The Adrian College Bulldogs have the “crown jewel” of Division III football stadiums. The Multi-Sport Performance Stadium is entering its sixth year of existence on the campus of Adrian College and is a premier facility. The $6.5 million dollar masterpiece was completed in time for the beginning of the 2006 season.

The football team has enjoyed a .690 winning percentage (20-9) since the stadium opened and will look to continue their success into the 2012 campaign.

Not only does the football team enjoy this facility, but Adrian College’s soccer and lacrosse teams also play their home games at Performance Stadium.

The stadium seats approximately 3,000 fans with 2,500 chairback seats on the home side and an additional 500 bleacher seats on the visitor side. Features include state-of-the-art FieldTurf, stadium lighting, a fully-wired press box, and an end-zone section for student seating. In addition, there is the James F. Thomas Pavilion which is used for a variety of

events including alumni gatherings on football game-days.

In the 1950s, the campus had a football stadium. It was located next to Caine Student Center (then called Ridge Gymnasium). It was later razed to make way for new academic buildings. The College entered a cooperative arrangement in the 1960s to use the new high school stadium, which the College helped build. The Bulldogs played their home games at Maple Stadium for over four decades before the 2006 season. “The Map” was the site for several classic battles on the gridiron over the years.

The funds for the project were raised through the Adrian College Development Office. Architectural services were provided by Hastings & Chivetta, an industry leader in higher education facilities. The firm designed the Merillat Sport & Fitness Center on campus. Construction management was provided by the Douglas Company.

Adrian College boasts one of the finest stadiums in NCAA Division III. The Bulldogs opened Multi-Sport Performance Stadium in 2006 and draw big crowds, including this one from last

year’s homecoming win over Concordia-Chicago.

PERFORMANCE STADIUM


After a .500 season in 2010, head coach Jim Deere knew exactly what it would take to get back to the upper echelon. The third-year head man knew the second season would require a greater effort and preparation across the board.

“I think the first year was really just figuring each other out,” said Deere. “We were running new things on offense and defense and the adjustment period also meshed with one of the toughest schedule we have ever had. I think last year we dedicated ourselves to being a better team. There were two hiccups along the way in the conference, but improving by three wins was a big step.”

The Bulldogs enter the 2012 season off an 8-2 overall record. The two losses coming in MIAA play halted the ultimate goal for Adrian College which is the elusive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship and a trip to the NCAA Division III playoffs. The current drought stands at 1997 for the last MIAA crown and 1988 for the last playoff appearance.

This year will be no picnic for the Bulldogs despite being ranked number one in the MIAA preseason coaches poll. The Bulldogs lost several key components to the eight-win season from 2011. Included in those losses was quarterback Brandon Miller who threw for 1,955 yards and 15 touchdowns. Also departing were two outstanding offensive tackles in Nick Ross and Spencer Whittington, both of whom started for three seasons. In addition, defensive standouts Bryan Garbarino, Keman Jacobs, Jeff Makowski and Chris Cook leave the secondary with big question marks. Finally, placekicker Logan Mitseff and his team-leading 65 points (9 FG, 38 PAT) are also gone.

OffenseThe Bulldogs had one of the better offenses in the MIAA a year

ago. Adrian led the MIAA in total offense (393.8 ypg) and scoring offense (32.5 ppg), while ranking second with 172.2 rushing yards per contest.

This year’s signal caller seems to be a battle between sophomore Aaron Tenney (Gibraltar, Mich./Carlson) and junior Taylor Copacia (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower). Tenney saw game action seven times last season as a freshman. He showed poise in leading the Bulldogs to a late scoring drive in a 19-17 homecoming win over Concordia-Chicago. Tenney completed 18-of-30 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Copacia is a transfer from Grand Valley State University who could not break the lineup at NCAA Division II’s powerhouse program. Copacia and Tenney both have strong arms and the coaching staff is thrilled with the progress made by both players heading into preseason camp.

Senior Justin Hemm (Piqua, Ohio) leads an experienced core of wide receivers who return three of the top four producers from a year ago. Hemm is now a two-time First Team All-MIAA selection at wideout. He began his career as a quarterback and his athleticism proved to be too much of a factor that the coaching staff moved him to a skill position. That move paid off handsomely as Hemm caught 50 passes for 854 yards and seven touchdowns. Since his move to wide receiver on a more full-time basis, Hemm has caught 100 passes for 1,588 yards and 16 touchdown over the last two seasons. He currently ranks first all-time at Adrian College in touchdown receptions (16) and is second with 1,815 receiving yards and 117 receptions.

Hemm also has a legion of receivers who are coming back for their senior seasons. Mitch Gabriele (Hillsdale, Mich.) has a very steady pair of hands and is the team’s best possession receiver. He hauled in 42 passes for 461 yards as a junior and found the end zone three times. Gabriele has played in 29 career games and

is third all-time at Adrian College with 106 receptions. He also is ninth with 1,319 receiving yards and set the single-season school record with 63 catches in 2010.

Senior D’ante Thompson (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford) was slowed by injury a year ago and played in just four games. Thompson is looking to return to form after catching 18 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns in 2010. The Bulldogs found a deep threat with Thompson going down last year as senior Shuan Hladki (Montague, Mich.) stepped up to lead the team with a 20.1 yard per catch average. Hladki caught 15 passes for 301 yards and two scores as a junior.

The backfield has the luxury of returning the top three rushers for last season. Junior Damon Brown (Troy, Mich.) led the team with 140 carries and grinded out 591 rushing yards and a team-leading eight touchdowns. Brown is a good between the tackles runner who can take the abuse and carry the load when needed. Junior Danny Cobb (Rochester, Mich./Stoney Creek) emerged as the team’s leading rusher with 628 yards on 116 carries (5.4 ypr). Cobb rushed for two scores and also showed his elusiveness on kickoff returns. He averaged 21.7 yards per attempt and took a 73-yard kickoff return to the house at Augustana. Cobb finished the season with 1,172 all-purpose yards. Sophomore Dae’Von Robinson (Detroit, Mich./Southfield) is a name that also could shoot up the depth chart at the beginning of the season. Robinson is a big back who carried the ball 37 times for 207 yards as a freshman.

The offensive line will have a lot of holes to fill as four of the five starting lineman in the season finale against Alma have moved on. Senior Nick Mighion (Sterling Heights, Mich./Warren Cousino) is back at guard and has been a reliable player having played every game with 18 starts over the last two seasons. Mighion is rock-solid on the inside and could garner all-conference honors at the end of the season. It appears that sophomore John Rock (Portland, Mich.) has the inside track at center having seen action in nine games a year ago. Senior tight end Derek Shell (Manitou Beach, Mich./Onsted) will also be a solid option to run behind on the line. Known more for his blocking than pass receiving, Shell is one of the strongest guys on the team and can create room for ball carriers. Shell was named Second Team All-MIAA a year ago without catching a pass which tells us about the respect he has among MIAA coaches. Senior Brad Smith (Sand Creek, Mich.) also is back after starting in seven games as a junior. He and Jared Babcock went back-and-forth in the starting lineup and Smith received valuable experience on the offensive line at guard. Mighion and Smith are both very versatile guys and could even move to tackle prior to

C o a c h Deere ’s defense is an

at tack ing style which

uses speed to get to and wrap up the ball carrier. It all starts though up front and the Bulldogs have two players in

the middle that can clog some holes. Junior Aaron

Gray (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King) has made

a solid progression during his first two seasons and has yet to miss a game with 20 straight coming into this season. Gray collected 21 tackles in 2011 with

two tackles for a loss of 11 yards. The coaching staff is looking for

Gray to improve those tackle for loss numbers significantly in 2012.

Senior Kevin Kleine (Davison, Mich.) will be alongside Gray at one of the

tackle spots. Kleine earned his first letter as a Bulldog after transferring from Grand Rapids Junior College. He finished the

season with nine starts in 10 games while recording 27 tackles and two fumble recoveries. On the ends it looks like a pair of Clark’s could see a large portion of the playing time. Junior Jordan Clark (Clarkston, Mich.) played in nine games in 2011 and finished the year with nine tackles including two sacks for a loss of 13 yards. Junior Dro Clark (Flint, Mich./Hamady) has waited for his time to shine and is looking to continue the defensive line’s strong pursuit of the quarterback. Clark played in all 10 games as a sophomore and finished the season with eight tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The linebackers are critical in Adrian’s 4-4 scheme and sometimes even five linebackers are on the field with some rushing while others play back in pass coverage. The Bulldogs have built a reputation for strong linebackers and this year’s core is as good as any over the last couple of years.

Junior Hunter Juntunen (Webberville, Mich.) was the biggest surprise on defense having seen little time as a freshman and then going on as a sophomore to lead the team with 82 tackles. Juntunen started all 10 games at inside linebacker and finished the year with 8.5 tackles for a loss of 28 yards. He forced two fumbles and recovered three more which he returned 45 yards. Junior Deontae Bridgeman (Warren, Mich./St. Clair Shores Lake Shore) started in the first five games last season and was looking to reach the 100-tackle plateau before suffering a season-ending injury at

Trine. Bridgeman is back on track to regain that starting spot this season and recorded 38 tackles and 6.5 tackles for a loss of 29 yards in those five contests. Junior A.J. Gill (Lake Orion, Mich.) filled in admirably for Bridgeman and will likely bolster the group having finished second on the team last year with 55 tackles. Gill recorded 3.5 tackles for a loss of 11 yards and give Adrian three stellar linebackers in the middle.

Senior Joe Makowski (Maple Heights, Ohio/Garfield Hts. Trinity) brings 26 games of experience into the defensive huddle and will be a free-roamer on the outside edge. Makowski proved to be a playmaker behind the line of scrimmage in 2011 with eight tackles for a loss of 49 yards. Makowski ended the season with a career-best 32 tackles including 20 solo stops. He forced a pair of fumbles and also recorded 4.5 sacks for a loss of 35 yards. Sophomore Juwan King (Hollywood, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) also showed signs of athleticism on the edge as a freshman. King played in every game and made 11 tackles with two pass breakups. He also was very good on special teams coverage.

The secondary will be trial by fire during preseason camp to see who will fill both corner spots and a safety position. Junior Jon Gieseler (Lake Odessa, Mich./Hastings) has yet to make a start, but did play in seven games in 2011. Gieseler recorded four tackles on the season with two pass breakups. Sophomore Curtis Rhoden (Plantation, Fla./Archbishop McCarthy) did not see varsity action as a freshman, but did show signs of promise at the junior varsity level. Returning letterwinners who also will be fighting for playing time include sophomore Nate Cunningham (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) who played in six games and made three tackles in 2011, senior Eric Tyahla (South Lyon, Mich.) who played in all 10 games as a junior and sophomore Charles Fleck (Lake Orion, Mich.) who played in nine games and tallied 10 tackles and four pass deflections in 2011.

Special TeamsThe Bulldogs had some glorious moments on special teams

last season, but also had other moments that did not put the team in a better situation. Logan Mitseff graduated after a season which saw him go 9-for-18 in field goals and 38-of-41 in extra points. Mitseff booted the game-winning field goal as time expired at Augustana and finished with 16 field goals (5th all-time at Adrian) and 68 extra points (2nd all-time at Adrian) in his career.

Sophomore Ben Klaver (Mason, Mich./Okemos) and senior Corey Thomas (Macomb, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) are currently in a battle to replace Mitseff. Klaver is a transfer from Trine University who kicked off eight times for 485 yards with one touchback for the Thunder a year ago. Thomas has yet to crack the stat sheet for the Bulldogs.

The punting duties were handled admirably by junior Dustin Salliotte (Brownstown, Mich./Woodhaven) in his first year as a regular. Salliotte had 42 punts for an average of 35.5 yards. He had a long of 53 yards with just two touchbacks, 13 punts inside the 20-yard line and three punts over 50 yards.

The Bulldogs ranked 47th nationally and third in the MIAA in net punting a year ago (33.71 yards) and were also fourth in the league in punt returns (9.53 yards) and kick returns (19.31 yards).


Jim Deere embarks on his third season as head coach of the Adrian College football program. Deere became the 24th head coach in the history of Adrian

College football on November 15, 2009.Deere has made a smooth transition into the head

coaching role and this fall will be his 20th season on the Adrian College sidelines. Deere served as defensive coordinator for three years (2007-09) and will continue in that role again this season.

Deere’s second season at the helm saw the Bulldogs finish 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The team finished third in the league standings and lost both games by a combined 17 points including one of those losses in overtime on the road at Hope College. The Bulldogs started the season with a 7-0 record and were ranked as high as 16th nationally by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) on October 24th. The team’s first win of the season saw Adrian travel to Husson University and set a school-record for points in a 77-7 victory. The team also had two very exciting road wins. Adrian won on a last-second field goal (17-14) at Augustana and then snapped a losing streak against rival Trine with a 26-7 win against the 17th-ranked Thunder in Angola, Indiana.

The Bulldogs led the MIAA in scoring offense (32.5 points per game) and scoring defense (14.2 points per game) in 2011. Deere’s defense was once again stellar ranking seventh nationally in pass efficiency defense (89.28). The team allowed 124.9 yards per game on the ground and ranked 15th nationally in total defense (263.10 yards per contest). The aggressive nature of the defense was also highlighted by finishing sixth nationally in tackles for loss per game (8.8). In total, the Bulldog defense led the MIAA in five different statistical categories.

Deere’s first season as head coach at Adrian College featured one of the strongest schedules in school history and the team went 5-5 overall and finished in a second-place tie in the MIAA with a 4-2 league mark. The Bulldogs had four First Team All-MIAA players and five more make the Second Team All-MIAA list. The team ranked second in the MIAA in total defense yielding 308.2 yards per game. The Bulldogs also ranked second in turnover margin (+4) and rushing defense (124.5 ypg). Deere’s first win came on September 11, 2010 with a 40-14 triumph over Defiance College. Deere’s defense also pitched a shutout on October

9 at Olivet (41-0).The defensive numbers were staggering over the three-

year period under coach Deere before taking over as head coach. The Bulldogs quietly became one of the more feared defensive units in Division III and the stats tell the story. In 2009, Adrian finished first in the MIAA in five different statistical categories including scoring defense (16.2 ppg), passing defense (162.3 ypg), total defense (281.6 ypg), pass efficiency defense (94.0) and sacks (26 for minus 158 yards). In addition, AC was 16th nationally in pass efficiency defense, 28th in scoring defense and 17th in tackles for loss.

In 2008, Adrian finished fourth in Division III in total defense limiting their opponents to 239 yards per game. In addition, Deere’s crew ranked fourth in scoring defense (12.4), seventh in rushing defense (71.2 ypg) and fourth in tackles for loss (9.1 per game).

The Bulldog defense finished 2007 as one of the best in school history. The defense ranked first in the MIAA in nine different statistical categories and finished the year ranked sixth in total defense in Division III. The Bulldogs allowed just 74.6 yards per game on the ground (10th nationally) and 14.4 points per game (12th nationally).

Along with his experience at AC, Deere coached at Sterling Heights Stevenson High School in 1993 and 1994 and Morenci High School in 1996.

A 1989 graduate of Adrian College, Deere was a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs and was a player on the 1988 MIAA Championship team.

Deere resides in Adrian and has three children - Angelica, Danielle and Blake.

Tyler Haines enters his fifth season as an assistant coach for the Bulldogs and will perform the

offensive coordinator duties as well as serve as assistant head coach. This is Haines’ third year as offensive coordinator. The previous two seasons he coached linebackers and special teams for Adrian College.

Haines called the plays in 2011 for a unit that averaged 393.8 yards and 32.5 points per contest. Those numbers ranked first in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The Bulldogs ranked second in the MIAA with 172.2 rushing yards per game and put up 50 or more points in three games including a school-record 77 in a win at Husson University. Haines was instrumental in Adrian beginning the season 7-0 and moving up to 16th in the AFCA Division III national poll on October 24. In total, five offensive players were named to the All-MIAA first or second teams.

Haines celebrated a 2010 season which proved to be a record-setting year on offense. The team averaged 386 yards per game and scored 25.9 points per contest. He mentored Second Team All-MIAA tailback Jared Edwards, who rushed for 1,011 yards for the season. Haines also coached Second Team All-MIAA performer Mike McGee. McGee set the single-season school record for completions (183), passing yards (2,302) and touchdowns (19). The offense also featured a strong offensive line anchored by First Team All-MIAA tackle Spencer Whittington and Second Team All-MIAA guard Nick Ross.

Haines, a two-time first-team all-Heartland Conference linebacker, lettered for three years at DC, recording 143 tackles, 39 tackles-for-loss, 9.5 sacks, and four interceptions after transferring from Division II Ashland University. A 2006 pre-season All-American, Haines also garnered ESPN The Magazine Academic all-district honors and was named All-North Region at season’s end.

Also in 2006, Haines was a semi-finalist for the Draddy Trophy, an award known as the “Academic Heisman”. He appeared on the dean’s list three times and ended college with a GPA north of 3.4.

The Piqua, Ohio native was part of a Yellow Jacket defense that finished fourth in the nation in total defense and led the HCAC in rushing defense and total defense in 2005 and 2006. Haines was a team captain in both his junior and senior seasons for Defiance.

At Piqua High School, Haines was a first-team All-Southwest Ohio linebacker and quarterback.

Haines spent the 2007 season coaching football at his alma mater, Piqua High School. He coached the wide receivers and defensive backs as the team compiled an 8-4 record and were regional semifinalists in Ohio’s Division II. Haines graduated from Defiance in December 2006 with a B.S. in integrated social studies.

Tyler and his wife, Logan, reside in Adrian with their daughter, Harper.

Keith Uecker will be handling the offensive line again in his second season with the Adrian College

football staff.In his first season, Uecker saw the rushing attack average 172.2

yards per game finishing second in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). Uecker also mentored First Team All-MIAA pick Nick Ross and Second Team All-MIAA picks in Spencer Whittington and Derek Shell. The offensive line ranked 73rd nationally (239 teams) and second in the MIAA in sacks allowed.

Uecker was an All-American at Auburn in 1981 and was a four-year starter for the Tigers, earning all-SEC honors. Serving as 1981 team captain, he was twice the winner of the Ken Rice Award as the team’s outstanding offensive lineman.

Uecker played in the NFL for 10 seasons, beginning his pro career with the Denver Broncos (1982-84) and then with Green Bay (1984-91). With the Packers, he was a four-year starter and played all five line positions. He was the 1987 recipient of the prestigious Ed Block Courage Award.

Uecker has worked with Ohio State University as offensive quality control coach (2009-10) and most recently as offensive line coach with the UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks (2010). He served as the offensive line coach at Wayne State (2004-05) and Akron (1999-2003) before spending several years in the automotive industry. He also did an internship with the Denver Broncos during their 2008 training camp. He earned his accounting degree from Auburn in 1988.

A native of Hollywood, Fla., Uecker has four children: Victoria, Jack, Clayton and Jane.

Christon Calley is back for his third year as a member of the Adrian College football coaching staff.

Calley will work on the varsity level with the secondary and will also coordinate the team’s recruiting efforts. He was a standout cornerback for the Bulldogs and also excelled on the track at Adrian College.

In 2011, the Bulldogs had one of the top secondary’s in the MIAA and the country. Calley mentored First Team All-MIAA selection Bryan Garbarino and Second Team All-MIAA pick Keman Jacobs. He also coached three-year letterman Chris Cook. Adrian ranked seventh nationally and first in the MIAA in pass efficiency defense (89.28). In addition, Adrian ranked 16th nationally and first in the MIAA in scoring defense (14.2 points per game). The pass defense for Adrian ranked 14th nationally and first in the MIAA allowing 138.2 yards per contest through the air.

Calley spent the 2010 season coaching wide receivers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He helped produce All-American Jared Jenkins as well as two other Pointers who received First Team All-WIAC honors.

Calley was a member of the MIAA champion 4x100 meter relay team in 2006-2008 and was named First Team All-MIAA in 2007 and 2008. He broke the school record in the 200 meters and also in the 4x100 meter relay during his time at Adrian. Calley was the MIAA 400 meter champion in 2008 and was also named Male Track Athlete of the Year in the MIAA.

On the football field, Calley started all 10 games as a junior and senior. He recorded 20 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups as a junior and followed that with 22 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups as a senior. He was named First Team All-MIAA as a senior.

He graduated in 2009 from Adrian College with a bachelor of arts in international business.

Harry Bailey begins his third season with the Adrian College football program and will coach

outside linebackers and special teams.Bailey had been in charge of the junior varsity team over the

past two seasons and helped groom several underclassmen into varsity players. Bailey coached a talented group of linebackers in 2011. Darren Walter was named First Team All-MIAA as a kingpin to a defense that ranked 25th nationally and second in the MIAA in sacks (2.90 per game). The team also ranked sixth nationally and first in the MIAA in tackles for loss per game (8.8). The defense capped off a strong year by posting a 16-0 shutout of Alma in the season finale. In total, the Adrian defense allowed single-digit points to four teams in 2011.

Bailey is a native of nearby Hudson and was a standout at linebacker for the Bulldog football team. Bailey is the son of Greg and Kelly Bailey and has a bachelor’s degree in secondary education with an emphasis in social studies and a minor in history.

Bailey guided the junior varsity program at Adrian College to an 8-2 record in 2010.

He was a four-year letterwinner at Adrian College and a two-year starter on one of Division III’s best defenses. He was a captain during his senior season and was named First Team All-MIAA.

In 2007, Bailey started all 10 games and recorded 31 tackles and ranked sixth in the MIAA with 10 tackles for loss.

In 2008, he again started all 10 games and ranked first in the MIAA with 11.5 tackles for loss. He also made 78 tackles including 46 solo stops.

Kyle Coleman will embark on his first season with the Adrian College football program in 2012. Coleman

comes to Adrian after a three-year stint at his alma mater Bluffton University (Ohio). Coleman was the safeties coach for the Beavers and also worked with the team’s punters and long snappers. He also game planned on special team units including punt, punt return and kick return.

Coleman also organized all video aspects of the Bluffton program during practice and games. He also had strength and conditioning responsibilities during the season and off-season. His objective was to develop and implement a full strength and conditioning program to improve overall team strength, explosiveness and flexibility. Coleman also was responsible for recruiting the area of Central and Southeastern Ohio.

Coleman has offered his time during the summer months working with several camps over the past three years. He has assisted at Bluffton, Ohio State, Toledo, Bowling Green State and West Virginia in various roles.

Coleman played football collegiately at Bluffton and was a quarterback and safety during his playing days. He was All-Heartland Conference for three years on the gridiron for the Beavers.

Coleman has a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and recreation from Bluffton completed in 2009. He also earned a master’s degree from Bluffton in education completed in 2012.

Caleb Barnes will begin his first season with the Adrian College football program in 2012. Barnes

comes to Adrian from William Penn University (Iowa), a NAIA school, where the team went 19-3 during his time there. Barnes coached offensive tackles and tight ends for the Statesmen beginning in April 2010. He also served as video coordinator and was responsible for recruiting in parts of Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Alabama and Georgia. Barnes received his master’s degree from William Penn in business leadership in February 2012.

Barnes had spent almost two years previously as the defensive backs coach at Illinois College, a NCAA Division III school. He

served in that capacity from July 2008 until April 2010. He worked with cornerbacks and safeties and also assisted with kickoff return coverage.

Barnes attended Grand Valley State University as redshirted as a wide receiver as part of the 2002 NCAA Division II National Champions. He then transferred to Alma College where he was a three-year starter for the Scots. Barnes played cornerback, safety and kick return specialist for the 2004 MIAA Champions.

Barnes earned his bachelor’s degree from Alma College with an emphasis in mass media communication and a minor in philosophy in May 2007.

Chuck Ehret joins the Adrian College football coaching staff and will coach the tight ends and

fullbacks.Ehret comes to Adrian after a two-year stint at Defiance

College. Ehret was the offensive line coach, strength coach and co-offensive coordinator during his time with the Yellow Jackets.

Ehret’s impact with the Yellow Jackets was felt immediately in his first season on the sidelines, as his front line ranked first in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) by allowing only six sacks and paving the way to 218.8 rushing yards per game over eight league contests. The result was Defiance averaging 25.2 points per game in conference action, for its highest scoring average since the HCAC championship season of 2001.

Ehret spent two seasons handling the offensive line at Manchester College prior to Defiance. During his tenure with the Spartans, Ehret saw the MC ground game finish among the top two rushing attacks in the HCAC during each season, while placing four offensive linemen on the All-HCAC squad.

Along with his six years of collegiate coaching, which include stops at Taylor University and Valparaiso University, Ehret spent four years as a member of the offensive line during his playing career at Malone University.

Ehret earned a degree in sport management from Malone and completed his master’s degree in sports administration from Valparaiso.

Pat Hill begins his first season at Adrian College and will coach the defensive line. Hill will also double

as the co-head coach of the junior varsity squad for the Bulldogs.Hill is a native of Southgate, Michigan and received his

bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Concordia-Chicago. He completed a bachelor of arts in sociology and a bachelor of science in sports management in 2010. He then completed his master’s in sports leadership in 2011.

Hill most recently worked as a youth football coach with the Detroit Lions. He assisted with director of youth football while coaching fundamentals at summer camps. Hill also has experience at his alma mater as the defensive line coach from 2008-2011. While at Concordia-Chicago, Hill coached the 2009 team that broke the school record for wins in a season (8). He also coached the fifth-ranked red zone defense in NCAA Division III in 2011. He also helped coach six all-conference performers during his tenure. In 2011, Hill helped lead the Cougars to their first conference title (Northern Athletic Conference) since 1987.

Chad O’Brien4th Season Overall1st Season Since 2005ILB’s/Special TeamsAdrian College (2004)

Chad O’Brien will be making his second stint as an assistant coach for the Adrian College football team.

O’Brien is a 2004 graduate of Adrian College with a bachelor of arts degree with an emphasis in history and a minor in communication arts.

He was a letterwinner for the Bulldog football team and served as defensive captain and team defensive MVP in 2002. O’Brien finished his career with 194 tackles including a team-high 94 tackles during the 2001 season. He had two interceptions and six tackles for loss in 2001.

O’Brien has vast experience as a football and wrestling coach at the high school level. He most recently was the defensive coordinator at Adrian High School during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Prior to that, he was the head coach and offensive coordinator at Mariner High School in Cape Coral, Florida from 2007 to August 2010. He also served as a teacher at both schools. He was selected to coach in the Lee County All-Star Game at Mariner from 2006 to 2009 and also helped guide the Maples of

Adrian High to a Division III district championship in 2011.O’Brien spent time as the special teams coordinator at Adrian

College from 2003 to 2005 and also coached the linebackers and was the junior varsity defensive coordinator during that time.

O’Brien resides in Adrian with his wife, Amy (Thompson), and their daughter, Ashlynn.

Dan Zemens4th Season Overall1st Season Since 2007Assistant Off. LineAdrian College (2005)

Dan Zemens is back on the coaching staff at Adrian College having served as an assistant from

August 2005 to February 2007. Zemens graduated from Adrian College in April 2005 with a bachelor of arts in history and a minor in criminal justice.

During his first stint as assistant coach for the Bulldogs, Zemens managed recruiting areas of Detroit suburbs, Toledo area, southwestern Michigan and northeastern Indiana. He also served as the offensive line coach and head JV coach.

Zemens enjoyed a stellar career at Adrian College as a four-time letterwinner. He served as team captain in 2003 and was also named Offensive Line MVP as well as garnering All-MIAA honors three times in his career. He was also named to the All-North Region Second Team by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette in 2003.

Zemens currently is an enforcement officer/investigator for Lenawee County Friend of the Court. He resides in Adrian with his wife, Rebecca (Irvine), and son, Jacob.

Toby Ernst will coach kickers for the first time this season and enters his sixth year as the head equipment

manager at Adrian College. Ernst has been at Adrian College for 11 years in all as part of the equipment staff.

Toby earned his bachelor’s degree from Adrian College in 2003 and worked as a student assistant in the equipment room during that time.

Toby is responsible for overseeing a staff of student workers as well as the inventory, purchasing, stocking and maintenance of all athletic equipment needs for 24 NCAA Division III sports.

Ernst has also had the opportunity to work with the Detroit Lions equipment staff during mini-camp in 2010.

Toby and his wife, Shantay, reside in Adrian, and have two children, Devon and Ciara.


ASSISTANT COACHESBryan Garbarino1st SeasonAssistant OLB’sAdrian College (2011)[email protected]

Bryan Garbarino will serve as an assistant outside linebackers coach this season having just concluded

his playing career for the Bulldogs. Garbarino was named First Team All-MIAA as a senior after compiling a total of 52 tackles which ranked third on the team. He played and started in all 10 games and also recorded 7.5 tackles for a loss of 18 yards. Garbarino tied for the team lead with four interceptions and returned them 38 yards. He also recovered a fumble and had three pass deflections.

Garbarino played in all 10 games and made five starts as a junior in 2010. He finished the year with 35 tackles including 20 unassisted stops. He recorded three tackles for a loss of eight yards and picked off a pair of passes for 14 return yards. He had a season-high seven tackles against Defiance on Sept. 11 and Kalamazoo on Oct. 23.

Garbarino played in nine games as a sophomore missing just the Trine contest. He tallied two tackles with one each at Defiance and against Lake Erie.

He was a physical education major with a minor in math at Adrian College. He attended Utica High School.

Chris Cook1st SeasonAssistant Def. BacksAdrian College (2011)[email protected]

Chris Cook begins his first season as assistant defensive backs coach at Adrian College. Cook was a four-

year letterman for the Bulldogs at safety. During his senior season, Cook ranked fifth on the team with 46 tackles including 19 solo stops. He started in all 10 games and recorded two interceptions for 35 return yards. Cook broke up three passes and also forced a fumble. He was also named to the MIAA All-Academic List.

As a junior, he was named Second Team All-MIAA in the secondary and also received MIAA All-Academic status. He led the team with four interceptions for 48 return yards and tied for third in the MIAA in picks. Cook ranked third on the team with 61 tackles including 29 solo stops. He started in all 10 games and tallied a season-high 11 tackles at DePauw on Oct. 16. He also scored a two-point conversion returning a PAT pass and had six unassisted tackles against Defiance on Sept. 11.

Cook started in all 10 games as a sophomore in 2009 and collected 46 tackles including 26 solo stops. He recorded seven

tackles and two pass breakups against Lake Erie. He also tallied six tackles and a 68-yard interception return at Kalamazoo.

Cook played in seven games as a freshman and recorded two tackles, two pass deflections and one interception.

He majored in physical education at Adrian College and prepped at Harford High School where he was named First Team All-State in 2007.

Travis Rubingh1st SeasonAssistant Def. LineAdrian College (2011)[email protected]

Travis Rubingh embarks on his first season on the coaching staff at Adrian College and will handle the

duties of assistant defensive line coach.Rubingh just recently concluded his playing career as a Bulldog

in 2011. He played in three games as a senior and registered one tackle.

He played in eight games as a junior in 2010 to earn his first varsity letter. He was also named to the MIAA All-Academic List.

Rubingh was born in Muskegon, Michigan and prepped at Grass Lake High School. He was named All-Conference and All-Area in football in 2007.

Rubingh has a bachelor’s degree in social studies with a focus in secondary education from Adrian College.

Jeff Drake will be the assistant inside linebackers coach this season at Adrian College. Drake served as

the assistant defensive backs coach last season. Drake was a four-year member of the football team at AC playing cornerback and is a native of Adrian having attended Madison High School.

Drake studied Spanish at Adrian College and is the son of Randy and Heidi Drake.

TRIP TO ITALYThe Adrian College football

program has the opportunity to travel overseas every four years, so that every recruiting class can experience a different culture. This spring, the Bulldog football team made the journey across the Atlantic Ocean and visited Italy again. The team also made the voyage to Italy in 2008 and this time enjoyed the experience even more.

The purpose of the trip was not all about fun as the program also got the chance to put on the pads and play against Brigante Napoli as part of the Global Football organized cultural and sporting visit. The team got down to business at the beginning of the trip as they defeated Brigante Napoli 64-0. The game was played against the Italian Second Division squad at Collana Stadium near Vomero.

A few highlights from the game included three first-half touchdowns for the Bulldogs. Alex Krajniak scored on a 24-yard run and Aaron Tenney found Jack Carter for the two-point conversion to give Adrian a 8-0 lead. Kyle Smock added a six-yard run into the end zone and Ben Klaver kicked the extra point. Klaver ended the game going 8-for-8 on extra point attempts.

Adrian led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter and added on in the second as Sid Coleman had a fantastic 62-yard punt return for a touchdown and Mitch Osadchuk returned an interception 46 yards for a score. Smock ended the half with a 62-yard touchdown scamper as Adrian led 43-0 at the break.

In the second half, Krajniak scored his second rushing touchdown from 18 yards out and later notched his third score from six yards. Derek Shell also had a five-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Adrian's defense finished the game with two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and allowed just one first down to Brigante Napoli.

Head Coach Jim Deere and his coaching staff were very impressed with the way the team showed focus after a long trip getting to Italy. "We really enjoyed the game against Brigante Napoli and they were very gracious hosts," said Deere. "It was a great experience to play and show others the great game of football. The opponent was just learning the game really and we had the chance to share information which should benefit them in the future."

The sightseeing portion of the trip led the Bulldogs to ancient Rome, taking in the Coliseum and Roman

Forum. Then it was on to Vatican City, the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica before attending an awards dinner on their last night.

"It was a great experience for our young men as we traveled to Venice, Florence, Naples and Rome," said Deere. The team toured Venice prior to the game on the main island which was highlighted by an incredible glass blowing demonstration and the famed San Marcos square. The team then took a bus to Florence where sightseeing and shopping were the main focal points.

The team then made it to Naples for the game and the night before there was a dinner with both teams present. The teams exchanged stories and jerseys as a celebration of unity. From Naples it was on to Rome for the last three days of the journey. The team visited the beach during their stay and had amazing food every night.

"I can't thank everyone enough for an amazing trip," said Deere. "The trip was a first-class experience and our guys will remember this for the rest of their lives. Adrian College is a great place to grow and our players really bonded during this adventure."
