Understand Workers’ Personalities In Order To MotivateWriting in Incentive magazine, Shari Frisinger, author of Communication Replugged, says understanding employees helps you know how to motivate them.

For example:Commanding Drivers: They take charge and make decisions but can be blunt, rude or sarcastic. They speak loudly and confidently. Have them work on lone projects and praise what they do to motivate them.

High-Energizers: They may become impatient with those who don’t work at their pace. Let them lead group meetings, especially for brainstorming. Give them projects that need strong leaders. Motivate by giving them bottom-line outcomes.

Supporting Cheerleaders: They avoid conflict and can smooth the ruffled feathers of co-workers, but may have difficulty staying focused. Engage them in small talk before discussing the business at hand.

Dependable Stabilizers: Are team focused, flexible, shy away from conflict and like routine. They think through a project or request before moving forward. Give them time to think matters through.

Analyzing Perfectionists: Like to work alone and at a slow pace. They check and recheck their work. If there are any flaws in information, they find them and provide solutions. They need step-by-step processes. Praise their consistency, accuracy and teamwork.

They’re your people and they want to be productive and do a good job. But when office workers around the country were survey by Microsoft, they said about 16 hours of their work week were unproductive. Some of that time is the boss’s fault. Workers say 5.5 hours each week are spent in meetings, and most of that time is not productive.

Some things to consider before setting up your next meeting:• Invite only those who need to attend and are relevant to the

purpose of the meeting.• Have an agenda. Know what you are going to say. Put it in

writing so attendees know the topics and how much time will be spent on each.

• Stick to business and avoid chitchat. Some bosses hold meetings where everyone is standing up.

• Don’t hold a meeting if it isn’t needed. Regular meetings for no specific purpose are a waste of time.

What to advise your workers Have a real to-do list that includes only those projects that will be done today. Don’t rely on memory, because other matters will enter your mind and create stress.

Avoid surfing the Internet during business hours. If you must search for non-business matters, do it on your lunch hour. Break time is too short. Rest instead of surfing.

Take notes. Write down ideas to consider at a later time. Always have a note pad handy.

Stay organized. Keep material you are not presently working on off of your desk so you can concentrate on one thing at a time.

Break a big task into smaller segments that can be worked on for part of each day.

Write brief text messages and emails. If what you have to say doesn’t fit, pick up the telephone.

Use the last 15 or 20 minutes of each day to set up work for tomorrow. Clean out the email in-box.

How To Be More Productive

2011 Jan/Feb gam®|mag 4

On December 8, 2010 GAM held its 7th annual open house in the Nokes Boulevard location. The event was well attended and monetary donations along with food and coats were collected to benefit the four chosen charities (see side bar).

GAM showcased its newest addition to its printing palate: UV Coating. The market for UV coating technology has been growing at double-digit rates; the reason for this growth is its unique process characteristics, which allow UV coatings to be applied to almost any surface. UV coating gives more sheen and protection than either varnish or aqueous coating and since it is cured with light instead

of heat, no solvents enter the atmosphere. Gloss and matte, specialty glitter and profile (high rise) UV coatings transform the printed page and create bold contrasts and striking effects. In addition to the aesthetic enhancement, UV coatings can be

used to create Scratch-and-Sniff and Scratch-Off areas on printed material. During the open house, Kenny Fox, press foreman, showed the application of a Scratch-and-Sniff coating on the 2011 GAM

Open HouseNorthwest Federal Credit Union Foundation promotes and manages NWFCU’s charitable activities and participates in financial literacy education and other programs that reflect the interests of our membership and the community as a whole.

WashingtonFirst Youth Foundation (WFYF) is a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to enriching the physical, social, mental, and emotional well-being of children in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area. WFYF strongly believes that ALL children are entitled to reach his or her maximum potential regardless of the challenges he or she may face in their day-to-day lives.

Riverside Presbyterian Church will be participating in The Sugarland Backpack Ministry and the Lunch for the Soul Program, which will provide local families with the food they need. Riverside has committed to filling 70 backpacks and is asking for help in providing food donations.

Operation Homefront DC Metro provides emergency financial and other assistance to the families of deployed and wounded troops throughout Maryland, DC and northern Virginia. The DC Metro area is home to nearly 300,000 troops and their families – many of whom are struggling as a result of multiple deployments, severe injuries and economic hardships.

Folate And Fish Could Protect Your HearingSeveral studies now indicate that low levels of B vitamins, particularly folate, are linked to age-related hearing loss in people age 50 and above. The latest study, reported by Tufts University, shows that people with the lowest levels of folate (folic acid is its synthetic form) were 39 percent more likely to suffer hearing loss.

The Daily Value for folate is 400 micrograms, which can be reached with 3/4 cup serving of fortified cereal. In the Blue Mountains Hearing Study, researchers reported that consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and eating fish was associated with reduced age-related hearing loss. Those who ate fish twice a week were 42 percent less likely to suffer hearing loss over the next five years than those who ate fish less than once a week.

Whatever your age, consuming the Daily Value of folate and eating fish twice a week, or taking an omega-3 supplement, will not only help to protect your hearing but do many other good things for your body.

New Hope For Chronic Fatigue PatientsResearcher have identified a group of retroviruses in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The discovery could open new pathways for treatment. The disease affects four million Americans and 17 million people world wide. It produces debilitating fatigue, chronic pain and symptoms that can increase or decrease at any time. Some patients sayfriends, co-workers and family members don’t believe they are really sick.

The National Academy of Science says the new finding will encourage patients to seek treatment with drugs developed to treat HIV. The virus group is different, but they are both retroviruses. The treatment will change how the illness is treated and viewed.HIV drugs are already in use, so the treatment is immediately available.

Make A Fan Cleaning Tool With Items You Already Have

Cleaning ceiling fans is an aggravating job. You can get the blades clean, but the dust falls below onto the kitchen table or the living room floor. And you probably have to tackle fans in more rooms than one or two.

Cleaning ceiling fans You can solve these problems by taking a few minutes to make your own cleaning tool. All you need is a new paint roller, an extension pole for the paint roller frame, a couple of dryer sheets, and two rubber bands. Put the sheets around the roller, overlapping them, and wrap with a rubber band at each end. Slide the roller onto the frame and attach the frame to the extension pole.

Now you’re ready to clean. Carefully roll your tool over the top sides of the blades. Keep rolling over the blades from the center outward. The roller sheet will collect the dustwithout allowing it to fall.

Getting rid of cobwebsWhen you’re finished with the fans, change the dryer sheets. Then you can use your tool to get rid of cobwebs on the ceiling and in hard-to-reach places like around ceiling mounted lights and where the ceiling meets the wall.

Cleaning wooden blindsHere’s a tip for cleaning 2-inch wooden blinds or shutters at the windows. Advisor Shelly Miller Leer, writing in the Indianapolis Star recommends using wet Magic Eraser cloths from Mr. Clean. The cloths need to be rinsed often, but they will pick up all the dirt, dust and nicotine that may have accumulated on the slats over several months.

Safety In Parking Lots And Trailer Drop Yards

Semi drivers are a competent lot who keep safety in mind, but sometimes their vision in a drop yard is obstructed. They might not be able to see someone who is walking nearby. Anyone who is on foot in their area is primarily responsible for their own safety as the big trucks are moving in or out of their slots.

In employee or customer parking areas, the same is true, possibly more so because cars that appear to be parked can back out with no previous warning. The U.S. Department of Transportation reminds us that both pedestrians and drivers are vulnerable. In one recent year, almost 300,000 accidents were attributed to vehicle

maneuvers in parking lots. About 27,000 occurred while entering a parking space; 198,000 were caused while backing up and 65,000 were caused as a vehicle was leaving a parking space.

Put winter into the mix of hazards and it becomes a whole different world. Snow is the main factor. While lots are regularly cleared, sometimes it has to be done while cars are moving in and out. Everyone in the lot has to make allowance for snow removal equipment. Whether it’s snow or ice, walking to or from a parked car becomes more challenging. Snow might be cleared away, but hard-to-navigate slippery spots can form where there is a lot of foot traffic. Everyone should watch for upcoming icy spots. When one is identified, the walker should take flat-footed baby steps to cross it.

to compete with home TVs

About 1 million fans turned out to watch the first NFL games in person, a big number but nowhere near the 16 million fans who stayed home to watch each opening weekend game.

Big-screen, high-definition TV screens make the at-home experience less expensive and some viewers say it’s as good or better than being at the stadium. Add surround sound and channels that allow viewer to see multiple games at the same time, and watching from home is now preferred by 35 percent of football fans.

NFL teams are working to improve the stadium experience. Huge overhead HD video

boards make the closeup game come to life at the Dallas Cowboys stadium and the New York Jets and Giants stadium.

The Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins have multi-million dollar boards that offer not only live action and replays but also the RedZone Channel.

The New England Patriots provide a free smartphone application that is supplied to club-seat ticketholders. It shows instant replay from several different angles. The Miami Dolphins offer a similar product to season ticket holders. Called FanVision, it has its own handheld device. As these and similar products are being further developed, they will be an important part of league’s future. They could help bridge the gap in technology between home and the stadium.

Fans who are away from home and away from the stadium will soon be able to see NFL game reruns on tablet computers such as Apple’s iPad. They made a $750 million deal with Verizon to carry the games using a wireless app, but it will take awhile to bring the plan to reality.

Payroll Plans Will Send Your Bond Savings To TreasuryDirect

Changes in this world are inevitable, and now they are coming to your payroll deductible purchase of savings bonds.

All paper savings bonds purchased through payroll deductions are being phased out by the Department of the Treasury as of January 1, 2011.That means, when your payroll saving deductions amount to the price of a new U.S. savings bond, you won’t get one. Instead, you will get a deposit to your TreasuryDirect account.

During the transition period, partial amounts you have contributed will accrue to the full issue price of a savings bond. If there is any residualamount at the end of he transition period, it will be refunded. Of course, you can choose to end deductions at any time.

TreasuryDirect is a secure web-based system that allows you to establish an account, purchase and conduct transactions online. You can buy Series EE and I savings bonds, Treasury bills, notes, bonds, and Treasury Inflation- Protected Securities (TIPS) through TreasuryDirect you can still get paper bonds At this time, paper bonds are eliminated only for payroll deduction plans.

Paper bonds are still available at financial institutions. You can buy them yourself or give them as gifts.

Advantages of TreasuryDirect• You can buy or sell bonds and securities 24/7 from any secure

computer. Money from bonds you sell would show up in your checking account within one business day.

• Recurring purchases for bonds or securities can be scheduled up to five years in advance.

• Using Treasury Direct, there is no danger that you will lose or damage a bond or a security, and you won’t have to go to a bank to buy one.

• Issue dates and current values of your investments are tracked for you.

• To open an account, type “how to open a TreasuryDirect account” into your browser.

Paper Savings

They are the new most-popular vehicles. Car buyers apparently are less likely to choose the small and midsize sedans they wanted a few years ago when gas prices were a big worry. At that time, they ignored SUVs.

Data from TrueCar.com shows 2010 and 2011 midsize SUVs are on a waiting list at many dealers. When they arrive, they spend the least time on dealer lots than any other vehicle.

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ, a midsize crossover, is a quick seller, and 2011 models are going just as strong, as is the GMC Terrain. Both have gas saving four-cylinder engines and are favorite choices for families. TrueCar estimates that most dealers only have a two-week supply.

TrueCar execs say automakers underestimated demand. Looking at the fastest-turning inventory, nine out of 10 are some sort of SUV. Cars like the Toyota Camry are just standing there. Its average time before sale is 238 days, which is surprising. It was a best-seller for years. After the Camry, the vehicle spending the longest time sitting on the lot is the 2010 Hyundai Sonata at 209 days, followed by the 2010 Ford Mustang at 202 days.

Ford gives its 2011 Mustang a 305- horsepower V-6 engine with 31 miles per gallon or 412-hp with 26 mpg.

In case you were wondering, Vice President Joe Biden did not order all the cattle guards in Montana to be fired, pull tabs from cans will not buy dialysis machines, and neither do plastic bottle caps provide prosthetic limbs for wounded soldiers.

According to snopes.com (the debunker of Internet email), Internet lies, rumors and humor fall into distinct categories of legend and myth. Two of the categories are virtually the creation of the power of email and the Internet.

Slacktivism: A uniquely human form of email nonsense, it’s ideally suited to the gullible and appealing to thelazy. Slacktivism is effortless activism. Change the world by simply forwarding an email! Get a free computer from Bill Gates by just putting your name on an email! Boycott a company June 5!Forward an email and automatically help a dying child!

According to snopes.com, “Slacktivism comes in many forms, but its defining characteristic is its central theme of doing good with little or no effort on the part of the person inspired to participate through the mechanisms of forwarding, exhorting, collecting, or e-signing.”

Glurge: Heart-tugging stories featuring angels, puppies and children, all of which carry a moral lesson and are presented as true. The thing about Glurge is that it actually can be true, which gives it its power. One example of a true Glurge is the story of premature twins born in 1995. One twin struggled to live; the other was strong. When the weak baby was placed with the strong one,the strong twin put her arm around her sister, stabilizing her sister’s breathing and calming her down. On the other hand, Glurge can be false. National Geographic never ran an article about a mother bird that burned in a forest fire to protect her chicks.

Livescribe Unveils Echo, Its New Smartpen

It’s really smart to use it when you take notes at a meeting or lecture. With special paper, Livescribe’s new Echo records everything you write, plus it records all of the audio in the background. Later, you can hear everyone’s words as well as seeing the notes you took.

You can plug the pen into a computer via USB cable to access the digital file. You can share files on the Livescribe Website. The new Echo at $169 with 8 GB of storage is lighter than its predecessor, the Pulse ($129 with 4 GB of storage). The pen is flat so it won’t roll away and has a rubberized grip.

Hotels Offer 2-Tiered Wireless Internet

Try Installing A Mini-Cell TowerVerizon, Sprint and AT&T are now selling gadgets that act like mini cellphone towers. They broadcast wireless phone service over a small area, one house. If you have really bad cellphone reception and reliability, a mini-tower would cure the problem. You plug any of the various devices, called femtocells, into your broadband network through which they acquire a signal from yourprovider’s network.

AT&T and Verizon don’t mention it, but they are giving away their devices to selected customers who have very poor reception. The Wall Street Journal’s Walter Mossberg says the towers won’t do much if your reception is already pretty good, but they can be a godsend for those who need it. He recommends the MicroCell.

AT&T’s MicroCell, made by Cisco, is an 8.5-inch tall, white plastic gadget. The cost is a one-time charge of $150, though AT&T will knock off $100 if you buy an optional $20-a-month plan that gives you unlimited voice minutes while using the MicroCell. It’s sold only by AT&T. MicroCell can cover a 5,000 square foot house, will serve up to 10 phone numbers and takes about an hour to install.

Verizon’s device, which isn’t 3G-capable, is called the Network Extender. It sells for $149 with a $100 rebate and no monthly fee. Verizon is working on a unit that will be 3G-capable. Sprint’s version is called Airwave. It costs $100, but requires a monthly plan ranging from $5 to $20. It has 3G capacity.

Bad Cellphone Reception?

More hotels offer 2-tiered wireless Internet access. Upscale hotels are offering a choice of basic Wi-Fi service at no charge, or a small charge, to guests checking email. Guests who want faster connections can get them for a higher price. Under the two-tier option, you pay less if you want to check email and Facebook. You pay more if you want to watch movies, YouTube or TV shows. Intercontinental is using the two tiers at its New York, San Francisco and Chicago hotels, charging $10 for low bandwidth and $15 for faster access.

About 30 percent of users choose the more expensive plan. Four Seasons offers two tiers at 16 hotels. The Ritz-Carlson, Marriott, JW Marriott and Starwood’s St. Regis have fast service at no extra charge.

Advice For American Troops Trying To MingleIn Afghanistan

When American mountaineer Greg Mortenson returned from an unsuccessful attempt to climb K2, the world’s second tallest mountain, he was seriously ill. For seven weeks he was cared for in the Pakistani village of Korphe. In return, he promised to build the town’s first school, a project that grew into the Central Asia Institute, which has constructed 50 schools in rural Pakistan and Afghanistan. With co-author David Relin, his book, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace ...

One School at a Time, was awarded the 2007 Kiriyama Prize for nonfiction. In the book, Mortenson tells how to befriend people in the villages. His advice is now entwined with U.S. strategic thinking in Afghanistan. This year, General Stanley McChrystal reached out to Mortenson and sought advice on overcoming mistrust of Afghan villagers. The book took on more importance after new commander General David Petraeus, whose wife urged him to read the book, reaffirmed Mortenson’s advice and Mc- Chrystal’s doctrine.

The phrase “three cups of tea” is shorthand for any leisurely, trust-building chat with locals. Its central theme is from a Baltistan proverb. “The first time you share tea with a Balti, you are a stranger. The second time, you are an honored guest. The third time, you become family.” The stories of unlikely friendships will touch your heart. With its inspirational tone and idealistic worldview, “Three Cups” would not seem to be a primer of military counter insurgence. But when one bulky-clad armored infantryman asks another, as he emerges from a mud-brick home, “Did you have your three cups of tea?” the message is clear. Other advice includes such matters as, “Take off your sunglasses.”
