Agenda
• OPM Picking Rules Overview • Auto Detail • Select Available Inventory • Picking – High Level Description • Picking Rule Setup • Rule Defaulting Hierarchy • Picking and Move Orders – Detailed Description • Troubleshooting • Gotchas and Known Issues • References & Training
7
Batch Picking Overview
• Picking Rules in R12 replace the 11i AutoAllocation rules.
• They are a way to select inventory based on rules such as First In First Out (FIFO) or First Expired First Out (FEFO), and other considerations
• Used for three different purposes in batches: – Auto Detail – Select Available Inventory – Picking per se
8
Auto Detail
• Automatic creation of detailed reservations for ingredients based on Picking Rules
• Analogous to AutoAllocation for batches in 11i OPM • From Batch Details screen, go to Inventory > Auto
Detail Batch or Auto Detail Line • Must be initiated as above, no “fully automatic
autoallocation” when a batch is created as there was in 11i, although you can automatically create high level reservations upon batch creation

10
Select Available Inventory
• Presents list showing the available inventory for an ingredient line
• Analogous to 11i Pick Lots • Uses Picking Rules as part of filtering criteria and in
sorting the inventory • Can be accessed from Tools menu on Item
Reservation Window in batches, to select lots to reserve to the batch
• Can also be accessed from the Material Transactions screen in batches to select lots to consume and transact

13
Picking
• Creates move order to move material from storage location to shop floor for consumption in batch
• For example, you store ingredients in a raw material warehouse
• You need to transfer this inventory to the shop floor before consuming it in a batch
• Picking creates a move order to do this transfer, and uses the Picking Rules to allocate specific lots to the move order

15
Picking Rule Setup
• You define picking rules for batches on the Inventory Picking Rules screen (or in WMS for a WMS-enabled org)
• Define the rules by with material will be selected – For example, First In First Out or First Expired First Out – Is partial allocation allowed? – Must only a single lot be selected? – Shelf Days – lot must not expire within this number of days
16
Inventory Picking Rules Inventory -> Setup -> Rules -> Picking
17
Rules Workbench
• Rules must be assigned on the Rules Workbench • Specifies the selection criteria for the rules, which rule
will be used when • Can specify by:
– Organization – Item – Transaction source and/or transaction type (very important) – Date range, etc.

21
Rules Hierarchy
• First looks at Rules Workbench to find the picking rule to use
• If the situation does not fit the criteria for any of the rules as specified on Rules Workbench, then uses default set up on Organization Parameters, ATP, Pick, Item-Sourcing tab.
• If no Org level default, then uses the system default – rule_id 2, Absolute LIFO (Last In First Out)
22
Picking Process and Move Order • Must have a supply subinventory/locator on the
ingredient line, so picking knows the destination subinventory/locator of the move order, i.e., where to move the material to
• Defaulting hierarchy for supply subinventory/locator – Org level default specified on Process Execution Parameters
screen – Item default specified on Organization Items screen – Can be entered or edited directly on Batch Details
• Note that this field is not used to direct Auto Detail to look first in this subinventory
• If the ingredient already has a detailed reservation, the move order will use that instead of applying picking rules

Move Order Allocation Inventory-> Move Orders -> Move Orders

31
Move Order
• Transacting the move order moves the material to the supply subinventory and locator
• The system also automatically creates a reservation of the inventory in the new location to the batch so it cannot be taken for something else

Troubleshooting
• Things to check if you have onhand inventory but nothing is reserved or allocated by Auto Detail or Picking or shown on Select Available Inventory – Picking Rule setup and rules assignment – Available to Reserve and Available to Transact on Material
Workbench (Inventory -> Onhand, Availability -> – the onhand inventory may already be reserved
– Material Status on Material Workbench – does it allow reservations, does it allow WIP Issue or Backflush Transfer transaction types
– Expiration date on Lots form – are the lots expired, or will they expire within the number of days specified on the Shelf Life Days field on the Picking Rule

34
Gotchas and Known Issues
• On Rules Workbench, make sure you specify Job or Schedule in the Transaction Source field, otherwise sales order and batch picking rules can interfere with each other and stop working.
• For Picking itself, you must have supply subinventory/locator on ingredient line, otherwise Picking will fail because it will not know the destination subinventory
• If autoallocation for the move order line fails because of a problem with picking rule setup, the move order line will be canceled immediately – you do not have the option of allocating it manually
35
Gotchas and Known Issues
• Bug 12884372 – If the Shelf Life Days field has an entry, the picking rule will not work with non-expiration controlled items - all lots will be excluded
• Bug 13966853 – Select Available Inventory is not sorting based on FIFO or FEFO as specified on Picking Rule – seems to be sorting alphanumerically based on lot number – This does work correctly with Auto Detail and Picking, just not
the sorting of the display on Select Available. Note that creation date and expiration date are shown on the form, however, so you can select the correct lot.
