American hikers detainedin Iran two years ago will“soon” receive “final ver-dicts,” according to reportsout of the country and re-gion yesterday.

Elkins Park native JoshFattal has been held in cus-tody since July 2009 afterbeing arrested while hik-

“Reviewing the case hasended and the final verdictwill be issued soon,” Prose-cutor General Gholamhos-sein Mohseni-Ejei toldnews agency ISNA, accord-ing to the Jerusalem Post.

The Tehran prosecution

has evidence — accordingto CNN, which quotedIran’s Press TV — that thetwo have been collaborat-ing with U.S. intelligenceagencies, but their familieshave denied that all along. The young men met in Cali-fornia during college andhave never worked for the

South Philadelphia resi-dents, hear that? It’s theroar of SEPTA buses operat-ing in place of tracklesstrolleys eight years afterSEPTA removed them fromservice.

In 2003, SEPTA replacedthe trackless trolleys withbuses on the Routes 29 and79 due to construction de-tours and the need for newtrolleys, but it has kept thebuses in South Philadel-phia while adding the trol-leys in the Northeast. Resi-dents want the trolleysback and have refused tolet the issue die.

“I just finished writing aletter to Mayor Nutter,”said Susan Patrone, formerpresident of the PassyunkSquare Civic Association, who has been front andcenter on the fight. “The[trolleys are] quiet, they’renot diesel dependent. They’re just as importantto the landscape as ourbuildings.”

The Clean Air Councilhas called for restorationof the trolleys. SEPTA ad-mits that trolleys couldsave money in the longrun, but has said it wouldcost about $50 million forthe two routes, includingthe purchase of 23 vehiclesand improvements toequipment.

A dispute is brewing be-tween Old City’s residentsand businesses over some-thing very central to theneighborhood’s identity:nightlife.

The neighborhood al-ready has a long-held mora-torium on new restaurantsand bars — unless the citygrants a variance or an ex-isting one is replaced in thesame location. But the pro-hibition would be mademore restrictive under pro-posed zoning code reformexpected this fall.

“The way the old zoningcode worked, you could ap-ply for a variance for fooduse. It was like a wink anda nod, ‘If we like your use, then we’ll let you do it,’”

Old City District boardmember and bar ownerAvram Hornik said. “Thenew code has a varianceprocess, but the standard isso high that it’s almost im-possible to overcome.”

The Old City Civic Asso-ciation supports the rigidban. “We have over 80liquor licenses. How many

is enough?” said zoningchair Joe Schiavo. “The re-ality is we had enoughback in 1990.”

The split, according toZoning Code Commissionexecutive director EvaGladstein, comes down toquality of life concerns.

“[The Old City Civic As-sociation] feels havingmore would damage theirquality of life and the vi-brancy of their communi-ty,” said Gladstein. “TheOld City District feels thatin order to continue to be avital neighborhood, theyhave to be open to invest-ment.”

More homeownerschoose shorter loans

Many choose to refinance while interest rates are low 37 percentchanged 30-year mortgage to 15 or 20 years Should you wait for better?More homeowners preferto pay off their mortgagessooner as interest rateshave stayed near rock-bot-tom and weak labor condi-tions have caused them toreduce their debt loads, asurvey showed yesterday.

The current trend in re-financing into shorter loanterms is a stark contrast tothe one during the heightof the housing boom, when families were takingout bigger mortgagesagainst the rising values oftheir homes.

Of those homeowners

who refinanced a 30-yearfixed-rate mortgage duringthe second quarter, 37 per-cent moved into a 15-yearor 20-year fixed-rate loan. This is the highest sincethe third quarter of 2003,mortgage finance agencyFreddie Mac said.

In the second quarter, interest on the 30-yearmortgage averaged 4.65percent, compared with a3.84 percent average on 15-year mortgages, the com-pany said.

“It’s no wonder we con-tinue to see strong refi-

nance activity into fixed-rate loans,” Freddie Mac’schief economist, FrankNothaft, said in a statement.

Refinancing has com-prised the bulk of U.S.mortgage activity sincethe housing bust that ledto the 2007-2009 global fi-nancial crisis.

During the secondquarter, the refinanceshare of mortgage applica-tions (versus the share ofapplications for loans tobuy a home) averaged 70percent, Freddie Mac said.REUTERS

THEWORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

It’s great to see celebritypower used for good, espe-cially in the face of tragedy. On Sunday, Oscar-winningactress and Grammy-win-ning singer Jennifer Hudson, along with her sister, JuliaHudson, hosted the first everHatch Day on behalf of theJulian D. King Gift Founda-tion at the De La Salle Insti-tute in Chicago. If you re-member, Julian King wasHudson’s 7-year-old nephewwho was killed in late 2008by William Balfour, Julia’s es-tranged husband. Balfouralso murdered Hudson’smother and brother. At theevent, held on what wouldhave been King’s 10thbirthday, 2,000 Chicago stu-dents received school sup-plies and got to create theirown custom backpacks. And that’s not all: Hudsonwill be featured in robocallsto 285,000 Chicago publicschool students, remindingthem that school startsSept. 6. “It feels good togive back to children, as he

was a child,” Hudson toldABC News. “And also tohelp inspire your kids —that’s one of the things thathelped me growing up, toknow that, ‘Wow, if this isin my presence, then I canachieve and I can do it,too.’”

See ya later,Kate GosselinKate Gosselin to get a real job?It certainly looks that way asher days as a reality TV star arenumbered. “TLC has decidednot to renew another seasonof ‘Kate Plus 8,’” a network reptold PEOPLE in a statement. “Bythe end of this season, ‘KatePlus 8’ will have hit the 150episode mark (including ‘Jon &Kate Plus 8’); an exceptionalmilestone. TLC hopes to check

in with Kate and the family pe-riodically with specials in thefuture.”

‘Lone Ranger’stays aloneLooks like Johnny Depp won’tbe riding off into the sunset ina big-screen remake of “TheLone Ranger,” as Disney pulledthe plug on the project afterproducers were unable tobring down the $250 millionbudget, according toDeadline. Backstage interviewsaside, Michele sayskeeping in charac-ter wasn’t a priority

for her. “I feel like I did anice blend of Rachel and ofLea while I was onstageperforming. We are ourcharacters; but when wewalk offstage, we are defi-nitely ourselves.”

And for Colfer, slippinginto Kurt’s persona is some-thing of a safety precaution.“I had to be in character, Ihad to be,” he insists. “Youjust have to leave yourself atthe door sometimes, be-cause there's no way I coulddo ‘Single Ladies’ everynight. I could not. That'swhen you just leave your-self behind.”

For most television ac-tors, the months be-tween filming sea-sons of a show is a

time for vacation or squeez-ing in film roles. For the“Glee” kids, not so much.Instead, they hit the road totide fans over until newepisodes hit the air. Andnow the cast makes a jumpto the big screen with“Glee: The 3D ConcertMovie,” a best-of mix of thestadium tour that tookthem across the U.S. and toEurope during their sum-mer off.

While the live tour isn’t anew thing for the “Glee”cast — they did the samelast summer — the experi-ence of playing to 20,000fans a night isn’t somethingthey find easy to get used to.“It is different because on aset it’s closed off. I think

crowds are a little more for-giving than your script su-pervisor,” says Darren Criss, who plays Chris Colfer’s pri-vate school-attendingboyfriend Blaine. “There’sthis huge fan presencethat’s undeniable — butwhen it’s on social media, itisn’t as immediately tangi-ble because it’s inherentlydisconnected via a comput-er screen,” he explains. “Soto experience all these peo-ple in real time is a prettycathartic moment.”

The concert film also fea-tures some cute backstageinterviews with the cast, done in character — an act-ing exercise that provedmore difficult for some, itturns out. “It’s hard. I defi-nitely blew it a couple oftimes,” Criss says. “I was inSan Francisco makingshout-outs to my parents,

Whether the members ofLMFAO are getting spray-painted before shows, in-corporating giant blow-upzebras into their act ordrenching their audience inchampagne, it’s safe to saythat life has been a nonstopparty for the hip-hop/elec-tro duo of DJs Redfoo andSkyBlu.

Redfoo is Skyblu’s uncle, and music is in their blood:Berry Gordy, founder of theMotown record label, isRedfoo’s father and Sky-Blu’s grandfather.

“We grew up around alot of parties, so I think that

really added to our person-ality,” says SkyBlu whilebackstage at the BillboardSummer Blowout Concertin New York City. “So whenwe make electro music, wemake dance music for theclub, I think that comesthrough. And like ’Foo says,Motown was dance music.”

Redfoo says he haslearned a thing or two fromMotown’s business ap-proach: “They would teachartists how to walk, how totalk, how to make love tothe fans. See, we breaksome of those rules, be-cause they would say, ‘In an

interview, you know, don’tdrop your pants and startdoing the freak.’ But me,I’ve got to do it.”

With that he drops trouto reveal a pair of shiny goldbriefs.

Like every other family, the pair quarrels every nowand then. What does theduo who shouts the word“shots” more than 30 timesin the chorus of their 2009single do to settle scores?

“What we usually do isbet shots,” says Redfoo.

For Roxana Altamira-no, the underdog isking. As founder ofNerdboyfriend.com,

she transformed her admi-ration of geeky malecelebrities into a successfulonline style guide. The blogfeatures iconic male por-traits — from classics likeSalvador Dalí and ErnestHemingway to contempo-ries such as Elvis Costelloand Adrien Brody — withlinks to stores where herfollowers can re-create thelook du jour. “It’s all aboutideas,” says Altamirano. Wecaught up with the L.A. resi-dent to discuss what it takesto win her heart and whatshe’ll be dressing herboyfriend in this fall.

Why are nerds such sexsymbols? The word “nerd” got associ-ated with the blog by acci-dent. I wanted to start aphoto blog posting imagesof the male icons I was inlove with. I realized they

weren’t the hippest or best-looking guys, but they stillhad a unique style. “Nerd”has different meanings: tosome it’s glasses and highpants, and for others it’ssomeone who’s passionateabout what they do. You recently posted an imageof A Tribe Called Quest to thesite. In most circles, they’re notconsidered nerdy. I actually get heat from peo-ple. They have their owndefinition of “nerd” and myposts don’t fit that. But forthe most part, people un-derstand it. A nerdboyfriend is just a guy whoowns his style. It’s kindanerdy if you don’t necessari-ly wear what’s on the run-ways. It’s no longer aboutwearing Guess jeans causethey’re the most expensive,it’s about wearing Guessjeans because no one elsedoes anymore. Who was your first celebritynerd crush?Indiana Jones. He’s not verynerdy but …

But he was a professor.Right! And I became enam-ored with Jim Henson, too,but not because I hadposters of him on my wall. It’s just the idea of him. Have you met any crushes? The only one I’ve met andposted is Andrew W.K. Al-so, man, I post a lot of peo-ple who’ve passed, but Iwouldn’t mind meetingJohn Turturro, David Bowieor Ian McKellan. What are some essentials youlike for guys this fall?I stick to the classics. I likebutton downs — light pinkand blue oxfords, the

schoolboy type. I’m also afan of waiting-for-a-floodpants. Not like Tom Brownor anything, not like mancapris. I think TOMS aresexy. And I like when guyscarry canvas totes. Thosewill do the trick.

Do you dress yourboyfriend? We’re really not stylishpeople. We just lounge insweatpants a lot. And

now I’ve made the habitof going out in sweat-pants. [Laughs] But no, Idon’t need to help him. He’s actually very stylishon his own. The problemis there’s just no time toput a lot of effort into it.

#1 DAILY NEWSPAPER IN CENTER CITY

The Phils have transformed our cityinto a spawning ground for winners,so much so that we were voted thecapital of the sports world in arecent ESPN poll. The Phillies are the

best team in baseball, and the best in theirhistory. The Eagles arethe talk of football, suddenly hell-bent onwinning their firstchampionship in 51years. And the Flyersare crazed to end theirown 36-year drought.

We have thePhillies to thank forthis rebirth of spirit.Just when the otherteams seemed securein their contender status, the Phils askedmore from themselves, and we all held a pa-rade in 2008 to celebrate that new commit-ment. They made themselves so good, so cap-tivating, that the other teams have had nochoice but to try harder.

During their free-agency frenzy, theEagles have scoffed at the notion that theirnew aggressiveness was fueled by thePhillies. My follow-up question would be: Areyou human? The Birds owned this city for ageneration, and we’re supposed to believethey wouldn’t rebel at losing No. 1 status?

In this time of unprecedented triumph, we allshould stand and offer an ovation to the peo-ple who changed the culture. Rise together, please, and thank the Phillies — for our firsttitle in a quarter-century, and so much more.

ANGELOCATALDITHE VOICE OF THE PHILLY SPORTS FAN

President Joe Banner even had the audacitylast week to suggest that the Red Sox are amodel for the Eagles because his belovedhometown Bostonians “have a great team andthey still go out and get great players.” Youmean, like the Phillies acquiring Roy Halladay,Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt and Hunter Pence?

There are windows at the NovaCareComplex, and the view shows that more fansthan ever are wearing red, not green. More ofus than ever are talking baseball, not football. The clamor for Phillies tickets is equal to orgreater than the demand for Eagles tickets.

And that’s why the Phillies deserve a showof our gratitude, for new Eagles like NnamdiAsomugha, Cullen Jenkins and Jason Babin. ForIlya Bryzgalov, Jaromir Jagr and all of the otherarrivals during the Flyers’ housecleaning. Anddon’t forget Joshua Harris, the soon-to-be own-er of the Sixers. After what the Phillies havedone here, who wouldn’t want to own one ofour city’s sports franchises?

In the three decades I have lived in thisamazing city, I have never experienced the joysof the past few months. Every day seems tobring a new victory for the Phillies, and newhope for at least one of the other teams. It isthe best time to be a Philadelphia sports fan.

That’s why I’m standing and applaudingwho made it possible. Thank you, Phillies.

Reid’sbiggestchallengeNow that the front officehas done everything itcan to build a champion, the next big question fac-ing the Eagles is not soeasily answered. Is thereany way Andy Reid canscrew this up?

The first hint that theremay be trouble aheadcame on the first drive ofthe preseason, when Reidchallenged a near-touch-down by Jason Avant.Right after Eagles Televi-sion Network flak DonTollefson chirped thatReid was in “midseasonchallenge form,” the refsruled that it was no catch.Midseason form, indeed.

Reid is abysmal at basic

elements of coaching —timeouts, challenges, andshort-yardage play-calls, toname a few. At the sametime, he’s among the bestat taking new players and

assimilating them into hissystem, a skill that willprove especially beneficialafter the roster shake-up.

Whether Reid’s abilityto make his new playerscomfortable willoutweigh his obviousshortcomings on the side-line remains to be seen. But he should know thatthe stakes are much high-er now than at any pointin his 13-year tenure.

If we know anythingabout the Eagles’hierarchy, it is that theyspend their money veryreluctantly. The first ques-tion they’re going to ask ifwe don’t have a parade iswho was most responsiblefor the failure. In short,Reid could be facing theend of his long reign. Andthat’s one decision Reidwon’t be able tochallenge.

Reid has a lot to prove,

GETTY IMAGES

Idle thoughts from Cataldi ...1The guts and the glory.

Upon his induction into thePhillies Ring of Honor last Fri-day, John Kruk said somethingthat should be engraved on hisplaque. Asked about playerswho say Philadelphia is tootough on its athletes, hereplied: “To those people I say,you didn’t have the guts tosucceed here.”

2From Rex’s mouth to ourears. Rex Grossman is pre-

dicting that the WashingtonRedskins are going to shockthe world and win the NFCEast. Of course, this cannotpossibly happen as long as thestarting quarterback is a stiffnamed ... Rex Grossman.

3Like coach, like receiver.DeSean Jackson ended his

ridiculous holdout last weekand then held a news confer-ence for no apparent reason. He refused to answer almostevery question, brushing off allmajor issues by saying he was“not getting into all of that.”Andy Reid must have been veryproud.

Metro does not endorse the opinions of the author, or any opinions expressed on its pages. Opposing viewpoints are welcome. Send submissions to [email protected].

BlamingCharlieCharlie Manuel can’t pos-sibly stain his legacy asone of the most successfuland lovable managers inPhillies history by failingto win the World Seriesthis year. Or can he?

The same question being asked about AndyReid applies to Manuel, too. With a team this over-powering, is there anyway the manager canscrew it up? Yes, he can.He most definitely can.

Like Reid, Manuel is farmore talented behind theclosed doors of theclubhouse than he is dur-ing a game. Naysayerspoint to the bullpen or thebench as fatal flaws onthis amazing team. Pleaseallow me to add Manuel’sstrategic shortcomings.

Do I have to remindanyone that the Phillieswere a better team thanthe Giants last season?Have we conveniently for-gotten the way Manuelblew the pivotal Game 4by refusing to pitch RoyHalladay on three days’rest, or by failing to buntwith Jimmy Rollins?

Manuel manages withhis gut more than hishead, ignoring the ablecounsel of his benchcoach, Pete Mackanin.Manuel burns his benchor his bullpen too early. Tothis day, people close tothe team swear thatManuel won the title in2008 because he startedlistening to his topassistant, Jimy Williams.

The Phillies are theRolls Royce of baseball.Let’s just hope the chauf-feur doesn’t get lost onthe way to the parade.

and so does Manuel!

“The clamorfor Philliestickets is equalto or greaterthan thedemand forEagles tickets.”

Action Jacksonputs on clinicat Eagles camp

Receiver wows in first practice with team Picks onSamuel in one-on-one drills Birds break camp todayDeSean Jackson showed upat Eagles training campand said he wouldn’t be adistraction.

Off the field, anyway. On the field, it’s pretty

hard not to be a distractionwhen you’re clearly thebest player on it. None ofthe Eagles’ trio of vauntedcornerbacks could keep upwith the electrifying Jack-son yesterday, as he put ona clinic in his first practicewith the team following abrief holdout.

“DeSean is a little dif-ferent from us regularpeople,” said Eagles offen-sive coordinator MartyMornhinweg. “DeSeancan, he’s just got such auniquely high level of tal-ent. He’s fast, he’s quick,he’s athletic, he’s smooth,he’s natural, he’s smart,he’s got all of those thingsand so he’s quite different. And he had fresh legs aswell.”

At one point, Jacksonwent up to Mornhinweg,

diagnosed the coverageand told the coach that hecould go deep, since safetyKurt Coleman was “squat-ting” on him.

“That was half a joke, but he did do that,” Morn-hinweg said.

No matter which cover-age the defense threw atJackson, he beat it. And itdidn’t matter if it wasNnamdi Asomugha, Do-minique Rodgers-Cromar-tie or Asante Samuel, hisfavorite victim. Jacksoncaught three would-be TDsagainst Samuel.

“We always have greatcompetition and we’ve gotsome great, great covermen on this football teamon the defensive side, so itonly makes both sides bet-ter,” Mornhinweg said.

The Eagles will hold anabbreviated workout to-day, then leave Lehigh.

Jackson caught three would-be touchdowns yesterday against Asante Samuel.

Howard Eskin, the leg-endary sports talker at 610WIP, is leaving his 3-7 p.m.time slot. A choked-up Es-kin announced the deci-sion yesterday around 4:40p.m. His final show isscheduled for Sept. 2.

“You have often heardme say, ‘I’ve never had abad day in my life,’ and Imean it,” Eskin said. “This is

really another great day in aterrific streak and I’m juststarting a new chapter.”

Eskin, 57, will continueto work at 610 WIP as anEagles sideline reporterand consultant. AnthonyGargano is reportedly setto take over the highly-cov-eted afternoon drive shift.

“I will be giving up the3-7 p.m. shift but will stillcontinue as part of WIP, aspart of the Eagles broad-cast, along with thepregame shows and othershows and projects,” Eskinsaid on air yesterday.

Eskin repeatedly told lis-teners that he made thedecision to help further hisbroadcasting career. How-ever, it’s no secret he hadfallen behind Mike Mis-sanelli, at 97.5 The Fanatic,in the ratings. METRO

ADVERTORIAL

Every three minutes another person falls behind on credit card debt. It’s no wonder, since every major credit card company has nearly doubled the minimum monthly payment on consumers’ bills. Federal Regula-tors forced the change because of their concern about the growing mountain of consumer debt, which stands at $2.17 trillion. Many consumers can only pay the minimum payment, which can take up to 30 years to pay off. Now, relief is in sight for millions of Americans.

CreditGUARD of America, a non-profit licensed debt management service provider, is making a new program available to lower debt payments and become free of all credit card debt in only three to five years. Consumers need only $2,000 or more in total credit card debt and falling behind on any account, to cut their payment by 35% to 50%, and reduce or eliminate interest charges altogether.

Over 200,000 families, located throughout the U.S. have regained financial independence with CreditGUARD’s licensed, bonded and insured service. CreditGUARD of America has received high marks in consumer surveys showing high consumer satisfaction and confidence.
