PAGE 52010 REVIEW AND 2011 PREVIEW

The Willamette University women’s soccer team will be adding 10 freshmen to this season’s roster. In addition to the new players, 13 of last year’s players, including eight starters, will return to strengthen the team.

Leading the way in 2011 will be this year’s only senior, Stephanie Skelly (MF), as well as junior Andrea Rowan (MF) and sophomore Sabine Wetzel (MF).

Last year, Skelly scored 11 goals, Wetzel tallied four goals and Rowan contributed a goal and two assists. Eleven Bearcats each earned at least one goal or one assist during the season.

Willamette will play four non-conference games this year, starting with nearby rival Corban University. WU also will battle with Northwest University (Wash.), University of Redlands and Occidental College before facing University of Puget Sound in the Northwest Conference opener.

Puget Sound will be the team to beat in the NWC, having won the conference championship this past season. It was the ninth consecutive year the Loggers have claimed the NWC title. In the 2011 Preseason Poll, UPS was predicted to win a 10th straight title this season.

Head Coach Hillary Arthur is entering her fourth season coaching at Willamette. She has coached WU to a 28-28-4 overall record and a 24-21-3 conference record in her three seasons. The team finished third in the NWC during the first two seasons, and was fifth during the 2010 season.

Joining Arthur on the sidelines will be Colleen Johnston for her fourth year as an assistant coach, and Joe Locascio, this season’s new goalkeeper coach.

WHERE WE’RE GOINGWHERE WE’VE bEENThe Bearcats concluded the 2010 season 7-11-2 overall and 6-8-2 in the NWC, placing fifth.

Midfielder Stephanie Skelly accumulated 11 goals in 2010, including two game-winning goals. She has provided WU with a total of 19 goals during her career. She was named Second Team All-NWC this past season and was the NWC Women’s Soccer Offensive Student-Athlete of the Week on Oct. 19, 2010. She was named First Team All-NWC in 2009 after scoring six goals during her sophomore season. She is the only senior on this year’s team.

Andrea Rowan started in 19 games during the 2010 season, earning one goal and assisting on two others. In her first two seasons at Willamette, she has provided the team with four goals and four assists. Rowan was honored as a Second Team All-NWC selection last season.

Another vital player in the 2010 season was goalkeeper Nicole Price, who was in goal for seven games and earned 17 saves in 349 minutes. Price will be returning this year as the Bearcats’ lead goalkeeper.

In three previous seasons at Willamette with Head Coach Hillary Arthur, the Bearcats have accumulated 28 wins, including 24 conference victories.

The Bearcats own a very successful history in women’s soccer. Since Willamette’s first intercollegiate team in 1981, the Bearcats have achieved 21 winning records with 15 or more wins 12 times.

WU has won 10 conference titles since 1989 and has qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament five times, with trips to the Final Four in 1998 and 2001. WU won NAIA District titles from 1987-91 and qualified for the NAIA Regionals from 1993-97, advancing to the National level in 1996.

Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.

Willamette professors contribute a wide range of expertise to create a dynamic

and collaborative learning environment for their students. They engage in scholarly research and publication, but they are also fundamentally committed to teaching and serving as mentors and advisors.

Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions.

The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too.

Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette.

Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes.

Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

SALEM, OREGON

SALEM, OREGON

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block.

Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know.

When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

PAGE 19NORTHWEST CONfERENCE & THE NCAA

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.

For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.

Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
