Optimism is the key word for the Auburn University at Montgomery women’s soccer program heading into the 2012 season. Despite facing a variety of obstacles in 2011, the Warhawks fi nished 8-9-1 and fell in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. “Last year we dealt with some key injuries and had several players who were ineligible, so it created some hurdles that we as a team had to overcome,” third-year head coach Jamey Newsome said. “We also had a very challenging schedule, meaning our opponents did not do us any favors amidst that adversity. I could not have been prouder of the way we handled ourselves through those moments, and I think the way our team stepped up and the leaders that were developed will pay off for us this year.” AUM returns 12 players from last year’s team, including seven starters. The Warhawks also welcome nine newcomers to the program, which will give Newsome an added aspect to the team – depth. “I am extremely intrigued by the versatility that we have brought in this year,” Newsome said. “We have six or seven players who can play multiple positions, so we have a lot of options on the fi eld. The ability to play players at multiple positions allows me to be creative and excites me as a coach. We have been lacking depth and one of my goals in recruiting was to get players who have versatility. As a coach, I am chomping at the bit to see what these girls can do.” With a new season comes the loss of key players, as the Warhawks lost a pair of all-conference performers in Helga Franklinsdottir and Heather Welch, as well as starting defenders Asta Fridriksdottir and K.C. Hewitt. “Helga was a fi rst-team all-conference performer last year, despite missing the fi nal six games due to injury,” Newsome said. “That in itself tells you the quality of player she was. She had outstanding ability on the fi eld, but also brought great leadership to the team.”
“Heather was another key piece to our suc-cess during her tenure,” Newsome continued. ”She was a very steady player that earned all-conference honors and was another big part of our team that we need to replace.” “Asta was our center back for the last three years and was really an extension of me on the fi eld. I could always count on her to organize the backs and make sure we were in the right posi-tions. Her loss will also be a crucial spot to fi ll.” “K.C. was our other captain last year and was a four-year starter for the program. She knew what it took to win in our conference and really stepped up as a leader when we needed it.” Offsetting the loss of those four contributors, the Warhawks return starters at all four levels of the fi eld. AUM returns the most depth at the forward position, where seniors Margret Albertsdottir
and Karina Suetsugu are back, as well as junior Alexandra Sveinsdottir. The trio combined to score 17 goals and assist on 10 others. “Margret, Karina and Alex all saw a good number of minutes last year and we know they will continue to do a good job for us,” said Newsome. “Margret is one of the strongest players we have. She creates matchup prob-lems with her size and strength. She is very good as a target and come back and get the ball. She is very skilled around the goal and is a key option on all sets and corner kicks.” “Karina is quite possibly one of the most technical players in the conference. She can do some things with the ball that a lot of guys cannot do. She is very crafty and is a playmaker. Last year she didn’t score all of our goals, but she did a great job of helping to set them up.” “Alex is a slasher with good pace, who loves to attack people one-on-one. She joined us late last year, but with a year under her belt and a year in our system, I feel like she will be even more dangerous this year. With our added depth, we will be able to keep her fresh, which should really make her that much more effective.” Along with the three returners, the Warhawks have added a pair of new faces at the forward position. Sophomore Dagmar Gunnarsdottir and senior Haley Wil-liams will also compete for minutes up top. “Dagmar is fast, tall, aggressive and mean on the fi eld,” Newsome said. “She is a fi erce competitor and knows how to score goals. She strikes the ball extremely well. I have high hopes for her and I think can score a lot of goals for us.” “Haley just joined us from the basketball team and seems like a natural athlete. She came to try out and within a 30-minute span score two goals and was very active. She is extremely quick and is fearless on the fi eld. Her work ethic is un-matched.” In the midfi eld, the obvious loss is Franklinsdottir, but Newsome is encouraged by returners Krista Hagen and Kristin Karlsdottir, as well as several new faces at the position. “Krista was a rock for us last year,” said Newsome. “She is one of those steady players that constantly does the right thing. She is a blue-collar player and is the glue of our team. Krista is the kind of player that every coach loves having on their team.” “Kristin is a solid player that is very dependable. She is tough with the ball and tackles well. She has a great knowledge of the game.” Newsome mentioned sophomore Maren Heller as player who is capable of fi ll-
ing the role left by Franklinsdottir. “Maren has the potential to be a very special player,” said Newsome. “She is someone that I am looking to help fi ll the void left by Helga. She is a quality soccer player. She is skilled, athletic and experienced. I am hoping she will do great things this year.” He also feels Heller has all the tools to contend for all-conference and poten-tially All-American honors. “Just watching her (Heller) in practice this spring, she reads the game so well. Her speed of thought is two or three passes ahead of time. Technically, she is so clean. You can tell that she was brought up around the game. I also think her experiences will prove valuable to us from a leadership standpoint.” Also adding to the depth of the position are sophomores Maria Ros Arngrims-dottir and Eyrun Rakel Agnarsdottir. “Maria can play all three positions on the fi eld for us,” Newsome said. “I think she will be an important player in our midfi eld. Even though she will bounce around, she has the capability to be a very good player for us.” “Eyrun is very skilled and is a very quick player. I anticipate that she will help quite a bit in the midfi eld.” Combining depth and versatility, the Warhawks also have the option of playing senior Christine Kelly, sophomore Nicole Letford or freshmen Victoria Houston, Kendall McCardell, Arna Omarsdottir, Courtney Omodei or Ida Bjerklund at midfi eld. “Christine is a transfer from Columbus State and can play almost anywhere on the fi eld,” said Newsome. “She is a smart player and will contend for minutes at several positions this year.” “Nicole can play in the back, but can also play in the midfi eld,” Newsome said of Letford. “Her main position is center midfi eld, but will likely see action at several positions. She is a nice addition to our team.” “Victoria is an outside defender or midfi elder. She is a tested player from Scot-land who will certainly add to our depth at each position. Kendall is a true freshman who is very quick and a very good athlete. Arna is a transfer from Iceland who will more than likely be a center back. She is a strong player who makes good decisions. I expect her to contend for a starting spot this season. Courtney joins us from Australia and will see some action at center back. She will be in the mix for playing time this year. Ida can play either defender or midfi eld. She joins us from Norway and based on the information we received, will contend for a starting spot.” The stability on defense will come from seniors Inga Dis Juliusdottir and Melissa Ledesma. The duo combined to start 35 games last season, but Juliusdottir’s status is uncertain following an injury during summer. “Inga might be the most important defensive player we have coming back,” Newsome said. “She is a very intelligent player, who handles the ball well. She is tactically understands the game and has been here three years now, so she knows what we expect, knows what is needed and knows what it takes to be successful at this level.” “Melissa had a very good fi rst year here as an outside defender. She could be the best athlete on our entire team. She is agile, strong and a great one-on-one defender. I have incredibly high hopes for her and think she can be a dominant defender this year.” In addition, the Warhawks will rely on their versatility, as Karlsdottir, Kelly, Bjerklund, Omarsdottir, Houston, McCardell and Omodei will factor in the mix for playing time. In goal, AUM returns SSAC All-Freshman team member Holly Clarke, who posted 44 saves and allowed just 12 goals in 15 appearances last year. “Holly was a big surprise for us last season,” Newsome said. ”I knew she was a good player, but I was pleasantly surprised at how she came in and competed, ulti-mately earning a starting spot after just a couple games. I was also impressed with her level of communication and leadership in the back. It is rare to see a freshman step into that role and demand respect the way she did. I was very pleased with her performance in goal and I think she can put a claim in for the conference’s top goalkeeper this year. I have high hopes for her this season.” Additionally, the Warhawks added freshman Jim Guibor to provide depth at the position.“Jimi is coming from California and will be a true freshman. The level of play there is just outstanding. I am very pleased that we were able to bring her to AUM. I hope she will come in and compete, hopefully giving Holly a run for her money. There is nothing better than good competition.” With added depth and versatility, as well as the returning pieces from last season, Newsome feels 2012 could be a special season for the War-hawks. “Without actually seeing everyone play, I feel like we have the potential to return to the NAIA National Tournament,” Newsome added. “The players can feel that we are so close and that makes them hungry. I was very pleased with how our spring went this year. The girls were focused and worked very hard, and I feel they are going to be determined to have a good season. We had some positive moments last year, but it wasn’t up to our standards or the tradition of AUM women’s soccer.”

Jamey Newsome is in his second season as the head coach of the Auburn Mont-gomery women’s soccer program. Newsome fi nished his inaugural season at the helm of the team with a 12-6-1 overall record. Newsome led the team to a respectable fi nish last season, despite having to deal with the loss of four All-Americans from 2010. The Warhawks fi nished with a 7-4-1 record in the SSAC, good for fourth in the conference. Three players earned all-confer-ence honors and an additional three were named to the SSAC All-Academic team. Built on the strength of the returners from last year and a large group of newcomers, AUM enters 2012 receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll. In his fi rst season, Newsome continued the strong tradition of AUM team’s, helping the Warhawks to as high as a No. 13 ranking in the National Association for Intercol-legiate Athletics (NAIA) Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and had the team ranked in the top 25 for 10 consecutive weeks. AUM fi nished the season among the others receiving votes following a 0-0 tie to three-time defending national champion Lee University, in which it lost in the eighth round of penalty kicks. In addition to team success, several individuals fl ourished under Newsome’s leader-ship. Jana Yates was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, as well as a fi rst-team All-Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) performer last season. Yates, Daisy Burnfi eld, Amber Elam and Helga Franklinsdottir each earned SSAC All-West Divi-sion honors, while Susan Lotyczewski was named to the West Division All-Freshman team. The Warhawks also had six named to the SSAC All-Academic team, as well as one NAIA Scholar Athlete (Elam). Prior to being named the fi fth head coach of the women’s soccer team, Newsome was most recently at Georgia Southern University where he has spent three years as an assistant coach for the women’s team. While at GSU, Newsome assisted the head coach in various areas of coaching, recruiting and video analysis. Newsome began his collegiate coaching experience in 1999 as an assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where they fi nished 12-3-3 and ranked 16th nationally. While at Upstate, Newsome was primarily involved in recruiting, player training and scheduling. Newsome has also been involved with the Coweta Cannons Soccer Club in Newnan, Ga., as the technical director from 2001-03 and the director of coaching from 2003-04. Most recently, from 2005-07, he was the assistant director of the Darlington School Soccer Academy of Rome, Ga., where his duties included training, marketing, event planning and monitoring boarding students. Since 2006, Newsome has been involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP), both in Alabama and Georgia, where he helps in the development of rising soccer talent in each state. He was recently named to the Region III ODP staff, where he assists in the selection of the all-region team. In addition, he is also actively involved in club soccer within the Montgomery area. Newsome is currently the Director of Coaching for FC Torjager. He also holds the United States Soccer Federation “B” License and is a USSF “D & E” Coaching License Instructor. A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Newsome played collegiate soccer at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. There he was a four-year starter and received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1997. Newsome’s head coaching experience began in 1997, when he was the boys’ varsity soccer coach at Enka High School in Ashville, N.C. After a year he became the boy’s and girl’s varsity soccer coach at Madison High School in Marshall, N.C. where he remained until 1999. Newsome is married to the former Jennifer Schommer, and the couple has two daughters, Mary Ryan and Leah, and a cat, Moe.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITYA broad-based academic institution, Auburn University at Montgomery is organized into fi ve schools - Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences. The genesis of the institution came after a request from the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 and the fi rst classes were offered in 1969. Originally housed in several buildings downtown, 500 acres in east Montgomery were purchased in 1971 so the campus could move to a location where it could grow. In 1973, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accredited AUM as an operationally separate institution. The Auburn University Board of Trustees maintains re-sponsibility for governance of AUM.

Veres has been serving as chancellor since his appointment in May 2006. “I’m proud to be an AUM gradu-ate and the fi rst graduate of AUM to have the opportunity to serve the university as chancellor” says Veres.
For six years prior to becoming chancellor, Veres was executive direc-tor of AUM’s University Outreach, which conducts applied research and provides consulting services, includ-ing economic forecasting, equal employment opportunity and public policy formation. CHANCELLOR JOHN G. VERES III
2012 Auburn University at Montgomery Women’s Soccer 41
Steve Crotz is currently in his fi fth year as Athletics Director at Auburn Montgomery, after serving two stints as the interim athletic director in 2000 and 2007. During his tenure, AUM teams have fl ourished, programs established, and facilities improved. Student-athletes have also been a stalwart in the community and excelled in the classroom. Under his guidance, eight of AUM’s 10 sports have spent time in their respec-tive NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Polls and teams have won four national champion-ships. In addition, 158 student-athletes have earned All-Conference, All-Division or All-Freshman team honors, while 70 have garnered All-American honors. AUM has added a softball program, as well as men’s and women’s cross country programs, increasing its number of varsity sports to 10. The cross country team ran its fi rst meet in the Fall of 2011 and will compete in the Southern States Athletic Conference of the NAIA. Crotz has overseen several facility upgrades, including the renovation of the basketball gymnasium to include a section of 304 cushioned, chair-backed seats on the home side of the court, the building of a new state-of-the-art press box at the AUM Softball Complex and the re-surfacing of all 12 tennis courts at the AUM Tennis Complex. Upgrades to the Softball Complex will also include bleacher seating for more than 200 spectators directly behind home plate, restrooms, a concession stand, a press area and increased storage.
In the classroom, student-athletes have been equally impressive, as 135 athletes have earned All-Academic honors from the SSAC and 45 have been named NAIA Scholar Athletes. Three AUM student-athletes, women’s basketball standouts Haley McIntyre and Carlie Ain-sworth, and men’s basketball’s David Gal-lagher, have been named the SSAC Honor Student Athlete. Within the community, staff, coaches and student-athletes have logged better than 750 hours of service. Crotz has worked with the AUM administration to expand the athletic department staff to include a head and assistant softball coach and an athletic trainer. He has also spent the past two years serving as the chair of the Board of Athletic Directors within the Southern States Athletic Conference. For his efforts during the 2010-11 academic year, Crotz was selected the SSAC Athletic Director of the Year. Before focusing on administration, Crotz served 12 seasons as the head women’s basketball coach at Auburn Montgomery. Crotz compiled a record of 284-116 while at AUM, winning four regular season conference championships, two con-ference tournament titles, and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament 10 times. Crotz was a 10-time conference/region coach of the year and was named the Ikon/Women’s Basketball Coaches As-sociation National Coach of the Year following his team’s national runner-up fi nish for the 1999-00 season. Prior to AUM, Crotz spent fi ve years as athletic director and six years as head women’s basketball
coach at Lindenwood University. While at LU, Crotz earned 126 wins and led the Lady Lions to three consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearances. During his six years at the St. Charles, Mo., institution, he was named American Midwest Conference Coach-of-the-Year on four occasions. In October 2009, he was inducted into the Lindenwood Hall of Fame. Crotz also spent nine years at Brentwood High School overseeing the girl’s basketball program and winning 210 games. Five times during that span he led Brentwood to the Missouri State Tournament where they won the state tournament in 1985 and fi nished as the runners-up in 1986 and 1990. For his ef-forts, Crotz was named the Missouri High School Coach-of-the-Year in 1985. Crotz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Mis-souri in 1979 and his master’s degree in secondary education from Missouri-St. Louis in 1984. He and his wife, the for-mer Daphne Hozee, reside in Montgom-ery with their two children, Kelsey and Jacob.

Since the installation of its athletic department in 1975, Auburn University
at Montgomery has been known throughout the NAIA for its competitiveness
on the fi eld and court of play. Furthermore, AUM offers some of the best
facilities in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit.
The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s
and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymna-
sium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included
a refi nishing of the gym fl oor, the installation of new bleachers and new chair-
back seating, bringing the upgraded capacity to 2,760.
The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the
newly built on-campus softball fi eld, on which the AUM softball team was able
to play all home games during the 2010 season. The fi eld is part of the AUM
Softball Complex, which includes a new state-of-the-art press box, concessions

The 2012-13 academic year marks the 13th year for Auburn Montgom-
ery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Con-
ference (SSAC). In 2010, the conference announced an expansion and
now showcases 15 member institutions located throughout the southeast,
including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South
Carolina and Tennessee.
Located in Norcross, Ga., the SSAC sponsor 13 intercollegiate sports including men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, vol-
leyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s golf. The conference is led by Dr. Kurt
Patberg, who became the commissioner in March of 2008. The conference staff also features Assistant Commissioner Jonathan Wojciechowski, Sports
Information Director Tyler Hyde, and an Eligibility Chair, Dr. Ron Melton.
The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University,
Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the
conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the
need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the offi cial name was again changed to the Southern States
Athletic Conference.
The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition,
excellence and quality that appropriately represents its member institutions.
Since the conference’s inception and affi liation with the NAIA, 26 SSAC teams and 11 individuals have
claimed national titles, while 22 teams have fi nished national runners-up.
Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
since 1975. In those 36 years, AUM has claimed 21 national championships and six of the school’s 10 var-
sity programs have appeared in a national championship game.
The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional mem-
bers and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada.
Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics.
Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering fi rst-rate
athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affi rmed its commitment to equality by becoming the fi rst national organization to offer institutional
postseason opportunities to black student-athletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1,
1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women.
Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to student-athletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement
and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the
philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the fi ve core values of respect,
responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent
to the benefi t of each individual.
In addition, the Champions of Character program monitors each NAIA institution’s commitment to the
initiative with its Scorecard, which is divided into character training, conduct in competition, academic
focus, character recognition and character promotion. Last year, AUM was one of 220 school’s recognized
as a Five Star institution after earning 80 points on a 100-point scale, the 42nd-best total in the country.
