Welcome to the seventh online Annual Report as Cary Academy looks back over the highlights of the 2012-2013 school year and thanks those many supporters who had a role in those successes…

Congratulations to the Cary Academy community and friends for surpassing last year’s totals in giving, participation, and volunteer hours!!! Thank you for keeping Cary Academy at the forefront of your lives. Even as we faced changes and uncertainty, annual fundraising events at Cary Academy such as the Cary Academy Fund, the Holiday Shoppe, the PTAA auction and the Scholars’ Golf Tournament continued to grow and reach new heights. A heartfelt thanks to Cary Academy Fund chairs Doyle and Nancy Parrish for their dedication, strong leadership and desire to exceed the goal and post strong percentages for participation! Board and employee participation was 100 percent, and we topped our goal by nearly five percent!!!

As in years’ past the Class of 2013 can be grateful to their parents for establishing the Class of 2013 Endowment Fund for 2013 graduates. This endowment will grow well into the future. The Class of 2013, under the leadership of Bailey Plymyer, voted to earmark the use of their endowment for student community service initiatives. A special thanks to chairs Sue Haberberger, Matt Plymyer and their daughter, Bailey, for all their hard work and hours invested. The changes in the endowment campaign and the addition of student involvement made a significant difference in the understanding of the endowment by the senior class while generating excitement for the establishment of their endowment.

Once again, Cary Academy long-time friend Bubba Rawl enabled us to offer sponsorships for an evening with The Tenors (formerly The Canadian Tenors) at the Duke Energy Center, and the Cary Academy Choir was asked to accompany The Tenors on several numbers during the public concert. It was exciting to have The Tenors visit and practice with the choir on our campus. Money raised from the event was added to the school’s endowment. This was the second time The Tenors sang for a CA fundraising event, and we thank all our sponsors for their continued support.

Your gifts continue to strengthen our school as do the countless hours of volunteering invested in the classroom, fund-raising activities, programs, committee work and enrichment. An extra-special thanks goes to the chairs of our four major fund-raising events — our Cary Academy (annual) Fund, Holiday Shoppe, PTAA auction, and Scholars’ Golf Tournament. These events help us to continue investing in our students while providing valuable opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

Six years ago, Cary Academy made a conscious decision to maximize the use of technology and eliminate the bulk of paper used to produce this report. By going paperless we helped conserve a vital natural resource while keeping the same information at your fingertips. The on-line report was received well by our community so we continue to convey this key information in this fashion. This report lists individuals, corporations and foundations that have made donations to Cary Academy during the 2012-13 fiscal years (July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013). Your valued gifts enable us to continue the tradition of excellence started more than a decade ago. This report is a permanent record and thank you for your contribution!

Message from Mike Ehrhardt, Head of School

Dear Friends of Cary Academy,

We are delighted to share with you our 2012-2013 Annual Report. Cary Academy had much to celebrate last year, and many of our

programs and initiatives would not be possible without the dedication and support of so many in our community.

Thank you!

As you can see from the financials presented in this report, the vast majority of our revenue comes from tuition and fees. However,

the money contributed to the school through the Cary Academy Fund, Holiday Shoppe, and Scholars’ Golf Classic gets us that much

closer to fulfilling our mission of discovery, innovation, collaboration and excellence.

Quite simply, Cary Academy would not be the school it is today if not for the financial support of so many parents, community

members and alumni. By making Cary Academy one of your chosen philanthropic endeavors, you enable the magic -- which directly

impacts each of our 746 students.

The school continues to benefit from the vision and generosity of its founders. This past year, Jim and Ann Goodnight pledged

funding to construct a new field house, which will complete the final project from an earlier master facilities plan. A group of

administrators, teachers, parents and students worked during the year to sketch out key elements of the new building. To avoid

construction during the school year, the building will be completed in the summer of 2014.

Our newly graduated alumni and their parents have helped to further the legacy of giving at Cary Academy through the creation of

the Class of 2013 Endowment, which stands at $32,000. In the future, the class has asked that these funds be used to further the

community service programming at the school.

Thank you to every member to the Cary Academy community and friends locally and around the world who have contributed

financial resources, creative talents or valuable time to help make this school so wonderful.

Message from Carol Aupperle, CA PTAA President 2012-2013

Cary Academy’s Parent Teacher Administration Alliance (PTAA) includes every CA parent, guardian and employee. Activity reports

demonstrate that this vibrant, all-inclusive part of our school culture contributes more than 450 volunteer hours each month to

initiatives that Enhance the CA Experience. Thanks to our community’s investment of time, talent and funding, PTAA successfully

executed a long list of projects during the 2012-13 school year, including enduring favorites: Charger Cup, Fun Fest, Career

Connections, Book Fair and the PTAA auction.

To support CA’s Portrait of a Student, life vision development served as the theme of PTAA educational events, including

presentations by clinical psychologist and executive trainer Dr. Don Fernando Azevedo and Duke University Fuqua School of Business

executive coach and Culture2Culture founder Ellen Baker; panel discussions on both mindset and post-CA life featuring alumni

parents and CA faculty and staff; and a two-day program providing guideposts to success for MS girls and their mothers.

Furthering the goals of collaboration and outreach, PTAA hosted a parent association leader summit to discuss the commonalities,

challenges and successes independent school organizations face. And PTAA partnered in the educational program CA101, which

encourages increased family involvement with CA among parents of rising sixth- and ninth-grade students.

With the support of CA’s Information Services Department, PTAA rolled out a program to house historic and operational information

on CA servers. Established to support future PTAA development, program implementation will continue during the 2013-14 year.

PTAA’s Grants Program enriched and enhanced diverse areas of CA student interest within and beyond the academic curriculum.

Grants purchased a 3-D printer for cross-curricula use; backpacking equipment for the Outdoors Club; flash drives for the Charger

Trails program Encouraging Brain Growth through Sound; and digital cameras for yearbook staff and Photography Club. Grant funds

were also used to charter a bus to transport French students to a Matisse exhibit and to underwrite a Mastering Girl World retreat

for MS students.

Continuing PTAA’s legacy of capital contributions to CA, the 2013 PTAA fundraising auction included a Paddle Raise that allowed

attendees to directly donate funds to purchase broadcast equipment now being folded into a new World Arts curriculum as well as

being used by MS and US students to produce news broadcasts. PTAA gifted $10,000 to this endeavor.

Charger Club, the athletic booster organization that operates under PTAA’s umbrella, developed an extensive network of volunteers

to support every athletic team, and the group reached out to the entire CA community with highly-attended spring and fall tailgates.

In addition, funds raised through memberships, concession sales and donations were gifted to CA for purchases supporting

volleyball, tennis and lacrosse programs.

All of these activities exemplify PTAA’s continuing role in Enhancing the CA Experience through initiatives that reflect the evolving

needs of the Cary Academy community.
