Les Christensen’s work explores the complexity of meaning that underlies appearances. Her sculptures are composed of thousands of objects—shoes, nails, glass shards, chinaplates—that result from an obsessive process of accumulation. Why Should I Walk If I HaveWings to Fly? weaves together complex psychological and social dimensions to ultimatelycommunicate universal facets of the artist’s personal experience. Christensen created thisambitious set of wings from fifty-three hundred second-hand women’s shoes attached to a wooden armature—a “feat” of artistry, engineering, and visual poetry that evokes multiplesignifications. In this context the shoe may serve as a metaphor for an individual’s lifeexperience and recall the expression “to put oneself in someone else’s shoes.” Theconnection between wings and worn shoes evokes a path in life “walked,” then left behind,circumstances overcome, or a new beginning.
