2012 Corolla vs. 2012 Chevrolet Cruze
Top Corolla Advantages Over Cruze
While the Chevrolet Cruze is relatively new to the U.S. market, General Motors has actually been selling the car in markets such as Asia, Europe and Africa since 2009, so it’s not as new as it seems. Here, the Cruze replaces the Chevrolet Cobalt with a larger, more powerful and more refined vehicle that promises to be a more formidable competitor for Toyota’s venerable Corolla.
This Edge compares the two vehicles and highlights Corolla’s many strong points. And after reviewing the data, you will come to understand why Corolla has been the best-selling subcompact in America for the last nine years.
Look inside for detailed info about this summary, important safety information and disclaimers.
•Proven engine design Corolla has an engine that has been refined and improved over decades. Cruze uses a much smaller engine that requires turbocharging to achieve comparable performance. Corolla’s bigger engine is less complex and doesn’t suffer from turbo lag.
COmfOrT And COnvenienCeCorolla drivers and passengers will appreciate its well-designed interior and generous slate of comfort and convenience features.
•Ample interior room Cruze is bigger on the outside, but Corolla still has the advantage in several key measurements on the inside. This contributes to passenger comfort in both the front and rear seats.
•Available navigation and entune™ On the Chevy Cruze, GPS navigation is only offered on the far more expensive models. And Cruze doesn’t offer a feature like Entune™ at any price. And this means Cruze drivers won’t have three years of complimentary smartphone access to apps like Bing™, iHeartRadio, MovieTickets.com, Open Table® and Pandora®—or data services like fuel guide, sports scores, stocks, traffic and weather.
exCePTiOnAl vAlueAt a time when every dollar counts, Corolla delivers—at the point of purchase and over the long haul.
•lower cost at purchase Corolla LE’s MSRP1 runs about $1,500 less than that of the Cruze 1LT, leaving real money in the customer’s pocket.
•lower cost down the road Based on 2011 data for both vehicles, Intellichoice predicts that Corolla LE could have a much lower five-year ownership cost when compared with Cruze 1LT—thousands less.
•Complimentary maintenance program It’s a simple sales pitch: Corolla has one, and Cruze doesn’t. Toyota Care is a real win for owners.
effiCienT PerfOrmAnCeCorolla’s tried-and-true normally aspirated powertrain offers an optimum balance of performance and efficiency.
•Better power-to-weight ratio Cruze’s slight edge in horsepower is more than offset by its 300 pounds of additional weight. Weight is the enemy of efficiency and performance.

The Cruze is offered in five grades. The entry-level LS is powered by a normally aspirated 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, while all other models are available with the turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder. Both power plants generate comparable horsepower, but the turbo makes 25 lb.-ft. more torque at a low 1,850 rpm.
Also of note: The ECO model comes fitted with body panels that, among other features, contribute to the top EPA fuel economy rating in the Cruze line.
Here’s a look at some of the major features in the range.

Lower five-year Ownership Cost
When considering things like depreciation, maintenance, repairs and fuel, IntelliChoice 2 estimates that Corolla will be more than $3,000 less expensive to own than Cruze over five years of ownership. The most recent data are for 2011 models, but Corolla’s advantage may get even better because Cruze prices have gone up significantly for 2012.
Lower cost at purchase
Both models come well equipped in standard configuration, including automatic transmission. But Corolla LE’s many comfort and convenience features are offered at a lower MSRP1 than Cruze 1LT. This means real money in the customer’s pocket at the time of purchase.
