Enhancing the performance of education systems and reinforcing the international attractiveness of Europe’s higher education is one of the flagship initiatives of the Euro 2020 strategy. Multinational Undergraduate Team Work (MUTW) is a capstone project course unit focused on improving the employability of students, which is one of the main priorities of the European Higher Education Area for the decade of 2010 to 2020. The purpose of the MUTW project is to create an environment which encourages the development of students’ soft skills, such as teamwork and communication, in an international setting by means of an innovative instruction paradigm to improve such skills without expensive and extensive curricular changes. This book is drawn from the experiences of the first phase of the MUTW project during the last two years (September 2009 till October 2011). It consists of 10 chapters, covering areas such as motivation, state-of-the-art approaches, communication and negotiation, report writing and oral presentation, open source software, team communication, pilot experience and outcomes and challenges. Providing a comprehensive view of the MUTW paradigm and its surroundings, this book will be of great value to any institution wishing to set up a similar course unit, as well as being of interest to all those involved in multinational collaboration within the education field.

Biomarkers for ovarian Cancer: New Technologies and Targets to Address Persistently Unmet NeedsBook Edition of Cancer BiomarkersEditors: M.A. Tainsky and A. LokshinNovember 2011, 140 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-978-3 (print)Price: US$167 / e115 / £98

Cytoreductive surgery and combination chemotherapy have improved 5 year survival for patients with ovarian cancer, but only 30% are cured due to detection at a late stage and the persistence of dormant, drug resistant cancer cells. Biomarkers could aid in early detection and in personalizing therapy to identify patients who would benefit from conventional or novel targeted drugs. Epithelial ovarian cancers are remarkably heterogeneous, differing in grade, histotype, invasiveness and proliferative index. Low grade Type I serous cancers are associated with mutations of Ras and Raf, but not p53, whereas high grade Type II serous ovarian cancers nearly all have p53 mutations, but rarely mutations of Ras or Raf. An effective screening strategy must detect both types of serous ovarian cancer, as well as the non-serous histotypes. CA125 is expressed by approximately 80% of ovarian cancers, but is elevated in serum at the time of conventional diagnosis in only 50-60% of patients with stage I lesions. Papers appearing in this issue deal with several technologies and a variety of compounds that could provide serum biomarkers which complement or surpass CA125 for early detection. Among these are proteomic techniques, multiplex assays, antibody arrays, glycans, methylated promoters, miRNAs and exosomes. Improved imaging strategies are also considered. To personalize therapy with conventional or targeted drugs, prognostic and predictive biomarkers can be used to match particular cancers with particular agents or modalities. Given the expense of anti-vascular therapy, biomarkers with a high negative predictive value would be particularly helpful. Potential biomarkers have been found in endothelial cells from ovarian cancers associated vessels.

Data Mining to Determine Risk in Medical DecisionsVolume 171 Studies in Health Technology and InformaticsAuthor: P.B. CerritoNovember 2011, 272 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-838-0 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-839-7 (online) Price: US$174 / €120 / £102

Decisions regarding the risks involved in medical treatments must belong to patients and their physicians – after all, it is the patient’s health and life which is at stake. But patients will not be equipped for this decision-making process if they cannot be given some idea as to the risks and benefits of treatment. Such risks are generally estimated by a consensus panel of specialist physicians using supporting medical literature. Unfortunately, this literature does not always provide a good estimate of risk, particularly in the case of rare occurrences. This book demonstrates statistical techniques that can be used to investigate matters of risk. These include kernel density estimation, predictive modeling, association rules and text analysis. It also shows, through example, how these techniques can provide meaningful results and it examines current methods, discussing some of the flaws in models which may lead to misleading results. After a general introduction to the concept of medical risk, the subjects covered include the process by which rare occurrences are investigated in drugs or treatments, the trade-offs between risks and benefits, extrapolation of clinical trial results and the cost of healthcare in relation to risks. It also examines problems such as competing risks, error and the use of group identities, as well as looking at the issue of futility. The book concludes with a chapter providing a general discussion and summary and an appendix shows some of the processes for using SAS Enterprise Miner to perform some of the models used in the text.

Diagnostic and Prognostic Markers in Liver CirrhosisBook Edition of Disease MarkersEditors: S. Augustin and J. GenescàNovember 2011, 70 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-979-0 (print)Price: US$131 / €90 / £77

Liver cirrhosis is the final stage of all chronic liver diseases. This publication explores the importance of

diagnostic tools and the role of different prognostic markers in the different stages and clinical complications of liver cirrhosis. The current knowledge is reviewed in eight chapters by eight selected invited groups of experts in the field. The subjects covered include: the clinical use of HVPG measurements, which examines the prognostic importance of portal hypertension in liver cirrhosis; non-invasive methods currently used in clinical practice for the diagnosis of liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension and an overview of the influence of the presence of ascites, hyponatremia and hepatorenal syndrome in the prognosis of liver cirrhosis. Aspects of variceal bleeding are covered in three chapters: diagnostic tools and prognostic markers in cirrhotic patients who have not yet presented a variceal bleeding; prognosis and prognostic factors of acute variceal bleeding, and lastly, prognostic markers in patients who have recovered from acute variceal bleeding. There is also a chapter dealing with prognostic assessment in patients with hepatic encephalopathy, a common complication of liver failure associated with poor prognosis. The final article provides an overview of the current situation and future perspectives for the integration of molecular data into clinical management of hepatocellular carcinoma. This extensive review of the subject will be of interest to all those involved in the diagnosis and treatment of liver disease.

Health Technology Assessments and Rare DiseasesVolume 13(3,4) Pharmaceuticals Policy and LawEditors: J.L. Valverde and J. PrevotNovember 2011, 200 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-982-0 (print)Price: US$131 / €90 / £77

Rare diseases affect between 6 and 8% of the total EU population – around 30 million Europeans. The limited number of patients affected by any one rare disease and the consequent fragmentation of knowledge, means that working at a European level is not only beneficial, it is also essential. Health Technology Assessments (HTAs) and similar assessment procedures are increasingly being used to measure the efficacy and cost effectiveness of health technologies. They are particularly relevant in the case of rare disease therapies. But for such processes to be transparent, unbiased and robust, the involvement of key stakeholders, from patients to industry representatives, is absolutely necessary.

This publication provides an international overview of the challenges faced, outlining the viewpoints of key expert stakeholders in the field. After an initial introductory section, the perspectives of patients, physicians, HTA agencies and industry are explored. Some of the treatment areas covered include hemophilia, primary immune deficiency and the use of orphan drugs in oncology and there is an examination of Comparative Effectiveness research in the United States. A glossary and appendices are also included. This book will be of value to anyone wishing to better understand the issues surrounding the use of HTAs and similar mechanisms in the assessment of rare disease therapies.

Plasmonic BiosensorsAn Integrated View of Refractometric DetectionVolume 4 Advances in Biomedical Spectroscopy Author: A.B. DahlinJanuary 2012, 316 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-965-3 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-966-0 (online)Price: US$196 / €135 / £115

In this book, Andreas Dahlin has written a comprehensive and thorough review of plasmonic biosensors that operate by refractometric detection. After an introductory chapter on biosensors, in which he sets out the concepts of biosensing in its application to such areas as proteomics, medical diagnostics and environmental control, he undertakes an integrated coverage of surface chemistry, surface physics and optics, specifically related to the requirements of design of a plasmonic biosensor. Sections on nanoparticle plasmons and surface plasmons follow, leading to a review of SPR technology for biosensing. The optical properties of nanoholes in metal films and other more complicated plasmonic nanostructures are also briefly discussed. Later chapters discuss experimental plasmon spectroscopy and spectral analysis while the final sections discuss topics such as sensor response and the extent to which quantitative measurements can be made. The book introduces a few relatively controversial opinions on some open questions, such as how best to define sensor performance and the practical use of highly miniaturized sensors. Each of the chapters is extensively referenced and contains appropriate illustrations. The book contains a wealth of information that will be highly beneficial to both existing and new users of refractometric sensing techniques in life

science research. It will be a valuable resource for post-graduate research students, academic researchers and those working in industry.

Triple Negative Breast Cancer: Breast Cancer Research in EvolutionBook Edition of Breast DiseaseEditors: J. Eng-Wong and J.A. ZujewskiNovember 2011, 138 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-977-6 (print)Price: US$167 / €115 / £98

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a term used to describe estrogen receptor (ER) negative, progesterone receptor (PR) negative and HER-2 neu negative breast cancer. It is closely linked to, but not synonymous with ‘basal-like’ breast cancer defined by gene analysis and is more common in younger women and younger African American women. Ironically, the clinically aggressive nature of TNT lends itself to useful laboratory features such as relative ease of growth of cell lines and robust animal models for experimentation, so the opportunities to better understand and ultimately affect the outcomes of this subset of breast cancers is vast. This book focuses on TNBC, providing an accessible handbook for clinical, translational and laboratory researchers involved in designing and interpreting studies of triple negative breast cancer. It presents a collection of 15 in-depth reviews of multiple aspects of TNBC, from triple negative cell lines to current clinical trials, contributed by experts actively involved in TNBC research. Finally understanding the clinical course of this disease is essential to appropriate clinical trial design and this book will be of interest to all those involved in breast cancer research.

Advanced Linear Cryptanalysis of Block and stream CiphersVolume 7 Cryptology and Information Security SeriesEditors: P. Junod and A. CanteautOctober 2011, 144 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-843-4 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-844-1 (online)Price: US$131 / €90 / £77

The origins of linear cryptanalysis can be traced back to a number of seminal works of the early 1990s. Since its invention, several theoretical and practical aspects of the technique have been studied, understood and generalized, resulting in more elaborated attacks against certain ciphers, but also in some negative results regarding the potential of various attempts at generalization. This book gives an overview of the current state of the discipline and it takes a look at potential future developments, and is divided into five parts. The first part deals with basic assumptions in linear cryptanalysis and their consequences for the design of modern block ciphers; part two explores a theory of multi-dimensional linear attacks on block ciphers; the third part covers how linear attacks can be applied to stream ciphers and gives an overview of the development of linear attacks as well as a theoretical explanation of their current use. Part four details interesting and useful links between linear cryptanalysis and coding theory and the fifth and final part discusses how correlation analysis can be conducted at the level of elements of GF (2n) without the need to deal with field representation issues. This book will be of interest to anybody who wishes to explore this fascinating yet complex part of symmetrical cryptanalysis.

Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures 2011Proceedings of the Second Annual Meeting of the BICA SocietyVolume 233 Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and ApplicationsEditors: A.V. Samsonovich and K.R. JóhannsdóttirNovember 2011, 504 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-958-5 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-959-2 (online)Price: US$195 / €145 / £123

This book presents the proceedings of the Annual International Conference on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures, BICA 2011, which is also the Second Annual Meeting of the BICA Society, held in November 2011 in Arlington, Virginia, USA. A Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architecture (BICA) is a computational framework for the design of intelligent agents that incorporates formal mechanisms of human or animal cognition. Biology currently provides the only physical examples of cognitive systems at the level of robustness, flexibility, scalability and consciousness that artificial intelligence aspires to achieve. The main body of this volume consists of more than 70 research papers, position papers and abstracts presented at the BICA 2011 conference, the focus of which was on the challenge of replicating the human mind in a computer. The BICA approach to this challenge involves a diverse range of current topics in computer and brain sciences, from artificial intelligence and computational linguistics to cognitive modeling and system neuroscience, all represented here. This main body is followed by two supplementary parts: a manifesto and a review section. The introductory chapter to the book provides a brief overview of its contents. Papers presented in this volume reflect the transdisciplinary, integrative nature of the BICA approach, while at the same time supporting one overarching emergent agenda. The book will be of interest to anyone involved in, or wishing to learn more about, the field of BICA.

Enabling Collaboration on semiformal Mathematical Knowledge by semantic Web IntegrationVolume 11 Studies on the Semantic WebAuthor: C. LangeOctober 2011, 610 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-840-3 (print)Price: US$102 / €70 / £60

Mathematics is becoming increasingly collaborative, but software does not sufficiently support that: Social Web applications do not currently make mathematical knowledge accessible to automated agents that have a deeper understanding of mathematical structures. Such agents exist but focus on individual research tasks, such as authoring, publishing, peer-review, or verification, instead of complex collaboration workflows. This work effectively enables their integration by bridging the document-oriented perspective of mathematical authoring and publishing and the network perspective of threaded discussions and Web information retrieval. This is achieved by giving existing representations of mathematical and relevant related knowledge about applications, projects and people a common Semantic Web foundation. Service integration is addressed from the two perspectives of enriching published documents by embedding assistive services and translating between different knowledge representations inside knowledge bases. A usability evaluation of a semantic wiki that coherently integrates knowledge production and consumption services points out the remaining challenges in making such heterogeneously integrated environments support realistic workflows. The results of this research will soon also enable collaborative acquisition of new mathematical knowledge, as well as the contributions of existing knowledge collections of the Web of Data.

Engineering CoordinationA Methodology for the Coordination of Planning SystemsVolume 335 Dissertations in Artificial IntelligenceAuthor: R. SchumannOctober 2011, 344 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-736-9 (print)Price: US$87 / €60 / £51

To solve complex real-world search and optimization problems, it is a common strategy to divide the problem into different sub-problems. A consequence

of this divide and conquer approach is the appearance of interdependencies between the sub-problems, that makes coordination necessary. The field of coordination is investigated by researchers from different areas. An important result of this research is that no universal coordination method exists. Consequently, a suitable coordination mechanism has to be identified for each single coordination problem. This book presents the ECo process, which is the first approach that addresses this selection problem. Coordination mechanism have to respect the context in which the coordination has to performed. This is encoded in coordination requirements that guide the selection process. Additionally, a new classification scheme is presented to efficiently pre-select coordination mechanisms. The coordination mechanisms are classified according to these classification scheme that indicate the characteristics for re-use of a coordination mechanism. The implementation of coordination mechanisms is supported by the CoPS process and framework. The CoPS process structures the decision making during the implementation phase. The CoPS framework provides a set of basic functionality to implement coordination methods among software agents. Within the CoPS process, techniques are presented for the design and implementation of conversations between agents. These techniques are not limited to the design of coordination mechanisms, but for multiagent systems in general. The Eco-CoPS approach has been successfully validated in two case studies from the logistic domain.

From Information to KnowledgeOnline Access to Legal Information: Methodologies, Trends and PerspectivesVolume 236 Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence and ApplicationsEditors: M.A. Biasiotti and S. Access to accurate legal information is of great importance. Certainty of the law, creating the conditions necessary to equality and fairness in a legal system and improving the functioning of democratic institutions, depends upon it. Citizens have a right to information about the laws which govern their conduct and governments have an obligation to

enable access to the law by means of all available and practicable tools. This book presents papers delivered at the workshop ‘From Information to Knowledge - Online Access to Legal Information’, held in Florence, Italy, in May 2011. This workshop brought together experts and research groups with international experience and expertise in realizing effective access to online legal information. The book explores theories, methodologies and experiences which focus on enabling access to legal information via the Internet. The first section presents contributions which address the issue from a modeling and theoretical point of view, while the second part deals with initiatives and projects which enable access to legal information from different approaches, and by the implementation of various methodologies and tools. This book will be of interest to all those involved with the dissemination of legal information and the exercise of the rights of citizenship of EU citizens.

Handbook of Ambient Assisted LivingTechnology for Healthcare, Rehabilitation and Well-beingVolume 11 Ambient Intelligence and Smart EnvironmentsEditors: J.C. Augusto, M. Huch, A. Kameas, J. Maitland, P.J. McCullagh, J. Roberts, A. Sixsmith and R. WichertJanuary 2012, 884 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-836-6 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-837-3 (online)Price: US$195 / €150 / £128

The world’s population is aging dramatically and in most countries the cost of care is rising rapidly. We need a system which helps to minimize the onset of chronic conditions which are costly to treat and diminish quality of life, rather than one primarily directed towards the care of the sick. Innovative use of new technologies may be the only way to provide care affordably in future and to scale that care to far greater numbers as our societies adapt to change. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) can provide a solution. More integration between the health system and life at home and work will benefit everybody, providing better, more holistic lifelong care at lower cost. This book presents and summarizes the achievements of an accomplished group of researchers around the globe and from diverse technical backgrounds. They use a wide range of approaches to optimize the use of

healthcare technology and integrate such technology into human lives in a way that will benefit all. The book is divided into seven main sections: AAL in the health space; Devices and infrastructure to facilitate AAL; AAL in gerontology; Smart homes as a vehicle for AAL; Applications of AAL in rehabilitation; AAL initiatives; and finally; Novel developments and visions for the area. Developing technologies which cater for the broad range of individuals in our complex societies is a major challenge which poses many problems. The research described here pushes the boundaries, and will inspire other researchers to continue their exploration of technologies to improve lives.

Reinterpreting Gesture as LanguageLanguage “in Action”Volume 11 Emerging Communication: Studies in New Technologies and Practices in CommunicationAuthor: N. RossiniJanuary 2012, approx. 224 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-975-2 (online)ISBN 978-1-60750-976-9 (online) Price: US$160 / €110 / £94

Gesture is integral to human language. Its function within human communication is as much goal-directed, and subsequently as communicative, as is speech. Indeed, gesture and speech share the same cognitive, psychological and physiological roots. Although the study of gesture has reached maturity as a branch of scholarship which endorses a multidisciplinary approach to communication, and is now integral to many of the sciences (psychology,

psycholinguistics and ethnology, among others), little attention has been paid in recent years to the phenomena involved – the communicative function of gesture in particular – from a strictly linguistic point of view. This book exploits a number of methodological instruments from the study of linguistics to restore gesture to its original position of importance within the field. The data presented here are analyzed as pieces of information that describe behavior, but which are also an integral part of the more complex phenomenon of human communication. Evidence is provided by means of experiments on hearing and deaf subjects, in addition to a review of the major findings about the use and function of gesture in situations of handicap, such as aphasia and blindness. The ideas proposed here are a result of the author’s long study and speculation on the role of gesture, both in communicative acts and with respect to language.

software Agents, Agent systems and their ApplicationsVolume 32 NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - D: Information and Communication SecurityEditors: M. Essaidi, M. Ganzha and M. PaprzyckiJanuary 2012, 356 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-817-5 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-818-2 (online)Price: US$196 / €135 / £115

Seen by many as the next revolution in software development for large, complex, distributed systems, agent systems represent one of the more exciting research areas in computer science. With the development of powerful personal devices, the vision of a personal agent now seems increasingly appealing too. It can even be claimed that intelligent software agents will eventually become an essential part of Web 4.0. Software agents are finding their way into areas such as environmental security, climate change, seismic safety, epidemic prevention, detection and response, computer emergency response and human and societal dynamics. Because these are of direct interest to the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program, a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) dealing with the subject was held in Tangier, Morocco, in September 2010. This book presents the content of that ASI. This book is divided into three sections: Foundations, Applications and Student Papers. Subjects covered include agent system modeling, system design and experimentation, sensor networks, disaster management, ehealth and medical

Financial engineering is defined as the application of mathematical methods to the solution of problems in finance. The recent financial crisis raised many challenges for financial engineers: not only were financially engineered products such as collateralized debt obligations and credit default swaps implicated

in causing the crisis, but the risk management techniques developed by financial engineers appeared to fail when they were most desperately needed. This book is the first in a series describing research by a multidisciplinary team of economists, mathematicians and control theorists exploring new research directions in financial engineering. It is broadly divided into three parts. The first part of the book reviews recent developments of real options; an application of the theory of financial options to capital investments with the emphasis on flexibility. Topics covered include the technique of variational inequalities, the use of forward and backward stochastic differential equations and the application of a real option approach to a consumption and portfolio selection problem. The second part of the book presents new topics, including simultaneous control of dividend payments and risk management, risk measures and non-linear probability models and a survey of recent studies on market microstructure. The last part of the volume proposes a new perspective. The availability and success of mathematical tools has attracted many talented people to the financial services industry. This examination of the way in which they are approaching current and future challenges will be of interest to all those working in the field of financial engineering.

EngineeringElectromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation (XV)Volume 36 Studies in Applied Electromagnetics and MechanicsEditors: B.P.C. Rao, T. Jayakumar, K. Balasubramanian and B. Nondestructive evaluation is a vitally important tool in many fields of engineering, medicine and art. Because it does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly-valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting and research. Electromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation (ENDE) is the process of inducing electric currents, magnetic fields or both inside a test object and observing the electromagnetic response. This book is a collection of 41 papers

presented at the 16th International Workshop on Electromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation (ENDE), which was held in Chennai, India, in March 2011. This is the first time this workshop series has come to India, a fact which is indicative of the growing interest in the Indian subcontinent for ENDE. Highlights of the workshop were the excellent keynote presentation by Professor Satish Udpa of Michigan State University, USA, which dealt with the origin, growth and future of ENDE, and the unique contest on ‘Electromagnetic Sensors and Devices’ which was organized for students and scholars in order to give them an early opportunity to interact with ENDE experts. The book will be of interest to all those working in the field of ENDE.

Since they entered our world around the middle of the 20th century, the application of mechatronics has enhanced our lives with functionality based on the integration of electronics, control systems and electric drives. This book deals with the special class of mechatronics that has enabled the exceptional levels of accuracy and speed of high-tech equipment applied in the semiconductor industry, realising the continuous shrink in detailing of micro-electronics and MEMS. As well as the more frequently presented standard subjects of dynamics, motion control, electronics and electromechanics, this book includes an overview of systems engineering, optics and precision measurement systems, in an attempt to establish a connection between these fields under one umbrella.

Environmental sciencesHow to Boil an EggA Fresh Look at Sustainable Energy for EveryoneImprint: Delft University PressAuthor: A.J.M. Van WijkDecember 2011, 60 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-989-9 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-990-5 (online)Price: US$29 / €20 / £17

Surprisingly optimistic. That is what the future of energy looks like, according to author Ad Van Wijk. Over a quarter of a century ago Van Wijk co-founded and was CEO of Econcern, the company that developed into the largest Dutch sustainable energy business. Surprisingly optimistic, our energy future? And what about rising prices of fossil fuels, depleting resources, pollution, energy related health problems, dependency on unpleasant and unstable regimes? Furthermore, isn’t sustainable energy expensive, difficult to harvest, unreliable and not yet available by a long shot? And didn’t Econcern itself go bankrupt during the financial crisis? Van Wijk’s optimism seems to be against the odds. But those who are prepared to take an unbiased look at the energy possibilities already existing today, get a whole new perspective. Sustainable energy for everyone, all over the world, does appear to be a goal within reach, both technologically and financially. And much, much quicker than many would tend to believe. In this book Ad Van Wijk, currently professor in Future Energy Systems at Delft Technical University, succeeds in presenting a refreshing new outlook on the ‘energy’ phenomenon. It is concise, surprising and a very good read too, full of day-to-day examples (hence the title ‘How to boil an egg’). It is a surprisingly optimistic book indeed. But surprisingly realistic too.

This book is the international edition of the proceedings of IS-Seoul 2011, the Fifth International Symposium on Deformation Characteristics of Geomaterials, held in Seoul, South Korea, in September 2011. The book includes 7 invited lectures, as well as 158 technical papers selected from the 182 submitted. The symposium explored ideas about the complex load-deformation response in geomaterials, including laboratory methods for small and large strains; anisotropy and localization; time-dependent responses in soils; characteristics of treated, unsaturated, and natural geomaterials; applications in field methods; evaluation of field performance in geotechnical structures; and physical and numerical modeling in geomechanics. These topics were grouped under a number of main themes, including experimental investigations from very small strains to beyond failure; behavior, characterization and modeling of various geomaterials; and practical prediction and interpretation of ground response: field observation and case histories. Both the symposium and this book represent an important contribution to the exchange of advanced knowledge and ideas in geotechnical engineering and promote partnership among participants worldwide.

Dynamic Rights Management in Cross-Domain Geoprocessing WorkflowsVolume 5 Dissertations in Geographic Information ScienceAuthor: B. Schäffer January 2012, 374 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-961-5 (print)Price: US$80 / €55 / £47

Spatial data infrastructures have evolved from concepts into reality in the last decade. However, they are

still focused on data retrieval and visualization. To proceed in the direction of a true spatial information infrastructure, it is evident to process geodata to geoinformation. This book goes beyond chaining freely available geoprocessing web services and assumes that not all services are freely available. Specific functionalities of these distributed geoprocessing web services might be secured and need to be accessed in an on-demand fashion. A concept is presented which allows the dynamic access to and chaining of secured geoprocessing web services without a priori established rights or direct trust relationships in contradiction to the classical role-based access control scheme. The three different workflow patterns - transparent, translucent and opaque - are analyzed on the basis of a real-world scenario. A static model, a trust model and a dynamic model are developed for each of the three workflow patterns. In general, the concepts presented in this publication can be seen as enablers for mapping full business processes in spatial information infrastructures across enterprise borders. This aspect forms an important step towards commercial applications in spatial information infrastructures.

Physicists have devoted much effort to reproducing the conditions of the primordial universe in laboratory conditions in their quest to work out a comprehensive theory of the appearance and evolution of nuclear matter. Whether it be trying to recreate the predicted primordial state of high-energy density matter in which quarks and gluons are effectively deconfined - the so-called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) - or exploring the structure and reaction properties of very unstable nuclei in experiments using radioactive beams, they have striven to understand the events which characterized the Big Bang and the various nucleosynthesis mechanisms which occur in the stars. This book contains the proceedings of the 2010 Enrico

Quantum Engagements: social Reflections of Nanoscience and Emerging TechnologiesEditors: T. Zülsdorf, C. Coenen, A. Ferrari, U. Fiedeler, C. Milburn and M. WienrothNovember 2011, 258 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-953-0 (print)Price: US$87 / €60 / £51

Today, nanoscience and emerging technologies weave ever more tightly into the social fabric. Scientific and technological innovations at the infinitesimal depths of matter now entail cultural, political and philosophical ramifications of extraordinary scope, extending from the molecular scale to the global scale, from the physical entanglements of subatomic particles to the fiscal entanglements of transnational markets. The need to engage these technical developments and their social aspects with fine-grained precision becomes increasingly evident. This volume addresses the question of engagement by working from the bottom up: grappling with the particular, discrete operations of nanoscience and related fields in order to assess how these operations shape and are shaped by, practices of participatory culture and civil society. It opens outward from minimal and local interactions with the molecular sciences – attending to the necessity of quantum engagements – and expands

across the dimensions of history, public discourse, ecology and political economy. Refracting the social complexities of our high-tech world, the essays in this collections participate in the project of articulating new modes of technoscientific governance. Bringing together contributions and perspectives from experts in the social sciences, the humanities and the natural sciences, Quantum Engagements showcases ongoing research activities of the vibrant, multidisciplinary community of S.NET, the Society for the Study of Nanoscience and Emerging Technologies.

This book presents the lectures from the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC) held in Tirana, Albania, in April 2009. The goal of the ATC was to enhance international cooperation in the fight against terrorism by providing the guidance necessary to promote standard training and basic skills for Partner Nation officials. It provided a forum for exchanging views on the latest developments in the area of threats posed by terrorist organizations, their impact on the national, regional and global security environment, as well as ways to prevent, deter, counter and respond to them. It also promoted a wide-ranging partnership of cooperation and dialogue in the fight against terrorism, to boost transparency, mutual confidence and the capacity for common and concerted action. The eleven papers in the book are selected from the lectures and case studies presented during the ATC. They explore the causes and dimensions of terrorism and introduce strategies to counter the terrorist threat, examining different cases related to countering terrorism in detail and explaining the efforts of NATO and the United Nations to counter terrorism. No nation or culture can achieve peace and security at home while ignoring terrorist threats posed to other nations. This book provides readers with an analysis of the strategies adopted in countering the terrorist threat and

It has been shown that those who have served in both combat missions and peacekeeping operations are at increased risk for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Research suggests that this may result from their ‘wounds of war’. Some wounds may be ‘invisible’, such as depression, stress, and chronic pain, while others, such as physical disabilities, are more obvious. In February 2011, 35 scientists and representatives from NATO and Partner countries met in Vienna, Austria for a three-day NATO Advanced Research Workshop entitled “Wounds of War: Coping with Blast-Related Traumatic Brain Injury in Returning Troops”. The aim of this publication, which presents papers from that workshop, is to critically assess the existing knowledge and to identify directions for future actions. The book addresses four key questions: 1. Characterization of TBI: Which characteristics make up and help to classify TBI?; 2. Diagnosis and Assessment Issues Surrounding TBI: Which methods are used to diagnose and assess TBI?; 3. Treatment of TBI: What are the latest treatment and therapy opportunities for soldiers after they have been diagnosed with TBI?; 4. Quality of Life: How are the lives of TBI patients affected and in what ways can their quality of life be increased?

Counter Terrorism in Diverse CommunitiesVolume 90 NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal DynamicsEditor: S. EkiciDecember 2011, 328 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-969-1 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-970-7 (online) Price: US$196 / €135 / £115

Many affluent societies around the world are proving an increasingly attractive destination for immigrants who are culturally and linguistically different. This

can present challenges to state and local authorities attempting to identify those who pose a terrorist threat. There is a need to understand whether diversity in our communities poses a threat and, since diversity cannot be avoided, how it can be successfully incorporated into countering possible terror related threats. This book presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) held in Antalya, Turkey, in May 2011. The purpose of the workshop was to explore how culturally and linguistically diverse communities can most effectively respond to the threat of terrorism. With participants consisting of academics, researchers, law enforcement professionals and terrorism/civil society consultants from 17 different countries, the book ties together research and thoughts focusing on the causes and complexity of terrorism; counterterrorist strategies and approaches, as well as the relationship between diversity and terrorist incidents. Following a general introduction to counterterrorism and diversity, the book is divided into four sections: the terrorism problem; the prevention of terrorism; community oriented counterterrorism and finally, case studies. With contributions from an outstanding group of international participants addressing this important global issue, the book will be of value to anyone with an interest in countering the terrorist threat.

Multi-Faceted Approach to Radicalization in Terrorist organizationsVolume 87 NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal DynamicsEditors: I. Bal, S. Ozeren and M.A. SozerSeptember 2011, 232 pp., softcoverISBN 978-1-60750-823-6 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-824-3 (online)Price: US$157 / €108 / £92

Terrorism, and the radicalization of terrorists in particular, has become a focus for academics and practitioners in recent years. However, the concept of radicalization has a variety of definitions and this is due in part to its relationship to other concepts with no clearly agreed definition, such as terrorism. Clarifying the intellectual background is important if the various trends in radicalization are to be properly understood. A clear picture of such trends is essential for the analysis of the radicalization process which will enable law enforcement agencies, academics and policymakers to develop tactics and strategies to counter such radicalization. This book presents the proceedings of the NATO 2010 Advanced Research

Workshop on Developing Prevention Strategies and Tactics in Countering Radicalization, held in Antalya, Turkey, in December 2010. This workshop reviewed the process through which an individual becomes radicalized, examining the concept of radicalization and presenting comparative perspectives from different countries. It sought to propose a model of prevention policy to target radicalization and present the fundamental dynamics of preventing radicalization. Topics addressed include militant identity building procedure, how radicalization is financed and preventive strategies to counter the use of sophisticated weapons. The book is an important addition to the field of countering terrorism and will be of interest to all practitioners, academics and policymakers involved in this endeavor.

Clinical Updates on Pain Syndromes: What can we learn from recent clinical updates on pain syndromes?

Use of Risk Analysis in Computer-Aided PersuasionVolume 88 NATO Science for Peace and Security Series - E: Human and Societal DynamicsEditors: E. Duman and A. AtiyaNovember 2011, 348 pp., hardcoverISBN 978-1-60750-827-4 (print)ISBN 978-1-60750-828-1 (online)Price: US$196 / €135 / £115

Defense systems, computer networks and financial systems are increasingly subject to attack by terrorists, fraudsters and saboteurs. New challenges require concerted action from researchers to develop successful designs for computer networks that are resilient to deliberate attacks, and capacities must be built into the network to allow for quick and automatic recovery with little or no interruption or loss. This book contains contributions to the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on The Use of Risk Analysis in Computer-Aided Persuasion held in Antalya, Turkey in May 2011. The goal has been to further the research and knowledge in the areas of combatting threats and risks to entities, systems and networks. The papers presented here fall into three categories. The first deals with fraud and financial systems. The second one considers threats to security and economic entities. The third group of papers considers computer network, IT and software threats. Cutting edge methods based on neural networks, social network analytics, Bayesian networks, decision trees and risk hedging have been proposed in these works to deal with these challenging problems.

can sometimes result in negative effects. Reference has often been made to other industries, particularly manufacturing, that would function more effectively and efficiently. Major differences between building and manufacturing include the organization and coordination of the supply chain. Supply chain integration has been suggested as a solution to the

deficiencies experienced in the building industry. The premise is that the supply chain would function better if the building industry could aim for the standards of a more integrated and repetitively operating industry. This publication aims to contribute to the theoretical and practical development of the concept of supply chain integration in the building industry.
