HILLSHIRE BRANDS AND ROME
…Carla Mueller
Quick, what’s
the first thing that
pops into your
mind when you
hear Hillshire
Brands?
Sausage, right?
Well, not here in
Rome said Carla Mueller, Plant Operations
Manager. Instead, think granola.
Rome’s facility is the birth place and
number-one producer of Nature Valley
Crunchy Granola Bars. Now made in Spain,
Argentina, and two other U.S. locations,
Rome still makes way more than the others.

and where we’re going.
CLAUDIA OAKES, former Rome
Rotarian, returned for a visit and
brought a flag from
her new
club, Pu-

Great to
see her.

Granola…
The package doesn’t
mention Rome or their
319 employees or the
awards won; it reads
General Mills reflecting
Hillshire’s 30-year part-
nership with them. The
plant opened in 1971,
and is now at 125,000
square feet on eleven
acres.
Teetering on the
brink of failure in 2007,
the Rome plant had an
abysmal safety record. If not cleaned up, there
would be no jobs.
They became Plant of the Year by 2011 and
Safety Plant of the Year in 2012. They currently
are at 2.2 million labor hours with no lost-time
accidents and in March of 2013, had 358 days
without a recordable accident. Ms. Mueller says
she’s not responsible for the improvement, but
says, “The secret ingredient is the people of
Rome...We do it perfectly.”
Everyone in the plant is engaged in recycling
and finding new ways to do it. They send less
waste than Olive Garden to the landfill, making Hill-
shire Brands in Rome a Level I Zero Waste Facility.
Ms. Mueller says they work to do things ‘easier,
faster, and better.’ Thus, Rome is the location of the
pilot plant for any new flavors.
For most people, the outstanding fact is Nature
Valley Granola Bars taste great and come
in Oat n’ Honey, Peanut Butter, Cinnamon, Roasted
Almond, Pecan, Cranberry, Maple Brown Sugar and
Chocolate.

NOT A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW?
Do we have a deal for you
Email Pete McDonald to find out what your to-date contribution is.
One of the key means to support the Rotary International Foundation is by
members’ contributing $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation and being recognized as Paul
Harris Fellows. The Rome Rotary Club has more than 110 Paul Harris Fellows. One of
our goals is for all members to achieve the Paul Harris Fellow designation and for us to
become a 100% Paul Harris Fellow Club.
To encourage the members who have not achieved the Paul Harris Fel-
low, the Rome Rotary Board has approved the use of some of our Club level
points to offer an incentive to members who have contributed $750 or more
to the Rotary Foundation
The appropriate level of Club points will be used to move these mem-
bers to their $1,000 level and recognize the members with the Paul Harris
Fellow. Also, members who have contributed less than $750 have the oppor-
tunity to bring their contribution level up to $750 and receive the points to
become a Paul Harris Fellow.
Please consider making a contribution to the Rotary Foundation. You may send a
check designated for the Rotary Foundation to Tressie Wilson at Rome Rotary, PO Box
71, Rome, Georgia 30162-0071.

JOHN QUINLIVAN
WINS AWARD
The details were hazy
but it seemed to be an
award for his skill on
his riding lawnmower.
Apparently, he’s trying
to make his lawnmower
amphibious.
