Dear Appalachian Family,

We submit to you, our biggest supporters, the 2012-13 Appalachian State athletics annual report. Within the attached pages are just a few of the wonderful examples of the tangible ‘Experience-Based Learning’ that occurs on our campus each and every day from the commitment of a dedicated staff and tremendous young people.

This past year was one of the most historic and successful years in Appalachian State history, highlighted by the announcement on March 27, 2013 that the University had accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference – a move that is the result of years of hard work and dedication on the part of the entire Appalachian Family.

In addition, Appalachian athletics raised a record $4.3 million in private support – including over $3 million in donations to the Yosef Club, which directly benefits scholarships for student-athletes.

We also saw great success on the fields of competition, as the Mountaineers secured both the Southern Conference Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same season for the ninth time, and in the classroom, where we saw over 200 student-athletes earn a spot on the SoCon Honor Roll.

We are fortunate to enjoy many successes – on the field of competition, in the classroom and in the community. Providing our 460 student-athletes with what we proudly describe as the ‘Appalachian State Experience’ is our paramount goal each and every year.

However, we could not accomplish our goals and enjoy the tremendous success without your involvement and support. Your time and resources make a difference for the next generation of Appalachian leaders.

Again, on behalf of the entire Appalachian State athletics department, I thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy reading the next few pages and celebrating as a part of the Appalachian Family.

Today I Give My All For Appalachian State,

Charlie CobbDirector of Athletics

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS CHARLIE COBB

APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to the high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institutional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifications, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its effects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthusiasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favor-able public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.

ATHLETIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS• Swept the Southern Conference’s Commissioner’s and Germann Cups (all-sports championships for men’s and women’s sports, respectively). Appalachian State is the only school to ever win the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same academic year, a feat it has now accomplished nine times (1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1991-92, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2012-13).

• The Commissioner’s Cup is Appalachian State’s eighth-straight, 21st in 22 years, 28th in 30 years and 33rd overall.

• The Germann Cup is Appalachian State’s 10th overall (good for second-most in conference history behind Furman’s 12).

• Five teams won Southern Conference championships (football, softball, women’s cross country, men’s cross country and men’s indoor track and field).

• Nine of the 19 sports that compete in the Southern Conference finished first or second in the league standings.

• Football (NCAA Division I Football Championship) and women’s basketball (WNIT) advanced to postseason play.

• Two wrestlers competed in the NCAA Championships.

• Individuals from the men’s and women’s cross country and outdoor track and field teams participated in NCAA Regionals.

ACADEMIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS• Student-athletes posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher both semesters.

• Student-athletes received five awards as the top students in their respective academic programs for the academic year (men’s basketball’s Nathan Healy - Walker College of Business Top Overall Student, Outstanding Finance Student and Outstanding Management Student; women’s golf’s Rumbidzai Masamvu - Walker College of Business Outstanding Risk Management and Insurance Student; football’s Tony Washington - Most Outstanding Architectural Design Student).

• Nathan Healy was one of 15 NCAA Division I men’s basketball players to earn Academic All-America recognition.

• Fourteen of Appalachian State’s 20 programs (baseball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, men’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and wrestling) recorded multiyear NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that meet or exceed the national average for their respective sports. Two more (softball and volleyball) scored within two points of their sports’ national averages.

• None of Appalachian State’s 20 varsity programs incurred penalties for low APR performance.

• A review to determine if “clustering” of student-athletes in specific academic majors and classes occurs at Appalachian State found that it is not existent within any of Appalachian’s 20 varsity sports programs or the student-athlete population as a whole.

DEPARTMENTAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS• Received and accepted invitation to join NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2014.

• Yosef Club set records for donations received in a year (approaching $3 million for the fiscal year, which ends on June 30) and month ($603,300 in April, the first month following the announcement that Appalachian State would move to the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2014).

• A review on DailyInfographic.com cited Appalachian State as ranking among the top 10 universities nationwide in terms of quality of athletics facilities (list includes Clemson, South Florida, North Carolina, Auburn, Louisville, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Alabama, Duke and Appalachian State).

APP STATE ACCEPTS INVITATION TO JOIN SUN BELTOn March 27, 2013, Appalachian State University announced that after decades of unprecedented success in the Southern Conference and NCAA Division I FCS, the University had received and accepted an invitation to join the NCAA Division I FBS Sun Belt Conference. The move to the Sun Belt, which is effective July 1, 2014, gives all 20 of Appalachian State’s varsity sports programs the opportunity to compete at the highest level of college athletics.

“Being invited to join the Sun Belt Conference is the culmination of decades of hard work and achievement by thousands of Appalachian student-athletes, coaches, University leaders and supporters. While we will always be grateful for and proud of our 40-plus-year association with the Southern Conference and what we achieved in more than 30 years in NCAA Division I FCS, we are excited for the challenges that lie ahead in the Sun Belt and FBS.”— Appalachian State director of athletics Charlie Cobb

“I am proud that Appalachian has this opportunity to compete in the Sun Belt Conference. Our student-athletes have earned the opportunity to participate at this level of collegiate athletics and we welcome the new academic and athletic relationships that will develop as a result of this partnership.”— Appalachian State chancellor Dr. Kenneth E. Peacock

“We are very proud to have Appalachian State join the Sun Belt Conference. This is an institution with teams that compete at the highest level and an ad-ministration committed to providing a quality education to its students.”— Sun Belt Conference commissioner Karl Benson

APPALACHIAN SWEEPS COMMISSIONER’S, GERMANN CUPS For the ninth time in its illustrious history, Appalachian State University swept the 2012-13 Southern Conference Commissioner’s and Germann Cups. The Commissioner’s and Germann Cups are awarded annually to the institutions fielding the SoCon’s best all-around men’s and women’s sports programs, respectively. Appalachian State is the only school to ever win the Commissioner’s and Germann Cups in the same academic year, a feat it has now accomplished in 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89, 1989-90, 1991-92, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2010-11 and 2012-13. Appalachian won its eighth-straight and 33rd overall Commissioner’s Cup with 92 total points, 21 more than second-place Davidson. The Commissioner’s Cup race was a rout, as the 21-point margin between the Mountaineers and second-place Davidson was larger than the difference between the Wildcats (71 pts.) and 10th place The Citadel (50.5 pts.). Appalachian State’s convincing Commissioner’s Cup victory came on the strength of conference championships in football, cross country and indoor track and field. Half of the Mountaineers’ 10 men’s programs finished first or second in the SoCon standings. The Mountaineers have won all 33 of their Commissioner’s Cups in the last 36 years. Appalachian has also claimed the honor 28 times in the last 30 years and 21 times in the last 22 years. Appalachian State’s women won their 10th Germann Cup by the slimmest of margins, edging Elon by a half-point (77.5-77). Softball’s first-ever conference championship proved to be the difference in Appalachian’s victory, which was also buoyed by a league title in cross country and second-place finishes in indoor and outdoor track and field. Appalachian State’s 10 Germann Cups are the second-most in SoCon history, behind only Furman’s 12. In addition to the nine claimed in its nine Germann/Commissioner’s Cup sweeps, Appalachian also won the Germann Cup in 1990-91.

Appalachian State won its eighth-straight and 33rd overall Commissioner’s Cup in 2012-13 as the Southern Conference’s top all-around men’s sports program.

Appalachian State won the 10th Germann Cup in school history in 2012-13 as the South-ern Conference’s top all-around women’s sports program.

FIVE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPSFOOTBALL Appalachian State football won its 12th Southern Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA Division I Football Championship for the 20th time in 2012, finishing with an 8-4 overall record and 6-2 mark in SoCon play. The Mountaineers sewed up their seventh SoCon title in eight seasons and eighth-straight playoff berth by winning the final two games of the regular season — a thrilling 31-28 triumph at No. 1 Georgia Southern and a heart-stopping 33-28 victory over Furman in the regular-season finale. The win over Furman not only clinched a share of the conference crown but pulled Appalachian even with the Paladins for the all-time SoCon record for football championships (12).

SOFTBALL After being picked to finish fourth in the Southern Conference preseason poll, Appalachian State softball shocked the league by winning its first-ever SoCon title in convincing fashion. Appalachian went 31-22 overall, including a 17-17 mark in SoCon play, a game-and-a-half clear of second-place College of Charleston. The Mountaineers’ historic season was highlighted by going 18-0 at home, good for the year’s best home record in NCAA Division I. Appalachian outscored its opponents, 118-68, at Sywassink-Lloyd Family Stadium. Senior outfielder Allie Cashion (Player of the Year) and head coach Shae Wesley (Coach of the Year) earned individual SoCon accolades.

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Appalachian State men’s cross country captured its 15th Southern Conference championship by easily out-distancing second-place Chattanooga by 28 points at the league’s championship meet in Charleston, S.C. Five Mountaineers finished among the top 20 at the SoCon Championship, led by all-conference honorees Alex Taylor (fourth), Sean Soderman (11th) and Michael Lilly (14th). Additionally, head coach Michael Curcio was named the SoCon Coach of the Year for the 10th time. Appalachian advanced to the NCAA Southeast Regional meet in Charlotte, where it posted a strong 13th-place showing.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Apppalachian State women’s cross country won its 10th Southern Conference championship with a four-point victory over second-place Elon at the league’s championship meet in Charleston, S.C. Amanda Hamilton paced the Apps with a fifth-place finish, followed by Allison Cook (12th), Sarah Williamson (14th), Justine Stocks (15th) and Kaitlyn Cagle (18th). Hamilton, Cook and Williamson brought home all-conference recognition while head coach Michael Curcio was named SoCon Coach of the Year. Appalachian, which won the Winthrop Invitational early in the regular season, capped off the year with an 11th-place showing at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet.

MEN’S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD Appalachian State won its 19th Southern Conference championship in indoor track and field in 2013, topping second-place Samford by 4.5 points at the league’s championship meet in Winston-Salem. Four different Mountaineers won a total of five individual titles to lift Appalachian to the championship. Jared Stalling led the way by winning crowns in the shot put and weight throw. He was joined atop the podium by Stanley Broaden (60m), Alex Taylor (mile) and Jamal Tiller (triple jump). Broaden broke school and conference records with a 7.90-second time in the 60 meters while Tiller’s 15.41-meter triple-jump set a new facility record at Winston-Salem’s JDL Fast Track.

YOSEF CLUB SETS ANOTHER NEW FUNDRAISING RECORD Appalachian State University athletics generated a record $4.3 million in private support during the 2012-13 fiscal year. The $4.3 million includes annual funding for premium seating, sport-specific fundraising and a record $3,004,245 million in donations to the Yosef Club, which directly benefits scholarships for student-athletes. The Yosef Club surpassed the $3 million mark for the first time due in large part a single-month-record $603,300 in donations in April. The single-month record came in the first full month after Appalachian State athletics announced that it accepted an invitation to join the Sun Belt Conference and NCAA Division I FBS on July 1, 2014. The Yosef Club’s $3,004,245 raised in 2012-13 marks the eighth-straight year that the fundraising arm of Appalachian State athletics set a new record for donations.

APPALACHIAN ATHLETICS UNVEILS STRATEGIC PLAN With the consistently evolving landscape of NCAA Division I Athletics, during 2012, the Department of Athletics engaged in a strategic planning process. Our athletics staff and other invested stakeholders comprised the subcommittees. The primary objective was to continue the self-analysis started by the 2011 Athletics Feasibility Committee study. Our purpose in this process was to verify strengths, recognize and reduce weaknesses, create new growth opportunities, shelter threats to our activities, consolidate services and opportunities within the athletics enter-prise and align and allocate resources toward prioritized goals. Our focus and review was based on the seven different study areas detailed below:

• The ‘App State Experience,’ which we define as providing the best possible academic, athletics, and social experience for our student-athletes. How do we enhance this?• Culture - What is our departmental culture and how do we create our desired culture?• Leadership – How do we create leadership opportunities for our staff and student-athletes?• Fiscal Practices and Innovation – Where are we allocating our resources in alignment with our vision and goals? What creative new approaches can we implement?• Revenue Enhancement – The prioritization of external revenue funding for athletics.• Branding, Marketing and Public Relations – Are there new and creative means for us to deliver a consistent message to our stakeholders and effectively build the ‘App State’ brand?• Facilities Master Plan – Define the next phase of athletics facility construction and funding.

The results of our Strategic Plan are our vision to guide Appalachian State Athletics in the pursuit of championship results in the classroom, on the fields of play, and in the community.
