I would like to pass on my gratitude in your

latest graduates, one of them approached

us at Nigredo Studios in Castle Hill for some

volunteer work, and we needed someone

to help us with animating a quadruped

beast. Jose Melchor Elegado was able to

demonstrate within a day of working by

himself that his is able to animate and

produce a very convincing animation set toit our world, and the original design goals of

    this NPC.

    Adam McKern,

    Nigredo Studios

As the coordinator of a higher degree in

interactive media (The Master of Interactive

and Digital Media), I watched the development

of AITs degree program with great interest.

The course meets the strong demand for an

undergraduate degree in the ield that provides

    both uptodate industrybased training and

the theoretical and critical skills necessary

for further tertiary study. Currently, Sydney

College of the Arts (SCA) and the Academy

of Information Technology enjoy a strong

relationship, with eligible graduates coming to

    SCA to undertake further study.

    Professor Ryszard Debek,

    The Universtiy of Sydney

I believe AITs program offers a solid

grounding in the technologies and attitude

required for someone who is looking to

gain entry into the interactive media

industry. Being a broad industry, I believe

this course strikes a solid balance between

the different streams of media and also

    between theoretical knowledge and practical

    application of skills.

AIT was the rst educational institution inAustralia to offer courses in motion capturetechnology. The recently commissionedmotion capture system is designed andmanufactured by Organic Motion of New

York, and is the rst of its kind implementedin Australia.

Motion capture is an innovative real-timesolution combining hardware and softwarefor motion tracking and real-time animation. This equipment enables animators to easilytransform the motion of a person into adigital signal where the animator couldeffortlessly control the virtual character.

The hardware comprises of sixteen camerasensors installed around the system whichdetects the full range of movements by theactor and replicates the realistic humanmovement onto a character. The resultinganimated sequences are designed to meet

    Organic Motion

the insatiable public who are fascinated bylms such as Happy Feet, Avatar, or Lordof the Rings. A similar motion capturetechnology is also used to produce some ofthe best selling international video gameslike the Uncharted 2 andAssassins Creed II.

These digitised movements may be appliedto a wide range of unique functions andresearch such as high level game interfaceand virtual stage performance.

Our motion capture facility empowersstudents to add realistic human-likebehaviour to their original games andanimation work which they could proudlyadd to their professional portfolio. Ourcollaboration with other motion capturepioneers around the World allows us anendless realm of research opportunities.

Virtools, a behaviour engine and real-time render was introduced into AITscurriculum back in 2003 to accelerate theunderstanding of the elements of complexprogramming.

Virtools is one of the very few commercialtools that offer a complete range offeatures that enable users to create virtualenvironments with a simple click-of-a-mouse, without the need for complexcoding. A user does not have to beprocient in any specic programminglanguage to be able to give their objectsbehaviour and reaction to human inputwithin its environment.

Adding physics to an object such asgravity or elasticity can easily be done onVirtools. Unusual behaviour can be givento objects within a virtual environmentthereby, creating an interactive world of

    3DVIA Virtools

ones own imagination. Some examples ofcommercial Virtools games are: MercuryMeltdown (available on Sony PSP andNintendo Wii); Sarkaban Game StudiosLazy Raiders (available on Xbox LiveArcade); and Facebooks rst ever 3Dgame called Billions, Save Them All.

This powerful technology is not simplyrestricted to creating games. Virtoolsis widely used in industry as it allowsindividuals to create rapid prototypethrough the modern visual scripting. This allows businesses to harvest theircapabilities for the efcient development ofcomplex 3D visual models or simulations.

AIT remains the sole training provider of3DVIA Virtools in Australia.

Epics Unreal Development Kit (UDK) is nostranger to game developers and publishers,as it is responsible for producing many of theaward winning triple-A game titles from thepast decade.

The latest version of UDK is the backboneto many best selling games such as EpicGames Gears of War, Rocksteady StudiosBatman: Arkham City, and EAsAlice:Madness Returns which were produced fora range of popular gaming platforms like theMicrosoft xBox360, Sony Play Station 3, andApple iOS.

AIT acknowledges the relevance of UDK intodays growing digital media industry bycollaborating with game developers, industryassociations and some of Australias topuniversities to develop a rich and solidcurriculum that explores the tools within thispowerful game engine.

    Unreal Development Kit (UDK)

The AIT curriculum puts emphasis onstorytelling, game theory and gameaesthetics; while ensuring students learn theindustry techniques and principles needed tomake a successful game on UDK. Studentsare also introduced to UDKs kismet scriptinglanguage to help create an interactiveenvironment that will offer an immersivegameplay experience to the audience.

The outcome is a cinematic showreel ofa next-generation game levels designthat students could proudly add to theirprofessional portfolio. Using the mostcurrent and recognised software, along withup-to-date workow and techniques, weaim to gear up students with solid learningexperience to put them at an advantage inpursuing a game design career.
