Letter from the Chairman and PresidentLetter from the Chairman and President

Dear Friends,

The past year was marked with many successes at the Food Bank of Delaware. We continue to address increased demands for food assistance. In fact, in August Gallup Poll released startling information about Delawareans. Our small state ranks third in the nation for highest percentage of residents most likely unable to afford food.

To help meet these increased demands, we broke ground on our Milford Branch expansion project in September. Construction is on schedule, and we should celebrate our grand opening in early September. The expansion will allow us to provide culinary arts training to students in Kent and Sussex counties, grow our volunteer program and increase our capacity for distributing meals to children in after-school and summer nutrition programs.

We continue to focus on ensuring that Delaware’s children have access to healthy foods. Our Backpack Program has grown signifi cantly. Last year 87,499 backpacks were distributed through 76 statewide sites! Our School Pantry program is now in 12 schools and provides much needed resources to students and their families.

Looking at the upcoming year, our new mobile pantry truck will be delivered in February. We look forward to driving it up and down the state in order to serve both the nutritional and educational needs of Delawareans.

Our Anti-Hunger Coalition, in partnership with the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, is organizing a one-day summit focusing on volunteerism, children’s nutrition and policy and advocacy work. The event is scheduled for April 15 at the Christiana Hilton.

We’re also excited to formally launch our new Community Supported Agriculture program. The program will put fresh, local produce into the hands of SNAP recipients and individuals who choose to purchase a share. Produce will be available starting this June for pickup at the Wilmington Farmers’ Market at Cool Springs Park or the Food Bank’s Newark facility. To learn more about the new program, please visit www.fbd.org/program/csa.

Much remains in our efforts to alleviate hunger in the First State. Please join us this year to help the more than 241,000 Delawareans who depend on our services. There are many ways to assist - help create political will, volunteer your time, start a food drive or make a fi nancial donation.

In July 2012 the Board of Directors of the Food Bank of Delaware unanimously voted to break ground on the Milford Branch expansion project. With increased demands for hunger-relief programming in Kent and Sussex Counties and an urgent need for a job training program focused on culinary arts, the Board of Directors determined that the organization would continue to raise the needed funds for the project during the construction phase. Blueprints call for the construction of an industrial-sized kitchen to prepare hot meals for children in after-school enrichment programs and house The Culinary School at the Food Bank of Delaware, a volunteer room to eliminate the need for volunteers to work in warehouse aisles and additional space to increase hunger-relief programming for residents of Kent and Sussex Counties. The Culinary School will serve under- and unemployed adults, individuals in prison re-entry programs and those with disabilities. The school will be a second site to the existing Culinary School at the organization’s Newark warehouse.

The Food Bank of Delaware cannot serve the hungry in our community without the support of our 508 hunger-relief program partners. They are on the front lines in our daily battle with hunger. From hosting produce distributions, to stocking pantries full of nonperishables and hosting nutrition classes for both children and adults, our work would not be possible without them. A common public misconception about the Food Bank of Delaware is that we directly serve the public out of our warehouses. This isn’t true; our job is to facilitate hunger-relief programming up and down the state. From our hunger-relief partners who visit us weekly to pick up fresh and nonperishable foods to schools who participate in our children’s nutrition programs, we would not exist without partnerships. The families and individuals served by our network of partners are diverse:

“Since 2006 the nature of the client has changed dramatically. We see people who have worked at the same job for 17 years; they’ve been downsized, their company has been outsourced. We have families all the time now. Families who earned two incomes have gone to one income, people who work two part-time jobs or a full-time job and a part-time job. It’s just not enough to make ends meet. The wages that people are getting doesn’t meet their expenses. We are encountering people who are embarrassed, ashamed and assuring us and themselves that they’ve never had to do anything like this before – they’ve always been helping others. The climate has really changed.”

The Backpack Program continues to be the Food Bank of Delaware’s fastest-growing program. Last year the Food Bank distributed 87,499 bags to 3,127 children at risk of hunger through 76 statewide sites. The Backpack Program provides food to children at risk of hunger on weekends and holidays when school is not in session and federal school meal programs are not available. Backpacks are stocked with kid-friendly, nutritious food including shelf-stable milk and juice, meals such as macaroni and cheese, spaghetti and meatballs and beef stew, fruit cups, apple sauce, cereal and more. It costs approximately $148 to provide one child with weekend and holiday food for a whole school year. This includes the cost of the backpack, food for each week, supplies, transportation and program administration. In Fiscal 2011 the top fi ve donors for the program included: Laffey-McHugh Foundation; Walmart Foundation; JPMorgan Chase Foundation; AstraZeneca and Feeding America.

“The Food Bank program is a major benefi t to our school. We are a Title One school with more than 60-percent low income. Therefore, all the help that our families can get is a blessing. The program helps our families with long weekends to supplement food sources. The children enjoy the “backpacks” of food and especially love the mac and cheese. The children and families are so used to the backpacks given out every Friday that I’m not sure what they would do without them. We truly appreciate all of the help that Food Bank does to contribute to our community and school! The 256 students that benefi t from your program would probably agree.”

A look at the program...

Focusing on the Family:Focusing on the Family:School Pantry ProgramSchool Pantry ProgramThe School Pantry Program grew signifi cantly in 2012. The program is now in 12 schools statewide. The partnership allows the Food Bank of Delaware to deliver more food to families in need by utilizing local schools and their relationships with families. The Colonial School District has been a leader in ensuring that families in their district have access to nutritious foods. Seven Colonial schools now have food closets. Through the school pantry program at-risk families with children enrolled at the school are able to access emergency food and hygiene products by visiting a food pantry within the school. Families are discretely identifi ed by school offi cials and select food based on their house-hold’s needs each week. Food for the pantry is provided by the Food Bank of Delaware and school-wide food drives or community donations. In addition, the Food Bank of Delaware promotes parental involvement in the new program. Parents are encouraged to host PTA/PTO food and fund drives to help stock the pantry’s shelves, volunteer with upkeep and maintenance of the pantry and more.

“The partnership [with the Food Bank] has been amazing. The families’ needs are able to be met more effi ciently, and after meeting physical needs, the students are more apt to succeed academically. It has helped have less stress on parents and it has been able to foster a more caring relationship between parents and the school.”
