After the success of the Young Originals Exhibition, 2010 the Western Australian Secondary School Executive Association (WASSEA) is proud to again underwrite this event. This year WASSEA is delighted to welcome Edith Cowan University, School of Communication and Arts as the Venue Partner. It is exciting that Young Originals has the privilege of being one of the first public exhibitions in the new Spectrum Project Space.

Young Originals is supported by the Department of Education through ArtsEdge, a strategic arts and education partnership between the Department of Culture and the Arts and The Department of Education. The exhibition provides a valuable opportunity for young artists to exhibit their work in a public gallery space where it can be enjoyed by members of the community.

The Young Originals Exhibition celebrates the creative and innovative arts programs taught in Western Australian public schools and delivered by many talented, enthusiastic and inspirational teachers. The range of work entered and selected for Young Originals 2011, is testament to the variety of visual arts and design experiences in which students across our public secondary schools are engaged.

I thank all the students who entered artwork for the exhibition and I congratulate those whose pieces were selected. I am pleased to join those students, their families, teachers and principals to celebrate their achievements. Well done!

CoNNiE PEtRilloConnie Petrillo has a Masters in Curatorial Studies in Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Connie is Curator of Art at Edith Cowan University and a practicing professional artist best known for her large-scale narrative paintings.

MatthEW JaCkSoNMatthew Jackson has been exhibiting in Western Australia for over a decade and his paintings primarily deal with aspects of social identity.

Matthew has studied at Claremont School of Art, The West Australian School of Art Design and Media and he holds a Bachelor of Visual Art (honS). Matthew Jackson is Currrently a PhD candidate and Cultural theory tutor at Edith Cowan University.

bRENdaN hibbERtBrendan Hibbert has worked in the publishing and graphic design industry since 1994 on some of Australia’s top full colour international trade magazines. After completing a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2000 (with a Graphic Design major) at LaTrobe University Bendigo, Brendan worked with London based oneill Modern Media and on his return to Melbourne, became a senior designer with Visual Jazz.

Brendan runs his own design studio in Perth and lectures Graphic Design and web development at Central Institute of Technology. He is the current state president of the Australian Graphic Design Association (AGDA).
