Do you know how many phytochemicals you need to eat to be healthy? Do you have to know what they are in order to eat well? Thankfully, no. Make it look good! Enticing bowls

of fruits and vegies last days in

the fridge, and provide a quick

snack for growing kids. Give the

bowl a theme;

• Tree fruit bowl – plums, peaches,

cherries, and nectarines

• Cube the melon – ready to eat.

• Berries – a bowl full of berries

in different colors.

• Carrots – Baby carrots in a bowl

get eaten fast!

• Freeze grapes for a yummy,

quick snack or dessert.

• Whip up fruit smoothies with

frozen fruits, a bit of milk, some

ice cubes for thickening and a

splash of flavored extract.

• Bananas and berries on morning

cereal!

Soups can pack a vegetable punch:

pumpkins, sweet potatoes, yams,

squash, carrots, and peppers make

a delicious fall and winter bisque.

Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower

are some of the cancer fighting

super heroes of the vegie world.

You can:

• Chop broccoli and add it to

salads, soups, pasta, and

casseroles.

• Add shredded red and green

cabbage to shredded carrots add

an oil-free dressing for a good

cole slaw.

• Add smashed, cooked

cauliflower to your favorite

mashed potato recipe.

Use Romaine lettuce leaves

instead of bread to wrap your

sandwich fillings

Eat a huge salad every day.

Pack fresh fruit to take with you

every day.

Packing More Family Nutrients into your Family’s diet: A How-To Guide

Only 30 percent of people 65

and older eat five or more daily

servings of fruits and vegetables –

the minimum amount recom -

mended for good nutrition.

Cook vegetarian. At least once

every week, skip the meat and try

a new vegetarian recipe for dinner.

Snack on produce. Try snacking on

fresh or dried fruit, carrot and bell

pepper strips with a low-fat dip, or

baked chips with salsa.

Stuff an omelet with extra

vegetables, or add them to

scrambled eggs.

Put fruits and vegetables out

on the counter or in a prominent

position in the refrigerator, so that

you’ll be more likely to eat them.

Add fruits and vegetables to

every meal.

Yes. There are ways to get your family to eat more fruits and vegetables. Some are a bit sneaky,
