “But, if some of the other kids come through for us, we’ll be okay.”

Casey Hoover is a move-in who has helped the line. Brannon Louthan didn’t play last season, but he has looked good in the line as well. Having such play-ers step up takes time. It will be critical when district games begin.

Even with the starters, the offense’s

timing needs to improve. The return game should be exciting with Martin returning the ball. He also punts, while Chance Davis is expected to kick extra points and medium range field goals.

Tough scheduleRealignment has brought Newkirk

and Pawnee into the district, while Oklahoma Christian School and Watonga have departed. The rest of the district foes remain unchanged. However, some tough non-district teams will be new.

The Goldbug’s season opener will be at home against Class A’s Thomas-Fay-Custer, a powerhouse that is 19-1 over the past two regular seasons. Their second game is at Class A Morrison, a district’s favorite after losing just two district games in the past two years. Game three is at 2A Hobart, a team Alva has played recently. The final non-disrict opponent is 2A Dibble, which was 8-5 last season and went deep into the play-offs.

Winning the state championship. That’s a tall order, especially with Hennessey still in District 2A-1. Alva gave the Eagles all they wanted before losing 14-6 last season, however. The district championship may come down to the Goldbugs’ final regular season game with the Eagles on Nov. 1. But Dollar knows you don’t have to win the district to win the state championship. For him, it’s the end results that count.

By Roger McKenzieLast year, the Alva Middle School

suffered a tough season, losing all but one of their football games. This season has increased the size of the team and brought a new enthusiasm from both the players and the coaches.

“We’re going to improve,” said a con-fident Brandon Bookout, in his third year as the head coach.

Ten players return from a year ago. Six new eighth grade players and 20 sev-enth graders have swelled the squad’s size to 26. More may be coming.

The young Goldbugs get a late start compared to high school football teams. Aug. 25 was their second practice, so the coaches are still very early in evaluating the players.

“There are a lot of new faces. We’re excited,” said Coach Jeff Levetzow, who has been coaching at AMS since 1993. “The kids are picking up the offense quickly.”

Alva Middle School football will look a lot like Alva High School football — at a lower level of skill. Bookout, who is helping coach the high school team, will try to run similar plays and schemes with

Alva Middle School big in numbers, looking to improve

the middle schoolers to help give them a head start when they transition to high school.

“We’re going to give them as much exposure as we can,” Bookout said.

That won’t always be easy with 26 players, but the coach mentioned some additional opportunities to play may come around. If an opponent has a B-team, then the team could play two games — one for the A-team and one for the B-team. Fifth quarters for giving backups more playing time may also be an option.

By Roger McKenzieCherokee didn’t repeat their state

Class B championship last season. They did go to the play-offs and finished with an 8-3 season. That would be very satisfactory for most coaches, but this writer suspects that Coach Bryce Schanbacher wants more.

He may get it this year, but he won’t be able to boast of a Class B Gold Ball. That’s because the fates came together with the OSSAA to drop down the Chiefs to Class C for this year and the next. That’s likely to be just a two-year detour, as the Chiefs are growing again.

Coach Schanbacher has to like the 19 newcomers (17 freshmen and two sophomores) coming in to start a new foundation for coming years. They join 18 returnees from last year, giving the coaching staff a lot to choose from.

It all starts with five returning senior starters. Two of them, Josh Argraves on offense and Landon Schanbacher on defense, will be keys to the Chiefs success. But sophomore Tanner Bowman, who will quarterback the offense, and junior Alex Castro, who

Chiefs ready to roll again — in new class and district

plays linebacker on defense, will also be key players.

The other senior leaders are Grant Dewitt who, at center, has one of the most important jobs on the team, along with Michael Lucas (G/DL), and Austin Huckabee (WR/DB).

Cherokee’s drop to Class C doesn’t give them an automatic district championship, even though they have

been installed as the favorites. The Chiefs are in District 3, the home of Deer Creek-Lamont, which went deep in the play-offs last season, and perennial powerhouse, Timberlake. Those teams are picked second and third.

Coach Schanbacher has confidence in his experienced defense, with

Schanbacher and Castro at linebackers and a speedy secondary. The Chiefs will mostly play a base defense, with emphasis on individual players assigned to stop the other team’s offensive threats

The up-tempo (often no huddle) offense will generally operate from a spread formation, with some more traditional I-formation plays mixed in. Quarterback Bowman is a good runner, as is Argraves. The Chiefs will take what’s given, but will try to run first, and then pass. Bowman has some good receivers, and though just a sophomore, he’s quickly improving as a passer.

The offensive line is not as large as in past years, but is more mobile. Schanbacher said they will need to “get more aggressive.”

One area of concern is at punter. Last year’s punter is gone, and the coaching staff is looking for a replacement.

The Chiefs are ranked in the top 10 by just about everybody, and as high as third according to one source. They could finish the year even higher. The Oct. 18 Senior Night game in Cherokee with DCLA will probably decide who wins district and set the tone for the Chiefs’ play-off run.

By Roger McKenzieNormally, Timberlake reloads rather

than rebuilds. This is not a normal year, however. Last year, the Tigers finished 9-3, after losing in the second round of the Class C play-offs. They should

make the play-offs again, but if they advance as far as they did last year, their accomplishment will be even greater because this is a rebuilding year.

The Tigers suffered heavy losses to graduation. Seven seniors, who took the

bulk of playing time on both offense and defense, are gone. Senior Brock Buller is the one returning starter, and will start again at offensive guard and on the defensive line.

Coach Brian Severin has led the Tigers for 18 years. This will be his 19th season at the helm. His record is 139-68. He and his staff of veterans — Garret Powell, Nate Ross, Chad Greb, and second year assistant, Tyler Severin — will be working with a lot of young, mostly inexperienced players, at least at the varsity level.

With the exception of Buller and junior Braden Seaman, most of the starters this season will be starting regularly for the first time. With 23 players, 12 of them new, Severin will be using a lot of young players. He is planning to keep his junior varsity program in place, though, so getting playing time should not be a problem for

Big losses hurt Timberlake’s chances to go far this year

those young players relegated to backup roles.

“We plan on trying to do what we’ve been doing,” said Severin.

That means a spread, hurry-up offense that skips the huddle. There will be a lot of offensive formations, all designed to move the ball quickly up the field, with the emphasis on throwing first, then running.

Freshman Braden Buller will have the daunting task of trying to replace quarterback Coy Trout. His backup will be Seaman. A variety of players are being tried at tailback and fullback, including speedy junior Jacob Henderson and sophomores Braden Robinson, Adrian Carson and Layne Fleming.

Filling out the line on both offense and defense is still being worked out. Right now, the defense is ahead of the offense, with Buller at defensive end and Adrian Carson at middle linebacker providing the defensive leadership.

It’s going to to be a learning experience,” Severin admitted. “We expect to play hard and uphold the tradition here.”

That tradition has resulted in winning an average of over 10 games a year for the past five years.

travel when they face Cherokee on Oct. 18, they will be putting on the miles for their away game with new district member Prue. Next year, they will travel even further to play Bluejacket and Bartlesville Wesleyan in district games.

Cherokee has been installed as the

district’s pre-season favorite, with Deer Creek-Lamont, which went 10-1 last year, second. Timberlake is third.

The Tigers should definitely make the play-offs, but they’ll have to overcome their youth and inexperience to do better than last season.

By Roger McKenzieLow numbers played a big role in

last year’s sub-par performance by Waynoka. Unfortunately, they may have the same effect this season, a prospect that Coach Scott Kysar ap-proaches with the resignation that such cycles do occur in small schools.

The Railroaders have fielded win-ning teams for years.

“I can count on one hand how many losing seasons we’ve had since 1978. Not very many people can say that,” said Kysar.

He should know. He’s been the head coach at Waynoka since 1978. That makes this season his 35th at the helm of the Railroaders.

This year’s team started out with 17 players. A move-out and an exist-ing non-football injury which will pre-vent another player from participating

Waynoka’s Kysar wants team to get better each week

brings the roster down to just 15 play-ers. That’s still up from last year’s to-tal of 12.

The small number includes seven returnees, but not all of those were regular starters. One that was, and who will anchor the offensive and defensive lines, is Mark Alvarado, the team’s only senior, and its biggest player at 6’2” and 340 pounds.

Working at quarterback will be ei-ther sophomore Josiah Darr or fresh-man Logan Meriwether, or a com-bination of the two. The rest of the positions on offense and defense are still being evaluated.

Coach Kysar calls it “mix and match.” Kelby Reed and Terrance Long, both juniors, probably have a head start at the center and wide re-ceiver spots, respectively, because of their experience. The other juniors on

the team include Austin Long, Tyler Gavitt, and Jason Bence.

Everybody else, over half the ros-ter, are freshmen. Kysar and assistant coach Beau Westphal, who is back for a sixth year, are looking closely at ev-eryone.

Kysar summed up the process of mix and match.

“We try to find our eight best kids and put them on the field,” he ex-plained. “It will be interesting to see how these kids do. We are young. We just have to be patient and learn along the way.

Last year’s Railroaders finished 1-8 overall. But Kysar’s pride in that team is evident. He described those players as “a group of kids who came out and saved the program.”

From Page 30 Railroaders“We’ve been blessed with good

kids and good parents and strong sup-port from the community, and kids that go work hard. It’s made it fun and rewarding,” he said, while adding, “It you stay long enough in a little school, you are going to find ‘down’ years.

This year is likely to be like last year, with the team struggling to over-come youth and inexperience. The Railroaders play in the tough C-1 dis-trict. It includes powerhouses Shat-tuck and Forgan. Balko and Buffalo also got good words from Kysar. The district’s top four teams will advance.

The Railroaders are enthusiastic and hopeful of grabbing one of the four district spots that advance to the play-offs. The odds are against them, however.

“We’re not very big, but we never have been. We’ve never been blessed by those big, beefy kids up front (with this year’s exception of Alvarado). We’ve just had average kids that work hard. That’s the way it is this year, too,” said Kysar.

He described the team’s speed as average, not outstanding. But he em-phasized that his team this year is not slow. What the team does have is a strong work ethic.

“Hard work will overcome talent almost 100 percent of the time,” said Kysar. “We just take pride in being a blue collar bunch of kids who will go out and work hard and try to get bet-ter every day. That’s all I can ask of them.”

Getting better every week is the team’s main goal.

“We’re not worried about wins and losses,” Kysar summed up. “We just need to do the little things on the field and in the classroom, and those things will work themselves out.”

Derived from the English game of rugby, American football was started in 1879 with rules instituted by Walter Camp, player and coach at Yale Univer-sity.

Walter Camp was born April 17, 1859, in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended Yale from 1876 to 1882, where he studied medicine and business. Wal-ter Camp was an author, athletic director, chairman of the board of the New Ha-ven Clock Company, and director of the Peck Brothers Company. He was gen-eral athletic director and head advisory football coach at Yale University from 1888-1914, and chairman of the Yale football committee from 1888-1912. Camp played football at Yale and helped evolve the rules of the game away from

Rugby and Soccer rules into the rules of American Football as we know them to-day.

One precursor to Walter Camp’s in-fluence was William Ebb Ellis, a stu-dent at the Rugby School in England. In 1823, Ellis was the first person noted for picking up the ball during the soccer game and running with it, thereby break-ing and changing the rules. In 1876, at the Massosoit convention, the the first attempts at writing down the rules of American football were made. Walter Camp edited every American Football rulebook until his death in 1925.

Walter Camp contibuted the follow-ing changes from Rugby and Soccer to American football:

• one side retained undisputed pos-

session of the ball, until that side gives up the ball as a result of its own viola-tions

• the line of scrimmage• 11 on a team instead of 15• created the quarter-back and center

positions• forward pass• standardized the scoring system,

numerical scoring• created the safety, interference,

penalties, and the neutral zone• tackling as low as the knee was per-

mitted - 1888• a touchdown increased in value to

six points and field goals went down to three points - 1912

The NFL or the National Football League, was formed in 1920.

American football was started in 1879

By Roger McKenzieLast season, the Medicine Lodge In-

dians were just 4-6 as a 3-A team, but that record doesn’t reveal just how good the Indians were. Of the six losses (includ-ing one play-off game), only two were by margins of more than a touchdown. Three of those losses were decided by three points or less; and that’s against some opponents who have since been moved up to 4-A.

The Indians, however, will be play-ing opponents closer in size this season, because they have been moved down to 2-A, where they will play in District 5 with Ellinwood, Inman, LaCrosse, and Sterling.

Gone are 11 seniors from a year ago. The biggest losses were the heart of the defense — middle linebackers Jake Beecher and Kelvin Shinliver. Shinliv-er, also a tight end on offense, was the team’s leading receiver; and Beecher was the team’s leading rusher with over 750 yards gained at running back. Also gone from the offense are three of the team’s starting offensive linemen and two wide receivers.

Back to lead the Indians for a second year is Coach Faron Kraft. His return is

Coaching continuity, experience, senior leadership should make Indians better this season

a big plus. It means continuity and fa-miliarity for the 14 returning players this season. That certainly will help make things run smoother as Coach Kraft and his two new assistants, Josh Ybarra and Michael Stull, are rebuilding the Indians.

While the seniors lost will be hard to replace, the coaches have a lot to work with, including 14 seniors. Eight of those seniors return, while six are new. Of the 14 returnees, eight are lettermen who all started at one point or another. There are also 18 newcomers, including 11 fresh-men.

Coach Kraft admitted there are ques-tion marks before the season gets un-derway: on offense - a fullback, wide receiver, an offensive line spot, and a safety; on defense - a defensive end, and a cornerback still have to be decided. The kicking game needs solidified as well.

OffenseQuarterback Bryan Hellman is gone

from a year ago, but junior Scott Beecher (5’10”, 150) had a few starts of his own as a sophomore and is a solid quarter-back. He’s fast and can run the option. The Indians will run first, but Kraft will have the team throwing more this season because of Beecher’s arm.

He should have time to throw because of his running ability, and because the of-fensive line, which returns mostly intact, did a good job of pass blocking last year. Play-action passes will predominate.

Tailback is in good shape with the return of senior Bryant Wornkey, who started along with Jake Beecher last sea-son. Wornkey (5’11”, 180) is also a good receiver and accounted for almost 600 yards rushing and receiving. As of now, there is no firm decision on fullback. Re-turning senior Jimmy Horn and a new senior, Russell Pietz, are battling to win that spot in the offense.

Tight end belongs to Lakin Leibst, a senior who is a tall (6’2”) target and a good blocker. He is moving over from last year’s wide receiver spot. Wide re-ceiver is another question mark, but se-nior returnee Nathan Liebham gets the early nod on wide receiver spot, while Michael McLemore and Tyler Lynch are contending for the other receiver posi-tion.

The offensive and defensive lines are in good shape. Senior Logan Bertholf (5’10”, 175) returns at center. Another

From Page 38 Indianssenior returning starter, Tyler Small, gets one guard spot. Despite his name, he’s the team’s biggest (6’1”, 270) and best lineman, according to Kraft. Another big man, Cole Patton (6’2”, 245) has the nod at the other guard spot. Despite being a senior, Patton did not play last season.

Senior David Miller, a backup last year, will start at one offensive tackle. Returnees Scott Angell, a junior and the tallest player on the team at 6’9”, and Eric Fischer, a sophomore, will both see action at the other tackle spot.

DefenseMedicine Lodge will run a 4-4 de-

fense. Small anchors the line. Kraft de-scribes him as a “beast” — one of the best defensive linemen in the Central Plains Conference. Patton will join him on the inside, while Angell will take one end and the other is being shared at the moment by returnees Brian Blosser, a senior, and Aaron Woodward, a sopho-more.

The team’s starting linebackers all got experience playing last year. On the inside are Logan Bertholf and David Miller, who were backups last year. At one outside linebacker spot is a return-ing starter, Wornkey, while the other out-side linebacker is Liebst, who because of his aggressiveness, has moved over MEDICINE LODGE COACHES--Coaching the Indians for 2012 are, from the

from free safety where he started some games last year.

The defensive secondary is in flux. Nathan Liebham, who is started about half of last season at cornerback, is one starter. The other cornerback remains a big question mark, Kraft said.

At safety is Scott Beecher. He doesn’t have a lot of experience there, but is fast. He saw some action at outside lineback-er last season.

Season outlookLaCrosse, which reached the state

championship game last season, has be considered the district favorite, but Kraft says Sterling and Medicine Lodge will make things interesting. Medicine Lodge could even challenge for the dis-trict title when they meet LaCrosse in the last regular season game at Medicine Lodge on Oct. 25. Even if the Indians don’t win, they could be play-off bound.

By Roger McKenzieFor the first time in over two decades,

James Johnston won’t be on the sidelines coaching for South Barber. But the 2012 Chieftains aren’t being left in the lurch. The leader on the sidelines is familiar to just about every South Barber football player. That’s because Coach Tim Rector has been coaching the junior high foot-ball team for the past five years. In fact, his first seventh grade players are now his seniors.

“The players are very used to me. It has been an easy transition,” he said.

Despite the common familiarity, Coach Rector plans some changes in the football program — a more spread out offense, a faster pace.

“We’ll run first, but we’ll definitely pass the ball,” the coach said.

And he plans on some of his younger players stepping up and playing more.

Gone are five seniors from last year’s bi-district champions, including All-Dis-trict running back and Defensive MVP (linebacker) Blake Wagenbach, All-Dis-trict quarterback Michah Polson, and Di-vision II East All-Star end Luke Yearout.

Rector and returning assistant coach Matt Cantrell will have four seniors and

New coach, new offense, new enthusiasm at South Barber

a total of 14 returnees back from last sea-son’s 8-3 team to lay the foundation for another run in the play-offs. And, he’ll have three newcomers to help provide more depth on both sides of the line.

A look at the offenseSophomore Peyton Yandel is one of

the young players Rector is asking to step up. He’ll replace the departed Polson. He saw some action last year and is very ath-letic. Rector called him a dual threat for his ability to run and throw. He’s also the team’s kicker.

Another young player asked to step up is sophomore Dillon Allison at tail-back. Like Yandell, Allison is on the small side, but that may play to his ad-vantage. According to Rector, Allison is small enough to hide behind his block-ers, and then pop out for yardage. He described the tailback as “very gifted at finding the hole (to run through).”

An experienced Conner Black is the tight end. The senior is a big, strong play-er who moves well, blocks well, and can catch. He’s also an All-League punter. Black will be sharing his wisdom and experience with Peyton Reeves, a sopho-more, who’ll also see action at tight end, as well as the offensive line.

Kale Girty, a junior, is a wide receiv-er who has good hands. He runs “great” routes, according to his coach.

Senior Jace Thurman will be the slot receiver. The returning starter is experi-enced and fast — the second fastest play-er on the team. He ‘s also worked hard this summer to improve even more.

Guards Lane Hess and Eli Corino are both returning starters. Hess is a senior, and Corino got some starts late last sea-son as a sophomore. Rector described them as big, strong players who can move.

Center is the big question mark on of-fense. Rector will be trying several peo-ple here. It’s an important position, and he wants to get it right.

The South Barber offense will feature a lot of looks and misdirection. Traps, counters, veer and option plays will all be a part of the Rector offense. He also plans to use hurry-up things, which means some no huddle trickery.

“Our quickness and speed are advan-tages,” the coach said. “We want to use our athleticism to our advantage.”

At the time of my interview with Coach Rector (Aug. 15), he admitted, “We haven’t practiced defense much.”

That, I’m sure, has changed. Rector wasn’t sure, at the time, just what kind of defensive lineup he would favor. The im-portant thing, however, is that six start-ers return on defense. Thurman, Girty, Black, Hess, Corino, and Taylor Donald-son (a junior) provide a solid foundation for whatever sets are used.

Caldwell and South Barber are the favorites. The Chieftains and their new coach are hungry for a chance to go fur-ther in the play-offs. They should get the chance, but they can’t afford to take any-thing for granted.

“I’m encouraged. I feel really good,” said Rector. “The team has worked really hard in practice, especially on their con-ditioning because of our up-tempo game. They haven’t let me down.”
