B BEAVER HOCKEY 2011-12 GAME NOTES BEMIDJI STATE HOCKEY THE MATCH UP The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team is back in the comfort of Sanford Center this weekend as it welcomes first-time visitor University of Denver for a Western Collegiate Hockey Association series. The Beavers, 6-8-2 overall and 4-6-2 in WCHA play, return to action after a three-point weekend at St. Cloud State University Dec. 2-3. The Beavers battled back from a pair of two-goal deficits to earn a 6-6 tie in the first game of the series before gaining a 3-1 victory Saturday. Home for just its fourth series of 2011-12, BSU is 3-2-1 at Sanford Center this season. Offensively, BSU continues to be lead by senior defenseman Brad Hunt (3-11=14). The newest member of the career 100 point club is also the team’s top assist man with 11, while Jordan George, the team’ leading scorer in 2010-11, paces the team with 10 goals and sits second in scoring (10-3=13). It’s been goalie by committee through BSU’s first 16 games as all three of the team’s goaltenders have seen time between the pipes. Dan Bakala has received the nod in eight of the last nine contests and brings a team-best 2.85 goals against average, a .906 save percentage and a 4-5-1 record into the series. Defensively speaking, BSU also enters the series owning the WCHA’s most efficient penalty-kill numbers after snuffing out 44 of its league opponents’ 52 power-play opportunities (.846). Denver (6-5-3; 4-3-3 WCHA), which comes into the series totting the nation’s No. 13 ranking in both major polls, arrives in Bemidji after a heart-breaking 4-3 loss to intrastate rival Colorado College in its only game last weekend and is 3-4-3 since Oct. 24th. Sophomore forward Jason Zucker, a 2010 draft pick of the Minnesota Wild, paces the Pioneer attack averaging nearly four goals per game with 20 points (8g-12a). Drew Shore is a close second with 19 points (6g-13a). Adam Mur- ray and Juho Olkinuora have split time between the pipes. Olkinuora leads the duo with a 2.20 goals against average and .923 save percentage, but Murray’s 5-2-1 and is third in the WCHA with a .750 winning percentage in league play. Dating back to 1967, DU leads the series 8-0-0, with a 7-0-0 edge since the Beavers made the move to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 season. last Week for tHe BeaversThe Beavers posted a tie and win at State Cloud State last weekend gaining three points in the WCHA standings. BSU battled back from a pair of two-goal deficits in a 6-6 draw at National Hockey Center Friday before earning a 3-1 victory Saturday to gain its first series win in St. Cloud since Dec. 9-10 1983.

last time versus deNverThe Beavers last met the Pioneers in the semifinal round of the 2011 Red Baron/WCHA Final Five March 18, 2011 at Xcel Energy Center. First period goals by Jordan George and Radoslav Illo put the Beavers up 2-1 after the first period and sent the teams to the third tied 2-2. Nick Shore gave DU the lead scoring a enven-strength goal 2:56 into the final period and the Pioneers followed up by adding three more, which included an empty-netter to earn the 6-2 win and advance to the championship game.

The Beavers garnered 30 points in the poll to six points behind University of Alaska-Anchorage. Denver University was forecast as the favorite to win the 2011-12 regular-season and the MacNaughton Cup. The Pioneers garnered seven of 12 first-place votes and 115 points to edge University of North Dakota (110).

BSU returns 59 percent of scoring for a year ago, which includes 62 percent of its assist scoring (90-of-145), 49 percent of its goal scoring (43-of-89).

Home sWeet HomeThe Beavers had to adapt to playing on the road quickly in 2011-12 as eight of their first 10 games of the season took place away from home in a string that concluded Nov. 5. Now BSU finds itself in the midst of playing 10-of-12 games at Sanford Center to wrap up the calendar year. The Beavers are 3-6-1 on the road this season and are 3-2-1 at home.

tHree is tHe magic NumBerIn 2010-11, the three-goal mark was a threshold for Bemidji State. The Beavers were 0-15-2 when allowing more than two goals and were 13-3-2 when scoring at least three. That trend has continued into 2011-12. This season, BSU is 5-1-2 when scoring in excess of three goals, and is 1-7-0 when scoring fewer than three.

media iNformatioNthe Beavers lit the lamp during the first minute of play three times a year ago. BSU was 10-8-2 when scoring first.

Bsu 18tH iN all-time WiNsBemidji State became the 18th program among the 58 current members of NCAA Divi-sion I to post its 900th all-time victory when it defeated Ala.-Huntsville, 3-2, on Dec. 15, 2006. BSU’s 987 victories currently rank 18th all-time among current members of Division I. Cornell is next ahead of BSU, in 17th all-time with 1,010 victories. Seventeen Division I programs have posted 1,000 wins, including 2011-12 BSU foe Minnesota which leads Divi-sion I with 1,644 all-time victories, and is the only program in the nation with 1,600 or more all-time wins, while Michigan is second with 1,541 victories.

180 iN tHe BooksIn his 11th season as a collegiate head coach, BSU’s bench boss tom serratore recently achieved another milestone--his 180th victory as a head coach in a 6-5 triumph over Michi-gan Tech Oct. 21, 2011. He is 184-154-40 (.540) since inheriting the Beaver hockey pro-gram from legendary R.H. “Bob” Peters prior to the 2001-02 season. Serratore is second at the school in victories by a head coach behind Peters, who posted 702 wins at BSU from 1966-2001.

ClimBing BSU’S DiviSion i aSSiStS li StBrad Hunt has accumulated 78 assists dur-ing his first 128 games, or just over three complete seasons as a Beaver to match BSU great Matt Read (2007-11) atop the BSU Di-vision I assists list and sit fourth on BSU’s all-time assist-scoring by defensemen list. With his next helper, he will solidify himself as BSU Division I assist king and move into a tie with Chris Morque (1990-94) and Paul Ferry (1989-93) for second on BSU’s All-Time Defenseman Assist List. Terry Mattson (1986-89), father of current Beaver freshman Danny Mattson, currently holds that title after piling up 81 helpers during his collegiate career.

Bsu versus tHe NatioNally-raNkedIn 2010-11 the Beavers played 17 games against teams holding down one of the na-tion’s top 15 rankings, which included three of the top four teams according to USA-Today and USA Hockey Magazine. BSU was 7-8-2 versus the nation’s top 15 last season. After going 0-5-1 versus nationally-ranked competition during the first two months of 2010-11, the Beavers are 8-4-1 versus the top 15 since Dec. 3. BSU is 2-6-0 versus the nationally-ranked in 2011-12 Since the Beavers made the jump to the NCAA Division I ranks for the 1999-2000 campaign, BSU is 16-51-4 (.254) versus teams in the top-15. With that said, BSU is now 14-16-2 (.469) versus the top 15 since the beginning of the 2008-09 campaign. In 23 meetings, this weekend marks the fifth and sixth times since 1999-2000 that BSU has faced an unranked North Dakota team.

offeNsive defeNsemaNJunior defenseman Brad Hunt has been a big factor for BSU on both ends of the ice since becoming a Beaver in 2008-09. In addition to his duties in BSU’s defensive zone, he has been a true offensive threat--especially on the power play. As a freshman, he was third on the team scoring 9-23=32 points with a team-leading 7-16=23 coming on the man advantage. As a sophomore he had seven goals and a team-leading 26 assists to pace all BSU defenders, while ranking sixth among the nation’s top blue-liners (0.89 ppg). His 17 points (5-12=17) on the power play again paced the team. Last season, he had two goals and 18 helpers. Twelve points (2-10=12) came on the man advantage to place him fourth on the team in power-play scoring. This season he enters the ninth week of play leading the team (3-11=14) in scoring and has three power-play points (0-3=3).

comeBack kidsThrough 16 games of the 2011-12 campaign, the Beavers have trailed in all but two games. In 974:19 minutes of play this season, BSU has had the lead for just 308:05 and 48:05 of lead time came in a 3-1 victory at St. Cloud State Dec. 3.

tHe HuNt for poWer-play goalsIn his fourth season, defenseman Brad Hunt has piled up 14 power-play goals, including seven in 2008-09, which matched a BSU Division I-era record for power-play goals by a defender. Hunt is currently tied with Clay Simmons (1999-02) for BSU’s Division I-era mark for power-play goals by a defenseman.

freaky fridayBSU was a meager 4-10-4 in the first game of the weekend series in 2010-11, while the team has experience much greater success, a 10-7-1 record, in the final game of a series. Ironically, this season BSU is 3-3-2 on Friday this season and 3-5-0 on Saturday.

maN advaNtageThe BSU power-play unit came up with its first power-play goal in eight games, 20 power-play opportunities and 479:32 minutes Nov. 20 versus North Dakota. It ended the longest span of time without a goal on the man advantage since the Beavers the move to the Division I level for the 1999-2000 season. The Beavers finished the series at St. Cloud Dec. 2-3 going 2-for-5 (.400) on the man advantage and have now scored a power-play goal in three straight games. The Beavers are 10-for-50 (.200) on the power-play this season, with a 9-or-39 (.231) on the man advantage in league play to rank sixth.

Read’s trip to the NHL makes seven products of the Beaver Hockey program to skate in the NHL ranks. He joins former BSU goaltender Matt Clime (2005-2009) and his teammate Andrew Murray (2001-05) as the only other former Bea-vers currently in the NHL.

In the 11 years since the Beavers moved to Division I, they have escaped overtime with at least a tie in 76 percent (67) of the 88 games that have needed extra time to decide the outcome. Since March 11, 2006, BSU is 12-6-19 in games extended to sudden death, including a 1-0-2 record in extra time in 2011-12.

With three points this weekend, he will match Paul Ferry (1989-93) for fifth on the all-time list with 103 career points and will bypass Brendan Cook (2001-05), who recorded 55-47=102 points as a Beaver, to hold down the fourth spot on BSU’s Division I-era scoring list.

Back iN tHe saddleBSU captain Ben Kinne is back in action this season after missing the entire 2010-11 season after suffering a stroke in the offseason. He has been practicing, is in good health and has played in each of the Beavers first 16 games. In his first two seasons at BSU he piled up 18-21=39 points and played a significant role on BSU’s power-play and penalty-kill units. He has 4-2=6 points in 2011-12.

BlUeline’S offenSive PUShThe Beavers’ got two goals and five assists from its defensive corps Dec. 2-3 at SCSU. it’S gooD to Be homeAfter eight of their first 10 games on the road, the Beavers are glad to be back on home ice for eight of the next 10. No two players are more excited to be back home than Brad Hunt and Shea Walters. Six of Hunt’s team leading 14 points have come in six games at Sanford Center, while Walters has scored three of his five goals in six games at home.

HiNts at tHe outcomeThe Beavers are 15-2-3 since 2008-09 when captain Ben Kinne scores a goal. This season Kinne has four goals and BSU is 2-1-1 in those contests. HigH-perceNtage sHootersThe Beavers were out shot 34-14 Dec. 3, but won the game 3-1--marking the lowest shot total in a win since a 14-shot victory at Colorado College Dec. 29, 2006.

Andrew Walsh also earned the award Oct. 25.

As Bemidji State has made inroads in its devel-opment as a Division I program, its progress in the classroom has been remarkable. In its 11th year under head coach Tom Serra-tore, the BSU program has become an academic juggernaut, annually dominating the academic honor roll while members of College Hockey America and have now carried that tradition on to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In addition, BSU has had 14 College Sports Information Directors of America Academic All-District V selections over the last eight years and has passed the NCAA’s first five Academic Prog-ress Rate performance checks with flying colors. Overall, the BSU men’s ice hockey team car-ries a cumulative GPA of over 3.5.

NCAA Academic Progress Rate Bemidji State men’s hockey received a score of 970 in the May 2009 release of the NCAA’s Aca-demic Progress Rate (APR) score. BSU helped the sport of men’s ice hockey achieve an aggre-gate score of 970, the third-highest of any men’s sport in the Division. The NCAA has established an APR cut rate of 925, which equates to a graduation rate of ap-proximately 50 percent, for all NCAA Division I sports. Programs which fail to meet the cut rate when 2006-07 numbers are added to the 2005-06 and 2004-03 data risk reductions in scholar-ships.

Academic All-WCHABSU led College Hockey America in Academic All-CHA honorees each of its final eight years in the league. In 2010-11, the Beavers began a new tradition of excellence in the WCHA. BSU led the Association with 21 of its 26-man roster earning a place on the Academic All-WCHA squad. In addition, Bemidji State placed a league-leading 11 players selected for the WCHA’s prestigious Scholar Athlete award. BSU has an all-time total of conference 161 Academic picks at the NCAA Division I level and 153 honorees have come in the last 10 years un-der head coach Tom Serratore.

CHA Student-Athlete of the YearKyle Hardwick was named 2010 CHA Student-Athlete of the year at the league’s 2010 awards banquet. The honor is the second to be garnered by a member of the BSU hockey team since the leagues inception. Andrew Murray became the first player in CHA history to be named Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year, picking up the historic sweep at the 2005 CHA awards banquet. Murray, a unanimous First-Team All-CHA pick, became the first BSU skater to be named CHA Student-Athlete of the Year.

Bemidji State ‘87 / 11th season at BSUu Five-Time CHA Coach of the Year (2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010)u Five-Time Spencer Penrose Award Finalist (2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010)

C onventional sports wisdom has long contended it is never wise to follow a legend. However, sporting a remarkable laundry-list of achievements after nearly nine years as head coach at Bemidji State, it appears Tom

Serratore is more than comfortable in the role. The legacy Serratore was asked to continue upon accepting the role as Bemidji State’s seventh head coach in 2001 is one of the finest in all of col-legiate athletics. Serratore walks by the trophy case on his way to practice each day, in full view of the 13 small-college national championship trophies enshrined therein, trophies won by future hockey Hall of Fame member R.H. “Bob” Peters. Serratore not only had the challenge of inheriting one of the true dynasties in the history of collegiate athletics, he also was called to oversee its growth into a Division I program. While Serratore will be the first to admit he’ll not be able to replicate Peters’ achievements, there can be little doubt the program is in the right hands. BSU finished 4-26-4 in 2000-01, the year before Serratore took control of the program. He led BSU to a 12-18-5 record during his rookie campaign and increased BSU’s win total each of the four years that followed. BSU finished 23-13-1 in 2004-05, giving the Beavers a school-record for wins in a Division I season and back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time as a Division I program. In 2008-09 Serratore led the Beavers through the regular season to post their fourth CHA championship in six years before their third CHA Tourna-ment championship, the program’s first NCAA Division I Tournament victory and a chance represent the university and the CHA in the Frozen Four for the first time. The 2009-10 campaign served as the Beaver’s last as a member of College Hockey America and Serratore’s BSU squad went out with a bang. The team posted a 23-10-4 overall record with a 14-3-1 mark in CHA play en route to the team’s third consecutive league regular-season championship and fifth in nine seasons as members of the league. Bemidji State capped the season by earning its first at-large bid and its fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Under Serratore’s guidance, 28 BSU skaters earned All-CHA honors, including two-time First-Team All-CHA picks Marty Goulet (2002-03), Bryce Methven (2003-04), Matt Climie (2006-07), Travis Winter (2006-07, Cody Bostock (2007-08), Brad Hunt (2009-2010) and Matt Read (2009-2010) with four Beavers earning CHA Rookie of the Year laurels. BSU had multiple skaters named First-Team All-CHA seven of its final eight seasons in the league, including a school-record three first-teamers in 2003. Academic excellence has been a staple of the BSU program under Serratore and that trend has continued in the WCHA. The Beavers had a 21 skaters named to the 2010-11 WCHA All-Academic Team with 11 players earning WCHA Scholar Athlete laurels--both numbers were far and away the highest among league member institutions. Under Serratore’s guidance have a league-high 153 student-athletes have been named to confer-ence all-academic teams over the last 10 years. In addition, BSU has had nine CoSIDA Academic All-District V selections during his reign, including 2005 First-Team Academic All-America selection Peter Jonsson. Serratore’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He is a five-time CHA Coach of the Year, winning the honor in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010 in 10 years as a collegiate head coach he has been named a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s National Coach of the Year, five times, including a runner-up finish in 2009. Serratore took the reigns as the seventh head coach at Bemidji State in 2001 after having spent the previ-ous three seasons as the associate head coach for Peters. Prior to coming to BSU, Serratore spent five years

OXFORD, Ohio (Steve Cady Arena) -- Junior forward aaron Mcleod scored twice and the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team got two goals in the final 6:10 of play to defeat No. 1 Miami University 5-3 at Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. After a shaky first period, BSU seemed to get better as the game rolled on. The tentative Beavers got whistled for a penalty early and the RedHawks capitalized, taking a 1-0 lead on a goal just 2:10 into the game. The power-play marker came off the backhand of Curtis McKenzie. BSU regrouped after allowing the early goal and despite trailing 1-0, held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Bemidji State shook the butterflies before the second period and knot-ted the score just 1:44 in. McLeod finished an end-to-end rush putting the puck over the shoulder of Cody Reichard for BSU’s first goal of the 2011-12 season. Sophomore Jeff Jubinville earned and assist on the play after carrying the puck into the neutral zone, fighting through a hook and put the puck on the stick of McLeod between the circles. The momentum would quickly switch ends as it took the top-ranked RedHawks just 1:32 to regain the lead (3:16). Chris Wideman funneled the puck to the net and Blake Coleman deflected it past BSU goaltender Dan Bakala and into the back of the cage. entering the final frame trailing by a goal, the Beavers netted four goals to solidify the win. Just over five minutes in (5:08), Jake areshenko potted his second col-legiate goal unleashing a shot form the point that glanced of the left post and off the skate of MU goaltender Reichard before sliding beyond the goal line. McLeod picked up his second point of the night as he and senior defender Brad Hunt earned assisted on the scoring play. McLeod would give the Beavers their first lead of the game, 3-2, when he netted and unassisted goal at the 8:30 mark of the period, but BSU would not make it easy on itself. Drew Fisher was whistled for a penalty with 6:10 left in the game. It took 1:40, but MU connected on its second power-play of the night when Alex Wideman tucked a rebound past Bakala. Bemidji State would gain momentum and the lead less than three min-utes later (18:05). Darcy Findlay intercepted a pass out of the corner and buried a backhand to put the Beavers up 4-3. BSU was called for its sixth penalty of the game immediately following the goal setting the RedHawks up on the man advantage for the final 1:50 of regulation. MU would later pull its goaltender, but David Boehm came up with the puck, found Sam Rendle and the Grand Rapids, Minn. native secured the 5-3 win with an empty-net goal. Bakala made 17 saves in the game, collecting his first win of the season (1-0-0). In the loss, Reichard (0-1-0) turned away 19 BSU shots and allowed four goals. Tonight’s game was a momentous occasion for three BSU players. Boehm, Matt Prapavessis and Tyler Tosunian each made their debuts for the Beavers. BSU has now won 41 of 56 season-openers all time and is 2-3-0 versus Miami, with both wins coming over the RedHawks when they carried the nations No. 1 ranking.

OXFORD, Ohio (Steve Cady Arena) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team went toe-to-toe with the nation’s top-ranked team, Miami Uni-versity, for 55 minutes Saturday, but a short-handed goal by Matt Tomassoni in the game’s final minutes proved too much as the RedHawks earned a 3-2 victory to split in the season-opening, nonconference series in Oxford, Ohio. Bemidji State alternate captain Brad Hunt collected a pair of assists, his second and third of 2011-12, in the game to lead the Beavers and BSU con-verted its first power-play goal in six chances this season, but it was special teams situations that ultimately cost BSU the game. The Beavers put the RedHawks on a 5-on-3 power-play opportunity late in the second frame to allow MU to tied the score 2-2 and a power-play miscue led to the short-handed, go-ahead goal with just under five minutes to go in the third. For the second consecutive night, Miami was the first to light the score-board. Tomassoni took a pass from Austin Czarnik and beat BSU goaltender Dan Bakala at the 8:06 mark of the first period to put MU up 1-0. Trailing 1-0 to open the second period, Shea Walters collected a loose puck on the doorstep and buried his first goal of the season. Hunt got the play started with a shot form the blueline. Orban picked up the shot off the boards and left it in front for Walters and the Beavers converted their first power-play chance of the season. Just over six minutes later (10:20) the Beavers took the lead, 2-1, when Jordan George put a rebound past the Miami goaltender Connor Knapp for his first tally of 2011. Captain Ben Kinne and Hunt were credited with assists on the play. Following the goal BSU’s Radoslav Illo and Jake areshenko were called for slashing penalties separated by just 14 seconds to gave the RedHawks a 1:46 5-on-3 opportunity. Miami took full advantage of the chance scoring the equalizing goal just 63 seconds later on a Chris Wideman slapshot from the blueline. With 5:26 to play and the score knotted at 2-2, the Beavers got the break it needed when Steven Spinell was whistled for slashing. The penalty supplied the Beavers with their fourth power-play opportunity of the evening. But it was the RedHawks that would use the opportunity to snatched the lead. When Matt Prapavessis fell trying to keep the puck in the zone, MU’s Trent Vogel-huber picked up the puck and led the short-handed rush with a shot. Bakala made the initial save, but Tomassoni was there to put the rebound past the BSU goaltender and give the nation’s top-ranked team the lead for good. As time wound down, the Beavers pulled Bakala for an extra attacker, but were unable to score to force overtime. Bakala finished with 23 saves in 58:57 of action. He allowed three goals as his record evens at 1-1-0 on the season. Each teamed completed the night 1-for-4 on the man advantage, with MU’s short-handed marker standing as the decisive goal. BSU his now 2-4-0 versus Miami all-time.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (World Arena) -- Bemidji State University new-comer Mitch Cain netted a goal in his first collegiate game, but that was all the offense the Beavers could muster as No. 8 Colorado College capitalized on a pair of turnovers to spoil BSU’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association opener, 3-1, Friday at World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo. After playing 20 minutes without a goal, the teams combined for three goals in the second, CC took a 2-1 advantage into the third period and would not look back adding a third goal early in the third period to put the game out of reach. The Tigers seemed to multiply the effect of the extra space on its 200-by-100-foot Olympic ice sheet scoring a pair of 4-on-4 goals in the game. The Beavers and Tigers used a large portion of the first period to feel each other out. The teams finished the period with eight shots on goal apiece and the score locked at 0-0. Colorado College came out of the first intermission as the clear aggres-sors putting four of the first five shots on net. The teams began the period play-ing 4-on-4 and it took CC just 25 seconds to take the first lead of the game. Gabe Guentzel capitalized on a BSU turnover netting a goal on a slapshot from the blueline. The Beavers climbed back into the game, knotting the score at 1-1 at the 6:41 mark. BSU newcomer Cain was rewarded for persistence after crashing the net and slipping a rebound past CC goaltender Joe Howe. In his collegiate debut, the goal stands as the first of Cain’s BSU career. Jake areshenko fun-neled the puck toward the net and Brance Orban, who centered the puck to the slot, were credited with assists on the scoring play. CC regained the lead, 2-1, eight minutes later (14:40) on its second 4-on-4 goal of the game. Jaden Schwartz scored his first goal of the season after holding the puck long enough to force BSU goaltender Dan Bakala to commit and buried a shot in the virtually open net. The Tigers’ lead swelled to 3-1 at the 5:45 mark of the third period. De-fender Michael Boivin beat Bakala with a backhand from the left circle. With 2:00 minutes left in regulation, BSU Head Coach tom serratore pulled BSU’s goaltender in favor of an extra attacker and just moments into play, the tactic resulted in a Brad Hunt slap shot ringing off the left post, but that was as close as the Beavers would come. Although the team held the puck in the zone for all but the final 10 seconds, it was unable to get the puck through traffic to find the back of the net. Bakala was tested often tonight. He made 25 saves and helped the BSU penalty-kill unit hold a high-octane offensive CC team scoreless on four power-play opportunities. He falls to 1-2-0 on the season. Howe earned the win turning away 25 of 26 BSU shots. In addition to Cain, tonight’s game was one to remember for Danny Matt-son also made his debut in the green and white. The BSU-CC series is now at 4-2-1 all-time, while CC owns a 4-1-0 ad-vantage versus the Beavers in Colorado Springs, Colo.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (World Arena) -- Holding the lead on four dif-ferent occasions, which included a 4-3 edge to open the third period, the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team saw No. 8 Colorado College score three unanswered goals during the final 20 minutes as the Tigers out-lasted the Beavers to gain a 6-4 victory and a series sweep. Shea Walters and Radoslav Illo each posted career nights for the Bea-vers recording a goal to go with two assists, while Brance Orban added a pair of assists, but BSU was unable to match the firepower on the CC line up. On the strength of a hat trick from Ryan Schwartz and three points (1-2=3) from brother Jaden and Scott Winkler, the Tigers’ potent offense was too much for the Beavers down the stretch. Bemidji State drew first blood for the first time all season when Walters put a rebound back from the left post on the power play. Illo, who took the initial shot, and Orban were credited with assists on the play. A delayed-penalty situation allowed CC even the score at the 11:34 mark of the first period. Jeff Collett wrapped around the goal and stuffed the puck past BSU goaltender Mathieu Dugas, who was in the net for his first start of the season. The Beavers regained the lead at the 16:08 mark on a tremendous effort by newcomer Mitch Cain. The rookie picked up the puck on BSU’s own blue line and skated into the offensive zone before getting a backhand off the pads of the CC goalie. Linemate Drew Fisher followed on the play and pocketed the rebound to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead. Despite trailing 13-9 in shots on goal, the Beavers took a 2-1 lead into the locker room after 20 minutes of play. The lead would last only 37 seconds. CC won the second period’s open-ing face off and when Winkler deflected a shot off R. Schwartz’s skate in front and past Dugas. BSU used its third power-play opportunity to regain the lead. Ben Kinne buried a one-timer from the top of the left circle with just 12 seconds left on the man advantage. The goal was the first of the season for Kinne and the first since he scored Mar. 13, 2010. The junior sat out the entire 2010-11 season after suffering a stroke. After R. Schwartz knotted the score at 3-3 15:54 into the second, BSU capitalized on its fourth power-play chance. Illo netted his first goal of the season and his third point of the night when a blistering slap shot from the point found its way through traffic at the 18:19 mark. Orban and Walters were credited with assists on the scoring play giving each his second assist of the evening. After 40 minutes and four goals allowed, Colorado College head coach Scott Owens elected to pull goaltender Josh Thorimbert for Joe Howe to begin the third period. The change served as a spark for the Tigers. Howe posted a perfect 11-save period and gained the win in net as the CC attack potted a trio of goals. Dugas was tagged with the loss after allowing five goals, but posted 33 saves in 59:50 between the pipes in his first appearance since a Jan. 22, 2011 start versus St. Cloud State University. Following the loss, BSU trails CC in the all-time series 2-5-1, while CC owns a 5-1-0 advantage versus the Beavers in Colorado Springs, Colo.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team battled back from a two-goal deficit early and held off a late rally to hand Michigan Technological University its first loss of the season 6-5 in the Beavers’ 2011-12 home-opener Friday evening at Sanford Center. Eleven different BSU players found the scoring column in the game, led by Jordan George and Brance Orban, who each netted two goals, and Matt Prapavessis who posted a career-high two assists. Junior captain Ben Kinne opened an action-packed first period that saw seven goals scored with is second lamplighter of the season at the 2:51 mark on a wrist shot from between the circles. George and Prapavessis were cred-ited with assists on the play. Carl Nielsen tied the score 6:17 mark sparking a run of three goals by the Huskies, including tallies by David Johnstone and Blake Pietila, to take a 3-1 lead 12:49 into the first. Following MTU’s third goal, BSU head coach tom serratore quickly pulled goaltender starting goaltender Dan Bakala and inserted andrew Walsh. The move proved to stir a BSU comeback as the newcomer’s team-mates responded by potting three goals during the final four minutes of the period and took a 4-3 advantage into the first intermission. George started the flurry with his second goal of the season at the 16:52 mark. He added a rebound goal from the right post 56 seconds later (17:48) to knot the score at 3-3 before Orban finished a nifty display of power-play passing from Jamie MacQueen and Shea Walters as the Beavers’ regained the lead, 4-3, with just 1:16 remaining in the first period. Bemidji State’s lead swelled to two goals on an unassisted marker by Orban at the 10:32 mark of the second frame. Leading 5-3 to open the third period, the Beavers scored their fifth unan-swered goal 8:17 mark. Brad Hunt recorded the first goal of his senior season on a slapshot from the point just moments after the Beavers’ fifth power-play opportunity of the evening had expired. Three minutes later, the Huskies reeled the Beavers to within two goals, 6-4, when Alex McLeod collected a Steven Seigo attempt that rung off the right post and deposited it into the back of the net for his first of the 2011-12 season. The Huskies put the Beavers on the ropes late as Seigo added a goal through traffic with 33 seconds remaining. MTU would pull its goaltender in the game’s final moments and would generate two quality scoring changes with the extra attacker, but was unable to penetrate the goal as the Beavers escaped with a 6-5 victory. BSU out shot the Huskies 34-23 and went 1-for-6 on the power play, while its penalty-kill unit was flawless snuffing out all four of MTU’s power-play op-portunities. Walsh posted 17 saves and allowed two goals in relief of Bakala. The rookie gained the victory in his collegiate debut. Josh Robinson was tagged with the loss after he allowed all six of the Beavers’ goals. He turned away 28 BSU shots in the game as he fell to 4-1-0 on the season.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Rookie goaltender Andrew Walsh turned away 31 Michigan Technological University shots, while captain Ben Kinne recorded a goal an assist to lead the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 3-1 victory Saturday at Sanford Center. The win allows the Beavers to complete the series sweep of the Huskies. The Beavers found themselves down 1-0 after a sluggish first period, but bounced back in the second to net a pair of goals and used a solid defensive effort to even its record at 3-3-0 on the season and 2-2-0 in league play. The Huskies’ persistent play in the first led to an early 1-0 lead. Alex McLeod forced a rebound under the pads of Walsh at the 7:56 mark and fin-ished the period with a 12-5 lead in shots on goal. Whistled for five penalties in the second period, Michigan Tech found itself short a man for 6:10 and an energized Beavers’ line up made the Huskies pay. BSU posted a pair of power-play markers in four opportunities and skated out of the second with a 2-1 advantage. Just 33 seconds into Bemidji State’s second man advantage opportunity of the evening (9:41), Shea Walters took a pass from Kinne to knot the score at 1-1 with the third goal of his senior campaign. The Beavers gained a 2-1 lead at the 18:54 mark on Kinne’s third marker of the season. Radoslav Illo collected the puck on the neutral zone changed directions and found Brance Orban on the blueline. Orban shifted the puck to Kinne streaking down the slot and the junior converted the one-on-one op-portunity on the power-play. Bemidji State would add another goal at the 12:26 mark of the third period on Drew Fisher’s second marker of the season and Walsh would take care of the rest. Despite being out shot 32-16 in the game, BSU pulled out the victory. Walsh recorded 31 saves and allowed just one goal collecting a win in his first collegiate start. He improves to 2-0-0 on the season. BSU finished the game 2-for-7 on the power-play, while its penalty-kill unit was flawless killing all four of the Huskies man advantage opportunities. The win extends the Beavers’ unbeaten streak versus the Huskies to six games (5-0-1) as BSU improved to 5-2-1 in the all-time BSU/MTU series. BSU is a perfect 4-0-0 versus Michigan Tech in games played in Bemidji, Minn.

DULUTH, Minn. (AMSOIL Arena) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team netted goals on its first two shots of the night, but the defend-ing national champion University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs responded with six unanswered goals to earn a 6-2 victory over the beavers Friday in the Beavers first trip to AMSOIL Arena. The early 2-0 deficit served as a wake up call as the Bulldogs as UMD would go on to dominate play, out shooting the Beavers 40 -17 in the game. The Beavers’ first goal came just 6:21 into the first period when Brad Hunt followed Jeff Jubinville and aaron Mcleod the net and put the puck past UMD goaltender Kenny Reiter for his second goal of the season. McLeod and Jubinville were credited with assists on the scoring play. BSU built a two-goal lead 65 seconds later. David Boehm found Jordan George behind the Bulldogs’ back line. George carried the puck into the zone and got a shot off. Reiter got a piece of it, but the puck trickled across the goal line for the junior’s third goal in the last three games. But the BSU lead would not last long. Out shot 15-5 in the first period, freshman goaltender Andrew Walsh, making his second collegiate start, was tested early and often and both UMD goals in the frame came when BSU was unable to corral rebounds. The first came at 8:21 when Walsh turned away four point-blank Bulldog shots, but Wade Bergman netted a goal form the right post when the Bea-vers were unable to clear the puck. The second came at the 13:24 mark of the period when J.T. Brown slipped a rebound past Walsh to tie the game at 2-2. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game at the 8:15 mark of the second period. After killing a pair of UMD power-plays, in the opening mo-ments of the period, Keegan Flaherty slid the puck between the skates of Walsh to put the Bulldogs up 3-2 and the defending champs would not look back. Just 77 second later, Chris Casto scored his first collegiate goal to put the Bulldogs up 4-2 heading into the third period. The Bulldogs took a 5-2 when Brady Lamb converted the Bulldogs’ first power-play goal of the evening at the 7:11 mark of the third. The goal came with just two second remaining on UMD’s fifth man advantage opportunity of the game, snapping a string of 11 consecutive penalties killed by BSU. UMD finished the game 1-for-5 on the power-play, while holding the Beavers scoreless on their only two power-play opportunities of the night. The Bulldogs finally build a four-goal lead, 6-2, at the 11:07 mark of the third when Jack Connolly capped and end-to-end individual effort with a wrist shot that found the back of the net. Walsh made 34 saves in the game, but allowed six UMD goals and was tagged with the loss. He falls to 2-1-0 on the season. On the other end of the ice Reiter stopped 15 of 17 BSU shots to gain the win. He improves to 3-2-1 in 2011-12. The victory gives the Bulldogs a 20-10-1 record in the all-time series, while BSU is 8-5-1 in the last 14 meetings.

DULUTH, Minn. (AMSOIL Arena) -- No. 15 University of Minnesota Duluth earned a 1-0 victory versus the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team Saturday in a true defensive battle at AMSOIL Arena. It took more than 51 minutes of play, but Jack Connolly would net a pow-er-play goal at the 11:21 mark of the third period to break a scoreless tie and give Minnesota Duluth all the offense it would need as the Bulldogs’ goaltender Kenny Reiter would turn away all 25 Bemidji State shots for his first shutout of 2011-12. After allowing the UMD to pepper Friday’s goaltender Andrew Walsh (Fr., G, Dawson Creek, British Columbia) with 40 shots as the team surrendered six goals, the Beavers bounced back Saturday with a solid defensive effort, but were unable to capitalize on any offensive opportunities. Tied 0-0 at the end of 20 minutes of play, the Beavers held an 8-6 advan-tage in shots on goal. The stalemate continued through the end of the second period, however, UMD out shot BSU 13-11. BSU got its best scoring chance of the night at the 8:58 mark of the second when Luke McManus hauled Brance Orban (Jr., F, Lethbridge, Alberta) down in the act of shooting. The officials awarded Orban with a penalty shot, but Reiter kicked the attempt to the side to send the teams into the final 20 minutes of regulation with the score tied 0-0 with each team having 19 shots on goal. Minnesota Duluth looked to get the break it would need to pull ahead early in the third. Just 43 seconds in, BSU senior forward Darcy Findlay (Bristol, Quebec), who was skating in his first game since suffering an injury in the Beavers’ Oct. 8 contest at Miami University, was whistled for a major penalty and game misconduct, setting the Bulldogs up with a five-minute power-play opportunity. But BSU responded, holding UMD scoreless and allowing the Bulldogs just one shot on goal during the opportunity. The kill, swung momentum in BSU’s favor, but it was unable to take ad-vantage. Four minutes and 41 seconds later, Bemidji State again found itself down a man when David Boehm (Jr., F, Naples, Fla.) was booked for tripping. The penalty put the Bulldogs on the power-play for the fifth time and it would take them just 51 seconds for them to find the back of the net. For the second consecutive night, UMD finished 1-of-5 on the power-play, while BSU had nothing to show for its two man advantage opportunities. After allowing the Beavers to score on their first two shots in the series, the Minnesota Duluth goaltender stopped BSU’s next 40 shots and held the Beavers scoreless for the final 112:54 of the series as he backstopped the Bulldogs to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series sweep. Reiter’s shutout stands as the first rime BSU has been held scoreless since a 2-0 loss at Wisconsin Dec. 11, 2010. The last time BSU lost a 1-0 game was Dec. 15, 2007 versus Minnesota State. BSU goaltender Dan Bakala (Sr., Calgary, Alberta) posted 27 saves in his return to the line up. He allowed the game’s only goal and was pegged with the loss. He falls to 1-3-0 on the season. The victory gives the Bulldogs a 21-10-1 record in the all-time series, while BSU still holds an 8-6-1 advantage in the last 15 meetings.

SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Mich. (Taffy Abel Arena) -- Jordan George scored with 41.1 seconds left in overtime to lift the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 nonconference victory over No. 13 Lake Superior State University Friday night at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. Despite being out played for large portions of the first and second periods, the Beavers bucked down late and got the bounce when it mattered escaping with a series-opening victory. The Beavers hand the Lakers their second loss of the season (7-2-0), while improving to 4-5-0 on the season. Bemidji State struggled to generate offensive opportunities early, but when the Beavers got a chance, they capitalized. BSU scored on its first shot of the game and would add another goal on its third shot, taking a 2-0 over the nationally-ranked Lakers just 14:51 into the game. Jamie MacQueen got the Beavers on the board. He took a deflected shot from end to end for his first goal of the season 4:24 after the opening faceoff. At the 14:51 mark of the first, Shea Walters netted his fourth goal of 2011-12 when he corralled a loose puck on the back door and put it past the LSSU goaltender to put BSU up 2-0. Darcy Findlay and Brad Hunt were credited with assists on the play. Trailing 2-0 after 20 minutes of play, the No. 13 Lakers battled back in the second out shooting the Beavers 10-6 and scoring the only goal of the period on a shot from Kevin Czuczman. Momentum swung in BSU’s favor in the third. The Beavers sustained pressure in their offensive zone and created their own opportunities on a regu-lar basis for the first time all night. BSU finished the period with a 12-8 ad-vantage in shots, but at the 6:53 mark of the third, Lake Superior State added another even-strength goal to send the Beavers to overtime for the first time this season. With the score knotted at 2-2 and less than a minute to play in overtime, the Lakers had one of their best scoring opportunities of the night, but Dan Bakala stood tall despite playing without his stick. He made the save and swatted the puck out of the crease with his blocker. Brady Wacker collected the puck and made a pass to David Boehm which set up the eventual game-winning goal by George. Bakala finished the night with 24 saves to gain his second victory of 2011-12 and improve to 2-3-0 in the season. He also backstopped a BSU penalty-kill unit which held the Lakers scoreless in three opportunities (0-3). Kevin Kapalka turned aside 23 BSU shots in the loss. He falls to 7-2-0. Although BSU won the game, it still trails the Lakers in the all-time series. LSSU continues to hold a 21-17-2 advantage ince the series began in 1966, which includes a 10-9-1 record versus the Beavers in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich.

SAULT SAINTE MARIE, Mich. (Taffy Abel Arena) -- No. 13 Lake Superior State University dominated play early and clung to a one-goal lead late to salvage a 2-1 victory over the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team and a nonconference series split at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Sainte Marie, Mich. Saturday. For the second straight night, the Beavers were sluggish out of the gates, but tonight, Lake Superior State took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission to prove it. Just 1:13 into the game, Jake areshenko was whistled for hooking, set-ting the Lakers up on their first power-play opportunity of the evening. Zach Trotman would convert on the man advantage opportunity 50 seconds later (2:03). In addition to the 1-0 lead, LSSU took an 18-1 edge in shots into the locker room after 20 minutes of play. Clutching a one-goal lead, the Lakers again went on the power-play 4:13 into the second period, but this time the short-handed situation served as a wake up call for the Beavers. BSU got a solid short-handed scoring opportu-nity during the LSSU power-play chance and would go on to get 11 shots off during the course of the next eight minutes capped by a goal. BSU’s only tally of the game came off the stick of Shea Walters at the 14:22 mark of the second period to knot the score at 1-1. Radoslav Illo got the scoring play started with a staunch forecheck to punch the puck to Brance Orban on the wing, who found Walters on the doorstep. The goal was Walters’ fifth of the season marking a new single-season high for the senior. The Beavers controlled play for a large portion of the third period, out shooting the Lakers 13-6, but it was LSSU that would score the only goal of theperiod to secure the win. Kyle Pobur corralled a loose puck off a BSU turnover and skated virtually end-to-end to score the game-winning goal at the 3:18 mark of the period. With just under six minutes to play, the Beavers looked to have the score evened at 2-2, but a review of the goal showed a BSU player was in the crease and the goal was waved off. BSU would make one more push to extend the game to overtime pulling its goaltender with 90 seconds to play. The Beavers attempted five shots and applied sustained pressure with the extra attacker, but were unable to come up with a goal to show for it. Out shot 29-21 in the game, including a 23-8 differential after 40 minutes, Bemidji State’s Andrew Walsh turned away 27 shots but was tagged with the loss after allowing both Lakers’ goals. His record moves to 2-2-0 on the season. In his first collegiate start, LSSU goaltender Kevin Murdock made 20 saves to pick up his first victory in a Laker uniform. The BSU power-play unit was held scoreless for the third straight game going 0-for-2 on the man advantage. Netting the first goal of the game, LSSU was 1-for-4 on the man advan-tage.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Junior forward Jordan George scored with 58 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and the Bemidji State Uni-versity men’s ice hockey team would escape with a 3-3 tie versus the Univer-sity of Nebraska-Omaha Friday at Sanford Center. Opening the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) series with a tie, the Beavers’ move to 4-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play, while extend-ing its unbeaten streak versus the Mavericks to seven games (5-0-2)--dating back to Feb. 27, 2009. Widely out played for long stretches all night, the Beavers were out shot 43-25, which included a 15-6 deficit during the first 20 minutes of play alone. UNO took the Sanford Center crowd out of the game early. Josh Ar-chibald scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Mavericks up 1-0 just 7:48 after the opening face off. The Beavers began to crawl back into the game with an even-strength goal from Ben Kinne at the 15:51 mark. George and Brad Hunt (Sr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) were credited with assists on the play, sending the teams into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Beavers took their first and only lead of the game just 45 seconds into the second period. Brady Wacker deposited his first goal of the season, and second of his career, on a shot through traffic from the point after picking off an attempt to clear the puck by the Mavericks. UNO again tied the game, 2-2, at the 7:58 mark of the third period on Terry Broadhurst’s team-leading ninth goal of the season, collecting a Matt White shot attempt off the back wall and found the back of the net from the right post. Jayson Megna gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead to finish the second period lighting the lamp on a deflection in front of the net with just two seconds left in the stanza. BSU would trail Nebraska-Omaha for the first 19 minutes of the final frame, but when Hunt played the puck around the back of the net to Matt Prapavessis who found George streaking with a tape-to-tape, 100-foot pass that led to the junior’s team-leading sixth goal of the season. George and Hunt led the Beavers with two points apiece. George finished with a goal and an assist, while Hunt posted a pair of helpers. Dan Bakala turned aside a season-high 40 sots to backstop the Beavers to the tie. He moves to 2-3-1 on the season. BSU came up dry on its two power-play opportunities (0-2), while the Bea-ver penalty-kill continues to play well snuffing out four of the Mavericks’ five man advantage opportunities. Bemidji State continues to cling to the slimmest advantage in the all-time series (6-5-2), while it remains unbeaten on its home ice in 2011-12 (2-0-1).

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- Terry Broadhurst scored twice and Jay-son Megna added a pair of assists to lift the University of Nebraska-Omaha over the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team in Western Collegiate Hockey Association play Saturday at Sanford Center. Owning a 2-1 lead heading into the third period, the Mavericks netted three goals during the final 20 minutes to pull away handing BSU its first set-back at home this season and ending the Beavers’ seven-game unbeaten streak in the series (5-0-2) dating back to Feb. 27, 2009. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Darcy Findlay accounted for the Bea-vers’ only goal of the night at the 5:24 mark of the second period tying the game 1-1. Brad Hunt (Sr., D, Ridge Meadows, British Columbia) unleashed a shot from the point that was deflected in front by Findlay. Matt Prapavessis was also credited with assists on the goal. Broadhurst gave UNO the lead for good at the 8:02 mark of the second. The Mavericks took a 3-1 lead 3:06 into the third when Broadhurst netted UNO’s only power-play of the evening with help from Alex Hudson and Jayson Megna. Nebraska-Omaha would finish the game 1-for-5 on the man advan-tage. With just under five minutes to play, BSU head coach tom serratore rolled the dice and pulled goaltender Dan Bakala for an extra attacker. The gamble would backfire as Josh Archibald would record an empty-net goal to put UNO up 4-1 with 4:12 to play. Brent Gwidt added the Mavericks’ final goal of the game at the 16:44 mark of the third period settling the score at 5-1. Nebraska-Omaha dominated play during the final two periods out shoot-ing the Beavers 33-12 and finished the night with a 41-21 edge in shots on goal. Bakala turned aside 36 shots and allowed four goals in the loss. He falls to 2-4-1 on the season. UNO’s John Falkner made nine of his 20 saves in the first period and backstopped a penalty-kill unit that held the Beavers scoreless on four power-play opportunities, marking the second consecutive night the Beavers have come up without a goal on the man advantage (0-for-6). The win continued UND’s long-standing reign in the series. The Fighting Sioux have now won the last 14 head-to-head match ups between the teams and own a 22-1-1 record in the all-time series. The Beavers were the first to strike, getting a goal from Brance Orban at the 1:22 mark of the first period. Freshman Mitch Cain won an offensive zone face off to the junior and Orban ripped a shot past the UND goaltender Aaron Dell for his third goal of the season. Four minutes and 38 seconds later (6:49), the Fighting Sioux tied the score on a rebound goal by Corban Knight. The goal came just six seconds into UND’s first power-play opportunity of the evening. The team would finish the game 2-for-4 on the man advantage capitalizing on another power-play op-portunity late in the third to put the game out of reach. Ties 1-1 to open the second period, North Dakota broke the deadlock at the 4:30 mark of the period on a Brenden O’Donnell lamplighter. The goal would stand as the only maker of the second period giving the visiting Sioux a one-goal edge as the third period got underway. Forward Shea Walters scored his career-high sixth goal of the season just 72 seconds into the third period to even the score at 2-2. Brady Wacker found Walters open on the right post the senor converted. Jamie MacQueen was also credited with an assist on the play. When MacQueen was sent to the box for hooking at the 4:49 mark of the third, all momentum seemed to swing in North Dakota’s favor. Although the team was held scoreless during the two-minute the power-play chance, UND attempted 12 shots, getting five on target. The Sioux controlled play for the remainder of the period and got the back breaking goal with just 4:38 left in regulation. Brock Nelson would add a power-play goal at the 18:30 mark and an empty-net tally with 29 seconds on the clock to put the game out of reach. The Fighting Sioux finished the game with a 36-25 edge in shots on goal despite trailing BSU 11-7 after the first period. BSU was 0-for-2 on the man advantage marking the seventh consecutive game they have be held scoreless on the man advantage. Dan Bakala played 59:41 between the pipes for the Beavers and posted 31 saves. Allowing four UND goals, he fell to 2-5-1 on the season.

BEMIDJI, Minn. (Sanford Center) -- The Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team has piled up nearly 1,000 victories in 56 years of hockey history, but since Feb. 7, 1970, none of them have come against University of North Dakota until Sunday night. Jordan George’s second period power-play lamp-lighter proved to be the only goal of the game as Dan Bakala turned aside 26 Fighting Sioux shots en route to a 1-0 victory and his seventh career shutout. The BSU win ended a 41-year drought versus UND and snapped North Dakota’s 14-game winning streak in the all-time series. UND still holds a 22-2-1 record in the all-time series. After a scoreless first period, the Beavers got the break they needed at the 7:56 mark of the second period. UND’s Mark MacMillian was whistled for tripping and before the Fighting Sioux could coral the puck, Andrew MacWil-liam took an interference penalty setting BSU up with a two-minute 5-on-3 power-play opportunity. One-minute, 12-seconds into the penalty, George collected a rebound off the left pad of North Dakota goaltender Aaron Dell and roofed his team-leading seventh goal of the season. The goal marked an end to another significant drought for the Beavers. BSU’s last goal on the man advantage came Oct. 22--a scoreless streak spanning eight games and 20 power-play opportunities. Senior defender Brad Hunt inched closer to BSU great and former team-mate Matt Read (2007-11) with an assist on BSU’s scoring play. With 76 as-sists during his collegiate career, he is just two helpers from BSU’s Division I-era assists mark. The Beavers clung to 1-0 lead through the remainder of the second de-spite taking two penalties late in the period. The third period has been an Achilles heel for the Beavers in 2011-12. Through 13 games, BSU had been out scored 19-8 in the third, which includes a 15-4 deficit in the final period of WCHA contests, but the Beavers buckled down and killed nine minutes of penalties, included a five-minute major, to keep the Fighting Sioux of the scoreboard. Defensively, Bemidji State was solid from the opening face off to the final horn. In addition to Bakala’s shutout, the team piled up 21 blocked shots. BSU’s penalty-kill unit was a perfect 6-for-6 on the night, while its power-play finished with a goal on three man advantage chances. Bakala improved to 3-5-1 on the season.

ST. CLOUD, MINN. (National Hockey Center) -- Junior Jordan George scored two goals and posted an assist to lead the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey team to a 6-6 tie with St. Cloud State University Friday at National Hockey Center. aaron Mcleod added a pair of goals and Brad Hunt posted two assists as nine BSU players had a hand in scoring. In a wild Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) contest that saw 12 goals scored, four lead changes and the score tied on four occasions, the Beavers rallied from a pair of two-goal deficits to earn a tie and a point in the league standings. Bemidji State was first to strike in a high-tempo, five-goal first period. McLeod redirected a pass from Jamie MacQueen between the pads of SCSU’s freshman goaltender Ryan Faragher to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead 5:03 into the game. St. Cloud State would respond with a Nick Oliver goal at the 11:31 mark of the period and would get goals from Ben Hanowski and Taylor Johnson during the next 4:14 to extend its lead to 3-1 with 4:15 to go in the first. But the Huskies would commit a costly turnover in their own zone and Bemidji State would make them pay. Jeff Jubinville picked up the puck and placed a nifty pass on the stick of George, who pocketed a backhand over Faragher to reel the Beavers to within a goal, 3-2, before the first period expired (17:23). In a penalty-riddled second period, the Beavers and Huskies each got seven shots on goal and netted a power-play marker, but the Beavers man-aged to record an even-strength goal to even the score at 4-4 after 40 minutes. George registered his second goal of the night at the 1:25 mark of the sec-ond, just 39 seconds into the Beavers’ first power-play opportunity of the night. Brady Wacker posted the first of his two points on the night (1-1=2), scoring his second goal of the season at the 3:30 mark to put the Beavers up 4-3, before SCSU bounced back with a Hanowski power-play marker at the 9:16 mark that would knot the game 4-4. George was credited with an assist on the play. Tied 4-4 to open the third, the Huskies got goals from Travis Novak and Jordy Christian to take a 6-4 lead just 5:42 into the frame. But the resilient Beavers would not back down. After sitting out of BSU’s last three games due to injury, Radoslav Illo sparked the team’s second comeback with an unassisted goal at the10:06 mark of the third. He skated from end to end and scored stick side for his second goal of the season. Just over three minutes later (13:23), McLeod took a pass from Matt Prapavessis, skated down the slot, got the goaltender to commit low and roofed his second goal of the night to settle the score at 6-6. Hunt was also credited with an assist on the play, his team-leading 11th of the season and 78th of his career, matching BSU great Matt Read (2008-11) for BSU’s Division I-era assists record (78). The score would stay locked at 6-6 through the end of regulation and despite out shooting SCSU 5-3 and dominating the extra period, the Beavers would settle for the tie on the road marking just the third point taken by BSU on the Huskies’ ice since Mar. 7, 1987. Despite getting just two power-play opportunities on the night, BSU won the special teams battle finishing 1-for-2 (.500) on the man advantage, while snuffing out two of the Huskies’ three power-play chances, holding the hosts to just one shot on the power-play. Relieving Bakala at the 15:45 mark of the first period, Andrew Walsh was credited with the tie. He allowed three goals in 49:15 and piled up 14 saves, which included three stops in overtime. He moves to 2-2-1 in his career. The Beavers continue to hold an edge in the all-time series 44-39-4.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (National Hockey Center) -- Brad Hunt became the sixth defenseman in the history of the Bemidji State University men’s ice hockey program to eclipse the 100-point mark Saturday netting the game-winning goal to lead the Beavers to a 3-1 victory at St. Cloud State University. Defense and special teams stood tall for the Beavers in a game riddled with penalties. The BSU penalty-kill snuffed out all five of the Huskies’ power-play opportunities, allowing just five shots on goal in 9:06, which included a five-minute major, while the power-play unit recorded a goal in three chances. On the back end, Dan Bakala bounced back from an early exit Friday, to stop 33 of 34 SCSU shots on goal to gain the win and improve to 4-5-1. After a track meet-type, 65-minute, 6-6 tie in the series opener, the teams picked up right where they left off to open the finale. St. Cloud State opened the scoring at the 3:25 mark of the game, when Nick Oliver snuck the puck through traffic and into the back of the BSU net. Just as they had twice the night before, the Beavers regrouped and rallied to even the score. This time the SCSU lead would last only 47 seconds. Jordan George erased the one-goal deficit with his team-leading 10th goal of the season, and third of the weekend, after taking a pass from aaron Mcleod in the slot and dropping a backhand over the shoulder of SCSU goal-tender Ryan Faragher. Junior blueliner Matt Carlson was also credited with an assist on the play marking the first point of his junior season. The Beavers would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to the eventual game-winning goal by Hunt. Jeff Jubinville won an offensive zone face off to Hunt at the top of the right circle. The senior skated to the top of the slot, wound up and like he has so many times during his career, unleashed a laser through traffic and past Faragher. Things got ugly for the Beavers in the second period. Owning the narrow-est of leads, 2-1, the Beavers were whistled for three penalties, which included a five-minute major and game misconduct. The BSU penalty-kill unit suc-cessfully held the SCSU power-play crew without a goal for 5:25, but failed to generate any offensive push as the team was out shot 10-1 in the frame. Clinging to a 2-1 lead, the Beavers found themselves short a man for the first 3:35 of the third period, but caught a break when Cam Ried was penalized of cross-checking forcing the teams to 4-on-4 for the bulk of the remaining Brady Wacker major. The Beavers took advantage of another break at the 15:48 mark when Nic Dowd was sent to the box for hooking setting the Beavers up with their third power-play opportunity of the evening. Sixty-one seconds into the man ad-vantage, Brance Orban scooped up a loose puck in the BSU defensive zone and found Radoslav Illo streaking up the ice. Illo netted his second goal in as many night, completing the 2-on-1 with a slapshot goal. The Beavers were out shot 34-14 in the game. BSU’s 14-shot victory stands as the lowest shot total in a win since it was out shot 42-14 at Colorado College Dec. 29, 2006. BSU owns a 45-39-4 advantage in the all time rivalry and with a win and a draw, earned a series win in St. Cloud for the first time since back-to-back victories Dec. 9-10, 1983.
