Followingherlead,the2011-12squadplayeditswayintothesemifinalsoftheBigSouthTournamentforthefirsttimesince2008andwrappedupthe27thwinningseason in program history.
GuidingtheHighlanderstotheirbestprogramstart(7-1)inleagueplaysince1997-98andtoasecondplaceregular-seasonfinish,Ngongbagarneredcoachoftheyearhonorsforthefirsttimeinheryoungcoachingcareer for the 2010-11 campaign.
Radford’ssecond-placefinishwasduetoan11-5regular-seasonmark,postingthemostwinsinleagueplaysince1993-94.TheHighlandersalsosecuredtheir600thprogramwinunderherwatchwhenRadfordupendedPresbyterianonJan.22,2011.
NgongbajoinedtheHighlandersastheprogram’ssixthheadcoachonMay7,2008.InherfirstseasonatthehelmofRadfordUniversity’swomen’sbasketballprogram,NgongbaguidedRadfordtoathird-placeregular-seasonfinishintheBigSouthafterbeingpickedtofinishfourth.Underherdirection,TaleiaMotonearnedfirst-teamall-conferencehonorsandJohnetteWalkerwasnamedBigSouthDefensivePlayerofthe Year. SheearnedherfirstcollegiatecoachingvictoryonDec.5,a78-58triumphoverSouthernVirginia.AnothernotablevictoryfortheHighlandersduringherfirstseasonincludedtheprogram’s200thBigSouthregularseasonvictoryonJanuary24,2009againstCoastalCarolina. NgongbaspentfouryearsasanassistantcoachatGeorgeWashington,heralmamater,whereshealsoservedasanadministrativeassistantfrom1999to2001.AformerstandoutplayeratGWfrom1994-1997,shehasbeenpartof252Colonialvictories,anaverageof25perseasonwithfourSweet16appearances.Inall,NgongbahasplayedaroleinmorethanhalfofheadcoachJoeMcKeown’s468winsinhernineyearswiththeColonials. Ngongba’sprimaryresponsibilitiesatGeorgeWashingtonincludedrecruiting,scouting,teamacademics,postseasonworkoutsandplayerdevelopment,withemphasisonpostplay.ShewasinstrumentalinthedevelopmentofAtlantic10First-TeamAll-ConferencepostplayersJessicaAdair,JessicaSimmondsandAnnaMontañana.ShealsomentoredandcoachedGWhonorablementionAll-AmericanKimberlyBeck,all-conferenceperformerSarah-JoLawrenceandAcademicAll-AmericanKenanCole.LawrenceandBeckarenowbothinWNBA training camps.

Ngongbaspentthe2001-02seasonasanassistantonBobFoley’sstaffatAtlantic10rivalUniversityofRichmond.ShehelpedtheSpiderstoan8-8markandasecond-placetieintheWestDivisionintheprogram’sinauguralA-10season.NgongbatutoredThird-TeamAll-Atlantic10centerEbonyTannerandAll-RookieTeamforwardKateFlavin,bothofwhomwentontoearnall-conferencehonorsfollowingNgongba’shireatVCU.
BeforearrivingatRichmond,NgongbawasamemberofthecoachingstaffthathelpedtheU.S.VirginIslandsWomen’sJuniorNationalTeamtoagoldmedalinthe2001CaricomJuniorBasketballChampionshipsinNassau,Bahamas.AsidefromherroleasassistantcoachfortheJuniorNationalTeam,NgongbaalsoservedasteamcaptainfortheU.S.VirginIslandsWomen’sSeniorNationalTeam.
ThemostprolificscorerinGWwomen’sbasketballhistory,Ngongbatalliedaschool-record2,134pointsduringherfour-yearcareerandistheonlyColonialtoeclipsethe2,000career-pointmark.NgongbawasnamedaKodakFirst-TeamAll-Americanasaseniorin1997,leadingtheColonialstoa28-6recordandtheEastRegionalFinaloftheNCAA Tournament.
Shewasnamedtothe1997EastRegionalAll-TournamentTeamafterGWdefeatedNo.4NorthCarolinatoadvancetotheEliteEight.NgongbawasalsoaKodakHonorableMentionAll-AmericanandaBasketballTimesHonorableMentionAll-Americaselectionasajuniorin1996.Ngongbaearnedthe1997Atlantic10ConferencePlayeroftheYearAwardandwastheconference’sRookieoftheYearin1994.Shewasaunanimousfirst-teamall-leagueselectionin1996and1997andearnedsecond-teamall-conferencehonorsin1995.NgongbawasselectedtotheAtlantic10All-TournamentTeamin1997andwasthetournament’sMVPin1996whenGWclaimedtheA-10crown.
Inadditiontoherschool-record2,134points,Ngongbaholdstheschoolmarkforthemostpointsinoneseason(675in1996-97)andistiedwithformerGWassistantcoachLisa Cermignano for the most games played (130). She ranks second at GW in career scoringaverage(16.4pointspergame),rebounds(970)andblockedshots(326).
Aftergraduatingin1997,NgongbawasdraftedastheseventhpickinthefourthroundoftheinauguralWNBAdraftbytheSacramentoMonarchs.Ngongbaspentthe1997sea-sonwiththeMonarchsbeforejoiningtheDetroitShockforthe1998campaign.NgongbatraveledtoNice,France,toplaywithNiceCavigalforthe1998-99seasonbeforejoiningMcKeown’sstaffatGWinOctober1999,asanadministrativeassistant.

Hardywasafour-yearmemberinNortheastern’sbackcourt.Asatri-captainherseniorseason,shehelpedtheHuskiestotheirfirstAmericaEastchampionshipin1999witha22-8recordandtheirfirst-everNCAATournamentappearance.

DawsonjoinstheHighlanders’coachingstaffaftersixseasonswithDelawareState,whereshewasresponsibleforindividualskilldevelopment,recruiting,scout-ing,academicprogressandfilmexchange. “IamthrilledtohaveCoachDawsononstaff,”expressedheadcoachTajamaAbrahamNgongba.“Shehasagreatbasketballmindandwillassistmeinstrategiz-inggameadjustments.Sheisalsoextremelyhardworkingandiscommittedtomakingthisprogrambetter.Herabilitytorecruit,particularlyinVirginia,aswellasmentoranddevelopall-conferenceplayerswillbeahugeplus.IbelieveCoachDawsonisaperfectfitforourprogram.”
ThePetersburg,Va.nativebeganhercoachingcareeratDivisionIIValdostaStateduringthe1999-2000season,beforejoiningtheMonmouthwomen’sbasket-ballprogramasanassistantcoachfrom2001-04.Duringthe2003-04season,MonmouthreachedtheNortheastConferenceTournamentchampionshipgame. Followingthatseason,DawsonspentoneyearasanassistantcoachatNorthCarolinaA&TinGreensboro,N.C. ShewentontojoinDelawareState’sbenchasanassistantcoachinthesummerof2005.Inherfirstseason,theLadyHornetsadvancedtotheMid-EasternAthleticConferenceTournamentchampionshipgame.Thefollowingseason(2006-07),DelawareStatecaptureditsfirstMEACTournamentcrownandNCAATournament appearance. DawsonplayedcollegiatelyforHamptonfrom1996-99,whileworkingtowardherbachelor’sdegreeincommunication.ShewasaMEACAll-Rookieselectiondur-ingthe1996-97season.InherjuniorandseniorseasonswiththeLadyPirates,thesquadcapturedMEACTournamenttitlesandtripstotheNCAATournament.Alsoinherjuniorcampaign,DawsonwasanAll-MEACfirstteamselectionandMEACAll-Tournamentrecipient,inadditiontoteamMVP. BestbeganhercoachingcareeratPlattsburghStateUniversity,wheresheservedasassistantcoachandrecruitingcoordinatorforthreeyearsfrom2000-03.ShehelpedtheCardinalstoaschoolrecord16winsin2001-02,andhelpedthe2002-03teamtietherecordayearlaterandearntheprogram’sfirst-everECACTour-namentberth. In2003-04,BestmovedontoColgateandservedasanassistantcoach.Sheassistedinrecruiting,playerdevelopment,scoutingandgameandpracticeprepara-tion,whilehelpingtheRaiderstotheirfirst-everPatriotLeagueChampionshipandNCAATournamentappearance. Thispastseason,Walterservedonthewomen’sbasketballstaffattheUniversityofMiami.AsagraduateassistantfortheHurricanes,whocapturedtheACCregularseasoncrownandadvancedtothesecondroundoftheNCAATournamentinSpokane,Wash.,Walteractedasaliaisonbetweenthebasketballandbusi-nessoffices. Amongotherresponsibilities,Walterprovidedadministrativeassistancetocoachesandsupportstaff,assistedinthecoordinationofallaspectsoftravel,man-agedinventoryandequipmentforplayersandstaff,filmedpracticesandscrimmagesforcoachestocutandreview,andplannedspecialeventsforamultitudeofMiamiathleticprograms. BeforeworkinginSouthBeach,WalterwasanassistantcoachatCentralPennCollegeinSummerdale,Pa.Dutiesincludedorganizingandcreatingpracticeplanstopreparetheteamforthenextopponent,coachingforwardsandpostplayerstofurtherdeveloptheirskills,implementingapreseasonconditioningpro-gram, recruiting future student-athletes and arranging team travel. The Highlanders recorded a 9-9 mark in Big South contests and atonepointwonsevenstraightleaguegames.ThepeakoftheconferenceseasoncameonFeb.4whenRadfordtookdowntheleague’sonlyundefeatedteam,HighPoint(9-0),ontheroadintheMillisCenter66-61. FreshmanAyanaAverycameonstrongtowardstheendoftheseason.Inadditiontopostingeightgamesindoublefigures,sheaveraged16pointspergameintheBigSouthTournament.Shealsohit48trifectas,theninthhighesttotal in a single season in Radford history. Freshman defensive specialists, Ashia Holmes and Kiera McIvorhad55stealsand140reboundsbetweenthetwoofthem.Holmesstartedin14gamesbeforesufferingaseason-ending injury. RADFORDThe Big South Conference Sinceitsfoundingin1983,theBigSouthConferencehasmaturedintoacompetitiveleaderincollege
athletics,activelypursuingexcellenceonthefieldofplayandintheclassroom.TheLeague’sgrowingpres-enceasanNCAADivisionIathleticconferenceisevidentbyathleticaccomplishmentsonthenationalstage,innovativemarketingandmediapartnerships,increasedtelevisionpackages,andqualityathleticcompeti-tionwhileintentionallyfosteringtheacademic,personal,social,athleticandleadershipdevelopmentofeachstudent-athlete.ThishasevolvedintotheConference’smissionof“DevelopingLeadersThroughAthletics.”The2012-13academicyearfeaturestheBigSouth’slargestmembership(12)andsponsoredsports(19)inits29 years of existence.
TheBigSouthConferencewasformedonAugust21,1983,whenCharlestonSouthern(thenBaptistCol-lege)AthleticDirectorHowardBagwellandAugustaPresidentGeorgeChristenberrybeganrecruitingmembersintotheBigSouth,receivinginitialcommitmentsfromAugusta,CharlestonSouthern,Campbell,CoastalCaro-linaandWinthrop.Onemonthlater,Dr.EdwardM.SingletonwasselectedastheLeague’sfirstCommissionerandcontinuedtosolicitnewmembers.HiseffortsledtotheadditionsofArmstrongState,RadfordandUNCAsheville,givingtheBigSouthmorethantherequiredsixmemberstoconstituteanofficialconference.TheBigSouth’sfirstyearofcompetitionwasintheFallof1984,andinSeptember1986,theBigSouthConferencewasgrantedfull-fledgedNCAADivisionIstatus.
DuringitsinfancyandpriortosecuringautomaticbidstoNCAAChampionships,theBigSouthmadeearlystridesinearningat-largeberthsinseveralnationalpostseasonevents,includingvolleyball,women’sbasket-ballandwomen’sgolf.In1989,GeorgeF.“Buddy”SasserreplacedtheretiringDr.SingletonasCommissioner,andin1990,theLeaguereceiveditsfirstautomaticbid–receivinganautomaticqualifiertotheNCAABaseballChampionship.UnderSasser’ssevenyearsofleadership,theConferenceimplementeditspublicrelationsandcomplianceprograms,andintroduceditsfirst-evermen’sbasketballtelevisionpackage,featuringtheBigSouthcompetingamongsomeofthefinestteamsinthenation.
InAugust1996,KyleB.KallanderreplacedSasserastheLeague’sthirdCommissioner,andinhis16yearsatthehelmoftheBigSouth,KallanderhasbeeninstrumentalinaggressivelypromotingtheConferencetonewheights.TheConferencehasenjoyedrecordlevelsinmarketingrevenueduringhistenure,hehasbroughttelevisioncoveragetoBigSouthwomen’sbasketball,baseball,softballandmen’ssoccerforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory,aswellasincreasednationaltelevisionexposuretotheLeagueasawholethroughaggressiveanduniquetelevisionpackages.
UnderKallander’sleadership,theBigSouthdevelopedandinitiateditsfirstlong-rangestrategicplan,re-affirmingtheLeague’svisionasadistinctiveathleticConferencecommittedtothequalityofinstitutionallifethroughathleticcompetition.Healsospearheadedtheeffortstoaddfootballasachampionshipsport,whichcametofruitionin2002,andoversawtheadditionsofmen’sandwomen’sindoortrack&fieldin1997.TheConference’s19thchampionshipsport--women’slacrosse,beginsplaythisseasonwitheightmembers.Atthesametime,KallanderhassolidifiedConferencemembership,asanall-timehigh12memberinstitutionscomprisethe29-yearoldLeague.RecentadditionsincludeHighPoint,Gardner-Webb,PresbyterianCollegeandLongwood,plusthereturnofchartermemberCampbellUniversity.Kallander’slongrangevisionhasalsoincludedtechnologicaladvancements,astheConferenceintroduceditsfirstlivevideostreamingeventin2005andhassinceexpandeditsvideoofferingstomorethan700eventsannuallythroughapartnershipwiththememberinstitutions,aswellasthecreationofseveralonlineandsocialmediaplatforms.

In2006-07,theBigSouthwastheonlyConferencenationwidetohaveanat-largeparticipantinthefootballplayoffs(CoastalCarolina),ateamintheSecondRoundoftheNCAAMen’sBasketballTournament(Winthrop)andaNo.1seedintheNCAABaseballRegionals(CoastalCarolina).Infact,CoastalCarolina’sbaseballprogramhasbeenaNo.1seedfouroutofthelasteightyears--includinganationalseedforthefirsttimein2010,whiletheChanticleers’FCSplayoffberthin2006cameinjustthefifth-yearoftheBigSouth’sfootballexistence.The2009-10seasonsawLiberty’sSamChelangawintwoNCAANationalChampionships(crosscountry,10,000-meterrun);CoastalCarolina’sbaseballteamreachtheSuperRegionalsforthesecondtimeinthreeyearsaswellasbeingrankedNo.1inthenationalRPIandashighasNo.3inthenationalpolls;
andthreewomen’sbasketballteamsreachthepostseasonforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory.In2010-11,ChelangawontwomoreNCAANationalChampionships(crosscountry,outdoor5,000-meterrun),theBigSouthhaditsfirstautomaticbidrecipientinfootball(CoastalCarolina),UNCAshevillereachedtheSecondRoundoftheNCAAMen’sBasketballTournament,CoastalCarolina’swomen’sgolfteamwasthefirstinCon-ferencehistorytoadvancetotheNCAAChampionshipoutofRegionalplay,andaLeague-record18baseballplayersweredraftedinthe2011MLBFirst-YearPlayerDraft.
Thispastseason,theBigSouthhadarecord41student-athletesearnAll-Americadistinction,whilean-other10werenamedAcademicAll-Americans.TheConferencealsowonitsfirstfootballplayoffgame(StonyBrook),hadthenationalwomen’sbasketballRookieCoachoftheYear,hadtwomen’ssoccerteamsreachtheNCAATournamentforthefirsttimeinadecade(CoastalCarolina,Liberty),andhadarecordfiveindividualsselectedfortheNCAAMen’sGolfRegionals--themostofanyDivisionIconferencein2011-12.Inaddition,Libertywasthefirstmen’sgolfteaminConferencehistorytowinanNCAARegional,andtheFlameswentontofinish10thatthenationalevent.
Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. CoastalCarolina’sAmberCampbellmadetheU.S.OlympicTeamin2008and2012,andwasoneoffiveformerBigSouthathletestocompeteinthe2008Games;VMI’sReggieWilliamsreachedtheNBAwiththeGoldenStateWarriorsin2010,UNCAsheville’sTyWiggintonwasnamedanAmericanLeagueAll-Starin2010,andCoastalCarolina’sDustinJohnsonhaswonsixPGAToureventssincedepartingtheBigSouthConferencein2007.ThreeformerBigSouthbaseballplayersmadetheirmajorleaguedebutsin2012,whileAveryWarleybecamethethirdBigSouthwomen’sbasketballplayertoplayintheWNBA.

university’sinitiativetobecomeoneofthetop50mastersuniversitiesinthenation.TheRadfordUniversitystrategicplan“7-17”,completedin2007atherdirection,
identifiesfourstrategicdirectives--theinvestmentinpeople,programs,globalandlo-calsocietyandthefutureofRadfordUniversity.UnderPresidentKyle’sleadership,theuniversityalsoaddeditsfirstdoctoralprogram

2007,RadfordnativeRobertLineburghashelpedusherinaneweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.Inhisshorttimewiththedepartment,Lineburghasbeenthecatalystforanumberof
changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.HismostvisibleinfluencestodatehavebeenontheDedmonCenterandRadford
University’snew700-seatbaseballstadium.Beginninginthespringof2008,theDedmonCenter,thecenterpieceofHighlander
athletics,underwenttransformationstothearena,includinganewsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticoffices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathletic locker, training, and medical facilities.AlongwiththeinitialupgradestotheDedmonCenter,animprovedstate-of-the-art

Southtitles.Women’ssoccerandsoftballclaimedregularseasoncrowns,whilemen’stennisadvancedtotheNCAATournamentwiththeirfourthleaguetournamentchampi-onshipinfiveyears.Alongwiththeircompetitivesuccess,theHighlandershavedefinedthetruemeaning
of“student-athlete”duringLineburg’stenure.Forthesecondconsecutiveyear,RafordledallBigSouthinstitutionsbyplacing58.3percentofitsstudent-athletesonthecon-ference’sPresidentialHonorRoll.In2008-09,theHighlandershad57.9percentoftheirstudents on the list.Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategicplanfor

basketballprogramsatJamesMadisonUniversityandEmory&HenryCollege,aswellaswiththeDallasMaverickssummerleagueteam.HiscoachingexperiencealsotookhimthroughtheBigSouth,ashespenttimeonthesidelineatUNCGreensboro.A1991graduateofRoanokeCollege,Lineburgstartedhiscollegiatebasketballca-
reerasaRadfordHighlander,wherehewasatwo-yearlettermanbeforetransferringtonearbyRoanokeCollegetoplayhisfinaltwoyears.HeearnedhisBachelor’sDegreeinpoliticalsciencewithaminorinhistory.In1995,
hereceivedaMaster’sDegreeineducationfromVirginiaTech,wherehewasalsoagraduateassistantonthemen’sbasketballstaff.“Inadditiontobeingagoodcandidate,RobertisaRadfordnative,somethingthatwill

Dedmon CenterOpenedin1981,theDonaldN.DedmonCenter,aversatileathleticcomplexonthecampusofRadfordUniversity,underwentamulti-milliondollarfaceliftthatwascompletedin2009,makingitoneofthe premiere collegiate athletic facilities in the Big South Conference andMid-AtlanticRegion.Atotalof$15.7millionwasearmarkedbyRadfordUniversityforDedmonCenterrenovationsaspartoftheuniversity’srenewedcommitmenttoastrongDivisionIathleticprogram.
TheDonaldN.DedmonCenter--withmorethan3,000seatsforbas-ketball--isthecenterpieceoftheHighlandersathleticfacilitiesandtheheartofRadfordBasketball.
