    Email from Doug

    24/5/2012

Hi everyone great to keep up with what is happening at home, the country looks great after all of the rainhowever many of the roads are damaged after the flooding and it did mean a change to our plans, wefinished up in Qld rather than SA because of the damage. Unfortunately have not been able to catch upwith rotary meeting yet as most nights we "free" camp rather than stay in caravan parks in the town.

Thanks Kristin for taking the two kids to the camp last weekend.

See you all in another few weeks.

    Doug

    Joke of the Week

An old Irish farmer's dog goes missing

    and he's inconsolable.

    His wife says

"Why don't you put an advert in the paper?"

He does, but two weeks later

    the dog is still missing.

"What did you put in the paper?"

    his wife asks.

    "Here boy" he replies.

The emergency explainedbyThe End of Polioon Saturday, May 26, 2012 at 1:06am

    http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-end-of-polio/the-emergency-explained/281708145258695

So polio has been declaredan emergency for global public health by the World Health Assembly

but what does that mean exactly? Heres a quick summary of the implications of the World

    Health Assemblys Resolution:

    1. Polio eradication has reached a tipping point. While the world is more than 99% of the way

towards eradicating the disease, a funding shortfall has already caused vaccination

activities to have been cut back putting vulnerable communities at risk from the disease.

    2. If we fail to eradicate polio, the consequences will be disastrous. Research has shown that

the world would soon see more than 200,000 cases a year. This is why the continued

transmission of polio is now an emergency.

    3. This resolution gives countries greater powers to combat polio. For instance, they can

choose to require travellers to and from polio-infected countries to be vaccinated against

polio. Polio-infected countries have been urged to draw up emergency action plans for

    combating the virus.

    4. The resolution also calls for the World Health Organizations 194 Member States to fully

fund the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Declaring polio an emergency for global public health is an important step forward, yet we will

only see the end of polio if the funding gap is filled. This is why we are asking world leaders to go

beyond words and ensure that the Global Polio Eradication Initiative is fully funded. You can sign

    the petition atwww.theendofpolio.com.

Hence I have namedmy fundraiser"From Letterboxes to Shelterboxes"Those who wish to participate can request a postcard via my website (address below). My request is thatonce they receive their postcard, they make a minimum donation of the average cost of a postcard and stamp- AUD$1.60 for Australia or AUD$2.60 for overseas donors.I would LOVE it if you got involved and I got to send a postcard out to you! Or you could request to haveone sent to a friend on your behalf (to anywhere in Australia, or the world). If you have any questions orqueries, please feel free to drop me a line:[email protected] have a website:http://letterboxshelterbox.wordpress.com/Facebook page:From Letterboxes To ShelterboxesTwitter feed:@lettertoshelterAnd now a video!http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwuDqadgMJ4My friend and I just finished producing it - after 2 weeks and a heroic 12-hour stint on the last day, it is now
