Head Coach Bill Nicholson

The 2012-13 season will mark Bill Nicholson's 11th as head coach of the VMI swimmingand diving programs. This 2012-13 campaign has been marked by an improved women’sprogram, as led by increased numbers, the Keydets won two duals for the first time

since the program’s inception.Two-sport star Justina Dunne broke multiple school records to lead the squad, while Heather Magillreset her own VMI records in the diving events as well. On the men’s side, the Keydets earned victories over Howard and McDaniel.

Under Nicholson’s headship,VMI swimming and diving has seen growth in multiple areas. The women’s program was intro-duced in 2005-06 and appeared in its first conference championship that year, before beating Florida A&M the following season tomark the first time it had bested a foe at a conference meet. The men’s team, meanwhile, has set 25 freshman and/or varsity marksin Nicholson’s 11 years on Post, including Dallas Disbro breaking a nearly 30-year old 3-meter diving record during the 2011-12season.

In his time at the Institute, Nicholson has seen his Keydets claim 12 individual/team relay conference championships, includingseven at the 2006 NEC Championships. Also in 2006, Nicholson saw saw Brenden Geoghagen claim Most Outstanding Diver hon-ors, after the senior claimed both the one-meter and three-meter events.

His team's work in the pool, however, only tells half the story. For six consecutive semesters, his men's team received recogni-tion as part of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America National Honor Roll. Teams must post a cumulative 2.80GPA to qualify for the honor.

In addition to his team's academic excellence, Nicholson coached Tom Petykowski '05, who was VMI's valedictorian and an All-Conference diver in 2005 and was named First Team Academic All-American by ESPN The Magazine. Petykowski was one of 15 hon-orees nationwide that were chosen to the At-Large team that consisted of NCAA Division I playing members in gymnastics, golf, rifle, tennis, ice hockey, volleyball, fencing, lacrosse, swimming & diving, skiing and wrestling. He still stands as one of six Keydets toever earn National First Team honors, and is the first to do so in a sport other than football or basketball.

Nicholson (38) took over the VMI swimming and diving program on August 5, 2002. Previously, he spent the 2001-02 seasoncoaching the USS Condors Swim Club in Pleasantville, N.Y., where he coached both the boys and girls programs.

Nicholson spent the previous three years (1998-2001) as the men's and women's head swimming coach at Plattsburgh (N.Y.)State University. In his time at Plattsburgh, his teams broke 15 school records. The programs featured just 12 athletes whenNicholson took over, a number that grew to 35 by the time he departed. He improved the Cardinals men's team's performance atthe State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) from a ninth place finish (16 points) in his first season to a sixthplace finish (330 points) in his final season.

From 1995 to 1998, Nicholson served as the assistant coach for his alma mater, SUNY New Paltz. He worked with the breastand individual medley swimmers primarily during his stint. He helped three swimmers qualify for the Division III NCAAChampionships and the men's team's finished in the top four of theSUNYAC each year.

As a collegiate swimmer, Nicholson qualified for the Division IIINCAA Championships three times and captured eight school records. He won the SUNYAC title in the 400 medley relay in his junior yearand was named the team's most valuable swimmer as a senior. In addi-tion, Nicholson won the Coaches Award for Hardest Worker threeyears and won the team's Scholar-Athlete Award each of the four sea-sons he competed. Nicholson graduated from SUNY New Paltz in1995.

A native of Horseheads, N.Y., Nicholson swam four years atHorseheads High School and graduated in 1991. He and his wife,Emma, reside in Lexington with their daughter, Emily and son, Ben.

Lt. Col Ray Porter, USMC (Ret.), joined VMI Swimming and Diving as its Volunteer DivingCoach for the 2010-11 season, bringing with him a wealth of experience. 2012-13 markshis third year with the program, and he already has seen his proteges earn four all-confer-

ence honors and break multiple school records.Already in 2012-13, Heather Magill has reset her own school records in both the 1and 3-meter disciplines. Porter also tutored Nate Myers, who returns this year to bid for his second straight all-CCSA honors in 1-meter diving, and Dallas Disbro, who broke a long-standing school record last season en route an NCAA Zone Qualifying effort. Inhis first season, Porter was named the 2010-11 CCSA Men’s Diving Coach of the Year.

While attending his alma mater, New Mexico, and serving with the Marine Corps, Porter won numerous diving titles in boththe springboard and 10-meter platform disciplines. Those included the Western US AAU, the Skyline College Conference, theMexican/American Games, the Far East Invitational and the Pan American Games. He has coached several divers on an individualbasis, but VMI is his first experience coaching on the collegiate level.

Porter graduated from New Mexico in 1960, and during his military career, received a large number of awards. Those includedthe Legion of Merit, two Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals and a pair of NavyAchievement Medals. In addition, he participated in the last official battle of the Vietnam War, the 1975 recovery of the SS Mayaguez.During that engagement, Porter led the party that conducted the United States' first hostile ship-to-ship boarding since 1826.

Since his retirement from the Marine Corps, Porter has earned a Masters Degree in teaching emotionally disturbed and learn-ing disabled youth from George Mason University, and taught middle school special education students for 10 years. He has alsocoached several sports besides diving, including a middle school wrestling team that earned 10 straight regional titles, and finally,Porter also represented the Marine Corps as its senior tennis champion for three years.

Four NCAA conferences announced the formation of theCoastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA), a Division Imen’s and women’s swimming and diving Conference encompass-ing 13 members from four regional Conferences in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast regions, on July 10, 2007. The CCSA wasestablished through the cooperative efforts of the coaches, administrators and commissioners of the Atlantic SunConference, the Big South Conference, the Mid-Eastern AthleticConference and the Southern Conference.

“The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association creates a regionalconference championship opportunity for all the swimming and diving programs in the four participating confer-ences,” said Atlantic Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart, Executive Director of the CCSA upon its foundation. “Theprocess of building this new conference has been an extremely cooperative effort among all of the coaches andadministrators, and we look forward to our inaugural championship meet this coming year. The main focus in estab-lishing the CCSA has been the student-athletes, and we are excited that the swimmers and divers in each of ourleagues now have a conference home and honors for which to compete.”

The CCSA has 13 total members – 13 women’s swimming and diving teams and six men’s swimming and diving pro-grams. The charter members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (Big South), College of Charleston(SoCon), Davidson (SoCon), Florida Gulf Coast (A-Sun), Gardner-Webb (Big South), Georgia Southern (SoCon),Howard (MEAC), Liberty (Big South), North Carolina A&T (MEAC), North Florida (A-Sun), Radford (Big South), UNCAsheville (Big South) and VMI (Big South). The six schools that comprise the CCSA men’s swimming members areCollege of Charleston, Davidson, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, Howard and VMI. The CCSA hosted its inauguralConference Championship on Feb. 21-23, 2008.

“The Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association membership includes many excellent programs from the Southeastand Middle Atlantic, and will create a demanding and challenging meet for all of those involved,” said VMI swimmingand diving coach Bill Nicholson upon the league’s founding. “This is a step up for our program here at VMI and weare looking forward to getting up on the blocks and racing against the higher level of competition the CCSA willpresent us.”
