2012 BIG EAST FOOTBALL PREVIEW

Entering its 22nd season as a football-playing entity in 2012, The BIG EAST Conference is poised, among a sea of change in the college football world, to continue as one of the nation’s top conferences.

By any objective metric, the BIG EAST has been a success story on the football field. The conference has regularly put its teams in position for the Bowl Championship Series National Championship while amassing an impressive head-to-head record against its counterparts.

The BIG EAST football membership in 2012 will consist of the University of Cincinnati, the University of Connecticut, the University of Louisville, the University of Pittsburgh, Rutgers University, the University of South Florida, Syracuse University and Temple University.

The BIG EAST membership will have a new look in 2013 as the conference becomes the first truly national major college football league. That year, the league will welcome Boise State University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Houston, the University of Memphis, San Diego State University and Southern Methodist University to its football ranks. The U.S. Naval Academy will join the BIG EAST in 2015.

Eight of the schools that will comprise the future membership of the BIG EAST finished in the top 25 of the final BCS standings at least once since 2006, with a combined 14 top-25 finishes by those schools in that six-year span.

That kind of success underscores the BIG EAST’s recent history as one of the deepest conferences in college football. Every BIG EAST team won at least five games in 2011 – the first time since 1905 that a major college football conference could make that claim. The BIG EAST is the only Division I conference in which each of its members played in at least one bowl game in the past two seasons. The BIG EAST will likewise be the only league in which each team has at least one bowl win in the last four years.

The BIG EAST has always been strategic in its growth, with a goal of showcasing high-quality teams in highly populated markets. The conference’s forthcoming membership changes will further enhance that strategy by placing at least one BIG EAST school in all four time zones across the continental United States. All told, the BIG EAST football membership will be centered in 11 states, 12 of the top 50 Nielsen media markets and six of the top 25 media markets. The conference will have a television households reach of 24.3 million – by far the largest number in college football.

The BIG EAST has been a charter member of each of the major bowl agreements with the major conferences, beginning with the Bowl Coalition in 1992, followed by the Bowl Alliance in 1995 and the Bowl Championship Series in 1998. Eight times in the league’s 21 seasons, a BIG EAST squad has played for a claim to the national crown in a postseason game. The conference has produced two national

championship teams and has seen three teams finish as the No. 2-ranked team nationally.

The 2012 season will mark the fifth year of a six-year arrangement with ESPN that gives the BIG EAST national exposure on ABC television and the ESPN family of networks. ESPN, ESPN2 or ABC will carry a minimum of 19 BIG EAST home games each season, marking the highest guaranteed total on ESPN and ABC in league history. Championship Week in December includes three BIG EAST games on either ABC, ESPN or ESPN2. At least four BIG EAST games are featured on ESPN’s Thursday-night package each year.

In addition, ESPN Regional Television will continue to produce and distribute its BIG EAST Network package to a nationally syndicated audience, reaching more than 30 million homes. Sportsnet New York (SNY) will carry more than 20 BIG EAST Network games, providing a reach of more than 13 million homes alone. A minimum of five home games will be carried on ESPNU.

Extensive television exposure and the BIG EAST have been synonymous terms. The league established its own regional football television package in 1991 before it had played a game. The BIG EAST Television Network immediately was the largest regional college football network in the country.

The BIG EAST has always aligned itself with prestigious bowl games. The league is one of the

original founders of the Bowl Championship Series and continues to be one of only six conferences that receives an automatic annual bid in the existing agreement.

The BIG EAST Conference champion earns the league’s automatic BCS bid. The BCS – which enters its 15th season in 2012-13 – is a five-game arrangement for postseason college football that is designed to match the two top-rated teams in a national championship game and to create exciting and competitive matchups between eight other highly regarded teams in four other BCS games.

If the BIG EAST champion finishes No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings, that team earns a spot in the BCS National Championship Game. Otherwise, the league champion will compete in one of the four remaining BCS bowl games – the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Discover Orange Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl or the Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO. Each bowl hosts two games once every four years - its traditional game plus the National Championship Game approximately one week later.

The BIG EAST unveiled an enhanced collection of bowl partnerships beginning in 2010 that matches conference teams against opponents from the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12 Conference, the Southeastern Conference and Conference USA.

The Champs Sports Bowl has the first selection of BIG EAST teams after the conference’s BCS representative is determined. The Atlantic Coast Conference will provide the opposition for the Champs Sports Bowl, which is played in Orlando, Fla.

The BIG EAST enters its 11th year as a partner with the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C. Played in Bank of America Stadium, the Belk Bowl will select its BIG EAST participant after the Champs Sports Bowl with the ACC again providing the opponent.

The BIG EAST and the Big 12 conferences partnered for a new bowl game in 2010 as the New Era Pinstripe Bowl was played for the first time at Yankee Stadium in New York City. The game was an immediate success and the New Era Pinstripe Bowl is now firmly entrenched into New York’s festivities surrounding New Year’s Day. In the event that the Big 12 is unable to send an eligible team to the New Era Pinstripe Bowl, Notre Dame could step in as the BIG EAST team’s opponent.

A BIG EAST representative will face either an opponent from the Southeastern Conference or the Conference USA champion as part of a four-year arrangement with the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala., and the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The BIG EAST will send a team to one of those bowl games in each year of the deal. The BIG EAST has been a partner with the BBVA Compass Bowl since 2006 and has sent a number of teams to the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in recent years.

The 2012 season will mark the fifth year of the BIG EAST’s partnership with the Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl pairs the BIG EAST representative against an opponent from Conference USA.

The enhanced lineup gives BIG EAST teams access to at least six postseason games each year in some of the most accessible and desirable destinations in college football.

The BIG EAST is Doing Big Things The BIG EAST has been a leader in major college football since the

formation of the football conference in 1991. The league has produced two national championship teams and three national runners-up.

BIG EAST teams have gone 7-7 all-time in Bowl Championship Series games since the formation of the BCS in 1999. The BIG EAST is one of just five conferences (along with the Mountain West, SEC, WAC and Pac-12) with at least a .500 record in BCS games.

In the BCS era, the BIG EAST has the best overall bowl record of any Bowl Subdivision conference. The BIG EAST is 43-27 (.614) in bowl games since the 1998-99 season.

A BIG EAST team has finished among the top eight in the final Associated Press poll four times in the past seven years.

All eight of the BIG EAST’s 2012 members have played in at least one bowl game in the past two years. The BIG EAST is the only league in the nation in which every member has reached the postseason in the past two seasons.

Since 2006, the BIG EAST has had two teams (Louisville, Cincinnati) finish the season with at least 12 wins. In the 2013 season, the BIG EAST will include teams that have produced eight 12-win seasons since 2006 (five by Boise State, one each by Cincinnati, Louisville and Houston).

When the BIG EAST last reconfigured, for the 2005 season, the three incoming members were able to reach unprecedented heights. Cincinnati, Louisville and USF have all achieved rankings in the top three of the BCS standings since joining the BIG EAST.

The BIG EAST’s incoming members bring a combination of proven achievement and unlimited potential.

Boise State has won two BCS bowl games since 2007 and has finished in the top 12 in the final BCS standings six times since 2004.

UCF finished No. 25 in the final 2010 BCS standings, has the second-largest undergraduate enrollment in the country and is located in the nation’s No. 19 media market.

Houston won 13 games last season, was ranked No. 19 in the final BCS standings and is situated in the nation’s 10th-largest media market.

Memphis played in five bowl games in six years between 2003 and 2008 and is located in a top-50 media market.

navy, which will join the BIG EAST in 2015, played in a bowl game in eight consecutive years from 2003-10.

San Diego State has played in back-to-back bowl games, is located in a rich recruiting area, plays in an NFL stadium and is part of the 28th-ranked media market.

SMU has played in a bowl game in each of the past three seasons, is located in the nation’s No. 5 media market and is enjoying a football resurgence.

temple has averaged nearly nine wins in the past three years, is in a top-five media market, plays in an NFL stadium and has reached the postseason in two of the last three years.

2011 STATISTICAL LEADERS

STORyLINESCincinnati has won at least a share of the BIG EAST title three times in the last four years.

The Bearcats will have to replace last year’s BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year — RB Isaiah Pead — and the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year — DT Derek Wolfe.

QB Munchie Legaux, who came off the bench last season, is expected to take over for Zach Collaros, a two-time All-BIG EAST selection.

Cincinnati returns three of its four starters in the defensive secondary, highlighted by SS Drew Frey, an All-BIG EAST First Team selection. Frey was second on the team in tackles and had two interceptions in the 2011 season.

STORyLINESConnecticut returns three quarterbacks who saw significant playing time in 2011, including Johnny McEntee and Scott McCummings, who both played in all 12 games.

RB Lyle McCombs rushed for 1,151 yards as a fresh-man last season — the fourth-highest total by a first-year player in BIG EAST history.

All-BIG EAST Second Team DE Trevardo Williams leads a defense that returns eight starters from last year. All three starting linebackers return.

The Huskies will miss the production of K David Teggart, who is the school’s career scoring leader. K Chad Christen, who has been the kickoff specialist for the past two seasons, is expected to take over as the placekicker.

QB Tino Sunseri has started Pittsburgh’s last 26 games behind center. He should benefit from the return of Pittsburgh’s top two receivers from last year — WR Devin Street and WR Mike Shanahan.

STORyLINESTemple, which competed as a BIG EAST member in football from 1991-2004, returns to the league as a football-playing member in 2012.

Temple has registered more wins in the past three seasons than in any three-year stretch in school history.

Temple ranked third nationally in scoring defense, (13.9 ppg) behind only Alabama and LSU — the two participants in last year’s BCS National Champion-ship Game. The Owls return five starters from that group.

QB Chris Coyer made four starts last season and was the Mid-American Conference leader in pass efficiency (177.4).

poLL eXpLAnAtion & ABoUt tHe BCS:To derive a team’s poll percentages in the Harris Interactive and USA Today polls, each team’s point total is divided by a maximum 2850 possible points in the Harris Interactive Poll and 1475 possible points in the USA Today Poll. Teams are assigned a point total for each of their respective computer poll rankings to determine the overall computer component. The highest and lowest ranking for each team is dropped, and the sum total of the remaining four rankings is divided by 100 (the maximum possible points). This figure produces a Computer Rankings Percentage. The six computer ranking providers are Anderson & Hester (A&H), Richard Billingsley (B), Colley Matrix (CM), Kenneth Massey (M), Jeff Sagarin (S) and Peter Wolfe (W). Each computer ranking accounts for schedule strength within its formula. The BCS Average is calculated by averaging the percent totals of the Harris Interactive and USA Today Polls, and Computer rankings. The highest BCS Average receives the No. 1 ranking, the second highest receives No. 2, and so forth.

The BCS is a five-game arrangement for post-season college football that is managed by the 11 Bowl Subdivision conferences and Notre Dame. Its purpose is to match the two top-ranked teams in the final BCS standings in a national championship game and to create competitive matchups in the four other BCS bowl games.
