2012 ANNUAL REPORT

What an eventful year we had in 2012! It was the seventh consecutive year of a balanced budget, we had increased daily attendance and were awarded grants from both the National Science Foundation and the American Association for State and Local History. Also, we held the grand reopening of 1836 Prairietown. These were just a few highlights. But, the year didn’t come without struggles.

We fought record heat through the summer with temperatures reaching 106 degrees in July. This intense heat made it uncomfortable to be outside and interfered with visitation. Our wonderfully creative staff worked hard to find innovative ways to keep guests cool. Daily water gun fights – Union against Confederates – although anachronistic, elicited rave reviews. Tin cup water races in 1836 Prairietown helped refresh guests on these hot days. We also gave out free bottles of water and provided water stations throughout the grounds to ensure our guests stayed hydrated.

Members and guests also made greater use of air-conditioned indoor play areas, including Discovery Station, Create.Connect, and Craft Corner. The outdoor water play tables and cannons in River Crossing were a big hit with the little ones.

Despite the heat, daytime attendance rose in 2012, with 175,655 visitors coming from all over the United States, 174 countries and five continents. We also saw increases in school groups and membership revenue. Another positive highlight included record attendance for the fourth consecutive year for our summer Adventure Camp and Art Camp.

In June 2012, we held a grand reopening of our cornerstone experience, 1836 Prairietown. The revitalization included new entry portals to help guests transition back in time to 1836, fresh coats of vibrant paint on the houses, a new, bigger Barker Brothers’ Pottery Shop and new programming. Drawing from the “avatar” concept used in video games, staff created roles for guests, particularly children, to take on, earn stickers and coins and buy small items from Whitaker’s Store. We also added activities for younger children, including "Seek and Find Guidebooks" and play areas in each home.

The following month, we received the 2012 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History for 1863 Civil War Journey: Raid on Indiana. This award is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.

In fall 2012, we received a $2.3 million National Science Foundation grant. The funds are helping us develop a ground-breaking approach to integrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) with history. We are also creating an open-source model for integrating informal science experiences into exhibits and programs that will be shared with historic sites and museums across the nation. We’re working with four history museum partners across the country - Mystic Seaport Museum (Connecticut), Railroaders Museum (Sacramento), Oliver Kelley Homestead (Minnesota) and Wabash Area History Center (Indiana).

We could not do any of these great things without our visitors, members, donors and sponsors that support the many programs, special events and initiatives each year. We would like to give all of them, along with the dedicated board of directors and talented staff, a big thank you and huzzah!
